INFLUENCE & IMPACT 2021
MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL 2021 was strange and, at times, frustrating as students had to cope with lockdowns and remote learning. As always our staff, students and employers did us proud. Staff worked hard to ensure students could continue working at all times, employers continued to support their apprentices, and students responded magnificently to the pandemic, including keeping everyone safe by following our Covid protocols. As a result, 2021 was a very successful year: a new campus at Wellingborough, a Centre for Modern Construction at Bedford, and successful bids to develop new centres at Corby and expand our Sixth Form at Bedford. Staff and student feedback was better than ever, and our financial health remains the envy of the sector. Thank you to everyone who contributed to that success and I hope you enjoy the report. I an Pryce CBE
Principal & Chief Executive, The Bedford College Group
MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR OF THE CORPORATION Notwithstanding the challenges of COVID-19 during 2021, our students and staff have continued to succeed and have a positive impact on their local communities and the region. This continued success has provided a crucial platform for growth and development as the Group moves to agreeing its new strategic plan that will take us towards 2030, and which will be underpinned by a commitment to sustainability in all its forms. One example of this is our intention to become a net zero carbon organisation, and the opening of the £4.3 million Connolly Centre for Modern Construction in September this year was a big step in that direction. Modernisation and sustainability are at the core of the training that is offered in the Centre, not only providing the next generation of construction professionals with access to outstanding skills training, but the building itself is highly energy efficient and incorporates a wide range of cutting-edge and sustainable features. This is a good example of how the Group will approach the next few years, as we implement our new strategic plan. Our reputation and relative financial strength means that we are well placed to continue with this innovative and sustainable approach, delivering high-quality education in state-of-the-art facilities which has a positive impact on students, staff and the community around us. BEDFORD COLLEGE SERVICES
BEDFORD COLLEGE SERVICES
Bedford College Services (BCS) is the commercial wing of The Bedford College Group that operates across the leisure, hospitality, catering, theatre and facilities hire sectors. Much of our business was closed from January 2021 until March 2021, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. During this time BCS supported the Group by managing the Covid-19 testing process for staff and students across Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire. Once lockdown eased, BCS staff worked hard to build the business back up and managed to achieve a turnover of £744,593 for 2021.

SUSTAINABILITY
SUSTAINABILIT Y The Bedford College Group has ambitious plans to be a net zero carbon organisation by 2050 and environmental issues have moved to the forefront of the Group’s planning. Feasibility studies have already assessed where carbon emissions could be cut across several sites in Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire, and in 2021 the Group particularly focused on the Bedford College campus as some of the buildings have been on the site for almost 70 years. Steps were taken to save over 350 tonnes of carbon (the equivalent to driving 253 passenger vehicles for one year) following major infrastructure upgrades and the opening of the Connolly Centre for Modern Construction. This specialist centre is expected to receive an official A+ on its energy performance certificate and will be the Group’s first Net Zero Carbon building. The Group was successful in securing £2.8 million of grant funding from the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme (PSDS) delivered by Salix Finance via the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS). The grant was used to install a Water Source Heat Pump (WSHP), Genius Controls, highly efficient Mechanical Ventilation and Heat Recovery, hot water efficient taps, photovoltaic (PV), roof insulation and water heaters at the Bedford College campus. Three other sites benefitted from PV panels: the Zoological Education Centre at Shuttleworth College near Biggleswade; Tresham College’s Wellingborough campus in Northamptonshire and the Trinity buildings which are part of The Bedford Sixth Form campus in Bromham Road, Bedford.

These organisations have come together to bring practitioner and other forms of post-16 education and training research, into the heart of sector organisations. This collaborative endeavour is run by and for the sector and seeks to raise the profile, standing and value of post-16 education and training through its own research undertaken by its own community, and by leading thinking to develop forms of research and enquiry that reflect the requirements of the sector. As a member of The Research College Group, The Bedford College Group is committed to promoting research. Recent examples of this from the Group include:

FUTURE PLANS
FUTURE PLANS
£3.9M B O OST FOR THE BEDFORD SIXTH FORM A £3.9 million redevelopment of The Bedford Sixth Form will take place over the next year. £3.3 million of this funding was awarded by the government from their Post-16 Capital Fund. The money will be spent on refitting some of the beautiful, Victorian heritage classrooms, installing a new science lab, upgrading the lecture theatre and providing a common room. Since opening in 2012, The Bedford Sixth Form has become Bedford’s largest sixth form offering a wide range of A-Level and Diploma courses and acting as a stepping stone between school and university. Learner numbers have jumped by 37% in the past two years and this redevelopment will ensure that there is space for over 1,000 learners.

FUTURE PLANS
CREATING CORBY’S SIXTH FORM CENTRE Proposals for a state-of-the-art, specialist Sixth Form Centre in the heart of Corby Town Centre have been submitted. The Sixth Form Centre will cater for the growing 16-18 year old population in Corby and once established, will accommodate up to 600 students. The new Centre will be equipped with the latest learning technologies designed to help Sixth Form students achieve their potential and fulfil their ambitions to progress on to university or employment. As well as focusing on improving the skills of the young people within Corby and North Northamptonshire, locating the Centre within Chisholm House – a long-term vacant building – will help regenerate the town. What’s more, the Centre will be a carbon negative building, utilising the latest green technologies within the refurbishment.
£6+ MILLION HEALTH, S CIENCE & DIGITAL SKILLS CENTRE IN BEDFORD The 1960s tower block at Bedford College’s Caudwell Street campus will be undergoing a £6+ million redevelopment to transform it into a state-of-the-art science and technology building. The new Health, Science and Digital Skills Centre will include high-specification computer labs and the very latest scientific equipment, helping the College to establish an advanced digital and scientific skills offer in Bedford. It is predicted that the new Centre will generate an additional 250 learners each year and will offer degrees, subdegrees and advanced level qualifications, so that students can progress further and develop the cutting-edge skills required by employers.
