ENGLISH AND MATHS
WORK EXPERIENCE
Love them or hate them, English and maths are essential for work and education! Many employers complain that too many young people lack the literacy (English) and numeracy (maths) skills needed for jobs in today’s workplace. If you’re not yet ready for work, but want to continue in education, you’ll also find that entry on to higher level courses requires grades 9–4 or A*– C in GCSE English and maths. In short, they’re very important and we’ll help you get the grades you need.
Work experience is a key (and fun!) part of your full-time study programme at College. We have strong links with hundreds of employers in every industry area to ensure we find the best placement for you. Every student has a minimum of 20 hours per year/ programme of external work experience. Here’s a little peek at where some of our recent students have spent theirs: • 3D Applied Design students organised ‘Hey Clay’ workshops for the general public to attend • Art & Design Students hosted cartoon workshops in conjunction with Bedford Library • Engineering students undertook work experience projects with companies such as London Electronic, Cranfield Precision and Pressfab Engineering • Fine Art students organised an exhibition in The Arcade, Bedford for The Teenage Cancer Trust • Hair & Beauty Students completed work experience with Centreparcs Woburn Aqua Sana Spa
t the end of the day your “ Asuccess at College is down to you, and I like that. It’s a mature environment that makes you grow up a lot more than I think you would do by staying at school. We have everything we need here and it’s nice to have access to the industrial machines and the opportunities to use them. I’ve learnt so much so far and I’m really looking forward to going into my second year!” Ruby | Fashion & Textiles Level 3

Apprenticeships WHAT IS AN APPRENTICESHIP?
THE BENEFITS
An apprenticeship is a programme of work-based learning. To be enrolled as an apprentice, an organisation must have offered you a contract of employment and agreed to pay your wage and support you throughout your training.
You’ll need enthusiasm and commitment to study and work in a particular industry, but the rewards will be significant:
Your job role must include a range of work relevant to the apprenticeship qualifications you wish to undertake. HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE? Apprenticeships take between one and four years to complete depending on the type and level undertaken.
• Get the best of both worlds by earning as you learn • Choose from a wide range of practical trades and jobs • We will help you find an employer from our excellent links with hundreds of top employers • Gain industry-recognised qualifications, Functional Skills and specialist techniques that could see you progress to high-level jobs in your chosen sector • Learn from valuable job experience and time spent developing your skills on a day-to-day basis • After finishing, 90% of apprentices will stay in employment with 71% staying with the same employer1 • Employers believe that apprentices are 15% more employable than graduates with other qualifications2
HOW WILL I SPEND MY TIME? For most apprenticeship programmes, you will need to attend College, either for one day per week (day release) or for a few weeks at a time (block release).

Our Access courses build the skills, knowledge and confidence you need to progress on to higher education in the subject area you’re interested in. They are recognised by universities across the UK and allow entry on to higher education courses in your chosen specialist area. You will gain a good introduction to your chosen subject, develop your study skills and increase your confidence and ability with this level of study. The course takes one year and, on completion, you will gain an Access to Higher Education Diploma. All pathways will include compulsory English and maths, as well as research skills units. If you are aged 19 or over, you may qualify for an Advanced Learner Loan to help you pay the tuition fees for this course. ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION
hen I left school I started an admin role with the Police, working my W “ way up to research work after four years where I stayed for another eight years. The idea of teaching had always been at the back of my mind and it was working with children as a Beaver Scout Leader that made me decide now was the time to get started. I contacted the University of Bedfordshire about teaching courses and they directed me to the Access
course at Bedford College. The course will enable me to move on to the university’s Primary Education course, which will lead to Qualified Teacher Status at the end of the three years.
I really enjoy the psychology and sociology elements of the course and the different theories we learn. We also study child development, and everyone on the course has undertaken a work placement at a local school. We’re a really supportive group and enjoy working together on joint projects. I want to make a difference through teaching and my passion is with primary education – most people remember their primary teachers more than their secondary teachers! I’m really glad I started this course at College. I’ve found learning easier this time around, thanks to the support of my tutors, and I now feel fully prepared for university.” Rebecca | Access To Teacher Education

CARE & CHILDCARE
hen I started the Level 2 in Childcare “ Where at College I wanted to become a Social Worker. However, now I have changed my mind and would like to be a Criminologist because I find it a fascinating area to study. There are aspects of criminology and mental health on this programme, so once I have completed the Level 3, I plan to apply to university to study Criminology and eventually work in a police department.
Although I miss school, I have found that College offers you more freedom and that the tutors here are really nice and funny, so you can have a laugh with them. They give you lots of feedback and I have got used to writing the assignments we have to do as part of the assessment. I use the Learning Resources Centre (LRC) regularly; I really like it as there are plenty of books for the study programme and you can use the computers and different silent and group work zones. My favourite part of the programme so far has been the Creative Therapies unit where we have worked on tasks such as making an object from playdoh and learning how to clearly describe it to someone who might be blind, or learning how to describe simple tasks to someone with dementia.” Buse | Health & Social Care Level 2

Our Cisco lab was used to host a warm-up for the WorldSkills IT Networking final held in Sao Paulo, Brazil and the WorldSkills organisers praised it as ‘one of the best’ in the UK. In the past our students have got through to the UK finals at the NEC in Birmingham where they had to work under pressure to produce high-quality websites and networks to win medals.

I decided I didn’t want to study at sixth form anymore, “ Wmyhenjourney at College began. I had just painted my own bedroom, so thought I would try studying a course in painting and decorating. I started studying at Bedford College on a full-time study programme and then, about a year in, a local company came into the College looking for an apprentice. My tutor asked me if I wanted to do it, and it’s been a really good decision. I am now learning both on the job and at College, and I also received a £500 bursary
from the Connolly Foundation to help with costs. I work for Coles Decor in Biggleswade on two week block release from College.
I enjoy painting the most, especially stencilling work. All of my tutors are so helpful and they allow you to work how you want to work. It’s a pretty relaxed environment and, although I’m one of the only girls in the department, everyone is really easy to get along with.
After the apprenticeship comes to an end I want to get into full-time employment to gain more experience before hopefully becoming a self-employed Painter & Decorator.” Eleana | Painting & Decorating Level 2 Apprenticeship

ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION
’d been a stay at home dad for several “ Iyears and was researching my options with regards to becoming a self-employed Electrician. After speaking with a couple of established electrical
contractors in Milton Keynes, it became clear that Bedford College was well respected by the trade.
There are two main components to the course; theory and practical. While the course does consist of a significant amount of electrical related maths, I have found that Bedford College does provide the support needed to master the electrical theory and any maths involved; the tutors here are very experienced and know how to best assist the students to master the theory. The other main part of the course consists of practical experience in the College’s workshop. As someone who not only aims to become a self-employed Electrician, but who also enjoys working with his hands, I have truly enjoyed the opportunity to actually practice the electrical installation work. Over the course of the year we have been taught everything from the basics of how to correctly strip and terminate cable through to installing steel conduit and testing our work using test instruments. Once I’ve successfully completed Level 2, I can enrol on to the Electrical Installation Level 3 course. Completing this course puts a student in a fantastic position to be employed in the trade as a trainee Electrician in order to get the work experience they need for final assessment to become fully qualified.” Simon | Electrical Installation Level 2

ENGINEERING
wanted a fresh start after finishing my “ IGCSEs and this study programme at Bedford College caught my eye. I went along to the taster day and it hooked me!
I do a lot of programming at home, so my favourite part of the programme is the microcontrollers, basically very small computers on a single circuit. You wouldn’t find anywhere else offering the same level of facilities we have here at College – they’re fantastic.
With the opening of the new engineering building we now have more electronics labs, CNC equipment and robots to work with. My work experience placement this year is at Cranfield Precision Engineering where I will get to develop my programming skills. When I finish the Level 3 I will either stay at College to study the HNC in the new building or apply for an apprenticeship with an engineering firm, such as Lockheed Martin. It’s been a good decision to come here; the tutors are so knowledgeable and experienced in their field, the class sizes are smaller than at school and people are friendlier and have a greater level of respect for each other.” Timothy | Electrical & Electronic Engineering Level 3

Hair & Beauty We are renowned for producing award-winning students who consistently perform at their best. In the last few years alone, students have won the Pantene Pro-V Awards and the Hairdressing Council’s ‘Student of the Year’ award four times, as well as being placed first runner-up in the finals of the national Jane Iredale makeup competition out of over 200 colleges who entered. Just some of the secrets to this success are the industry knowledge that staff provide our students with, which keeps them up-to-date with the latest techniques and trends, and the expert teaching of specific technical treatment skills. BROOKS Hair & Beauty Salon in Bedford town centre is our working salon. It is open to the public, and enables you to gain experience working with clients to meet their needs with full support from tutors. Our students also keep busy outside of the salon. Recently they have visited the Dermalogica headquarters and undertake local community work, such as for the Bedford Blues Rugby Charity Day.

ince leaving school I have studied for a “Sdegree in Floristry and completed a parttime Accounting course.
I still love doing floristry, but unfortunately it was not providing consistent work; I needed something that would guarantee full-time work, and I love working with people, so I chose Barbering. I’m a very creative person, so I knew I could incorporate this into barbering.
I came to Bedford College because it is local and has a good reputation. The Barbering programme was recommended to me and all I can say is, I wish I had done it earlier! I love coming here everyday and just don’t want it to end. My tutor has been a brilliant support and has flown me through the programme. I’ve had work experience with Jagged Edge Barbers where I helped on the till, with stock checks, gowning up and shampooing hair. After the Level 2 I am going to move on to the Level 3 with Jagged Edge Barbers Academy and have been offered a position with them.
