YOUR SIXTH FORM CHOICES
20
Your sixth form choices We offer two study programmes at The Bedford Sixth Form, here’s a short guide to our qualifications and what they mean.
Connect with us: Like us on
facebook.com/bedfordsixthform – Follow us on
@thebedfordsixth
This two-year study programme consists of two options, which you can read about below. To access either of these options, you will need to have achieved the following results in your GCSEs: • At least five GCSEs at A*-C including English • You will be required to hold a GCSE at A*-C or at least a Merit grade in an alternative Level 2 qualification within in your chosen subject if you have studied it previously – only one alternative Level 2 qualification will be counted towards your grades. • In addition, there may also be special entry requirements for your chosen subject – just check the course listing to find out more.
What are A-levels? A-Levels are academic examination-based qualifications at Level 3 – some A-Level subjects also involve coursework. They are recognised as a traditional qualification to gain entry to university and higher education.
YOUR SIXTH FORM CHOICES
level 3 programme
What are level 3 Technical qualifications? These assessment-based courses aim to develop specialist skills, enabling you to demonstrate your knowledge throughout the course via coursework rather than taking exams. These qualifications are recognised by universities and employers as a great alternative to A-Levels.
OPTION 1
If you choose this option you will study a total of four qualifications in any combination of our A-Levels or Level 3 Technical Diplomas, which are equivalent to one A-Level. For example, you could study three A-Levels and one Level 3 Technical qualification, or two of each, and so on. Find out what subjects we offer on pages 22-29. If you wish to study a combination that includes A-Levels you will also need an average GCSE point score of 38 or above. To find out how to calculate your point score, check online at www.bedfordsixthform.ac.uk/points OPTION 2
If you choose this option you will study one of our Level 3 Technical Extended Diploma qualifications, which are equivalent to three A-Levels. Find out what subjects we offer for this option on pages 30-31.
Please note If you don't already have a GCSE in Mathematics, you will need to study this alongside your chosen study option. If you choose Option 1 you will study this alongside three A-Levels or Level 3 Technical Diplomas.
GCSe/level 2 programme This one-year study programme is designed for students who do not meet our Level 3 entry requirements. It offers a combination of GCSE courses and a Level 2 Technical qualification in order to improve your existing grades or gain the subjects you need to progress on to our higher level programme or further study elsewhere, depending on your grades. To access our GCSE/Level 2 study programme you will need to have achieved the following results in your GCSEs: • At least three GCSEs at A*-C The subjects you study will depend on the GCSEs you already have – for example if you do not hold English or Mathematics at A*-C you will be required to take these.
