Introduction to UAL Level 2 Diploma • The UAL Awarding Body Level 2 Award and Diploma in Art & Design has been developed to provide students with an interest in art and design with the opportunity to explore the materials, methods and processes that support art and design activities, and to begin to develop some related technical skills. • The qualifications draw upon established approaches to teaching, learning and assessment that are successfully proven to appeal to and engage students seeking practical study over a more academic study route. The qualification's structure provides a linked introduction to the broad context within which art and design activity sits.


Entry Requirements

• Level 2 Art & Design:

– 3 GCSEs grades 9-3 including English and Maths OR equivalent qualification at Level 1


Why you need to study English & Maths • Government policy is all 16-18 year olds with grades below 4/C are to continue studying English and or Maths. Both are essential qualifications to hold within the development of any career. • If you have passed ‘Literature’ but not ‘Language’ we would encourage you to re-sit • Those not required to undertake English &/or Math will work on an additional qualification relevant to your pathway


What you would be studying The Level 2 Award in Art & Design is made up of two mandatory units. Diploma in Art & Design Students must complete Units 1–2 of the Award, in addition to Units 3–7 and Unit 8. You will leave with the experience, knowledge and a portfolio of work to prepare yourself for progression to Level 3 in Art and Design.

Unit Breakdown • Unit 1 Introduction to materials, processes and technical skills in art and design • Unit 2 Introduction to contextual research in art and design • Unit 3 Introduction to drawing skills • Unit 4 Introduction to communication skills in art and design • Unit 5 Solving 2D creative problems • Unit 6 Solving 3D creative problems • Unit 7 Solving time-based creative problems • Unit 8 Developing and producing a personal project in art and design


How the course is taught and assessed

You will be assessed at regular intervals during the study programme. The project briefs will tell you what you need to do and tutors will advise on how to improve your performance.


Our expectations • You bring a willingness to study and explore a range of techniques and mediums enabling you to enhance your skills and portfolio. • We expect excellent attendance and commitment applied to all areas of the program: main, enhancement, and work experience, tutorial (and English/math/ Workshop where appropriate)


Attendance and self-study required • We expected attendance of no less than 94%. If you are unable to come in you will be given contact details to inform us that day. – Poor unjustified attendance may result in disciplinary proceedings taking place

• We set limited homework as we find students naturally engage with the subject at home: research, sketching etc. – If you have missed sessions though we would expect you to catch up in your own time


How long the course is • This is a 1 year course. We start early September and conclude at the end of June. • The end graded unit is usually submitted at the end of May • Timetables are structured around 4 days starting at 9am and concluding at 4:30pm (this will not be the hours each day)


What could the course lead to • Majority of student’s progress to the Level 3 in Art and Design. • Others do progress into employment, apprenticeships etc and support for all options is placed into both the enhancement and tutorial program.


Personal Tutor system

• To assist with any issues you have regarding the course or to assist in you finding support for financial and wellbeing issues etc.


Additional costs and equipment required • We will require payment of £50 at enrolment to cover a number of subject related trips throughout the first year. This will range from museums/ galleries in London, Oxford etc • Over the summer you will be send a list of materials you may wish to purchase to help with your studies. • Majority of resources are available within your rooms • Recommended though is a good quality sketchbook that will last for years and possibly a folder to take work away in. Both we sell within the department at a reasonable price


Travel to college

• A ‘means tested’ travel bursary is available for students living outside a 3 mile radius. Once you have accepted


College facilities and support services • We have excellent library facilities our students utilise frequently and an on campus Mezz • Student services are based in the Tower Block (in main reception) and are there to support you with any issues you may have (they will introduce themselves and services they provide during your induction week). • Any financial support you feel you require or are entitled to, you will need to contact this department

To have support in place ready for the start of the year, please inform your interviewer that you have any additional support needs / EHCP

• Thursday 22nd June 2024 – An opportunity to meet the team – Ask questions – View student work – Meet other new students joining in September – Partake in short exercises
