TO THE BEDFORD COLLEGE GROUP The Bedford College Group was formed in August 2017, following the merger of Bedford College and Tresham College. As a result, we are now proud to be able to provide a wider range of undergraduate courses, giving our students more choice, opportunities and experiences across Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire. We offer courses based at Bedford College, Shuttleworth College in Biggleswade and Tresham College’s Corby, Kettering and Wellingborough campuses. We also have strong partnerships with the University of Bedfordshire and the University of Northampton, which allow our students the opportunity to complete full honours degrees in many of our subjects. BSc and BA ‘top-ups’ (Top-up from HND or Foundation Degree) WHAT ARE THEY?

This course is designed to prepare students wishing to enter higher education within the field of art and design. It’s a widely recognised pathway that aims to give you further knowledge of a range of disciplines so that you can choose where to specialise. The course is often required by many colleges and universities for entry on to art and design-related higher education courses.

These higher education qualifications focus on industry skills and are valued by employers as an alternative to university. HNCs and HNDs are mainly assessed through assignments, projects and practical tasks that you complete throughout the course – not usually through exams. They’re designed to lead straight to a career in industry or on to further study at university.

Run in partnership with the University of Northampton or University of Bedfordshire, these courses enable those who have graduated with a HND or Foundation Degree in some subject areas to top-up and achieve a degree qualification without the need to take a full three or four year degree programme. These courses often involve study both at College and at a partner university.

Access to Higher Education courses WHAT ARE THEY?

These courses are designed to provide a route to higher education if you don’t have the right qualifications or experience to start a degree. Access courses aim to introduce you to a subject area, develop your study skills and build your confidence and ability with higher education study. Access courses are recognised by universities across the UK and allow entry on to higher education programmes at Bedford College and beyond.

HOW LONG DO THEY TAKE?

Our Access to Higher Education courses take one year to complete. Find out more on pages 8 and 9.

HNCs take between one and two years to complete depending on the study route you choose, and are generally equivalent to the first year of a full honours degree at university. You can continue your studies at Bedford College by moving on to the HND qualification after your HNC. HNDs represent the next level of study up from HNCs, taking an additional one to two years to complete depending on the study route you choose. They are generally equivalent to the second year of university and you can ‘top-up’ your HND with a further one or two years of study at university to convert it to a full honours degree. Alternatively a HND is a standalone, recognised qualification that prepares you to progress directly into employment.

Foundation Degrees (FdA/FdSc)

WHAT ARE THEY?

Foundation Degrees are higher education qualifications that have been developed with employers to advance your skills in a specific industry sector. They are assessed through project work, reports, exams, practical work and presentations.

HOW LONG DO THEY TAKE?

A Foundation Degree takes two to four years to complete depending on the study route you choose. It is equivalent to the first two years of a full honours degree and, just like HNDs, you will have the option to ‘top-up’ your Foundation Degree and convert it into a full honours degree through an additional year of study at university.

Teaching qualifications WHAT ARE THEY?

We offer Certificate of Education (Cert Ed) and Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) qualifications that are designed to build your teaching skills if you’re looking to begin or develop your career within post-compulsory education. We also offer University Certificates in Continuing Professional Development (CPD) across a range of teaching skill areas which may be taken as building blocks towards a full Bachelor’s degree qualification.

HOW LONG DO THEY TAKE?

Our Cert Ed and PGCE courses take one to two years to complete depending on the study route you choose. Each of our CPD University Certificates is offered on a part-time basis via classroom learning, distance learning or through a combination of both, and take one year to complete. ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION WANT TO STUDY AT DEGREE LEVEL BUT DON’T HAVE THE GRADES YOU NEED? Access to Higher Education courses are a great way to gain the qualifications that you need to study at degree level. Our flexible study options mean that you can balance your study with your work and family commitments. Loans to help pay for your Access course If you are aged 19-23 and studying your first full Level 3 qualification, your course will be free for you to study. If you are aged 19-23 and already hold a Level 3 qualification, such as A-Levels or a BTEC Diploma, or if you are aged 24 or over, you can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan to cover your tuition fees. If you then go on to complete a higher education qualification after your Access course, any remaining balance from your Advanced Learner Loan will be written off when you graduate.

These courses provide a recognised route into higher education if you don’t have the necessary qualifications or experience to start a course. Access courses aim to build the skills, knowledge and confidence you need to progress on to higher education in the subject area you’re interested in.

Our experienced staff have been teaching Access and developing the programme over a number of years. We offer a strong pastoral support system to ensure that your return to education is made as smooth as possible through an allocated personal tutor. You will also be taught by subject specialist staff with industry experience.

We offer Access courses at Bedford College, Shuttleworth College and Tresham College’s Corby, Kettering and Wellingborough campuses. Visit our websites for more information on where you can study your chosen pathway. At Bedford College and Tresham College we also offer the Level 2 Preparation for Access course. This one year course is designed for those who do not yet have the entry criteria for the Level 3 Access course. It is suited to adults who have been out of education for some time and who need to re-learn how to study at a higher level before progressing onto the intensive Access programme.

Areas of study Depending on your chosen specialist subject, you will study subject specific units plus the following core units: essay writing and communication skills; mathematics; research skills and study skills. You will also undertake an independent research project and tutorial. These units are the core subjects of study for all pathways.

Future options On successful completion you can progress on to a degree-level course or further qualifications in your chosen specialist area.

University links We have close links with local universities including the University of Bedfordshire and the University of Northampton. We liaise with them directly about the entry criteria for applicants and the interview process.

Entry requirements Access courses are aimed at mature students (19+) who do not have the standard qualifications to enter higher education. GCSE English and maths are desirable; however, we may consider candidates without these qualifications, depending on an English and maths entry test, where you will need to demonstrate English and maths skills at Level 2, in addition to interviewing successfully. Most universities require GCSE English and maths you will need to research the entry criteria to your chosen universities. You may be able to study either GCSE English or maths as an extra qualification.

JESSICA’S STORY ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION: HEALTH PROFESSIONS I’d been out of education for nine years before starting this course at Tresham College. I currently work in administration but I want to get into mental health nursing, so this is the first step towards getting the qualifications I need. Once I have the Access qualification I am planning to go to the University of Northampton to study Mental Health Nursing. I’ve really enjoyed the psychology side of the course because it is the most relevant aspect for me and my career plans, and I enjoy learning about the brain. My tutors have been very supportive. Getting back into education was a bit of a shock at first, but it’s surprising how quickly everything comes back to you.

The Access course is perfect for a mature student working full-time because there is the flexibility to study in your own time and fit the work around you.

Course overview This course will provide you with high-quality, advanced skills and knowledge in sustainable crop production, livestock and land management. You will gain practical skills on our College farm combined with advanced scientific, technical and business enterprise skills which are key components of the course. You will also have the opportunity to gain valuable industry experience through work related activity.

Areas of study Units you can study on the course will include: business development in agriculture and land management; scientific methods for agricultural management; sustainable crop production; livestock husbandry, health and welfare; sustainable land management; business enterprise in the agricultural sector; agricultural science and biotechnology; investigating sustainable agriculture.

Staff experience Our staff have a wide range of qualifications and expertise gained in a variety of agriculture related settings and are therefore able to blend theoretical principles with their practical knowledge to embed your understanding of this subject.

Industry links We organise regular trips to a range of arable and livestock facilities, food production organisations and diverse business enterprises, as well as study tours in the UK and Europe to investigate wider agricultural practice. You will have the opportunity to take additional industry recognised qualifications in first aid, the safe use of pesticides and forklift handling, although additional registration fees may apply for these.

Further study/career prospects Progression for successful learners will lead to study at the University of Bedfordshire for a final year to gain a Bachelor of Science Degree. The qualification will provide learners with access into employment in the industry or further progression to other Higher Education institutes.

Course overview This is a one year full-time route to an Agriculture Honours Degree. It is aimed at those who already possess a Foundation Degree, HND or equivalent in Agriculture or a related area. This course is taught by the University of Bedfordshire, but some of your study will take place at Shuttleworth College. The course offers a scientific approach to the management of agricultural land and livestock with a strong focus on how we can help establish global food security. It fosters the use of scientific inquiry and research principles to solve problems faced in a vocational context. Practical use of farm and laboratory resources will be integral to the delivery of learning, with study trips to external agents providing enhanced learning opportunities.

Areas of study During this course you will have the option to study a range of units such as: agricultural science research project, environment and climate change, animal physiology and disease and food security.

Staff experience Our staff hold a wide range of qualifications including post-graduate and doctorate level expertise. Staff continually keep up to date and engaged in the Agriculture, Scientific and Business sectors to ensure that theoretical principles can be applied to their practical applications.

Industry links We have established links with agricultural and research enterprises, national and international companies and specialists who provide a wide range of opportunities for our students. Regular visits by industry experts, industry placements and trips are essential parts of this qualification.

Further options The course can lead to careers in arable management, crop and livestock research, land management and conservation and scientific research into animal health and nutrition. Graduates can progress onto further post-graduate education for example a Master of Science Degree. Shuttleworth College has excellent contacts with employers and associations in the Agriculture and food production industry.

ED’S STORY

AGRICULTURE FOUNDATION DEGREE (FdSc) Ed grew up in the countryside where he often spent time helping with various jobs from field maintenance to horses. “Farming is a way of life for many,” said Ed. “And through education we can make basic changes to aid improvements.” On completing the Advanced Level Agriculture study programme here at Shuttleworth, Ed did his research and realised that, to pursue a high level job in the industry, he would need to be educated to degree level, as well as have plenty of work experience behind him. He enrolled on to the Foundation Degree in its inaugural year. “There is a lot more science involved in the degree-level course, both theory and practical,” explained Ed. “For instance, when we work on the farm we carry out blood tests on the livestock and the theory really pieces together everything we learn on the practicals.” Ed has had work experience on the College farm. Working as a Farm Manager Assistant he has experienced all aspects from sales, to which crops to plant, to record keeping. “I’ve also had the opportunity to complete additional qualifications during my time here including a JCB course and a spray course.”

The facilities are very good at Shuttleworth. As a higher education student we now have access to the HE centre, which is a private space for degree-level students to work, meet and relax. After completing the Foundation Degree Ed is aiming to top up his qualification to a full degree and then move into a managerial role with an agricultural company, or possibly work as an agronomist in developing countries, helping them to boost the farmland they have.

Course overview This is a one-year full-time route to an Animal Science Honours Degree. It is aimed at those who already possess a Foundation Degree, HND or equivalent in Animal Management or a related area. This course is taught by the University of Bedfordshire, but some of your study will take place at Shuttleworth College. The course offers a scientific approach to the management of animals. It fosters the use of scientific inquiry and business principles to solve problems faced in a vocational context. Practical use of animal and laboratory resources will be integral to the delivery of learning, with study trips to external agents providing enhanced learning opportunities.

Areas of study During this course you will have the option to study a range of units such as: managing animal collections; scientific theory of animals; interaction of animals and environment; animal physiology and disease; environment and climate change; research project.

Staff expertise Staff have experience and knowledge in the management of animal collections and a range of biological and animal sciences, such as animal ecology and physiology. Project supervisors are experienced in leading students through the process of conducting independent research.

Future options The course can lead to careers in animal care, conservation and scientific research into animal health and nutrition. Assessment methods The course uses a range of assessment types, such as critical essays, laboratory reports, consultancy-style reports and closedbook exams. The research project will enable you to undertake a piece of independent research, supervised by a member of staff. This will allow you to engage deeply with your chosen topic area and will equip you with skills for investigating an animalrelated research question, independently gathering and analysing data and communicating the findings effectively with a range of audiences. Past student projects have been undertaken in areas such as the importance of enrichment for captive animals, the effects of environmental microplastics on aquatic animals, factors affecting re-homing of domestic cats and the use of urban ecosystems by wild birds.

SCOTT’S STORY ANIMAL MANAGEMENT FOUNDATION DEGREE (FdSc) I have progressed from Level 1, all the way up through the levels to degree-level study here in the Animal Unit at Shuttleworth College. I chose to stay here for higher education because I wanted to keep furthering my education. I love it here; I know all the people, all the animals and coming here was the best thing I have ever done. It was a big jump to go from Level 3 to a Foundation Degree, but it’s been worth it. The tutors have always been there to help and outside of lessons you can email them at any time and they will help you. Over the years I have particularly enjoyed working with the macaws, meerkats and reptiles. I’ve also just enjoyed a work experience placement at The Cat Survival Trust in Welwyn. It was good to put all of my skills into practice, but working with big cats was one species that was completely new to me! The units we have studied on both Ecology and Scientific Methods have opened up new career ideas for me, and I am interested in getting into animal rescue or behaviour, once I have topped up to the full BSc degree here at Shuttleworth. I’ve always loved film as well, so a wildlife cameraman would be a dream job; maybe I could be the next David Attenborough!

The new Animal Unit that is being built at the College will be really good for the new students coming in. I am gutted I will just miss out on it, but I will come back and visit!

JACK’S STORY 3D DESIGN HND I’ve always loved Art & Design. I studied Art at GCSE and A-Level at school, and then came to Bedford College to study the Art & Design Foundation Diploma (Pre-Degree). This gave me a great insight into studying Art & Design at a higher level. I wasn’t sure whether I wanted to specialise in Graphics or 3D Design, and the Foundation Diploma enabled me to try out both. After choosing 3D Design for my final project, my mind had been made up and I progressed on to the HNC followed by the HND. When I first started out on the course, I enjoyed making the products more than the initial conception, but now it’s the other way round. I love looking at trends and then designing my own products in CAD – I have always enjoyed drawing and sketching ideas. My favourite projects have been a lamp made from jesmonite and a space saving desk.

We get great support from our tutors, and, to be honest, they have been our saviours at times! It’s a really hands on course with plenty of materials available to you. Last year I managed to secure myself a two day per week internship with Koti Studio near St Neots, which has been great, and I am now applying for full-time jobs in product or furniture design. For me, it’s definitely been a better option than university. My sister studied the Graphic Design HND here and went straight into a full-time job at the end of it; I’m hoping to do exactly that.

This highly creative ‘multi-award winning’ Fashion and Textiles HNC course will equip you with the starting blocks for a successful career within the exciting and past-paced fashion or textile industry. You will develop a broad range of practical and technical skills in areas such as pattern cutting, draping and production as well as creative skills in research for fashion, fashion design, illustration, technical drawings, computer aided design, fashion trends and forecasting. In addition to fashion specific skills, you will explore textile techniques and processes such as digital and screen printing, heat transfer printing and laser cutting. You will have the opportunity to develop your own industry network through internships and national and international competitions. Each year, students have the opportunity to enter live competitions and many of our students have been shortlisted and won prestigious awards. Project 20/20 and beyond was part of the Professional Clothing Awards “Industry Recognised Category” for 2017, that looked at recognising emerging talents and design innovation in our industry from fashion students of leading fashion and textiles universities around the country. Hundreds of entries were submitted nationally and Bedford College students took 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize with Bedford College taking the prize for overall winning university.

MATTHEW’S STORY GRAPHIC DESIGN HND I am already a freelance Graphic Designer but was looking for an affordable pathway to attaining the BA (Hons) qualification because I believe it’s a lot easier to get work if you have a degree. My girlfriend recommended the College to me and I decided to enrol because it was a lot cheaper than going to university. Aside from getting me the qualifications I need, the course is also a great opportunity to build up a portfolio. I’m enjoying learning about different areas of design; my work to date has been mostly in publication design, whereas here I have learnt much more including logo and packaging design. I have found it hard to analyse my own work and be taught how to do something differently when you think what you do is right, but my tutors are really good and help me get to grips with new ideas and techniques.

I would definitely recommend the College as a good stepping stone to getting where you want to be in your career.

SHANNEN’S STORY PHOTOGRAPHY HNC I have had an interest in photography for a long time and studied a Level 3 photography course at Tresham College before enrolling onto the HNC. I knew that I wanted to work towards a Photography Degree but I didn’t feel quite ready to move away to study, so the option to continue my education at Tresham College was ideal for me. I intend to continue at Tresham College to gain the HND qualification and then possibly complete a topup year at university to achieve the full degree.

This course has really challenged my thinking about photography and has certainly improved my technical ability. I have been able to increase my understanding of dark room processes, gain more experience of studio work and explore concepts such as minimalism. I have also had the opportunity to work with graphic design and fashion students on a Vogue themed magazine project, which was great for gaining experience of collaborative work.

ANNE’S STORY BUSINESS HNC/HND I work full-time as a Customer Services Manager for Viapath; a public-private joint venture providing a range of pathology services for clinical customers, including Bedford Hospital where I am based. After discussing progression opportunities with my manager, they sponsored me to do the Business HNC/HND at Bedford College. The knowledge I am gaining through this qualification will likely open up new opportunities within our Corporate Services team in London where, ultimately, I see my career progressing. I have previously studied an NVQ in Customer Service at Bedford College and found it a very positive and rewarding experience. While there is no denying that the HND course is a step up and a real challenge alongside working full-time and looking after my family, the tutors are really helpful and are always there to address any issues or concerns. The course involves two evenings a week in College and my employer allows me time to complete assignments if I need it. I’ve particularly enjoyed the unit on HR Development and it’s really opened my eyes to the problems businesses face and the solutions they use to address them. As part of my course we have also visited the Magistrates Court in Milton Keynes.

I would certainly recommend the course to others. The philosophy and spirit of the Bedford College team is very good – they care about each of their students and want to see them achieve their best.

BETH’S STORY EARLY YEARS STUDIES FOUNDATION DEGREE (FDA) I currently work as a Teaching Assistant in a primary school and this has really confirmed that I would like to train to become a fully qualified teacher in primary education. I was aware of the high standard of early years education at Tresham College, having previously completed a Level 3 qualification at the College. The Foundation Degree is an ideal route for me as it focuses on the practical skills that I am getting in my workplace and only requires attendance for taught sessions one evening per week.

Balancing the course alongside a full time job does take strong commitment to get the work done, but the tutors are aware of these demands and are very supportive. The taught sessions allow the group to take part in discussions and learn from each other’s practice. They also often involve guest speakers from a wide range of professions such as Play Therapists, Teachers and Managers of early years settings. Once I have completed this course, I plan to do a top-up year to gain a full honours degree and then go onto a PGCE to train to become a teacher.

CHRIS’S STORY ENGINEERING BSc TOP-UP I am an Environmental Test apprentice at Lockheed Martin, a global defence and aerospace company, and I am studying for a BSc in Engineering with Bedford College and the University of Northampton. Alongside my role, I help to look after 20 junior apprentices, which is where my journey with Bedford College also started. I began as a Maintenance apprentice with Lockheed Martin in 2012, studying the Level 3 Mechanical Engineering apprenticeship programme at the College. I have always enjoyed taking things apart and putting them back together, so engineering was an obvious choice for me after school. I then studied a year of Electrical Engineering at Level 3, in order to give me dual skills and progressed from there on to the HNC/HND in Electrical Engineering.

My journey with the College and my employer has allowed me to access different opportunities, while all the time learning as much as I can and gaining more qualifications. I wanted to stay at the College because I had got to know the tutors; they are so knowledgeable and have always been really invested in their students. The BSc is a great challenge and the programming aspect has allowed me to develop new skills that I can put to use in my career. There are different learning styles at the College and the University, with more oneto-one learning at College but more focus on self-learning at Northampton. I’d definitely recommend the College to others – it’s a great place to learn and will drive you to achieve all that you can.

Undergraduate Prospectus 2019-20

This course is designed to prepare you as a professional for a life in the varied modern music industry – where you will be required to turn your hand to many music and sound related jobs. You will follow a specialist work-related programme of study that covers and develops the key knowledge, understanding and practical skills you need to operate professionally within the music industry. You will hold performances in a range of external locations: previous gigs have included a performance for charity at The Yards in Kettering Town Centre and headlining at the Wicksteed Park bonfire night celebrations to a crowd in excess of 14,000 people. Students will also have the opportunity to take part in an optional trip abroad.

Areas of study You will study a range of units, including; performance (group and solo), composition, critical listening appreciation and a research dissertation. During the HNC you will plan and deliver performances, compose for film & TV, deliver audio production projects, get involved in critical music appreciation and dissertation research skills. For the HND you will take a specialist route, choosing from session musician, music production, sound engineering, composition, sound design, music business or artist management. Here you will develop your own projects and receive guidance from the lecturers to develop your knowledge.

This exciting course has been carefully tailored to prepare you for work in the professional industry. You will explore a wide range of alternative approaches to acting, as well as the naturalistic and classical acting styles, to develop as a well-rounded performer, building a portfolio of experience vital for auditions. At the end of this course you will leave with professional head shots, a voice over show reel, an actor’s show reel, an actor’s CV and knowledge of how to acquire an agent. Throughout the course there are lots of opportunities to see live performances and to work with industry professionals on projects, gaining experience and employment connections.

Areas of study

You will develop your acting skills through various styles, working in our state-of-the-art TV studio and vocal recording studios and exploring practitioners such as: Alexander, Feldenkrais, Linklater, Fitzmaurice, Uta Hagen, Grotowski, Katie Mitchell and Frantic Assembly. Our modular structure allows you to tailor the course to suit your career aspirations by combining musical theatre, dance, singing and acting for camera units alongside the core programme. Working as a company you will prepare for public performances, both in the classic theatre setting but also in site-specific locations, including the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

TONI’S STORY PERFORMING ARTS HNC After completing my A-Levels I took a break from education for a couple of years. I got some really valuable work experience with a children’s theatre group and that gave me the direction to pursue a higher qualification in acting. It has been difficult adapting to the demands of degree level study, but the tutors have been very supportive and the small group size means that we get a lot of one-to-one guidance. There is also a lot of emphasis on peer learning, so I have been able to benefit from the wider knowledge of the group during skills workshops.

The course has been a great confidence builder and is certainly improving me as a performer. The large performance hall is a great place to work in and I have enjoyed the challenges that each show brings. The course also focuses on the realities of working in the performance industry; each of the tutors has industry experience that they bring to their teaching and we have received great advice from a number of speakers, including a representative of Equity and a current actor who has appeared in national theatre productions of ‘Wicked’.

Course overview This course will prepare you for a career as a make-up artist in television, film, theatre, prosthetics, advertising and fashion. You will gain experience of a broad range of techniques, craft skills and in-depth analysis valuable to future employers. The course will allow you to research and realise characters through hair and wig setting, postiche, costume, prop design, prosthetics and designing effects make-up. You will also create convincing and realistic special effects, learn anatomy and physiology and practice drawing from life to identify the body’s reaction, and the visual impact.

Areas of study The course will cover the following compulsory units; anatomy and its visual representation, period and editorial make-up and hair, professional practice, researching and creating a character, fantasy character design creation, foundation degree show, professional development and freelancing in the make-up industry, research and applications of high fashion make-up.

ASHLEY’S STORY MUSIC PRODUCTION FOUNDATION DEGREE (FdA) I had previously completed a Level 3 Music course at Bedford College, but decided to take a break from education after this and spent two years in employment. I was keen to return to the College to take the next step in my education; it is local to where I live so the course allows me to save money by living at home for two years before deciding if I would like to travel further to complete my final topup year at another university.

The smaller class size means I can get a lot of 1 to 1 time with the tutors, which really helps if I need any extra guidance. The course is very hands on and I am able to learn more by actually doing the activities rather than just relying on the theory. The facilities are great, all of the recording studios have top quality equipment and are full of everything we need. After this course I am considering doing a final top up year to gain the full degree and then maybe even a masters degree. Eventually I want to start up my own music production business. I would recommend the course to people who not sure about the specific area of music that they want to go into, as it is a very diverse subject, and gives you an insight into several areas.

LARA’S STORY SPORT (OUTDOOR ADVENTURE) HNC After I finished my A-Levels I worked in a primary school as a Playleader. I’ve always been involved in outdoor activities and had a lot of friends who had done the Level 3 at Shuttleworth, so I decided to come here and progress on to higher education.

I’m really enjoying the course. It’s been great getting back into learning and the general atmosphere of the class is really nice. The tutors are the best I’ve ever had; they’re very down to earth and try to adjust the course to our needs. I’ve been hired as a Team Leader at PGL in the Isle of Wight over the summer. This will involve instructing activities and the day-to-day management of visiting groups. When I finish the course I would like to start off as an Activity Instructor and then hopefully get a permanent role as a Centre Manager. As part of the courses we have had experiences in the outdoor industry to help contextualise the theory content we have been taught at College. This has included planning and undertaking a four day canoe expedition on the Great Glen Caledonian Canal in Scotland, residential at Rockley Watersports Centre in Poole and an industry talk at the Olympic Park from the Managing Director of the Aquatic Centre and Copperbox Arena. It was definitely a good decision to get back into studying and the College has opened up lots of doors in the industry.

DEAN’S STORY SPORT I first studied at Tresham College on the Level 3 Uniformed Public Services programme. From there I served in the Army before deciding I wanted a new and different career. I’m aiming to go to Loughborough, Portsmouth or Birmingham and then progress on to a graduate scheme or into an entry level position. I’d like to get into management and all of the jobs I’m looking to apply for require a degree.

Before starting the course I’d been out of education for five years but the tutors made it easy for me to make the transition back into college life. I’ve already learnt lots of transferable skills such as Microsoft Office and presentation skills. For example in our Research Methods module we’ve had to carry out an experiment, analyse the data and put the findings into a journal article.

This course is suitable for those with a degree qualification, or those with a Level 3 qualification within a specific subject. If you do not have at least Level 2 English and maths (GCSEs grades A*-C) qualifications you will be required to achieve these within the year. You must be willing to undergo Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) clearance. Some appropriate teaching-related experience and a successful interview will also be required. This course runs as both a full-time pre-service one year course, or a two year part-time, in-service course. NAOMI’S STORY PGCE GRADUATE I have always been interested in a career in teaching; my parents and brother are all teachers, so to follow in their footsteps was a natural decision. After graduating from the University of Leicester, where I gained a Degree in English and Film Studies, I joined Tresham College as GCSE English and Functional Skills lecturer, where I was able to work towards my PGCE qualification. Balancing the demands of the teaching role alongside studying towards the PGCE was challenging, but I was given lots of support from my colleagues and also my course tutor.

It was great to be able to learn different teaching techniques and to be able to put the theory into practice in the day to day role. My current role also involves teaching students who are studying the Pre-Access to Higher Education course; students on this course are often returning to education after a break. Originally, I thought I would be better suited to primary school teaching, so it surprised me how much I enjoy working with adult learners and this is something I may look at pursuing more in the future. After two years of studying, I completed the PGCE qualification in June 2017. Since then I have started working towards QTLS (Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills status), which will make me more employable in the further education sector.

Future options

You will consider how to plan and deliver inclusive learning and teaching, how to work with others to promote the inclusion of disabled learners, and learners with a Specific Educational Need or Disability (SEND) (e.g. Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, Dyspraxia, Autism, Asperger’s Syndrome). You will also investigate an area of disability and apply this learning to your own practice.

OLIVIA’S STORY TRAVEL & TOURISM HND I started on the full-time Travel & Tourism Level 2 study programme. My journey continued as I progressed on the Level 3 course; I was gaining lots of knowledge of the industry and was even nominated as Class Representative, which involved attending meetings with the College’s executive team on behalf of our course. I was not aware of the option to study at degree-level at College, but with the help and guidance from the tutors I soon learnt about the HNC course.

This course offered such a great variety of options that I decided to further my studies at Bedford College. It was a big step up to Higher Education but having progressed through the levels I had plenty of knowledge and understanding behind me, and the support from the tutors certainly helped me. I’ve really enjoyed the unit on Sustainable Tourism and looking at the social and economic factors that have an impact on tourism today. I also thoroughly enjoyed the Resort Management unit, which I have a strong interest in. I am going to top-up to a full degree at Brighton University next year where I will study International Tourism Management BA Hons. Upon completion of my degree I can then consider two options: to either continue at university and study for a Masters degree; or possibly train in Resort Management. I enjoy engaging with people and offering customer service, and feel this role would combine my passion for travel with my bubbly personality.

NICK’S STORY MAINTENANCE ENGINEERING LEVEL 4 APPRENTICESHIP AND HNC ENGINEERING After my A-Levels I didn’t feel it was the right time for me to go straight to university; I didn’t really know at that time what I wanted to do and I wouldn’t have been going for the right reasons.

Once I had decided that I would rather start working, doing an apprenticeship was the best option because I could start earning a wage and study at the same time. I joined Prosaw Ltd and worked through the Level 3 Apprenticeship programme. When I finished the Level 3, I sat down with my manager and assessor to look at my options and decided to continue onto the Level 4 higher apprenticeship, which also involved enrolling onto the day release HNC Engineering course at Tresham College. The demands of studying has been a challenge and I have had to work hard to keep on top of the workload, but it has been worth it. My job at Prosaw Ltd is to oversee the department which deals with refurbishing used machinery for the purpose of selling on. My employers have been very supportive and I would definitely recommend doing an apprenticeship to others, as long as you are prepared to put the hours in; the portfolio takes a lot of time to get right.

Brand new £3.65m zoological education centre in development Shuttleworth College is proud to be a national leader in animal sciences and land-based education. CONCESSIONS FOR ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION AND ART & DESIGN FOUNDATION DIPLOMA COURSES If you are aged 19-23 and studying your first full Level 3 qualification, your course will be free for you to study. If you are aged 19-23 and already hold a Level 3 qualification such as A-Levels or a BTEC Diploma, or are aged over 24 you can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan to cover your tuition fees (see details below). If you are receiving a loan for an Access course and go on to complete a higher education qualification, any remaining balance from your Advanced Learner Loan will be written off when you graduate.

UCAS applications: If you would like to study a full-time HNC, HND or Foundation Degree you will need to apply through the Universities & Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) online application process at www.ucas.com We can take applications received through the UCAS main scheme up to 30 June 2019 if there are still vacancies on your course – but we advise you to apply earlier. Direct applications: If you would like to study a part-time HNC, HND, Foundation Degree, a teaching qualification, Access course or the Art & Design BTEC Foundation Diploma then you will need to apply directly to the College. 4. Attend an interview

For some of our courses, after you apply you’ll need to attend an interview with one of our tutors who’ll be able to ensure that the course you’ve chosen is right for you, as well as answer any questions you may have. If you are applying for a Creative Arts and Media course, you may be asked to bring a portfolio of work to your interview. Performing Arts and Music courses may require an audition.

5. Confirmation You’ll then be notified of the outcome of your application either by the College (for direct applications) or through UCAS (for UCAS applications). The notification will explain to you what you need to do next if you have been offered a place on your course.

6. Come to a Welcome Day – September 2019 Our Welcome Days give you the chance to meet your tutors, make friends with students who’ve also applied for your course and find out a lot more about what you’ll be studying in the coming year so, by the time your course begins, you’ll know exactly what to expect.

RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING (RPL) As part of our initial advice and guidance, interview and enrolment procedures, we will take into account the experience and knowledge you have gained from outside the formal education and training system.
