ART15T Preview 2017 showcases artworks of Rogers State University Art Marketing’s students in the fall of 2017, whose majors range from studio arts, photography, multimedia, graphic design, and communications. As a part of the course’s requirements, students were expected to organize traditional and non-traditional exhibitions. This catalogue serves as an alternative space where students could exhibit their work in a printed form. As the instructor of this course, I selected a wide range of artworks representing the diverse interests of these 15 students in various media and conceptual approaches. I hope this catalogue attests to the quality of RSU art students and their willingness to collaborate for such an ambitious project. Anh-Thuy Nguyen

drake bendabout I aim to create not only art but a meaning behind every line. Every part of the design or illustration has meaning that we must unlock. My goal is try to convey that through all of my works.

kelci buss I create visually cohesive and logical compositions marked by exciting typography and illustrative motifs, always injecting a new creative element into each design.

shelby hobbs I have tried to convey the sense of who we are as individuals and the idea of the fingerprints we leave behind on objects, other people, and places. I like to leave the audience questioning and wondering who they are and considering the impact they have on the world around them.

tori hurt My work explores line, contrast, and simplicity. I love clean compositions and values that draw your attention. For me, inspiration comes from nature, my travels, and the classroom.

margaret jenkins Nature never ceases to fascinate and inspire me, so I incorporate her into much of my art. I often paint images that are a small part of a much larger story or possibility, one that calls for contemplation and inspires the imagination. I like to paint them – the parts of a story – pure and clear, as my heart feels that which I imagine. As I’m painting or creating anything, it always seems to come down to my wanting to define and share some truth, beauty, and sometimes fantasy, and other times, hope.

addison jirik Something that I strive to convey through my work is intentionality. I like to be deliberate in my research and discovery period, as they propel me towards a more meaningful design. I think designing something with a purposeful message resonates with more people than something that is shallow in content.

nanette kelley TSI (WAHZHAZHE language- a traditional Osage dwelling) is the first installation project in the 2018 series MAZA DAKA (we are here in this place), a collection of historical interpretative installations throughout the Osage Nation Reservation. Through educational events and historical installations, I facilitate educational and cultural outreach.

jesse mcintyre These two portraits create similar feelings of anxiety, dread, and general uneasiness. The subject matter tackles issue we face in society today, dependence on technology and gun violence. My hope is to start discussions on these serious topics through my work.

I seek to synthesize my training in fine art and graphic design into a unique approach. I draw visual inspiration from paper and fiber crafts, particularly focusing on the messages that elements such as texture, repetition, and color can convey.

thomas shaffer These works are two from a series of multiple watercolors. Number 9 and Number 10 are winter themed watercolors. These are meant give the viewer a feel of the season of greetings and walking outside then saying, “God it’s cold.”

nedra starr As far back as I can remember, I have always dealt with depression and anxiety. Creating work that deals with the taboo topics, I want my audience that deals with the same issue to know they are not alone. Dealing with mostly black and white photography and heavy contrast, the images take a gloomier tone. audrey thompson With each design, I try to make sure to maintain a balance between rationality and creativity that accomplishes not only what the client desires, but also what I want in this design. Although my work is more geared towards a commercial field, I try to design my graphics as illustrations that deliver certain aspects and information to the audience.

sean tyler These works exemplify two areas of exploration in my work. I am exploring new directions for the female form and the ramifications of art history on the form; and exploring issues of texture and style in traditional still lives.

I believe that great design is in the details. For me, art is about making connections between people. I use photography as a means of expression for myself and others. I’m interested only in real smiles, sincerity, and authenticity. I use these images as a building block of an unfolding story.

bridget williams My current project is about self-identity and its role in diverse cultures. I wish to communicate and connect with those who feel lost in their own culture. I approached this in a narrative style to express my ideas in fun and engaging ways.
