Fashion Stylists A fashion stylist has the role of making clothes and accessories look desirable and attractive. They are responsible for creating an over all look in order to sell them. They do this by using their creative eye to assemble and exhibit them in a certain way that makes them, look attractive.
What stylists roles are there?
What skills are needed? A fashion stylist must have certain skills to succeed in such a job role, these for example range from understanding what best suits a body shape, skin tones, hair colours to good networking and people skills. People skills are so necessary as it enables the stylist to read body langue and listen closely to the client as well as talking. A knowledge of trend forecasting is vital especially if styling people who want to be in with the new trends and fashion statements. Along with this an eye for colour and fine detail is important. Although not crucial, experience in the fashion industry would help as this can lead to a client base, a good portfolio of work and experience with working with different personalities, this can help in the future when you combine this with clothing to create a suitable style for that person. One of the most important things however is that you must be hardworking and
There are many roles under the name of a fashion stylists, these include things such as Editorial Styling, this is not necessarily about the brand but more about creating a theme or fitting to a brief such as a Winter Wonderland Theme. Editorial Styling tells a story. The editorial stylist could be in charge of organising the photoshoot as well as writing an article on personal styling and fashion trends. Another job role is commercial styling, this is completely focused on making a brand look appealing, it is very much client focused. Personal styling is quite different as this involves dressing a person for maybe an event such as an actress for the red carpet. It could also involve dressing a non famous person for every day to day life who just need a bit of guidance in knowing what is best for their body shape and skin tone. Stylists can also be in charge of tasks such as organising fashion events, giving advise and directions of items and clothing at photoshoots. Other roles may include proving make up and hair styling for photoshoots and provide fashion direction to buyers, merchandises and designers.
Stylists that take on some of these roles, from top left clockwise; Edward Enninful, Eric Daman, Penny Lovell
Top Fashion Stylists of Today One of the most successful stylists of today, Penny Lovell started out working as a PR in Burberry and soon worked her way up. She moved from her PR job and started assisting on magazine shoots which then lead her to moving to New York and dressing celebrities in magazines such as Parade. William H. Macy was her first shoot for the magazine and not long after than came her second, Keira Knightley. The pair hit it off and Keira Kinightley ended up hiring Lovell as her personal stylist. A while later, 2009 to be precise. Lovell hit it off with Byrne at a Dior dinner party and have ever since been collaborating. Penny Lovell doesn't mind taking risks and Byrnes white jumpsuit at the 2012 SAG awards proves this. That is not the only example of when Lovell has mixed things up with a darish style decision, Anna Hathaway hired her to give her a punkier menswear inspired look. Lovell has brought a sense of style into the fashion industry mixed with risky decisions.
Enninful’s progress from one magazine to another
If you have heard of Gossip Girl and Sex and the City then you should have most definitely heard of Eric Daman. Daman started out in Paris as a buyer for a boutique, until he was discovered by photographer Steven Meisel to be a model. Eventually though he followed his dream and has become a stylist, television styling for the hit programmes mentioned earlier and also commercial styling for brands such as DKNY and Swarovski.
Anne Hathaway after Lovells bold transformation
Edward Enninful is now one of the most famous stylists around, becoming a model at 16 he worked his way through different paths making contacts and networking skills along the way. At age 18 Terry Jones offered him Summers position in Foxton and Summers when he left. He went from fashion director at i-D magazine to contributing editor at Italian Vogue and then on to contributing editor at American Vogue. Finally in 2011 it was announced he would become fashion and style director of W Magazine. He has helped the fashion industry in styling for Christian Dior, Armarni, Calvin Klein etc..

Colour Theories
How to Wear Your Monochromatic can be Colours...
any colour that you chose, however the aim with this fashion statement is to keep the outfit the same colour but within different shades. This is a great way to give that effortless feel but with looking super stylish at the same time.
Triadic colours: this is simply 3 colours that are equidistant to one another on the colour wheel. This creates a vibrant outfit when pieces are put together and sticking to this can help accessories such as the red necklace above stand out as a statement piece.
Complimentary Colours: these colours are always opposite to each other on the colour wheel. Bright ones are always a good choice if you want to stand out.
Analogous colours: these colours are always next to each other on the colour wheel, here we can see an outfit containing yellow and green, this might initially not seem like such a nice combination however by adding in the neutral colour of black it really works well just going to show 2 analogous colours and a neutral are a great together.
Colour Blocking: when done correctly colour blocking is a great fashion look as long as you try to stick within 3 colours. It can also be done with softer shades for those personalities not wanting to stand out too much.
Dress For, Not Against Your Shape

Choose a tailored jacket that nips in at the waist of has a tie around the middle. This gives an illusion of a smaller waist. Body control underwear is never off the cards, it defines the body holding in those curves that you don’t want and showing them off where you do. Being an apple shape you most probably have a great bust, use this to your advantage and opt for V-necks. To give your body a taller illusion choose your colours carefully. A bold blue top with bright red jeans is only going to show off where your body actually joins your legs. Instead go for similar colours and instead experiment with different shades. Tops with ruching down the front can trick the eye into not being able to see the bigger tummy underneath. Bottoms with zippers at the side are great as they avoid extra bumps at the front. The waistline on dresses should be kept just below the bust.
Jennifer Hudson wears this dress really well, she has the low Vneck showing off her bust and the high waistline on the dress. This dress is perfect for her apple body shape.
This dress is perfect for J-Lo, she is showing off her slim shoulders whilst keeping the bottom half at a nice length. Just over the knee.
The Pear shaped ladies
• To balance out your top half with your wider bottom off go for jackets with shoulder pads in. • Show off your fantastic top off with tight tops and belts around your waist to emphasise that brilliant area you have. • Halter necks and strapless garments should be the first out in the summer months, these give you great opportunity to show off those wonderful slim shoulders. • A-line skirts are great for pear shaped ladies as they skim over the hips whilst also emphasising the waist. • As well as trying to balance the top half with the bottom also try and find tops with embellishment or lots of details. This gives the illusion of a bigger bust. • Tops with wide sleeves are also great for proportioning your hips. • Skirts that end at the knee or ankle are great as it gives eyes an end point. Avoid extremely tight fitting ones.
The Hourglass shaped ladies •
A pencil skirt is definitely the most flattering on ladies with this type of shape. This style with show off your gorgeous curves by clinging to you. If you want to balance your curves opt for bootleg trousers. Puffed sleeves on a jacket will emphasise your shoulders. One piece garments like jumpsuits are great for your figure. Short jackets that stop just above your hips accentuate your curves in a nice way. Soft fabrics , knits and silks will sit on the body nicely draping over your bust and hips keeping them in proportion.

Beyonce knows exactly how to dress for her hour glass shape wearing a pencil skirt to show off her hips and a small top to show off her bust. The cropped style of the top shows off her small waist.
The Rectangle shaped ladies
• Chunky accessories such as big necklaces create the illusion of big breasts. • Skinny jeans show off your slim legs however bootcut jeans are also great, they show off a lovely waist and fab bum. • Pleated skirts that kick out from the waist show off your small waist but add curves. • Ruffles and frills in your clothing will add volume. • Layered fitted clothes look great on your body shape.
Cameron Diaz uses this draped ruffles look to add subtle curves around the hip and bust area.
The Strawberry shaped ladies • • • • • • •
Avoid detail on the shoulders as this can make you look bulkier around this area. Wear patterns or bold prints on your lower half. This will add volume evening out your top and bottom half and make the shoulders look less bulky. Long necklaces will give a centre focus point, team this with a belt nipped in at the waist and this will trick any eye into thinking you have that hourglass figure. A neckline with detail will bring focus onto your cleavage rather than your shoulders. Try to stay away from shoulder pads or halter necks. Flared skirts enhance your lower body curves and even out your hips with your upper body. A top, skirt or dress that is pinched in around the waistline and flares out is perfect for your body shape.
This catwalk look shows just how to dress a strawberry shape, showing off the cleavage, nipping in the waist and using a flared bottom to keep everything in proportion.
The Accessories Closet Are you bored of putting on the same old outfit every week? Do you want to mix it up a little but just cant seem to afford a shopping spree at the moment? Not to worry because these handy styling tips on adding a few accessories can take your outfit from shabby to sheik without the expensive price tags.
The Sun gla sse s
When choosing sunglasses always opt for what suits your face shape best. Not only that but what is its purpose? A sunny beach holiday? A festival? Every day wear? These are all important if your main aim is to look fabulously stylish.
The Belt
Once upon a time a belt had the sole purpose of keeping trousers from falling down. Now however they have taken on a different form and are one of the best fashion statements you could own. They can add detail to a simple outfit and take you from a day to night look. Waist belts are great with dresses and jumpsuits.
The A bag has a wonderful Bag
purpose however they also have the ability to transform an outfit. This big one here adds to the laid back look that the outfit achieves. They can also help express your personality, hence the clutch that could show a more fun and quirky side to a person.
The f r Sca
Scarfs can go with almost any of your day to day outfits. Have a couple of light ones in your wardrobe for summer and a couple of chunky ones for winter. They will transform any outfit in seconds.
Mixing it up
Patterns and Textures‌
I t ’s a l l a b o u t t h e
Don’t go over the top! Its easy to get carried away when someone tells you that an outfit combined by all kinds of prints looks good. A few handy tips to give you some guidance are;
Have one block colour to make sure the outfit doesn’t become overwhelming. Build upon that one colour adding in patterns with various colours. The block colour can be anything from a pair of tights to a wide belt.
You do not want to go for everything matching, like the colours we talked about before the same applies to patterns. Wearing a top, pants and shoes covered in leopard skin is only going to give you one result, you’ll look like you’ve walked into a safari and took the fur off every leopard in there and chucked it over your shoulders.
Remember when putting an outfit together was all about every garment matching with the exact same colours and textures? Well times have changed and I suppose you don’t want to be left behind, that’s why this article has been put together to inform you of the hottest trend. Take note ladies!
If you are being daring and going all out with a different pattern top, different pattern skirt and different pattern shoes then try to link them all together with having at least one colour the same through out. For example in the pictures above from left to right they have used black in the first and creams in the last two.
p a t t e r n s
Lets not forget t h e
You don’t need to wear bright and eye catching colours to show off the fashionista in you. If you don’t feel too brave in experimenting with this then the easiest advice would be stick to the same colour group. A few more handy tips when trying out the mixed textured look; •
•
•
•
Pick one key garment piece and base everything else around that. For example the picture of the grey combination of garments shows us that the focus was probably the skirt and a jumper of the same colour but different texture has been thrown over it nicely. The textures don’t look silly together as they are very similar shades of the same colour. Sticking to maybe just two textures is a nice idea, that way the outfit compliments each other rather than one piece of clothing overpowering the other. The jade coloured outfit doesn't really do it for me, it goes against having just a couple of textures and the coat and trousers seem to both be fighting for attention. If you prefer, stick to neutral colours as they almost always works as they inevitably go together.
This picture is great for showing how when its done well it can look great! Never would you probably think that a suede jacket, leather pants and a silk scarf could look good together. This look however is fabulous for a couple of reasons. The garments all tie in nicely as they are monochromatic. There is different shades if brown in the scarf, bag, jacket and lets not forget sunglasses. The bag, scarf, trousers and the underneath top are all black as well.

My Client: Olivia Ames Age:18 Body Shape: Pear Skin colour/tone: White/Olive tone Face Shape: Round Hair colour: Blonde Height: 5ft 3inchs Eye colour: Brown Job: Student Hobbies: Drinking and Shopping Special Occasion/Season: Wedding in August and Festival Like and Dislikes: Likes dressing up and socialising. Dislikes busy places, crowded surroundings. Insecurities/Best Features: Insecurities – weight. Best Features Bum Size: 10/12 Brands they like: River Island, Topshop, Boohoo, Michael Korrs, Zara, Victoria Secret Budget: £200
Creating a festival look for Olivia was so much fun. Taking into account that her best feature was her bum, I gave her some high waisted short shorts to show this off. I teamed these with a crop top as the festival will be taking place in the height of summer, however because her insecurity is her weight, I decided to give her a throw over checked jacket that could be worn either on the shoulders to cover her arms and mid section or can be tide around the waist to cover the upper part of the legs and also the waist again. For this look I have given it a load of accessories such as jewellery, sunglasses and an in trend floppy hat. The wellies and bum bag are a must for a festival to keep essentials in and the make up and nails are just to add a bit of glam to the whole look. As Olivia has a nose stud I have added a nose ring to give the look a bit of a funky edge.
Wedding My client Olivia mentioned how she likes to get dressed up when going out. So for this look I want to create a glamourous look but one that was suitable for a wedding rather than a night out with friends. I picked a sophisticated dress taking into account it will be a summer wedding I went for dusty pink. The style is elegant and will show off her curves lovely whilst at the same time not showing too much off. I teamed this with nude and peach colour accessories, opting to spend more on the dress itself and going for cheaper accessories in order to stick to the ÂŁ200 budget.

Evaluation For my final photo-shoot I decided on the trend transcend, this is a future trend for AW 15/16. Transcend describes a look that is both luxury and distressed combined. I have created this look by dressing my model in a luxury dress with lots of jewellery such as pearls etc. Along with this I put her in old looking boots that wouldn't necessarily go with the dress but for this look works really well. I created the models make up based on my research into both distressed/gothic make up and luxury glamourous make up. I did this by making dark lips, dark eyes and a pale face. Again after researching I created the hair in a glamorous curly look but slightly messy at the same time to add the distressed undertone. My location was a very important aspect as it was important it was a distressed and not fancy place. I simply chose the woods which also gave it a nice nature feel, this fits in well with my customers profile. Following this I then adapted some photographs on Photoshop giving them a crackled look and changed them to all black and white. The reason my photographs are black and white is to create a sophisticated feel as my chosen consumer group was affluent. Along with this is the luxury dress and expensive looking jewellery. This targets the affluent group of females. The poses I had my model do were also mature and elegant, this helped in creating the affluent feel I was aiming for. For my magazine cover I chose ‘AnOther’ magazine, I chose this because it is a high end fashion magazine targeting the same consumer group as me in the sense that they focus on affluent styles and people. The price of it also fitted in well in that I didn’t want my magazine to be cheap because that is not the type of market I was aiming for. Affluent styles should be supported in the price of the magazine hence why I chose ‘AnOther’ magazine where the price is £6.95. Leading up to my final shoot I did lots of research in what trend to use, I looked at trends such as AW 16/17 and AW 15/16. Trends such as OffBeat, Elemental and Authenticity interested me however I went for Transcend (Distressed Luxury) after reading a little bit more in depth about it. When I decided on this I created my own styling board that I took through to the final shoot, this helped me when styling my model. As well as this I also did separate styling boards for make up, hair, location, models, poses and props, jewellery and garments. This all helped when it came to the final shoot. All of these where inspired by the Transcend look. I also made a call sheet which included the location, time, stylists, photographer etc. The plan didn’t completely go right as I was meant to work with a partner in college, due to her absence I had to carry out the photo-shoot at home with a friend for a model, I don’t necessarily think a practise run would have helped in this case. The planning really helped as when it came to putting the outfit together for my model I knew exactly how I wanted her to look, the same said about the planning of the location. Even though this was done as a back up it came in handy when I had to do the photo-shoot outside of college because I knew then where I would go for it. Sourcing the garments was actually easy as I already had them myself in my wardrobe, however I think if I had chosen a different trend then it would have been more difficult. Apart from finding a time my model was free (it had to be daylight) it wasn’t that hard to find one, my friend fitted the criteria of what I wanted quite well as she was pale. For the research me and a partner looked at the same trend however carried out our photo-shoots separately, I don’t think I would change this as it was good that we could share research if one of us came across a good piece we could share it with one another. For the photo-shoot it was also good because we did them separately it gave them each a unique look.
