studied the Level 3 Animal Management “ Istudy programme here at the College and decided to stay and progress on to higher education partly because I knew the tutors and their way of teaching, but also because the Ecology unit appealed to me. I have always wanted to be a Zookeeper, but I am now also considering work in conservation, or possibly zoo education because I have been inspired by my tutors sharing their knowledge and now I want to do the same. Degree-level study is opening up lots of doors in the industry and I will certainly top up to the full BSc Degree after the Foundation Degree.” Harriet | Animal Management Foundation Degree (FdSc)

ENGLISH AND MATHS:
Love them or hate them, English and maths are essential for work and education. Many employers complain that too many young people lack the literacy (English) and numeracy (maths) skills needed for jobs in today’s workplace. If you’re not yet ready for work, but want to continue in education, you’ll also find that entry on to higher level courses requires grades 9–4 or A* – C in GCSE English and maths. In short, they’re very important and we’ll help you get the grades you need.
WORK EXPERIENCE Work experience is a key (and fun!) part of your full-time study programme at college. We have strong links with hundreds of employers in every industry area to ensure we find the best placement for you. Every student has a minimum of 20 hours of external work experience per year. Here’s a little peek at where some of our recent students have spent theirs: • Paradise Wildlife Park – Animal Management • Shepreth Wildlife Park – Animal Management • Woburn Estate – Countryside & Wildlife Management • PGL Activity Centre, Isle of Wight – Outdoor Adventure • Keith Harte Bloodstock at Woburn Stud – Equine Management • Dan Skelton’s [racehorse trainer] racing yard – Equine Management • Veterinary practices • Arable and livestock farms • Garden centres • Landscaping companies

THE BENEFITS
An apprenticeship is a programme of work-based learning. To be an apprentice an organisation must have offered you a contract of employment and pay you a salary as well as support you through your training.

• get the best of both worlds by earning as you learn • choose from a wide range of practical trades and jobs • gain industry-recognised qualifications, Functional Skills and specialist techniques that could see you progress to high-level jobs in your chosen sector • learn from valuable job experience and time spent developing your skills on a day-to-day basis • after finishing, 90% of apprentices will stay in employment with 71% staying with the same employer1 • employers believe that apprentices are 15% more employable than graduates with other qualifications2.
HOW WILL I SPEND MY TIME? For most apprenticeship programmes you will need to attend college either for one day per week (day release) or for a few weeks at a time (block release).

huttleworth College has always “ Sbeen on my radar and when I finished school I knew I couldn’t be in a classroom any longer. I love being outside and want to get into landscape gardening, so this study programme was an obvious choice. It’s such a lovely environment here at College and
everyone is so nice. The tutors will go out of their way to help you, as well as all other staff and even tutors on different courses! We’re like one big family.
I really enjoy propagation as it is fascinating to see things grow, as well as plant science, which involves work in the onsite lab. The walled garden is very smart and we have our own space for theory and practical work. My work experience placement with a landscaping company will give me the opportunity to transfer my skills in machinery maintenance and knowledge of plants and safety procedures in a commercial environment. After College I hope to either study Garden Design at university or start work straight away.” Imogen | Horticulture Level 3
