W ELCOME A Year in Review
W
hat an amazing year it has been, by any standards! I do hope that you enjoy reading about the successes of the school year in this new publication, a year in which national recognition has been conferred upon an extraordinary breadth of activity. It reflects, we hope, a very well balanced school with opportunities for the highest possible achievements in almost any sphere, from academia to sport to music, drama and other cultural pursuits. You will need to take it from me that the boys (and staff!) mentioned in the stories that follow, either individually or as part of a team, remain well grounded, yet confident, good people, with plenty to say and an ease in any company. It is certainly our aim that top level achievement is matched by humility – something very clearly embodied by our captain of rugby this year, for instance, or our choirmaster after their respective successes. But I also encourage you to read beyond the achievements themselves. Read beyond the national rugby success that has inspired so many boys; from the U14D team, who share the same spirit and camaraderie as the 1st XV itself, to the boy who has never played rugby but whose journey is about to start. Read beyond the award-winning catering team to the lady who has served here, smiling and chatty, for 22 years, and whose profound sense of community has always been there, national recognition or not. Read beyond the awards for the Quarry Theatre to the hours of planning by both employees and volunteers who love working at and for the School. These highlights are indeed a stunning record of the range of activities at Bedford School; they also hint at the sheer volume of activity below the surface. Whether you are a member of the current community or not, you will always be made welcome at the school.

I
n a wonderful celebration of science, we welcomed Lord Professor Robert Winston to the school to officially open our refurbished science laboratories and give a lecture on ‘Beginnings of Life’. Twelve laboratories and classrooms within the Science Department were upgraded and transformed during the three-year project; creating an excellent, modern learning environment to inspire a new generation of boys. Over a third of Bedford School’s 2016 leavers will go on to study a sciencerelated degree at a top university.

edford School’s outstanding Careers and UCAS provision was recognised with a Gold Education 2 Employment (E2E) award this summer. Only schools who demonstrate excellence and innovation in their provision for pupil development, with regard to future employment are accredited with this nationally recognised award from the Onslow Trust. We are proud that boys from all year groups receive high-quality innovative careers education, information, advice and guidance, and benefit from a wide range of lectures, guest speakers and careers opportunities. After several rounds of interviews, Daniel was selected as just one of a handful of applicants, out of the hundreds who applied, to secure an apprenticeship contract with the leading pharmaceutical company. Mel Lincoln, Head of Careers and UCAS commented: “Having implemented numerous direct route opportunities for our boys, it is clear that the modern, diverse and ever changing business world is increasingly seeking high-calibre school leavers, such as Daniel. Apprenticeships today offer leavers a real opportunity to maximise their potential through on-the-job experience, alongside achieving their university qualifications.”
In a highly informative and insightful talk, Mary Curnock Cook, Chief Executive of UCAS, spoke to boys about the current landscape for admissions and the value of a university education in bridging the gap between Sixth Form and the real world, as well as different ways to think about course choices.
Literature, Media & The Arts In a special dedicated evening, our boys explored the numerous options open to them with a panel of professionals who studied English at university before pursuing careers in journalism, publishing, acting, law, academia and television.

ver thirty Upper Sixth boys cooked up a storm in the school’s dining halls in two fun cookery sessions, designed to give them hands on, practical experience of food survival away from home. In a series of cook-along sessions, boys mastered mince three-ways: chilli, spaghetti bolognaise and fajitas, eggs four ways: poached, scrambled and fried, plus omelettes, as well as chicken curry and chicken stir fry. Every boy enjoyed the opportunity to cook a number of the dishes and sampled their culinary creations; all of which cost less than £10! The boys left the sessions armed with a great selection of simple, healthy meals that they can cook on a budget, an enthusiasm to get in the kitchen and experience to stand them in good stead as they head off to university.
