A-LEVELS
FOUNDATION AND EXTENDED DIPLOMAS
A-Levels are academic, examination-based qualifications recognised as a traditional qualification to gain entry to universities and higher education. A-Levels focus mainly on academic subjects and qualify for UCAS points (maximum 140 points per A-Level.)
Foundation and Extended Diplomas are equivalent to A Levels but are assessed mainly via coursework rather than entirely by examination. Foundation and Extended Diplomas enable you to progress on to university, higher apprenticeships or employment. The Bedford Sixth Form currently offers Foundation Diplomas taught over one year that are equivalent to 1.5 A-Levels; or Extended Diplomas taught over two years that are equivalent to 3 A-Levels.
In light of the A-Level reforms that have been rolling out nationally for the past three years we are currently reviewing our A-Level curriculum for 2018/19, in particular the continued provision of external AS examinations at the end of Year 12.

YOUR CHOICES AT THE BEDFORD SIXTH FORM Typically you study here for two years: I n your first year you have the opportunity to take a combination of four A-Levels and/or Foundation Diplomas. I f you take A-Levels you will sit an AS examination at the end of your first year. This will help you to decide which subjects to continue with in your second year. T ypically you will continue with three subjects in your second year.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS New GCSE Grades The new GCSEs were awarded in August 2017 using a new grading system. The new GCSEs are graded 9–1, rather than A*–G, with grade 9 being the highest and set above the old A*. Grade 4 is equivalent to the old grade C. OLD GCSE Grading Structure

Our Art and Design studios are truly inspiring spaces. You will take part in a number of external events including gallery trips to The Tate Modern, National Portrait Gallery, V&A and the Barbican. There may also be an opportunity to visit a European city. In 2016 our students spent a few days in Barcelona, sketching and photographing the city’s incredible architecture. Extra-curricular life drawing classes may be available and you will have access to the latest printmaking facilities, Adobe products, scanners and photography equipment.
Did you know that the UK’s creative industries are worth more than £36 billion a year and employ 1.5 million people across the country?1 A wide range of degree courses can provide you with the perfect step up to a career in the arts, including fine art, architecture, interior design, graphic design, fashion and surface pattern design, painting and printing, as well as a number of combined courses. Your learning will come to life during visits to working businesses to see how things work in real life industries. We also invite local business people to give inspiring talks about their own individual journeys and area of expertise.
Studying Business and Economics opens up a wide range of further study and career options. You could go on to study a related subject at university, such as Business, Marketing or Finance, or use the analytical and problem-solving skills you will have acquired to study a different area.

RAJBIR'S STORY Studying: Economics, Maths and Further Maths Previous school: Bedford Free School Next destination: University of Warwick When I was looking at where to study for my A-Levels I visited a few places, but the teachers were so much more passionate about their subjects here at The Bedford Sixth Form. I also enjoy how the courses are taught here and the independent learning style gets you into gear and makes you work hard. When you do need help, the teachers are always on hand to encourage you. The Learning Resources Centre (LRC) offers very good working spaces. I know I wouldn’t have done as well as I did last year without having the LRC there to study in. I have always taken advantage of the enrichment activities on offer at lunchtimes, such as badminton and table tennis. I do believe you need a balance and it’s a great way to relax between lessons and studying.

I love statistics because it’s a part of maths you can use in the real world. Following my A-Level results I am going to the University of Warwick to study Statistics & Economics. AMBER'S STORY Studying: English Language & Literature, History and Sociology Previous school: Hastingsbury Business & Enterprise College Next destination: University of Leicester I’ve had some really good experiences during my time at The Bedford Sixth Form, which I wouldn’t have had at other sixth forms. It was a huge step but it was surprisingly easy to settle in and I’ve developed so much as a person. I hadn’t studied Sociology before starting here, but the course content really appealed to me when I was applying. I have found the Crime & Deviance unit particularly interesting; reading case studies and developing different perspectives. All of the teachers are fantastic and they are all different in the way they teach their subject. My Sociology teacher tells us anecdotes to link in with what we’re learning so it makes more sense.

I enjoy playing devil’s advocate and there are plenty of debates to be had in Sociology. I’ve also joined the Debating Society and we’ve competed against other local schools, as well as teams from as far afield as Oxford. Being here has really opened up my mind. I love the creative writing element in English and although it was the Nazi Germany paper that initially drew me to choose History, I enjoyed the Stuarts more and even found myself debating over Charles I! I am now going on to the University of Leicester to study Law & Criminology, which I feel combines everything I’ve learnt both here and at school. My ultimate aim is to become a barrister.

CASHAL'S STORY Studying: Maths, Physics and Chemistry Previous school: Bedford Free School Next destination: University of Hertfordshire I have always had a passion for science and when I came to visit The Bedford Sixth Form at an Open Day I really liked the traditional look of the labs, but with all the modern facilities and equipment you would expect. I also had the opportunity to meet the Physics teacher who I got on well with.

Physics is my main passion, particularly astrophysics; it’s the unknown end of it, the ability to push boundaries and discover new things. Of course, if you want to be a physicist you need Maths as well, and I also chose to study Chemistry as I thought it would complement the other subjects. All of my teachers are great, and you can go to any of them if you have a problem or need something explaining in more detail. You also have everything you need here – I’ve never looked around and thought, ‘I could do with that!’ It’s such a friendly place and you feel comfortable, which makes it all a hundred times easier! I love learning about space and am looking forward to going on to the University of Hertfordshire next year to study Aerospace Engineering. I want to be a rocket scientist and my ultimate goal is to work on a rocket that goes to Mars. It’s an area I’ve always been fascinated by.

CHLOE'S STORY Studying: Biology, Sociology and Textiles Previous school: Mark Rutherford Next destination: University of East Anglia There is no doubt I was outgrowing school when it came towards the end of my GCSEs. I was ready to meet new people and even though it was scary starting somewhere new at first, everyone was in the same boat.

Throughout my time here I always felt as though I could go and see my teachers about anything I wasn’t sure of, and my Personal Tutor was excellent at arranging both study support and extra support for exams.
"
Initially I tended to keep to myself, however volunteering as a Student Ambassador really helped me to come out of my shell. I took prospective students on tours around the building on Open Days and accompanied them to their subject taster sessions at the annual Welcome Day. It was nice to be able to answer their questions and share my own experiences. Throughout my time here I always felt as though I could go and see my teachers about anything I wasn’t sure of, and my Personal Tutor was excellent at arranging both study support and extra support for exams, due to a medical condition I have which causes migraines.
I love studying Biology. The teachers are really enthusiastic about the subject and I particularly enjoy human biology because it helps me to understand myself. Textiles, on the other hand, is very creative and helps to give me some breathing space. I’m looking forward to going to the University of East Anglia to study Biological Sciences, although my time at The Bedford Sixth Form has gone too quickly. I want to go back and do it all over again!

You will have a lot of opportunities to get out of the classroom, including attending conferences, listening to guest speakers and visiting museums and parliament. If you study Law, you will hear from the Crown Prosecution Service and lawyers who specialise in criminal defence. You will also have the opportunity to be involved in a mock trial and visit the Galleries of Justice in Nottingham, as well as the Old Bailey. We hold membership of the Historical Association, so, if you study History, you will have plenty of opportunities to attend talks given by visiting historians.

As a Maths student you will have plenty of opportunities to bring your learning to life and discuss various issues with experts in the subject. In the lead up to exams, we often hold revision sessions hosted by guest lecturers. This is great for focusing your learning and enabling you to look at things from a different point of view. You also get to visit the Open University for a special Maths lecture, adding breadth to the course content.
An A-Level in Mathematics is highly regarded by both universities and potential employers, as it shows an interest in logic, problem solving and looking at situations sometimes in an abstract way. Guest speakers are often invited to give valuable input across a range of courses, and various trips are organised to places of cultural interest. In 2017 the screenplay writer Mike Carey 'The Girl With All The Gifts' came in to talk to students. The students also entered a short film competition with the British Film Institute and visited the Institute’s library in London. Students also took part in an enrichment trip to New York City.
Successful completion of these courses will open up opportunities to study a number of university degree programmes, such as English, Sociology, Philosophy, Media and Humanities, as well as Film, Television or Media Studies. The Dance course will give you a wide appreciation of dance through practical and theoretical studies, with an emphasis on choreography and performance. Entry will be granted via interview and audition. A wide range of trips are planned throughout the year.
Dance and Drama can both be studied at university as a single discipline or as a part of a combined degree with a vast range of subjects. You could go on to develop a career as a professional dancer, West End performer, teacher, community dance artist, or arts manager. Did you know that 86% of actors have had professional training?1
If want to take Drama A-Level you should be keen on acting, directing or the more technical side of theatre and wish to develop your skills in some or all of these areas. If you enjoy the study of plays and the opportunity to be creative this is the course for you.

MARTHA'S STORY Studying: Art, French and Spanish Previous school: Bedford Girls School Next destination: Oxford Brookes By the time I had finished my GCSEs I knew I wanted a change; I just wasn’t in the right mindset to stay on at school. I’ve always had an interest in film and photography, and I come from a very creative family. My dad works in the film industry and my mum is a textile designer. Choosing to study Art here at The Bedford Sixth Form has provided me with a broad spectrum over all the different aspects of creativity that interest me, and which I have grown up with. The Art rooms are much larger than at school and we also have a photography studio. The teachers all bring their own experiences into lessons; one has worked as a photographer and another as a graphic designer. Last year I really enjoyed looking at individuality within small groups in society and was inspired by the work of artists such as Martin Parr, who I got to meet on a recent enrichment trip.

I am very interested in different cultures and like to be able to communicate with people; hence French and Spanish were my other two choices. Once I finish my A-Levels I am taking a gap year to travel around South America and Asia. After that I have a place at Oxford Brookes to study Fine Art. I would like to get into the film industry eventually. I’ve been organising my own work experience placements outside of studying and have worked in production, editing and animation.

BETHAN'S STORY Studying: Dance, Health & Social Care and Sociology Previous school: St Thomas More Next destination: University of Nottingham When I think about what first attracted me to The Bedford Sixth Form, I can say it was being able to study subjects not available at school, the teachers and the atmosphere. I have danced outside of school since I was young and it was great to be able to extend this passion into my A-Level choices. There is a dance studio on site and assessment is via a practical and a written exam, which breaks down the exam pressure a little.

I am also studying Health & Social Care, which I took at GCSE and is also coursework based. My third subject is Sociology and I’ve particularly enjoyed the Crime & Deviance unit this year. I have a place at the University of Nottingham to study Sociology with Criminology when I finish here. My teachers are really nice. They are there to support you and they care about your success. You are also allocated a Personal Tutor when you start and they hold one hour weekly sessions which you can go along to if you feel you need to talk about anything. Finally there is a very nice and calm atmosphere here. It’s an independent learning environment but with the support there if you need it. I am glad I came here. If I had stayed at school I think I may have regretted it. The Bedford Sixth Form has in no doubt set me up for university.

As a Science student, you will be kept busy with a range of trips to places such as the British Science Museum, National History Museum and external planned lectures, as well as plenty of opportunities for practical investigations.
Science A-Levels are required as entrance for most Medicine and Veterinary courses in addition to a range of other science related degrees. Graduates with science degrees are in great demand in the UK. For example the salary of an average Physics graduate is up to 30% more than someone with just A-levels.1 Future careers could include becoming a doctor, vet, zoologist or a forensic scientist. You will be given the opportunity to experience a wide range of sporting activities and achieve recognised sporting leadership qualifications, such as The Rugby Football Union Rugby Leaders Level 1 Award if you study on the Sport Diploma. Past enrichment activities that have specifically complemented our Sports and Physical Education courses include the Intercollege rugby 7s tournament, 5-a-side football tournament and Bedford mixed netball tournament.
You can progress on to a university course or into a range of careers including sports therapy, sports science support (for both the general public and professional athletes and teams), fitness consultancy, sports coaching and development, teaching and lecturing, sports marketing and promotion and academic sports research.
In lessons, you will regularly have a chance to participate in football, dodgeball, badminton, netball, handball and fitness sessions, as well as the chance to coach fellow students.

EXCITING ENRICHMENT WORK EXPERIENCE The Bedford Sixth Form encourages students to find placements related to their subject or future career path, to enhance their personal development, UCAS forms and CVs. In the past, students have found shadowing work in law firms and the healthcare industry whilst others have been involved in Bedford Borough play schemes, local gyms and sports clubs in addition to overseas schemes such as Camp America. The Bedford Sixth Form also has an award-winning careers team who provide guidance and support to those who require any help determining what type of work to pursue or in locating any work experience and we have a Job Shop noticeboard and bulletin available for all students looking for part-time employment.

The students saw much of what NYC has to offer with a trip to a Q&A session at the Film Comment Selects Film Festival at The Lincoln Center where the panel discussed a recently rediscovered film from the 1960s directed by Paul Newman.
The Sanger Institute in Cambridge focuses on scientific research to understand the role of genetics in health. The Institute was a leader in the Human Genome Project which sequenced all of the chromosomes of a human being. When our Biology students visited the Institute, they had a tour of the labs, were given an overview of some of the techniques used to sequence DNA and met with a scientist who works on the genome of zebra fish.
Philosophy students had the opportunity to discover Rome during this visit to Italy’s capital city. The group visited for 5 days and saw many of the famous sites such as the Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, The Colosseum and The Vatican City.

STRONG SUPPORT Everyone has different needs when it comes to support and guidance. At The Bedford Sixth Form our team of Student Services advisers give you the support you need, when you need it.
PERSONAL TUTOR
ADDITIONAL SUPPORT
You will be assigned a professionally trained personal tutor when you start your course who will give you oneon-one support throughout your time with us. You will also meet your tutor regularly, together with the other students in your tutor group, to keep you informed of everything going on at The Bedford Sixth Form or to work on group projects, such as career planning.
If you have an identified learning difficulty and/or disability you may be entitled to additional support. This could include: help in and outside of class; the loan of specialist equipment you may need to complete work; support with making special arrangements for taking exams; support in accessing our facilities.
UCAS JOURNEY
Our counsellor is available to help if personal difficulties are getting in the way of your studies. We provide quiet spaces where you can talk through your problems with a counsellor, and work towards making them easier to handle.
We have a dedicated team and comprehensive programme in place to support you through the UCAS application process. We encourage you to start preparing your UCAS applications early so it is with teachers by late October to be reviewed and checked. We also run drop-in sessions throughout the UCAS application period, where you can get advice about the whole process.
CAREERS ADVICE Throughout your time with us, our careers advisers are here to help you find the right path, providing impartial advice and guidance on everything from your university choices or training and work prospects to CVs and interview preparation.

We also have a range of financial support packages available to help with essential costs, such as equipment, books, clothing or meals, as well as bursaries for vulnerable students or those in severe financial hardship.

FEES AND FUNDING TUITION AND EXAM FEES If you are aged 16-18 on 31 August 2018 and a British or European Union resident, the tuition and exam registration fees for your course are FREE. If you are aged 19 or over you can apply for the government’s Advanced Learner Loan, which is a low-interest, repayable loan to pay for tuition fees. The amount is paid directly to The Bedford Sixth Form on your behalf. You’ll only need to start repaying the loan after you’ve completed your course and you’re earning more than £21,000 per year. If you don’t complete your course you will be required to repay the loan amount relative to your attendance. When you stop attending, payments will stop and you’ll only be liable to repay the amount (including any interest accrued on that amount) that’s already been paid to the College. 98% of our students went onto further study or into full time employment, with 80% progressing directly into their first choice university, including prestigious Russell Group institutions such as Warwick, Leeds, Newcastle and Glasgow.
All students benefit from their own personal tutor for ongoing one-to-one support. For help with subject related questions and queries, their subject tutors will always be on hand to help, making sure your son or daughter gets the help they need to perform at their very best.

We offer full support with UCAS applications and, as always, our support teams are available to assist with any concerns or problems students may encounter in moving on to higher education.
