Bedford Mencap Play Scheme are looking for volunteers! We are a play scheme that support children aged 4-18 who present with Special Educational Needs (SEN). We need volunteers (aged 14+) like you to help the children have a fun and enjoyable summer in a safe environment. Our play scheme is running from 23rd July - 8th August 2019, at St John’s School, Kempston, Bedford. If you are interested, or want to find out more please email or phone Nikki (details above). We are a local Bedford charity looking for volunteers. We are Friends of Refugees and are currently hoping to find people who would be willing to help us with supporting young (under 18), unaccompanied refugees and asylum seekers to develop language skills or friendship and plan and participate in social events. There are currently 30 refugee children under the age of 18 living in Bedford and a further 20 in the 18 – 25 year age group. All of these young people have been 48
exposed to a series of traumatic experiences including the circumstances which forced them to leave their countries of origin and distressing journeys, leaving them constantly at risk of exploitation and abuse. We have found that often, the young people do not get the best access to all that they need once they arrive in the UK. We hope to bridge this gap and help to adjust to life in the UK. We already know that by exposure to English speakers and social activities, these young people do so much better than they would if left alone and we are hoping that your students might be able to offer their time to help out! Donation Sorters We receive lots of generous donations and send loads of clothes, blankets and other items to refugee camps. However, we need to sort it into what is useful for the location it's headed to. We hold regular sorting days where we all get together and make up hundreds of boxes to send. The days are lots of fun and productive, packing up items that we know will make a difference. We usually do these sorts every couple of months and need all hands on deck to help, so if you have an afternoon to spare once in a while, this role is for you!
Interpreters Imagine being somewhere where you can't communicate. You can't tell someone what's wrong or what you need. Pretty awful, right? That's where you come in! Do you speak Arabic? If so, we need a bank of people who could help as and when needed to assist in translating leaflets, or speaking to refugees and us to help better determine what we can do. We would love to have a group of people we could call on when needed to help out, so not a regular every week commitment, just what you can do, when you can!
Event Helpers We run regular events to raise money to help local refugees. This can be anything from a pub quiz to a market stall to a gala dinner. We need people to help out in various ways, you might be helping to advertise the event, fundraising, asking people for donations, serving food, hosting a quiz... this is a varied role and you could pick and choose what you want to help out with 49
depending on your likes and availability. If you have ideas for other events too, we'd love to hear from you! For more information and to apply please visit: http://www.friendsofrefugees.org.uk

The events are usually either nightclub, gig or karaoke and are held in premises with full licenses. Volunteers will be expected to not drink alcohol throughout the evening. Volunteers may mingle or dance with the attendees, they may help as a steward and ensure that everyone enters the event in a safe manner. Volunteers and members are all there to have fun and a large part of the role is ensuring that everyone is having fun in a safe way. Performing Arts Centre Volunteer - we run a performing arts centre on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday daytime. We have 2 bands, a live internet radio show, we are currently working on a musical and we do arts and crafts.
