Shakespeare Globe Trust seeks new Chairman 11 May 2012 The Board of Trustees of Shakespeare’s Globe has started the process of seeking a new Chair and intends to have the selected individual in place by the end of 2012. The current Chairman, Roger Parry, has been part of the Globe team since 1985, a Trustee for 14 years, and has been Chairman since 2005. He is retiring from the pro bono role, leaving the Globe well prepared for its exciting future plans. During his leadership, Shakespeare’s Globe has firmly established itself as a centre of artistic, education and academic excellence, one of the most popular visitor destinations in the UK, and a successful commercial organisation which has doubled its turnover in 10 years. On behalf of everyone at Shakespeare’s Globe, Neil Constable, Chief Executive, expressed his gratitude for Roger Parry’s commitment: “I would like to thank Roger for the generous time and important guidance he has given Shakespeare’s Globe as a long-serving Trustee and as our Chairman. Roger has been a driving force in the amazing achievements at the Globe and planning for its continued success. “We have gained an international reputation for our theatre season which saw a 91% full capacity attendance across last year. We have an Education department which tailors learning and resources for over 110,000 people of all ages each year and provides ambitious outreach programmes internationally, nationally, across London and for our home community in Southwark. We have the world’s largest exhibition devoted to Shakespeare and the theatre in which he lived and worked. We have successful catering, commercial and development activities all of which contribute to our £16 million turnover and the independence to operate without annual government subsidy.” Roger Parry commented: “I feel a huge sense of satisfaction with all that has been achieved by the Globe team over the years. The organisation is robust and self-sufficient which gives us the freedom to take creative risks. There is still much to be done to realize fully Sam Wanamaker’s original project, and I look forward to handing over to an energetic and committed successor who will lead the continuous process of development that was always part of Sam’s vision.”

Roger Parry worked with Sam Wanamaker on the original Globe business plan in the late 1980s when he was a consultant at McKinsey and Co. Roger is currently Chairman of a number of media and

marketing companies and has been CEO and Chairman of several media companies including Clear Channel, More Group, Future Publishing and Johnston Press. Following Roger Parry’s retirement in the Autumn of 2012, Shakespeare’s Globe will appoint a new Chair for a maximum six-year term to guide the Trustees and the executive management as they oversee the next exciting phase of development and the continued growth of artistic, educational and cultural tourism programmes. Work is already well advanced on the reconstructed Indoor Jacobean Theatre and construction will begin later this year. Plans are also in preparation to build a new library, archive and research centre on site at Bankside.
