Studies reveal that a person with first degree family member with the problem has a tendency to develop the disorder than others. Indirect genetic influences also have been observed to trigger addiction to opium. Not only genetic factors but external factors like our environment and peer group plays a strong part in making a person addict. Peers can influence to begin the habit and continue it, but the decision to select our peer group is totally up to us. Coping factors influence individuals a lot in using and becoming an addict. Such persons when in distress may try opium to get instant relief. Use of opium can induce pleasant feelings to defeat the negative mood, which can soon lead to addiction. Opium induces pleasure in the brain, which all of us enjoy. There is a center in our brain and certain chemicals create neural communication creating pleasure and excitement. When opium is taken it creates sudden and fast rush of joy, which can be addictive. Some of the signs of opioid abuse are increased anxiety, euphoria, improved self esteem, psychosis, depression, irritable nature and lowering of motivation. The behavioral signs include the person using the substance for longer period in greater amount, failure to lessen the intake, spending time for getting, using or even trying to recover from the effect of the drug and neglecting important duties and activities. Many withdrawal symptoms like nausea, vomiting, chills, cold sweat, diarrhea etc, and anxiety, agitation, and enlargement of pupils, insomnia, quivering of body, muscle and bone pains etc are experienced.
