A-LEVELS
A-Levels are academic, examination-based qualifications recognised as traditional qualifications to gain entry to university and higher education. A-Levels focus mainly on academic subjects and qualify for UCAS points (maximum 56 UCAS points per A-Level).
A-LEVELS & DIPLOMAS
Here at The Bedford Sixth Form we offer a large range of A-Level subjects, Diploma courses (which are equivalent to A-Levels) and a GCSE Foundation Programme.
The GCSE Foundation Programme is for those who need to secure the grades to to meet the entry requirements to move on to A-Level study. Those studying A-Levels or Diplomas (Level 3) will study here for two years.
You can pick and choose from our wide range of A-Levels and Diplomas to ensure you achieve the best qualifications to progress on to university or work.
A typical student will choose three A-Levels or one Diploma and one A-Level from the choices available at The Bedford Sixth Form.
DIPLOMA COURSES
Diplomas are equivalent to A-Levels but are assessed via a combination of coursework and exams. Diplomas enable you to progress on to university, higher apprenticeships or employment. It is possible to earn 168 UCAS points from our Cambridge Technical Extended Diplomas and 106 from our BTEC National Diploma. Diplomas enable you to progress on to university, higher apprenticeships or into employment the same as our A-Level programmes do.
Our Diploma courses count as two of your options and are equivalent to A-Levels. Our Business, Sport and Health & Social Care diplomas are all equivalent to three A-Levels and our Science diploma course is equivalent to two A-Levels. These courses involve a mixture of exams and courseworkbased assessment.
Typically you study here for two years.
Typically you will complete three A-Level subjects or a Diploma plus one A-Level over the two years. A very small number of students may wish to complete four A-Level subjects. Whether you can start with three or four A-Levels will depend on your GCSE results, as explained below.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
All students must meet the minimum entry requirements, which are:
• At least five GCSEs at grade 4 or above (one Vocational or Technical qualification at Merit or above may be counted), two of which must be GCSE English Language and maths grade 4.
• At least grade 4 (or Merit for Vocational or Technical qualifications) in any subject(s) that you have taken at GCSE and wish to continue studying at A-Level.
Some subjects have special entry requirements which you need to meet in addition to the above. For the most up-todate information on subject specific requirements, please visit: www.bedfordsixthform.ac.uk

The Ancient History A-Level provides you with an opportunity to study four elements of ancient Greek and Roman history, and the interplay of military, political, religious, social and cultural factors within the time frames covered. The Greek period studies will focus on the relations between Greek and non-Greek states between 492-404 BCE, and the Roman focus will look at the Julio-Claudian Emperors between 31 BCE and 68 CE. There is also a depth study in each area of either ancient Sparta, Athens or Macedon, alongside a Roman study of either the Late Republic, the Flavians, or Roman Britain.
NEXT STEPS
An A-Level in Ancient History would complement your applications to university courses such as History, Classics, Archaeology, Politics, Philosophy, Religion, and many other subjects that rely on critical reflection, essay writing, research and interpretation.
This subject will provide you with a detailed understanding of: the physiology within the systems of the human body; and an introduction to biological molecules, energy processes, control mechanisms and genetics.
You will have the opportunity to carry out practical investigations, including genetic analysis techniques used in the industry.

SHOLA’S STORY
Subjects: Dance, Fine Art, Sociology, English Literature & Language
Previous School: St Thomas More Catholic Secondary School
“I started dancing when I was seven along with my twin sister Jasmine. We learned ballet, contemporary, street and tap and mostly do commercial dance. We’ve done quite a bit of commercial work together, including TV commercials for the Olympics and the 2018 Lidl Christmas advert, and, more recently, modelling for clothing lines.
Dance is still my main focus but it wasn’t something offered by my school at A-Level. Studying for an A-Level in Dance is helping me to develop both the practical and theory sides and I’m really enjoying it. When I finish Sixth Form I hope to go on to a dance school, such as Urdang Academy, Stella Mann or Bird College of Dance & Musical Theatre. My tutor Gen is a great support and will help me choreograph a suitable audition piece.
I really enjoy the ‘practitioner copies’ we do in lessons where we have to recreate a particular style. I chose a Bob Fosse style from Broadway and made it into a solo. We have a showcase coming up at the end of the year, which is mostly contemporary style, but we can choose to bring in other styles if we wish.
We study dance theory once a week and have lots of resources available to us. I’m learning so much from other people and have learnt the technical terms of dance, so that I can say what I mean without having to demonstrate it!”
“My Personal Achievement Tutor is really helpful and will always reply within a day if I need to see her. We also have great communal facilities and the Learning Resources Centre (LRC) is very good.”

CONNOR’S STORY
Subjects: Applied Science and Psychology
Previous School: Bedford Free School
“The Bedford Sixth Form is so different to school; we are treated as adults and have more independence to develop. There are no strict rules on how we dress or the colour of our hair which gives us the chance to express ourselves freely.
I love studying Applied Science because it focuses more on coursework than written exams; as well as having units that I find interesting. I chose to study these subjects as they relate closely to what I would like to study at university.
The Bedford Sixth Form has developed my independent learning skills as well as teaching me how to properly reference and structure reports which in turn will be transferable for when I progress on to university.”

DEE’ANNA’S STORY
Subjects: Business, Law and Politics
Previous School: Samuel Whitbread Academy
“I chose to study at The Bedford Sixth Form as it was one of the few places offering both Law and Politics. The Sixth Form has a very relaxed and friendly vibe that you do not get in school. There is no strict dress code and the relationship with teachers is more informal. The teachers keep the lessons fun and interactive, and give opportunities for group work.
I chose to study both Law and Politics because I have always been interested in the criminal justice system. I want to go and study a Bachelor of Law with Politics at university; and studying these subjects is going to help me achieve this. I love the depth we go into in our Law lessons, often having debates where we all share our views.
“My A-Levels have helped me to prepare for university life; through the in depth knowledge I have gained and the confidence I have developed.”
The Bedford Sixth Form has been a bridge between school and university by preparing me for a more independent style of learning.”

“I chose to come to The Bedford Sixth Form after hearing from others about the independent learning style as well as the freedom to work in your own time and your own way. There are spaces where I am able to get on with my own work and others to socialise. Everyone gets along with each other and it feels like a community with everyone contributing something different.
I chose to study Fine Art as that is what I spend most of my time doing. The Art department was a massive appeal when choosing where to study. There is a wide range of resources and a large space which has been something I have utilised. The studio spaces have also made a massive difference to my work.
“All of my tutors are very supportive, knowledgeable, and professional. The teachers here are far more approachable than other schools and I feel as though my opinion always matters.”
Having the expertise of my tutors has allowed me to develop a well-rounded portfolio as well as improve my interviewing skills. I have become more confident in my own work and ability. I have received an offer from London Art School and I plan to study there next year.”

“The Bedford Sixth Form is so sociable and everyone gets along well. You can have conversations with teachers so much easier than you could at school and you have more responsibility. I am given more freedom and the chance to develop as a person. I love business because of the strong relations it has with the world today; you not only learn about business as a whole but also about the current environment.
“All of my tutors are so passionate about the subjects they teach which make the subjects more enjoyable; and they are more than happy to offer extra help if I need it.”
My favourite part about studying at The Bedford Sixth Form is socialising with my friends. I love spending time in the art room, simply due to the atmosphere and being with people who have the same passion I have.
At first, I didn’t really know what I wanted to do after leaving middle school. I didn’t understand the range of choices and paths available to me after A-Levels. By taking the subjects I have chosen, I have developed a strong passion for illustration, and would love to pursue this as a career working within the fashion and music industry.

“After finishing school I was ready to study some new subjects. The Bedford Sixth Form appealed to me because of the variety of subjects on offer and I chose Sociology, Economics and Politics.
I’m really enjoying the Sociology course, particularly the work on education where we look at differences such as gender, ethnicity and class. I also enjoy studying crime. In a recent unit on corporate crime we were all given an area to focus on and my group chose to look at the Grenfell Tower incident.
Sociology is a good subject to choose because you are always looking at things from different viewpoints and in different ways.
“The teachers are very supportive and they help with exam practice questions to prepare you in plenty of time. I use the Learning Resources Centre a lot because it offers a good space with plenty of computers.”
All in all, you can be much more independent at Sixth Form than you can be at school. I’m looking forward to going to university after the Sixth Form to study Law. After leaving the Sixth Form, I am going to university to study fashion promotion. “I came to visit The Bedford Sixth Form at an Open Day and I loved the relaxed atmosphere created by both the people and the environment. I liked how the Sixth Form is located in the town centre so I can go out and have a break when I don’t have lessons.
“I’ve really enjoyed the enhancement programmes and making new friends who share similar interests. There is an accepting and non-judgemental attitude at The Bedford Sixth Form; I feel as though I can relax and be free to express myself.”
I want to study medicine after leaving the Sixth Form, which is why I chose these subjects. In Biology, it has been fascinating to learn how life keeps itself going using mechanisms, which at their core are very simple, but added together, make complex organisms and ecosystems. My teachers are very good at keeping the classes interesting and I’ve been treated like an adult which makes learning more enjoyable.
Whilst studying at the Sixth Form, I took on the role of a student rep. It was very enjoyable to find out what people wanted to change, brainstorm with the other student reps, and talk to the right people to get things done. I was also part of a Citizen Science Programme where we helped annotate the genome of a human parasite for medical research. This was a fantastic opportunity for me to put my knowledge into practice whilst working with others who share my interests.”

At The Bedford Sixth Form we realise that parents, guardians and carers play a very important part in our students’ success.
You’re there to help guide them in the decisions they make and support them throughout their studies. To help with this process, we’ve answered some of the top questions asked by parents. If you would like to find out more, we have a separate Parents’ Guide that you can download from: www.bedfordsixthform.ac.uk
WHAT HAPPEN WHEN MY CHILD COMPLETE A-LEVELS?
We will help all the students to get a place whatever university course they want to go. Please see page 11 to get an idea where our alumni students are studying.
HOW WILL YOU SUPPORT MY CHILD IN THEIR APPLICATION TO UNIVERSITY?
We offer full support with UCAS applications and, as always, our support teams are available to assist with any concerns or problems students may encounter in moving on to higher education. We also make sure there are plenty of opportunities for students to enhance the personal statement section of their UCAS application, for example, through clubs and extracurricular activities.
If your child has decided that they do not want to attend university, we will support them in achieving their chosen pathway. We will also give impartial guidance if they are also unsure on what to do next. At The Bedford Sixth Form your child will have a dedicated tutor that can support them individually with guidance and queries.
WILL MY CHILD HAVE TO PAY ANY COSTS FOR STUDYING AT THE BEDFORD SIXTH FORM?
If they are aged 16-18 as of 31 August 2023, our courses are free for them to study. They will be required to buy course related textbooks and, for a few courses, clothing, specialist equipment and they will need to pay towards trips and visits. If your child is facing a financial hardship, we offer financial support to help with the costs of study. See page 54 for details.
HOW WILL YOU KEEP MY CHILD SAFE?
We take the wellbeing and safety of every single student very seriously. We strive to ensure a safe and welcoming environment at The Bedford Sixth Form and have safeguarding and anti-bullying policies in place. Access to The Bedford Sixth Form site is by ID Card only and our teams regularly check everyone is wearing their ID badges.

WHO CAN MY CHILD TURN TO WHEN THEY NEED HELP WITH THEIR STUDIES?
All students benefit from their own Personal Achievement Tutor for ongoing one-to-one support. For help with subject related questions and queries, their subject teachers will always be on hand to help, making sure your child gets the help they need to perform at their very best.
HOW CAN I KEEP UP TO DATE WITH MY CHILDS PROGRESS?
We feel students perform better when their parents take an active role in their education, so the Sixth Form holds parents’ consultation evenings and issues written student progress reports. You can also see your child’s progress in individual subjects by asking to see their information on ProPortal, our system for recording grades and other information.
