FEES & FUNDING We don’t believe that money worries should ever be a barrier for people coming into our College. That’s why we offer a range of financial support packages, some of which could be available to you. These may include help with essential costs, travel or meals. TUITION AND EXAM FEES If you are aged 16-18 on 31 August 2018, a British or European Union resident and looking to study at Level 2 and Level 3, the tuition fees and any exam registration fees are FREE, except the Access to Higher Education courses where a fee may be charged. If you are aged 19 or above on 31 August 2018 and looking to study your first full-time Level 2 or Level 3 qualification the tuition fee will be free. If you are aged 19 or above on 31 August 2018 and already have a level 3 qualification, you will need to pay a fee. This will be dependent on the Level 3 programme you choose to study. ADDITIONAL COSTS For some of our study programmes, you may have to pay for certain things you need in order to successfully study your subject. BEDFORD CAMPUS Situated at the heart of the town on the banks of the River Great Ouse, our £15 million refurbishment has resulted in a campus to be proud of with everything you need in one place, including:

LEARNING RESOURCES CENTRE (LRC) Fresh and modern, the LRC is a great place to study outside of classes. If you need to get a project finished, or meet classmates for some group study, there are workspaces and computers available for your use. There are over 30,000 items in the LRC, including a growing number of e-resources. Having the books you need online means you can learn at home or wherever you go – something that is proving very popular with our current students.

INDUSTRY-CLASS WORKSHOPS If you are studying a course such as Engineering or Construction, our realistic working environments will help you hone your technical skills and practice your technique in workshop bays designed for carpentry, electrical work and more.

YOURSPACE COMMON ROOM The hub of the College community, this room is your dedicated space to relax between classes. It’s also a great place to meet new friends on different courses, as it is a communal space for all students on campus.

£2 MILLION MARGARET STANSFELD BUILDING This beautiful building, in keeping with the historic streetscape, opened in 2015 and provides a specialist environment for students aged 16+ with learning difficulties and disabilities.

KEMPSTON CAMPUS GAS & PLUMBING TECHNOLOGY CENTRE

Our City & Guilds and British Plumbing Employers Council (BPEC) approved training centre based in Kempston, will provide you with some of the most advanced equipment in the UK including, solar panels, photovoltaic (PV) panels, rain water harvesting, Dimplex ground source, heat and air pumps, and unvented hot water systems.

VEHICLE TECHNOLOGY CENTRE Also based in Kempston, our dedicated automotive training facility is the ultimate environment to develop your technical vehicle repair skills. The Centre is kitted out with engine and repair bays, paint mix and spray rooms and a body repair area – the ultimate environment for a budding mechanic.

APPRENTICESHIPS As an apprentice, you’ll get all the benefits of studying with Bedford College for an industry recognised qualification, while working in your chosen discipline. We are the largest apprenticeship provider in the county, which means we offer a wide range of apprenticeships for you to choose from. WHAT IS AN APPRENTICESHIP? An apprenticeship is a programme of work-based learning. To be enrolled as an apprentice an organisation must have offered you a contract of employment and agreed to pay your wage and support you throughout your training. Your job role must include a range of work relevant to the apprenticeship qualifications you wish to undertake.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE? Apprenticeships take between one and four years to complete depending on the type and level undertaken.

HOW WILL I SPEND MY TIME? For most apprenticeship programmes, you will need to attend College, either for one day per week (day release) or for a few weeks at a time (block release).

ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION SUBJECT AREA HIGHLIGHTS If you are a mature student without the standard qualifications to enter higher education, this one year intensive course is for you. Our Access courses build the skills, knowledge and confidence you need to progress on to higher education in the subject area youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re interested in. This study programme will provide you with a practical introduction to working with animals. Areas of study on this programme are varied and will allow you to develop the practical skills required to work in the animal care industry. The centre has a large animal collection and provides an ideal setting for you to gain valuable, industry-relevant experience. Units of study in the programme will also provide you with underpinning knowledge of animal biology and health.

The Extended Diploma is a two year full-time study programme that includes both animal management and science. You will study 15 subjects, three of which are external assessed. With so many species it can be quite daunting to get to grips with all the requirements, but you learn something new every day and the weekly practical sessions ensure you gain experience in every area.

Year on year our HND Graphic Design students beat UK universities in industry-set challenges for creative solutions in advertising and marketing. This study programme will introduce you to a wide range of art, design and craft techniques through a mix of studio-based projects, lectures, teamwork and one-to-one teaching. You will develop a comprehensive portfolio of work that reflects improvements in your ability, and gain an insight into various disciplines within art and design.

This exciting study programme will encourage you to experiment in a diverse range of disciplines, such as interior and product design. You will have the opportunity to work with a wide variety of materials, including glass, wood, metal, ceramics and plastics. During this study programme you will be exposed to a variety of different types of animation such as 2D, 3D and stop motion. You will also explore Illustration and Games Concept Art Design, with some aspect of Level Creation. You will gain experience in using a variety of programmes, including the Adobe Suite and Maxon’s Cinema 4D.

During this study programme you will explore various aspects of fashion and textile design, including surface pattern for fashion and interiors, fashion visualisation and illustration, and sculptural textiles/fashion. You will also have the opportunity to learn silk screen printing, machine and hand embroidery, paper making, fabric manipulation techniques, draping, transfer printing, computer aided design, felt making, and drawing. The emphasis will be on experimentation with materials and ideas generation for fashion, textile, interior and illustration outcomes.

BUSINESS SUBJECT AREA HIGHLIGHTS Our Business department is accredited by professional bodies, including the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT), and the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM). This means that you can be confident that the skills you are learning have real value in industry. You will undertake a work placement as part of your study programme, giving you valuable experience within the industry, alongside various trips to see how companies work. Our students have recently visited Woburn Safari Park, Luton Magistrates Court, Westfield and British Airways to aid the units of the courses including Customer Services and Law. Students also took part in activities and simulations that enabled them to develop the skills required to deliver outstanding customer service and gained an understanding of its impact on the reputation and performance of the airline.

SUZANNE’S STORY STUDY PROGRAMME: BUSINESS ADVANCED LEVEL 3 I came to England four years ago from the Congo. I had always wanted to study law to enable me to help defend people and their rights, so I enrolled on to an English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) course at a college where I lived in London and worked my way up through the levels. After finishing the ESOL course, I realised that there were lots of aspects of law in business. I decided to enrol on to the Business full-time study programme here at Bedford College, where I could also study GCSE English and maths. You have to attend a work experience placement as part of the study programme. I worked in the HR department of a care home in Bedford and was so proud when they offered me a part-time job at the end of it.

SHANE’S STORY STUDY PROGRAMME: CHILDCARE ADVANCED LEVEL 3 I’ve progressed through all the levels of childcare, initially starting with Foundation Skills as I didn’t have any qualifications when I left school. I’ve spent much of my life looking after my brothers who have special needs, so I know a lot about children and studying this programme seemed to make sense. I’m on a work placement now at Pilgrims Pre-Preparatory School working as a nursery nurse assistant. I’m involved in planning play activities, observing the children and understanding how we can help each child develop further or if they need help with a specific problem.

Our tutors have worked in the IT industry in a wide range of roles including networking, programming, PC maintenance, website development and helpdesk support, so you will benefit greatly from their expertise and industry knowledge. Outside of the classroom, educational visits are organised to give you the opportunity to see how IT is used in a real life setting. Previous visits include the Thinktank Science Museum in Birmingham, the Science Museum in London, CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research in Geneva, Thorpe Park and Vauxhall. The Level 2 study programme provided me with a broad introduction to IT, but I am really enjoying the Level 3 because we get to focus on networking. Our tutors have all enjoyed successful careers in the industry and now take the lead in shaping the UKâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s construction and building services training sector, talking at high profile industry events such as Ecobuild, the leading event for sustainable design, construction, energy and the built environment. This means they have direct input into what you, as a student, will learn to ensure that you stand out from the crowd when it comes to looking for a job. We also have strong links with local employers. During your study programme you will work on and produce real life working projects. You will also be taken on trips, experience educational visits and have guest speakers from the industry come into College. The tutors make each unit feel very different from the previous one and this helps to keep my mind fresh. They have even set me up with work experience at an aeronautical company. There is a mutual respect between tutor and student, and this is what pushes you forward. Last year I won the Engineering Student of the Year award, and had the pleasure of going to the Mercedes F1 as a Test Technician. I worked beside a team that tested the engine for the Singapore Grand Prix. I was also named runner up in the College’s overall Outstanding Student of the Year across all subject areas. After College I would like to study Aerospace Engineering with Space Technology at university and would eventually like to be part of a team that sends space craft to Mars.

EQUINE MANAGEMENT SUBJECT AREA HIGHLIGHTS The equine care and management study programmes at Shuttleworth College enable you to develop the theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed to pursue a successful career working with horses. Our fantastic equine facilities at Mount Pleasant, part of Shuttleworth College Campus, are equipped with covered stabling, two indoor arenas, classrooms and a student rest room. Here you can take advantage of tuition in riding, as well as all aspects of equine care and management. Alongside practical skills you will develop your knowledge in areas such as equine health and welfare, equine feeding and nutrition and the anatomy and physiology of horses. Guest speakers visit Mount Pleasant to give lectures and demonstrations, which complement the clinics and events held at the College. My riding has improved, I’ve learnt effective ways of carrying out jobs on the yard and enjoyed an exciting work placement – and that’s just been Year One! I really enjoy the riding element of the study programme; we get to ride two days a week – one flatwork and one jumping session - and there is a range of different ability horses to ride, which helps to develop your skills and confidence. We have yard duties every three weeks and have also been able to complete the BHS Progressive Riding Tests for free, which will be good to show future employers. The tutors are all so friendly and always willing to give help and advice. It’s a great environment here and much more independent than school – you take responsibility for your own learning. I’d love to get into equine physiotherapy after I finish the study programme. My horse has had to have physio for an injury and it’s something I have become very interested in. I’ve always had a passion for beauty “and knew it was what I wanted to do

from quite a young age. My favourite beauty treatment that I like to give is a facial; it’s so relaxing and makes you feel better about yourself. One day I’d love to own my own spa.

”

The study programme at college enables me to learn about lots of different treatments including waxing, manicures, pedicures and make-up – and because we are based in a working salon here at BROOKS, we have real clients to work with. As part of the programme we have to do 50 hours of work experience, but I have done more hours than this at various places including Champneys Spa and local salons. We have also had training days with staff from Dermalogica and Steiner cruise ships.

HOSPITALITY & CATERING SUBJECT AREA HIGHLIGHTS Hospitality & Catering is a hugely varied industry that enables you to be creative, travel and meet new people. From hotels, bars, restaurants, hospitals and the armed services, if you have the drive and enthusiasm, there are many exciting opportunities for you to develop and succeed. Our training department, including our commercial 25 Restaurant, is the perfect place to hone your culinary talent or service skills. The restaurant is open to the public during term-time, which means as a student you will be creating or serving delicious dishes to real paying customers under the watchful eye of our supportive tutors. Our students also benefit from participation in national and international competitions. We recently hosted one of six regional finals of Futurechef 2015, which involved exhibitors including Babcock International and BaxterStorey who were on hand to give careers advice to our students for prospective jobs and further training within the industry. One of our students also progressed on to the national final. A number of groups of Advanced Level students entered a national cooking competition, again held here on campus, in conjunction with Terinex, who produce oven bags for the catering industry.

LAND & THE ENVIRONMENT SUBJECT AREA HIGHLIGHTS We are very privileged that our Shuttleworth College Campus is situated in a large conservation area containing grassland, woodland, a working farm, lakes and fisheries centre. Our students spend a lot of time out and about, seeing how things work in the industry, meeting employers and taking part in shows and events. In 2017, our Horticulture students won a silver medal for their garden design at the Ideal Home Show in London, which they have now achieved for the past three years. Horticulture students have visited a range of sites including guided tours of Kew gardens, RHS Wisley and Cambridge Botanical Gardens. Our Agriculture students work closely with the local employers and industry specialists. Agriculture students have been to the Paris Agriculture show, competed with our livestock at national events, attending crop walks and taken part in workshops with advanced agricultural machinery supplied by CASEiH and local machinery suppliers. Learners take part in residential trips including visits to conservation sites in Northumberland and the New Forest. In addition our close links in Europe have presented opportunities for our Fisheries learners to attend an advanced fisheries aquaculture programme at Groenwelle in Holland.

The Extended Diploma in Countryside Management is designed to provide a springboard for you to progress on to a university degree, or to find work in the countryside industry, which includes sectors as diverse as habitat conservation, game management, conservation and environmental assessment to estate management. It also provides training for people who are interested in working in allied industries, such as equipment sales, land-based industries, retail and recreation.

ABBY’S STORY STUDY PROGRAMME: AGRICULTURE ADVANCED LEVEL 3 I hadn’t studied Agriculture before but I really enjoy it. My favourite part is the livestock because it’s very rewarding and I enjoy the challenges it brings – looking after the sheep and cattle, and of course the lambing season! The facilities at Kingshill Farm are brilliant and there is a separate mechanisation yard with all the tractors and farming equipment. I’ve just joined the onsite gym and the library is good too. I live in Dunstable, which isn’t a problem because the College run bus service covers the area. When I started at Shuttleworth I didn’t want to go to university, but my tutor has inspired me to learn more.

and hopefully pursue a career in farming.

MOTOR VEHICLE SUBJECT AREA HIGHLIGHTS Our Vehicle Technology Centre in Kempston is kitted out with engine and repair bays, paint mixing room, spraybooth and a body repair area. All of our tutors have worked in garages in their careers and every one of our students agrees that they have up-to-date subject knowledge. This means we will teach you techniques that are likely to become compulsory in the future, such as working on electric cars. Our students also benefit from professional links with the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) as well as major employers in the area to keep abreast of industry changes: just one example is Vauxhall Motors, who have donated a number of ex-trial vehicles to us to help students test their diagnostic skills on the very latest technology. Some of our students move on to apprenticeships after their course; some with Vauxhall where they have had great experiences, from being a member of a pit crew on the annual VXR Power Event, to servicing and preparing an ambulance for a 10,000 mile charity drive to Mongolia.

TAMARA’S STORY STUDY PROGRAMME: MOTOR VEHICLE ADVANCED LEVEL 3 There is a really nice atmosphere in the department and everyone is very welcoming. With no previous motor vehicle experience, I worked my way up. I enjoy the practical side of the study programme as I like to get my hands dirty.

The facilities are excellent – we “ usually get a car each to work on – and

the tutors teach in a very interactive way.

For example, they might bring a part of an engine into a theory lesson to help explain something technical. I much prefer this way of learning, compared to school. We also have companies come in to talk to us about the motor vehicle industry, including the HGV division of John Lewis, which is based in Milton Keynes.

OUTDOOR ADVENTURE SUBJECT AREA HIGHLIGHTS Our Shuttleworth College Campus has beautiful, spacious outdoor surroundings, allowing you to develop skills in outdoor adventurous activities. The study programme also uses external venues such as Grafham Water Sailing Club, Big Rock Climbing Centre and the local footpaths and waterways. As part of the study programme you will be involved in a rotation of practical activities on a weekly basis. These will focus upon sailing, kayaking, canoeing and climbing. Alongside this you will study a wide range of theoretical and practical units associated with the principles and practices of outdoor adventure, skills development, coaching and leadership. You will have the opportunity to attend residential trips to centres such as Outward Bound in the Lake District and Plas Menai Watersports Centre in Wales. You will also be required to plan and undertake expeditions, in the past these have included canoeing in Snowdonia and mountaineering in the Lake District. The courses will help you to develop the skills needed within the industry, as well as offering a range of qualifications that will help you progress your career by gaining employment or moving on to higher education. National Governing Body opportunities include British Canoeing Level 1 coach in paddlesports, RYA Dinghy Instructor and MLTE Climbing Wall Award. You will also benefit from the strong industry links the College has with a wide range of outdoor activity providers, which enable us to offer you a diverse selection of work placements both in the UK and across Europe. Past students have also been involved in competing nationally and world-wide for GB squads in canoe slalom, downhill mountain biking and achieving scholarships as a ski instructor.

This study programme will help you to acquire general skills, knowledge and understanding of acting technique theatre and devising, classical and contemporary performance. RYAN’S STORY STUDY PROGRAMME: SPORT ADVANCED LEVEL 3 Ryan has been a keen footballer since he was 14 and knew he wanted to study sport after finishing school. Having explored options at his local sixth form, he enrolled on to the Sport Level 3 Extended Diploma at Bedford College. “The tutors really sold the study programme to me when I came to an open day,” says Ryan.

Swissport is the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s largest aviation services provider, and is offering a small number of colleges around the country the opportunity to become part of their academy. Being part the of the Swissport Academy will bring a number of benefits to our students including airport visits, guest speakers and a guaranteed interview with Swissport. Our students have a strong track record of finding fantastic employment after their course. Some have become cabin crew for Thomson, easyJet and Ryanair; holiday reps for Thomas Cook, Thomson and Kuoni; ground staff for Virgin Atlantic; check-in staff for Menzies Aviation; and customer service staff for Signature Aviation. Our trips have previously included Marbella and Gibraltar. Students visited the marina, took cable cars to the rock and got friendly with the monkeys before coming back down and going dolphin spotting on a dolphin safari! Other trips have included: two days in Amsterdam with an additional cheese and clog experience, sightseeing and canal cruise; two days in Dublin and Belfast visiting the Titanic Museum and the Guiness factory. Day trips have included Drayton, Thorpe Park, The London Eye, London Dungeons, World Travel Market, Emirates Skyline, various airports and many more! We have also visited British Airways for our Cabin Crew training days.

OLIVIA’S STORY STUDY PROGRAMME: TRAVEL & TOURISM LEVEL 2, LEVEL 3 AND HND I came to Bedford College in September 2012 and started on the Travel & Tourism Level 2 study programme. My journey continued as I progressed on the Level 3 course; I was gaining lots of knowledge of the industry and was even nominated as Class Representative, which involved attending meetings with the College’s executive team on behalf of our course. I was not aware of the option to study at degree-level at College, but with the help and guidance from the tutors I soon learnt about the HNC course.

This course offered such a great “variety of options that I decided to further my studies at Bedford College.

UNIFORMED PUBLIC SERVICES SUBJECT AREA HIGHLIGHTS Studying Uniformed Public Services will help you to develop the skills, fitness and determination to put yourself ahead of the rest, with career paths that include the armed forces, emergency services, paramedical services or the prison service and many more. All of our lecturers have worked in public service roles in the armed forces and emergency services, which give an extra dimension to lessons and will enable you to draw on their vocational experience. As a student, you will have opportunities to visit and train with the RAF, Army and Fire Service. As well as this, you will be able to go on trips. Recent visits have included wild camping in Snowdonia National Park and work experience with the British Army, participating in fieldcraft and military exercises. Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll also have access to a wide range of excellent facilities here on campus. Springs is our multi-million pound sports centre, home to our highly-esteemed Sport Academy. We are also situated next to the river and various parks, which means access to kayaking, orienteering, raft building and other activities.

HEATHER’S STORY STUDY PROGRAMME: UNIFORMED PUBLIC SERVICES ADVANCED LEVEL 3 I started thinking about joining the armed forces or emergency services when I was still at school. Coming to College made the whole process real. We went on expeditions to the Peak District and to Wales, had guest speakers come in and trips to RAF bases. It was one trip in particular to RAF Brize Norton that convinced me that the RAF was the path for me. Without all these brilliant experiences I really don’t think I could have made my decision.

This study programme will provide you with the opportunity to develop skills and experiences that will help you to pursue a career in the uniformed public services, and is ideal if you wish to join the armed forces, emergency services, paramedical services or the prison service. The study programme will allow you to participate in a wide range of activities to aid your learning, such as outdoor pursuits, fitness training and team building events. You will gain valuable insight from current and former public services employees, as teaching staff have served as members of the Armed Forces or emergency services. You will also have the opportunity to meet working members of the public services.
