Managers Profile: Name: Simon Brown (not too sure about the picture….looks very familiar!!) What is your football background? I played football for the school and university teams and then played in the Sunday league for 15 years until I was simply too old and ‘rubbish’ to continue.

How long have you been involved with Pennine Juniors? 5 years How long have you been managing a team? This is my 4th season as a Manager. The U8 Blacks are my second team, prior to this I managed the current U12 Blacks until they moved to 11-a-side, Joseph my eldest plays in the U12 Blacks and Ben my youngest plays in this team.

What do you like most about managing a team? Spending time with my son away from the TV and computer games and the boys/team, they are all very different.

What do you find challenging when managing a team? The boys…. What has been your funniest/best/ most memorable moment? It was the U10 Blacks coming 3rd in the premier division in 2010/11, they had gone from been thrashed every week at U8 to mid table at under 9 and close to some silverware at U10.

Describe your team: Work in progress, they are a set of very talented boys with the potential to win the top division over the coming years, they are like a swarm of angry bees with energy and ‘cheek’ to burn.

What are you focusing on in training? Becoming a team rather than 10 good individuals, when they pass the ball and work together they are unbeatable.

Tell us the best game to date and why: It’s always the last one they played. What advice/tips would you give to young, up and coming footballers? Practice. Oh and always buy your coach and manager a big Xmas present.

Pre - Season 21/07/2012 W Pennine Juniors 3 Prestwich Town 1 Kershaw, Brynes 2. Brown First game together as a squad with the 2 new players in the team doing well, Tom K and Harry. PJ had most of the play and the win could have been by a few more. Great overhead kicked goal from Bailey to make it 1 – 1. MOM to Ben B as this was probably his best performance for the Blacks to date (Played on 3G @ Heywood). 28/07/2012

Brynes 3, Butterworth 2, Brynes Kershaw 2, Howarth 1, Jacob E 2. Not played this team before, bit of a mismatch today. The boys were on fire in the first half, ended up with Bailey in net and Ben K and nd Seth up front. MOM Bailey for the hat trick, Ben K with our 2 every headed goal as a team (all be it from 1 foot out !!). Much tougher games ahead. (Played on Norden). 18/08/2012 D Pennine Juniors 3 Littleborough Yellows 3 Kershaw 2, Kirby. Kershaw Not the best game we have ever played, lots of possession and 20+ shots. 2 good goals from Ben K (especially the first – like RVP) and a rocket free kick from Tom K gave us a 3 – 1 lead. Their centre forward scored a hat trick and was a bit much for the boys at times, he looked like he was going to score every time he got the ball. Very good game played in a good spirit from both sides. 25/08/2012

Howarth 3, Kirby 3, Butterworth 3, Thompson Brynes 1 Never played this team before, game was postponed last time. Not sure if the lads are getting better or other teams are getting worse !!! Hat tricks for Tom K, Harry and Dan. MOM Seb who played on his own at the back (Played at Norden). 01/09/2012 L Pennine Juniors 1 Unsworth 4 Kirby Butterworth nd Very good team, did not play them last year (2 best in league – based on results). Two nil down in 5 minutes but after that they held their own. Very physical game – proper grown up football !! All the boys battled really well but they just had a bit much upfront in the end. MOM Harry really put himself about in the middle of the park despite quite a lot of rough tackles coming in from their side. (Played in the mud at Norden) 02/09/2012 W Radcliffe Borough Tournament - 3 wins, 4 draws (no goals conceded). Brown A good day out with strangely good wins again the better teams but draws again the teams I would expect us to beat in a full game. 6 minute games did not leave much chance to get going. Good wins versus Prestwich Town and Walshaw Sports. Highlight was Seb having a milk tooth knocked out in the process of scoring a goal – that’s commitment for you !! MOT, all boys played well again with some getting tired towards the end of the day. On balance Ben B played very well in the early games. Picture of the boys with their medals below, Seth looking particularly pleased with his days work.

Inter - League Games BOLTON LEAGUE 04/08/2012 L Pennine Juniors 2 Bolton Lads 6 Last year’s unbeaten team in the Bolton league, 2 – 1 down at half time with Bailey hitting the post twice from a yard out – felt a bit unlucky to lose by that result. They passed the ball around well at times and were the better team overall (Played on 3G @ Heywood).

Latest Match report: 30.04.13 M.M Celtic Juniors v Pennine Juniors Last game of the season versus a squad of Under 8 and 9 players, they currently play in the Under 9 Roach Division. The boys were excellent again, 6 different scorers and 2 hat tricks from Dan and Harry. During the first period they were particularly good with some great passing moves from midfield to attack resulting in 7 goals in the first 15 minutes. A good way to finish the season with Dan winning the top goal scorer trophy for the year with a massive 31 goals.

Previous match reports: 25.04.13 Pennine Juniors v Prestwich Town 3 x 15 mins

With the season coming to an end this was a good run out for the boys versus Prestwich Town. Two early goals from Dan settled any nerves and from that point Prestwich never looked likely to come back into it. The game played in great sprit with all the boys enjoying the game. A rare outing for Sam (GK) in centre midfield and Seth playing up front added to the end of season fun.

20.04.13 Littleborough Blue v Pennine Juniors 3 x 15 mins

Another trip to Littleborough this week to face the strong Yellow team this time around. Just as last week the boys got off to a very good start dominating the game and getting the first 2 goal. Littleborough then getting a goal back from a counter attack after a Pennine corner to make it 2 – 1 at the end of the first third. Into the second third and Pennine got a 3rd goal to make it 3 – 1, they always look at threat going forward and it was only a matter of time before it came. Final third and the big pitch had begun to take its toll with the game getting very stretched, chances at both ends, Pennine needed a goal and up popped Ben B with a left foot ‘prod’ from a few yards out to ease the pressure. In the final few minutes Littleborough got a second but it was too late. Page | 5

Good performances from the front boys again, Bailey, Harry, Ben K and Dan looking a real threat, passing the ball around well especially in the first third and were unlucky not to score more. MOM Seth again, especially towards the end with tired legs he managed to make some great tackles/interceptions when up against it.

17.04.13 Brandlesholme Warriors v Pennine Juniors Game v team from Bolton League – 3 x 15 minutes Another good win for the boys in difficult conditions, very firm ground due to the dry weather and a strong wind blowing across the pitch. One of the best performances of the year with them showing some real attacking threat throughout the whole game. Good performances from all the boys and goals again this week for Tom H and Seb from defence. MOM Ben B who was excellent down the right wing linking up well in some of the good attacking play.

13.04.2013 Littleborough Blue v Pennine Juniors 25 mins each way. Back to winning ways this week with a good win versus a talented Littleborough Blue team. The boys got off to a flying start, Ben K was excellent in the first 10 minutes playing up front scoring 2 goals before the opposition had settled. A good move from the lads and Bailey scored a third and when Ben B scored from a corner the score was 4 nil. The game could have gone away from Littleborough at that point but they battled back with a goal before half time. Second half and Littleborough came out a different side, the score line at half time meant that Pennine had lost a bit of concentration and were a little out of shape. Littleborough dominated most of the play and managed to grab a second goal but never really looked like coming back to earn a draw, the big pitch meant that all the boys were very tired at the end of the game. A comfortable win, with great play from Ben K MOM, topping off a good overall performance.

06.04.2013 Pennine Juniors v Middleton Lads Reds 6 a side Bit of a strange game this with the opposition only having 6 boys and with us playing on a full size pitch. The boys played well throughout and dominated most of the game, taking the lead in the first half. Second half and much of the same with Pennine having the better chances but with the need to substitute all the boys meaning they struggled a little with their positions. 10 minutes to go and Middleton scored direct from a corner then with a few minutes left the Middleton defender cleared the ball down the pitch, as the ground was very hard it then bounced over the keeper into the net !! The boys were unlucky today and should have at least got a draw. Page | 6

This ends their 5 month unbeaten run – a brilliant effort from the team to go so long without losing a game. MOM Seth, again some excellent work in defence.

04.04.13 Pennine Juniors v Elton & Walshaws Another cold one, common theme at the moment – mid week game, first of the season. A good game played in good spirits with both teams having chances to win the game. Going into half time and Elton had the lead scoring from a good move down the right hand side. Into the second half and Pennine seem to pick the pace up with most of the play in the Elton half, good play resulted in a scrambled finish by Ben D to make it 1 all. From that point there was only going to be one winner with Tom H scoring a rare goal from a corner to secure the victory. MOM Tom H for his goal and some good defending especially in the first half.

29.03.2013 Pennine Juniors v Littleborough Blue The boys had another outing on the Rochdale AFC pitch this week as part of Pennine being award its FA Standard Charter. A quick 10 minute game saw both teams having some chances with Ben Brown scoring for Pennine and Littleborough equalising with a few minutes to go. Picture of both teams below.

Easter 5-a-side Tournament (team from boys who play Monday night at OH)

Some of the boys had another run out at the Milnrow Soccer Village on Easter Saturday. As usual the standard of the opposition was very high with teams from Yorkshire, Liverpool and South Mcr in the competition. Groups Stages – Won 3 and lost 1. Semi Final – lost after extra time and penalties (5 – 4) to the eventual winners Soccatechnix.

Page | 7

Pick of the games was the semi-final with both teams evenly matched, Soccatechnix having won all 4 of their Group games prior to this. 1 all at full time and we went into ‘golden goal’ extra time but still the teams could not be separated – real end to end stuff. Penalties and the boys scored 4 out of their 5 but this proved not to be enough. MOT Seth Edwards was ‘tremendous’ in defence allowing the attacking players the freedom to get forward and pressure the opposition high up the pitch. Bailey Brynes – Top Scorer on the day.

09.03.13 Pennine Juniors v Walshaw Sports A good close game today with a rare clean sheet to show for their efforts in defence. Pennine opened the scoring with another long range shot from Seb, a lay back from a corner with Seb shooting first time into the roof of the Walshaw net. 1 nil at half time with Walshaw not really troubling the Pennine goal keeper. Second half and the game was a little closer with both teams having a few chances. With 10 minutes to go Harry went on one of his runs rounding 4 or 5 of their team and finishing from a few yards out. A comfortable win in the end with the boys doing enough to secure the win. MOM Seth, covering for Sam. Made a good save in the second half and looked as though he had played in goal all his life.

23.02.13 Radcliffe Bor Aces v Pennine Another cold day with the fixture rearranged to the 3G at Heywood, Pennine had lost to Radcliffe 2 nil at the start of last season. The boys got off to a great start putting pressure on the opposition from the first kick; it was 2 nil after 5 minutes with Seb scoring the second with a shot from inside his own half which gave their goalkeeper no chance. This could have gone either way at that point but Radcliffe seemed to start playing and came back into the game with a good goal to make it 2 – 1 going into half time. The second half saw the boys take the game away from Radcliffe with goals from Ben B, Ben K and a volley from a corner from Tom K. A good solid performance from all with 5 different goal scorers, they all have a good day. MOM Tom K, another good performance in the middle of the park topped off with a great goal

16.02.13 Pennine v Bridge Hawks Played in the warm sunshine at Hopwood, Bridge definitely came to play this week compared to the friendly a few weeks ago. Overall all the boys played well running out as comfortable winners in the end, although Bridge certainly passed the ball better than us at times. Two good goals from Bailey – long range shots and a couple of strikers goals from Dan gave us the win in the end. MOM Dan again this week 3 out of the last 5 games. Page | 8

09.02.13 Woodbank Black v Pennine A tricky away fixture to Woodbank was next up for the boys, never an easy place to get a result. The boys set off the game well will a few chances over the first 10 minutes, some good last ditch defending from Woodbank keeping the score level. Finally from a Tom K corner, Bailey scored with a header to give us the lead – no more than we had deserved. Just before half time a ‘debateable’ free kick was given to Woodbank with the subsequent shot squeezing pass Sam to make it 1 all at half time. In the second half - more of the same from Pennine with good play from all the boys creating goals for Dan and Harry to make it in the end a comfortable win. MOM Seth was great at the back limiting them to only a few sights of goal as well as some excellent forward runs causing Woodbank problems whenever he got into their half. A much improved team performance from last week – well done to all.

02.02.13 Pennine v Ramsbottom United Back after the big freeze, we had played Ramsbottom only once before and this was more than 12 months ago, they had beaten the U8 Yellows comfortably earlier in the season. A good competitive game with Rammy proving no push over especially in the first half, at one point the score was 2 all with them having some opportunities to take the lead. In the end the boys started to play some good football with Dan grabbing another 2 goals in the second half. MOM Tom H, some good play in both midfield and defence.

12.01.13 Pennine v Prestwich town A very cold Saturday morning saw the boys playing well in parts against very a determined Prestwich side, one of those days when only one of the chances created went in. A great performance from the Prestwich goalkeeper contributing to the overall result. On the positive side we did get our 100th goal for the season, Tom K knocking in the rebound from a shot that hit the post from Ben B. Well done again to Dan for getting the MOM, that's the second week running. Overall a fair result with Prestwich deserving their draw in the end. Played on 3G at Heywood - 50 minute game. The team pictured below celebrating their 100th goal

Page | 9

05.01.13 Pennine v Bridge Hawks The boys got off to a flying start with 2 goals in the first few minutes. The games and Tournament over the Xmas period seemed to give them an advantage versus a Bridge team who because of the bad weather had only played a few games so far this season. It was 4 nil going into half time with the game being pretty much one sided. Second half and Bridge came out of the block quicker scoring the first goal of the half and creating a few chances down their left hand side. Pennine responded though and in the end proved too strong over the 40 minutes. The MOM went to Dan who was involved in some good passing moves and who got 2 goals himself. That's now 99 goals season to date. I expect a much closer game when we play Bridge again in 4 weeks’ time.

29.12.12 Xmas Tournament – Soccer Village The boys made their now annual trip to Milnrow to play in the Xmas Tournament, the 5 – a – side format and the 8 minute games again gave them a nice run out over the Xmas period. All 10 Blacks attended as well as 3 from the Red team – see picture below.

Page | 10

There were some very good teams present, some of the better teams in our league (Both Chadderton teams and Unsworth Cubs) plus last year’s winners Soccertecnix and teams from Moston and Bingely. We entered 2 teams with overall 5 wins, 3 losses and 2 draws – a much better showing than last year. A good win (again) for one of the teams versus Chadderon Griffins and an excellent draw against Unsworth Cubs were the highlights on the day (Unsworth going on to win the Tournament). The standard of football was very high, the Moston team especially played some brilliant football and it showed the way for the boys in terms of how they need to improve to win this type of event in the future. A good day out all around – MOT (voted for by Phil) Harry Butterworth.

15.12.12 Winter Break Tournament Part 1 – 15th December Organised by the Mangers from Chadderton Park this was a mini competition for some of the stronger teams in the league, the boys played 4 x 20 minute games on the 3G at the Soccer Factory. Walshaw Won 2 -1 Chaddy Grifffins Won 2-1 Elton and Walshaw Drew 2 -2 Woodbank Blacks Lost 3-2 MOT Ben Brown

08.12.12 Pennine Juniors v Woodbank Black Start of the 3G season and not before time as the frost and bad weather look set to be around until Spring. Difficult conditions today, very slippery under foot with the ball skidding a lot making it difficult to control and pass it around. Woodbank took the lead with a goal that Sam will not be too keen to remember (thought Graham was going to have a seizure!!!) ,then Pennine began to play a little with 4 goals in quick succession, 2 good ones from Harry playing on the left side of midfield and a headed Page | 11

goal from Tom K meant that we had a comfortable lead at half time. A quick turn around and the boys were off again with another goal which effectively ended the game. Good performances from all especially Harry for his 4 goals and Sam who regained his touch in the 2nd half with a few good saves. Don’t think this was Woodbank’s best day and I expect a much closer game when we play them again later in the season.

17.11.12 Chaddy Lions v Pennine Juniors Another difficult game again this week against another very strong Chadderton team, at U7 level we had lost to this team twice. What a good game this was. End to end stuff with some great play from both sides. Good first half with Pennine scoring first and then Chaddy coming back down our end and scoring to make it 1 all. 5 minutes to halftime the Chaddy goalkeeper makes a wonder save from a shot from Tom K to prevent us going 2 – 1 in front. The shot was from 20 yards out with him tipping it onto the bar and then the post before picking it up – not sure how it stayed out. Second half off to a rapid start again with Chaddy getting a second with the Pennine boys starting to look at little tired. However, back they came with a second from Seth (1 st league goal of the season) and a 3rd from Dan. With a few minutes left Chaddy scored again to make it 3 all, from the kick off we went down their end, Dan took it past one and then another and shot, it hit the post and that was it, full time. A fair result. Great effort defensively from the boys especially Seb (MOM) who was excellent, all the Pennine midfield ran their socks off tracking back and tackling one minute and then in their area attacking the next. Chaddy have some very gifted boys especially their number 9 who passed the ball around and ran with it better than anyone so far this year, without a massive effort today from all the boys we would have definitely lost.

10.11.2012 Prestwich Town v Pennine Juniors The boys bounced back from last week with a good win again Prestwich Town, Pennine ending up being too strong over the 40 minutes. All the boys played well, notable goals from Seb a control and volley from a corner and Ben B with a great shot from outside the area. The game played in good spirits with all the boys and parents enjoying the winter sunshine. MOM Bailey, it could have been quite a few of them but he did not get a chance to have the trophy last week. Some tougher tests ahead for the boys, notably the fixtures for the next 2 weeks.

03.11.2012 Pennine Juniors v Chaddy Griffins A tough game for the boys this week having lost to this team twice last year by the odd goal on both occasions. Our defence again was not at full strength with Seth away in Disneyland – lucky him. Overall a fair result, the Chadderton boys are very strong through the middle and dominated most of the play. The turning point was 5 minutes before half time when they managed to scramble a goal from a corner to make it 1 nil, from that point on there was only going to be one winner. All the boys battled hard and as usual when we are up Page | 12

against it Bailey (MOM) was all over the pitch for us. Both Seb and Tom H played very well in the defence to keep out some very good attacking play from the Chaddy front 2. Chadderton too good on the day for us.

27.10.12 Pennine Juniors v Littleborough Yellow The pre-season friendly against Littleborough showed that this group of boys are difficult to beat and they still are. A cold morning at Hopwood saw the boys playing some good stuff up to the break going in 2 nil up. The best passing move of the half saw Dan finishing off some good attacking play to make it 1 – 0. After half time Pennine got a third and all seemed comfortable until they scored, suddenly Littleborough seemed to have more confidence and came close a few times. At the other end Harry and then Tom K hit the post and Pennine had a handful of chances to score the 4th. 1 minute to go and Littleborough scored again, then went back down our end and got a corner with 10 seconds to go, fortunately Ben K managed to clear and the whistle blew for full time. A good battling performance from the boys, MOM Seth was very strong at the back and passed the ball very well at times, prior to our kick off he had played in net for the U8 Yellows (a friendly v Westbury) making some great saves to earn them a good draw.

Friendly 24/10/2012 Rochdale AFC ground at half time – 10 min’s (Dale won 2 nil v Oxford Utd)

Pennine Juniors v Prestwich Town The annual game at RAFC was played this year versus Prestwich Town. Whilst there was not a big crowd for the game the boys seemed very excited to be playing under the lights. Most of the team work and coaching over the last few was year was ‘out of the window’ as they all ran around basically having a good time. Notable mentions to Seth for scoring his first goal of the season and Harry with a headed goal – very good. Thanks to the Coaches at RAFC and Siobhan and Keith Hicks for organising the game, both teams really enjoyed the experience.

20.10.12 Walshaw Sports v Pennine Blacks Page | 13

With it always being a difficult game away at Walshaw, it was important that the boys got off to a quick start. They did not let us down, the Walshaw keeper having to make 3 good saves in the first 10 minutes to keep the score level. Finally the break through came with Ben K on the score sheet again after a excellent passage of play from the attacking players, the boys were on fire scoring 2 more to make it 3 nil at half time – probably the best 10 minutes they have played so far this season. After the break the Walshaw boys came out fired up and managed a good goal in the first few minutes of the half, the pressure was on but the boys responded brilliantly again scoring to make it 1 – 4 and putting the game out of reach for the home side. ‘Brilliant play all round today’. Special mention to Seth who played in net as Sam was away (thanks) and to Ben K MOM.

06.10.12 Roach Dynamo Orange v Pennine Juniors Last week’s postponement seemed to have left the boys a little rusty and they got off to a slow start with Roach passing the ball around better, Sam having to make a good save early on tipping the ball over the bar. The boys picked the pace up towards the end of the half with a particular good goal from Harry making it 2 nil to Pennine at the half way mark. The next goal was going to be the decider with Bailey scoring from a corner kick and 2 more goals following soon after. Roach managed a goal late on in the half but will feel unlucky to have lost by this score line. Strong performances by Seb, Seth and Tom H (MOM) in defence ensured the win for Pennine against some good attacking play from Roach.

29.09.12 Bridge Eagles v Pennine Blacks A friendly played at short notice as both our games had been called off due to the bad weather. Excellent performances from all boys, in particular Dan and Seb for their hat tricks. Whilst the score might have been a little one sided all boys enjoy the run out on the 3G at Heywood, thanks to Dave and the parents from Bridge for organising the game.

22.09.12 Pennine Blacks v Woodbank Black Always have a good game against Woodbank, played them quite a few times last year – Birthday boys Ben B and Bailey were captain for the day. Missing 2 of the star men at the back this week with Seth and Seb away, Ben K and Tom K having to fill in during the game. One of those games today, every time Woodbank went forward they scored, this was the story up until 30 minutes with the boys being down 1 – 5 at that stage, the only highlight up to then was a good goal for Harry before half time. 10 min’s to go and we switched a few things around, suddenly we were on the front foot 2-5, 3-5, 4-5 (38 min’s), the boys were playing like they had the previous few weeks. To their credit Woodbank managed to hang on with time just running out for PJ the equaliser did not come. MOM Bailey, he ran his socks off during the game was everywhere on the pitch.

15.09.12 Elton and Walshaw V Pennine Juniors Two close games against this team last year which we won 1-0. Birthday boy Tom H was captain for the day. The boys got off to a sleepy start conceding a goal in the first few minutes, however, that seemed to spur them into action with 3 goals in the first half to make it 1 – 3 at half time. The next goal was the important one with PJ getting this straight after the break. MOM Ben K for his 2 first half goals, he was causing problems with his pace Page | 14

all day. A first goal of the season for Ben B capped off an overall excellent team performance. (switched to Hopwood)

08.09.2012 Pennine Juniors v Unsworth A rough start for the lads having only played Unsworth last week in a friendly, with Prestwich Dragons dropping out of the league this is one of the stand out teams this year. A really good game with both sides playing very well, their star player (10) won it for them in the end with 2 late goals in the second half. I don’t think they could have done much more than they did, if they play like this every week then it will be a very good season for them. MOM Sam made some great saves in the first half and could do nothing about the goals (not sure I would have saved the first one).
