English & maths

English and maths Love them or hate them, English and maths are essential for work and education. Many employers complain that too many young people lack the literacy (English) and numeracy (maths) skills needed for jobs in today’s workplace. You’ll also find that entry on to higher level courses requires grades 9–4 or A*–C in GCSE English and maths. In short, they’re very important and we’ll help you get the grades you need.

Work experience Work experience is a key (and fun!) part of your full-time study programme at College. We have strong links with hundreds of employers in every industry area to ensure we find the best placement for you. Every student has a minimum of 20 hours per year of external work experience. Here’s a little peek at where some of our recent students have spent theirs: • BBC Radio 1 – Media • Best Western Hotel – Travel & Tourism • Corby Borough Council – Plumbing • Jeakins Weir - Business • Kettering Fire Station – Public Services • Northampton Saints Rugby Club – Sport

“I completed work experience at Corby Borough Council, helping with minor repairs such as fixing taps in domestic dwellings.”

ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION Our Access to Higher Education courses build the skills, knowledge and confidence you need to progress on to higher education in the subject area you’re interested in. They are recognised as entry qualifications by universities across the UK. You will gain a good introduction to your chosen subject, develop your study skills and increase your confidence and ability with this level of study. The course takes one year and, on completion, you will gain an Access to Higher Education Diploma. All pathways will include compulsory English and maths, as well as research skills units. You will also need to have good IT skills as all of your assignments will be carried out using either Word, Excel or PowerPoint. You can undertake IT Skills at our Learning Centres based in Corby and Kettering.

If you complete one of our Access to Higher Education courses and use an Advanced Learner Loan to pay for your tuition fee, the Student Loans Company will write off the balance on the Advanced Learner Loan if you then go on to complete an undergraduate course. You must be aged 18 or over to apply and will need to have English Language and maths GCSE at grade C (4) or above or equivalent Level 2 qualifications before the start of the course and complete a successful interview. You will be in college for three days per week and for most Access courses will have to also undertake a relevant work placement for up to 150 hours (which is a requirement for some courses). A work placement officer may be able to support you in finding suitable places. You may have to complete a successful DBS check. If you are successful you may qualify for a free place. Alternatively, we offer Level 2 and Level 3 courses that may be funded for 16-18 year olds.

If you are aged 19 or over, you may qualify for an Advanced Learner Loan to help you pay the tuition fees for this course. Alternatively, you can pay by instalments to help make the cost more affordable. Find out more about your payment options at www.tresham.ac.uk/access

Access to Higher Education

“I’d been out of education for nine years before starting this course at College. I currently work in administration but I want to get into mental health nursing, so this is the first step towards getting the qualifications I need. Once I have the Access qualification I am planning to go to the University of Northampton to study Mental Health Nursing. I’ve really enjoyed the psychology side of the course because it is the most relevant aspect for me and my career plans, and I enjoy learning about the brain. My tutors have been very supportive. Getting back into education was a bit of a shock at first, but it’s surprising how quickly everything comes back to you. The Access course is perfect for a mature student working full-time because there is the flexibility to study in your own time and fit the work around you.”

Access to Higher Education

“My aim is to qualify as a trained Counsellor. I’m currently working full-time in an admin role at Northampton General Hospital and am studying this Access course part-time. I am really enjoying the freedom of the course; having conversations with your tutors about where you want to get to and experiencing the passion they have for their subject. It’s not like school where you’re just about the grades, it’s all about you and their enthusiasm really helps you to succeed. After the Access course I plan to continue in part-time study on the CPCAB Counselling Diploma here at College. This will qualify me to work in an agency and then if I choose to work for myself I’ll need to take additional qualifications with the Open University.”

Applied Sciences

“When I’d finished my GCSEs I wanted to learn more about science because I find it so interesting to see how our body works and how it adapts to our surroundings. Secondary school just gave us the basics, but at College it’s about researching the subject and taking it to the next level. I really enjoy studying chemistry and biology together because it enables me to combine my passion for sport with my scientific knowledge. I want to study Science at university but also bring sport into my education, perhaps through Sport Science, Biochemistry or even Pharmacology. A career that combines the two would be ideal, such as a Personal Trainer or Laboratory Scientist.”

Business

“My main interest is in International Business and I have already applied to study this at Aston University. In College we learn how companies operate on an international level, compared to smaller business. I’d love to get into a managerial role in a multi-national company and eventually have my own business one day. Outside of lessons I have been President of the Tresham Students Union. This involved organising events and lunchtime activities, from Remembrance Day to the Annual Student Conference, and I was very proud to win an award for my work at last year’s College Achievements’ Ceremony.”

“This course has taught me a lot and given me enough work experience to feel ready to start my apprenticeship with AR Electrics, an opportunity which came about through the College. The practical work on the course has been really interesting. I enjoy wiring up all of the circuits and have been proud of my terminations, which were really neat (stripping wire and making sure the copper is doubled over) and the clipping (making sure all the wires are in place).”

Creative Arts

“I have always loved art and creating things, but also have a strong interest in fashion. I love streetwear and high fashion, and am inspired by designers such as A-COLD-WALL.

My tutors are really supportive and there is more one-to-one support compared to at school. I also have more in common with the other students here, because I am connected to people who are also into fashion. The best thing about College is that you have free will to create whatever you decide, with all the equipment you need available to you.”

“I’m really proud of the progress I have made so far at College, having worked up through the levels from Level 1 to Level 3. I love the creative side of the course. We have to make our own resources for the activities to carry out on placement, such as phonics cards for literacy and dice for numeracy. I really enjoy the placements twice a week because I like to be out and about. I’ve had experience in a pre-school, baby room and reception class in a primary school. Our final placement is our own choice, so I’ll be choosing a nursery.”

“I want to work in the Navy or Army as an Engineer. I’m interested in marine-based work, for example on the engineering rigs, because I have a love of travelling and this is a job where you have a lot of time away and earn good money. I chose to study Engineering at College to help me access a change of career. I decided I wanted to do something different and the engineering industry is booming with lots of different fields to go into. Plus, being able to make things out of nothing is always a good skill to have!”

Engineering

“From the age of seven I knew I wanted a career in the Navy. Engineering is a very practical, hands on subject, which is what I enjoy the most. I had a taste of engineering at school and learnt how to use various tools, but we didn’t have the machines that we have here at College. I really enjoy welding as it’s very hands on and, with all the practical work here, you learn by trying things out for yourself once your tutor has shown you. I know that when I start work experience later in the year, I will now be much more confident in my abilities. I’ve met so many new people since leaving school and the tutors have been very supportive helping with assessments and reports. They push you to do well, but there is never too much pressure and the assessments are spread out over the year so it’s not too stressful. I’m looking forward to progressing on to the Level 3 programme.” Chloe | Engineering Level 2

“I want to be a Hairdresser and have my own salon one day. Coming to College has helped me to work towards this goal because I knew what I wanted out of it from day one. Once I finish the Level 3 I want to take the Barbering course, because I think it’s important to be able to do all aspects of hair. I work in a salon on Saturdays, which helps me further with my training because the owner shows me how to do different techniques and I get to work on a few of her clients. In College we also have real clients come in to the salon and it’s great to interact with different people. Last year we got to go to Salon International, the UK’s biggest hairdressing event, held in London. ”

“Although my background is in ballet, I would like a career in musical theatre and this is the best college course I found that would give me the all round training I need for my specific career path. I’ve danced since I was young and attend ballet, limbering and pointe classes outside of College. I love how intensive this programme at College is; both the challenges it brings and the routine. For example, I had never tap danced, so learning that was a big challenge and we are always rehearsing for performances – we do six per year, plus two dance shows. The tutors have so much industry knowledge and they are focused on getting you where you want to be; they’re very supportive. We’re also lucky enough to have great facilities including the lighting, stage area, dance studio and performance hall. I am looking forward to going to the Italia Conti Academy in London to continue my training and study the three year Diploma in Musical Theatre. My goal is to become a professional performer in musical theatre.”

“I’ve played the guitar for 10 years and last year learnt to play the ukulele. A band that I’m into - McFly - wrote a song featuring a ukulele, so I learnt to play it to perform the song! I’ve always been interested in music and like a mix of bands from Queen to AC/DC. My ultimate aim is to be in a band, recording and selling music for a living. Music gives you the freedom to be creative and express yourself - and so does studying at College. I love creating material and working on my own EP, which is a pop/punk style. I already have my lyrics, so I’m building it up around those. We have complete freedom to pick and choose what songs we want to work on and the tutors are really good. We’ve had some speakers come into lessons from universities to talk about careers in music, as well as someone from Echo Factory, which provides professional music training. I want to progress on to the Level 3 course after this and then go to university to study Music. I’m looking at Northampton, De Montfort and Echo Factory.”

“If you’re looking for a good Sports course to develop your skills and with dedicated tutors, then I would certainly recommend Tresham College. I’ve played rugby since the age of nine and being a part of Tresham’s Rugby Academy has really helped me to progress in the sport, while also developing academically. It’s much easier to get your work done and progress well at College, compared to school, and the things you learn can all be transferred to the world of work. For instance, last year I had a work experience placement at Northampton Saints Rugby Club in the social inclusion department. This involved helping kids who had been expelled from school, and the theory we had covered at College about social regeneration and inclusion really helped me with this. Once I finish at College I would like to study at university in order to become a qualified sports therapist.”

Uniformed Public Services

“I originally decided to study A-Levels at sixth form but when I realised I wanted to get into the Army, I knew I needed to study in a more relevant area and make sure I could get the best possible support. That’s why I chose the Level 3 study programme at Tresham College. College offers a different way of gaining qualifications that are equivalent to A-Levels. I’m learning from tutors who have all been in either the armed forces or the police, and the trips and work experience are completely relevant to what I want to do in the future. We’ve visited parliament and various emergency services, and my work experience will include one week with Northamptonshire Police and one week at Kettering Fire Station.”

Uniformed Public Services

“Studying Uniformed Public Services at College has helped me to discover what it is like to work in this sector, and I am now working towards joining the police force. My interest started during a College trip to the police and I chose to research further into the role of a police officer during my coursework. My tutor has worked in the Police, so he knows exactly what to expect and helped to introduce me to the specials, or volunteer Police Officers. He gave me sheets to help me prepare for the interview and I am now in training with them. Once I graduate I’ll do around 16 hours of unpaid police work a week. I love that College is getting me ready for my future and I like the fitness side as well. I was on the College rugby team up until last year when I turned 19. We’ve also been on a one week Army trip and visited the local fire service, while my two work experience placements have been in gyms working in customer service. I have an unconditional offer to study Criminology & Policing at De Montfort University in Leicester. Once I graduate from university I will apply for a full-time job in the police. Without the support of the staff here at College, I don’t think I would have got as far as I have. If they have some spare time they will always give it up to help you.”

Training the race technicians of the future The Bedford College Group is proud to offer motorsport technician training at our National College for Motorsport based at the Silverstone Circuit in Northamptonshire, where students are taught by highly-skilled tutors, experienced in many areas of the motorsport industry. We are the first college in the UK to achieve the Motorsport Academy Employer Recognition Scheme Charter Mark for our training for race technicians. The scheme was introduced in 2007 to ensure that training providers deliver quality, industry-relevant training. In January 2018 we were awarded the Motorsport Industry Association ‘Service to Industry Award’ for our exceptional performance in training and guiding young people into Race Technicians apprenticeships. You will be given the opportunity to work at tests and races with the College and our motorsport partners. Through our excellent links to the motorsport industry, we offer tremendous opportunities, with a high percentage of our students progressing into employer-led apprenticeships.

Why choose the National College for Motorsport? • Based at the Silverstone race circuit • Study programmes designed to meet the needs of the motorsport industry • Purpose-built workshops and study facilities • Practical work experience with professional race teams • Established links with motorsport teams
