JULY/AUGUST 2021

PRESIDENT ’S LET TER

Tunic from locally based company, NicoBlu

This July/August 2021 issue of Bedford & New Canaan Magazine marks one year of issues since we acquired and rejuvenated the 16-year old Bedford Magazine, and adopted the ‘Always Local, Always Positive’ motto. We’ve tripled the circulation to 24,000 copies per issue, so that we now mail to every household in New Canaan and every household in Armonk, Bedford, Pound Ridge and Waccabuc, and to selected postal routes in Bedford Hills, Katonah, Mt. Kisco, Pleasantville, North Salem and South Salem. We’ve tripled the number of pages, and set a new standard in print and design quality. And, most importantly, we think we’ve hit a home run on our core mission of bringing you interesting and insightful features on some of the fascinating people, fabulous homes and special places, and terrific charities that are all local.

We were particularly proud to have our two local Congressmen, Jim Himes (CT) and Sean Patrick Maloney (NY), interviewed in our kickoff September/October 2020 issue, in an article called “Cross-Border Buds” (because the two really are friends - and to emphasize that the ‘Greater Bedford / New Canaan’ towns that we serve are really all part of the same community). We’ve been honored to do cover features on Sharon Prince and The Grace Farm Foundation (Sep/Oct 20), Martha Hunt Handler and The Wolf Conservation Center (Mar/Apr 21), and Philip Johnson’s Glass House, authored by noted architectural writer James McCown, in addition to one of our favorite features, getting you inside to see “Art At the Glass House”, authored by Rachael Palacios of Heather Gaudio Studios (Jan/Feb 21). And we’re pretty pleased about landing Martha Stewart (Nov/Dec 20), Will Reeves (Jan/Feb 21), The Fat Jewish (May/Jun 21), and now Georgina Bloomberg (Jul/Aug 21) for our other in-depth, cover interviews. We’ve gotten you inside a lot of spectacular residences, some guided by our Homes Editor, Sue DeChiara (who has over 150k followers on her Instagram @zhush), including the ‘Sister Parish’ House (2021 Homes Issue), Glencliff in Bedford (2021 Homes Issue), 55 St. John Place in New Canaan (Jan/Feb 21), and 727 Oenoke in New Canaan (2021 Homes Issue). And we’ve been able to focus attention on a number of great local charities, including Grace Farms (Sep/Oct 20), The Community Center of Northern Westchester (Nov/Dec 20), The Storm Ice Hockey (Jan/Feb 21), Regional Hospice and The Ronald McDonald House of the Greater Hudson Valley (2021 Homes Issue), The Wolf Conservation Center (Mar/Apr 21), LiveGirl (May/Jun 21), and now, Endeavor and the New Canaan Mounted Troop equine assisted therapy charities (Jul/Aug 21). We are entirely grateful for your attention and acceptance! Research shows that each of you devotes at least an hour to each of our issues, and that B&NC Mag stays ‘on the coffee table’ all year long - and, for us as publishers, that’s the ultimate reward! And, we’re thrilled to be starting our second year of B&NC Mag, with what is now a long list of local famous, fabulous and fascinating people, places and things we’ve got in the queue to be featured. As just one example, and while we don’t disclose our cover features prior to publication, the #1 classical violinist in the world and his opera star wife, who live in Mt Kisco, will grace our Sep/Oct 21 cover! ‘Stay Tuned’, keep telling our advertisers that you’ve responded to the ad you saw in B&NC Mag, follow us on the area’s largest locally-focused Instagram @bedfordnewcanaanmag, and check in at bedfordnewcanaanmag.com for additional content, a local calendar of events, and for a library of our complete issues. Sincerely, CASEY ARDEN KAPLAN

SETTING Local wedding and events planner, René Hue, of Murmuration LTD, has been putting together what she calls Jewel Box weddings throughout the past year, as couples have been opting for smaller and more intimate events. But with the world returning to normal, restrictions lifted, and larger events making a resurgence, René wanted to inspire the affianced to dream big! B&NC Mag followed along for a gorgeous day at the Glenmere Mansion where René set the scene for events to come…

THE SCENE From luscious table-scapes to a live harpist, decadent cake and treats, and even bringing in a local model to showcase a gorgeous couture vintage gown… the event was spectacular, and reminded us of how much we’ve missed larger-scale events and gatherings.

Photos: Sarah Farrell

Drawing inspiration from Les Arts Decoratifs, Art Nouveau, and the Roaring 20’s, the aesthetic of the event was heavily vintage-inspired. 18” tall hand blown wine goblets added an elegant touch to the table settings punctuating the sophisticated aesthetic, and diminutive French patisseries stylized with dainty butterflies and white chocolate rosebuds, alongside luscious raspberry macarons set the afternoon over the edge.

RENWICK “We were both living in Manhattan when Jamie and I matched on Bumble. I had actually just downloaded the app for the first time and was joking around with friends, when one of the girls I was with realized she knew Jamie. We actually had a few mutual friends. So we decided to meet up at a restaurant later that week - and we immediately hit it off,” Maggie explains with a grin. The pair dated for four years, two in Manhattan, followed by two in the DC area, while Jamie was pursuing his MBA at Georgetown, and then got engaged at Bedford Golf & Tennis.

Jamie was born and raised in Bedford, his parents, Missy and Jim Renwick, are the owners of Renwick Real Estate, and his two sisters, Pippa and Sarah, are also featured in this issue for starting their own line of women’s golf apparel. Maggie’s parents, Sue and Dan McDermott, live in DC, and her identical twin sister, Mary, lives right in town, in Bedford, with her husband, Cameron, and brand new baby boy, Brooks. So Jamie and Maggie always knew they’d come back to Bedford to be with family, and it was a natural place for them to decide to tie the knot.

The couple got married in October at St Matthews Church, with about twenty guests, followed by a reception at Bedford Post. “We stayed there overnight and had a really nice dinner at the yoga loft,” Maggie said. The couple’s niece and three nephews were the flower girl and ring bearers. Maggie had her own sister, Jamie’s two sisters, and a cousin, as her bridesmaids. Jamie had his two new brother-in-laws, Cameron, and Maggie’s brother, Danny, as his groomsmen, and a friend, Charlie, as his Best Man. Because the wedding was so small and intimate, Maggie put a lot of time into the details and focused particular attention on her paper invitations and her flowers. “Bedford Village Flower Shoppe was amazing; they were super 24

creative with how to incorporate the different colors of blues to match my blue and white color scheme. And the owner, Lauren, hand-delivered the flowers herself the morning of the wedding. She was so calm and zen, and so helpful! It was obvious that they had put a ton of effort into making everything perfect,” Maggie said. “The best part of the party was definitely our band, Hudson Horns. There were only 20 guests, but we had already hired our band back when the wedding was planned to be a bit larger, so we had a 10-piece band! We joked that every couple had their own band member,” Jamie recalls warmly. J U LY / A U G U S T

ANDREW & AMANDA

LICHTENBERG

Photos: Kimberly Craven

“Caramoor really stood out to us because of how beautiful the gardens and outdoor theatre are,” Andrew Lichtenberg explains. His wife, Amanda continued, “I have a connection with music; I did my bachelors in Music in Flute Performance, and so the musical connection at Caramoor was a huge draw for us. And the sunken garden has this beautiful romance.” With a venue picked, Andrew and Amanda planned their dream wedding. The couple met in D.C., in 2014, through a mutual friend, but really started off as a long-distance relationship only a few weeks later, when Andrew moved back to New York to start working for his family’s company. They did the backand-forth on Amtrak for a while, and then about three years later, Amanda moved up to Manhattan to join Andrew. J U LY / A U G U S T

2 0 2 1

Andrew proposed during a trip to Vietnam in 2019. Amanda’s father, Ky Truong, was a Vietnamese refugee, and she had never visited the country before, so the trip had special significance. In Vietnamese culture, when a man proposes, he gifts the woman a traditional leaf hat with a message inscribed on the inside brim so that his wife should always be able to look up and smile at his message when she’s out in the sun… so when Andrew appeared holding one, Amanda began smiling ear to ear. ANDREW & AMANDA

With a May 2021 wedding, the couple was able to share their love with about 150 guests. The wedding ceremony took place in Caramoor’s Sunken Garden. The couple wanted to be surrounded by flowers, color and happiness. Given Amanda’s musical focus, a lot of planning was put into the accompaniment for that portion of the evening; a chamber music ensemble Vista Lirica, kept the 19th century romantic torch burning. A cocktail hour and reception in the large tent followed the ceremony. Amanda and Andrew wanted to overwhelm their guests with amazing food; Andrew’s Dad is a foodie, and self-identified gourmand, and helped in the process of picking out the delicious options for the evening. The cocktail hour was complete with a giant raw bar, dim sum, and passed hors devours, accompanied by a jazz trio. The main reception was held in Caramoor’s giant tent - with more flowers than one could imagine. Andrew’s mom is a designer and helped design and create decorations for the ceiling and the tent poles - as she didn’t want to leave anything uncovered. “It was like a giant garden inside of the tent,” Andrew said. For that portion of the evening, the couple chose a twelve-piece band that did an amazing job keeping the party exciting and even played a mean Hora!

28

BEDFORD & NEW CANAAN

Amanda’s favorite piece - For the processional, I chose Liebesgruss by Edward Elgar (more commonly known as Salut d’Amour publishers said a French title would sell better). Liebesgruss means “love’s greeting.” Elgar had written the piece in response to a poem his future wife had written him entitled “Love’s Grace.” It was an ode to his soon to be wife - even the autographed manuscript was written in his best handwriting, which to some scholars meant that he really cared about presenting something beautiful and with care for her. They were engaged the following fall. The piece has this gentle intimacy with a heartbeatlike rhythm in the accompaniment and pulls at your heartstrings all the way through. I chose this piece because I wanted everyone walking down the aisle to feel “love’s greeting,” especially Andrew!

Renew Your Body

Have you found yourself feeling self-conscious about the effects pregnancy and nursing have had on your body? A woman’s body is often left in havoc after childbirth: breasts are sagging and deflated; the abdomen is stretched with excess skin and muscle damage; and stubborn pockets of fat may not respond to a healthy diet and exercise routine. A “Mommy Makeover” can help women who are unhappy with the appearance of their bodies after pregnancy and breastfeeding by combining multiple procedures in one surgery. The most common procedures that are performed during a Mommy Makeover are: • Breast augmentation can address breast asymmetry, lack of volume, and deflation • Breast lift restores a perky and firm breast appearance • Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) re-attaches separated abdominal muscles (known as Diastasis rectis), eliminates sagging and loose skin, and reduces the appearance of stretch marks • Liposuction removes stubborn fat deposits from the legs, buttocks, hips, waist, abdomen, back, arms, and neck Here are some Frequently Asked Questions regarding the surgery: How do I find a surgeon? Select a qualified surgeon who specializes in these surgeries. He/She should be certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Which surgeries will be best for me? During your consultation and evaluation, your surgeon will evaluate your medical history and conduct a physical exam of the areas you would like to target. If you choose a surgeon at a large, multi-specialty medical group, such as CareMount Medical, your plastic surgeon is able to review your electronic medical record and he/she can communicate directly with your internist and your other physicians. What is the age range for women interested in getting a Mommy Makeover? Typically, women in their 30s-50s. Age is not as important as the patient’s health history. The most important aspect in undergoing these procedures is safety. Your surgeon will determine the final surgical plan based on your medical history. How long do I have to wait after giving birth to undergo a Mommy Makeover? It is important that you are healthy enough to undergo plastic surgery which will be determined by your surgeon. An ideal candidate will be close to her weight prior to being pregnant as well as someone who has finished breastfeeding. What’s the typical recovery time? When multiple procedures are done the patient should plan on spending one night in the hospital and can return home the next day. The recovery time usually lasts for one to four weeks. Because every patient is different this time may vary. 32

BLACK BRIDGE MOTORS WHERE DREAMS COME TRUE BY ROGER GARBOW

Basically, what’s your goal with the car? “You don’t need to know anything about engines or transmissions, you just have to tell me how it should look, feel and most importantly, drive.” Gilbert continues, “We can accomplish anything, our work requires no excuses, and we produce some truly desirable and actually usable cars. Just recently some custom rebuilds have included Vettes, Mustangs, Broncos, Wagoneers, a BMW 3.0 and a Jaguar E-Type. Really, one of the most compelling things we do in transforming vintage vehicles to Black Bridge standards is being able to make significant improvements in the way a vehicle drives and operates. Where the old car had sloppy steering and floaty suspension, the new vehicle is precise, comfortable and confidence inspiring. All the work we do is top quality, but I’m not trying to get everyone to build a show-only concours car, if what they really want is a great driving car with a bit of a patina to knock around on weekends. We’re focused on building our customer’s dream, not ours.”

“You don’t need to know anything about engines or transmissions, you just have to tell me how it should look, feel and most importantly, drive.”

Customers can make selections from a wide array of exterior paint colors and interior materials in the Black Bridge sample room. It’s not dissimilar from working with an architect and interior designer on a custom home. Black Bridge only uses trusted components for suspension, brakes and electronics, and they work exclusively with suppliers and providers that are proven in quality and performance, so the finished product is, quite literally, more than the sum of its parts. Once all the specifications are locked down, the build process begins. From brand new crate motors and transmissions to LED lighting and complete braking systems, Black Bridge’s parts inventory is fully stocked with row after row of components and supplies, and, while having all of that inventory is not a cheap investment, having most parts on hand dramatically speeds up the build process - especially in these days of global supply chain slowdowns. Black Bridge’s staff of over 20 specialists approach every facet of each project, from stripping the car down to the chassis to stitching leather seats, with detailed attention and a craftsman’s care. The shop is clean, well-lit, and organized, and things seem to be humming like in a high-tech factory more than clinking-andclanking like most places where folks work on cars. As your build moves along, Scott delivers regular updates on the progress. The anticipation to see the finished product is real, but having consistent, honest feedback and updates helps the time fly by. And then, after all of the mechanical, paint and interior work is complete, each vehicle undergoes extensive testing before delivery. Scott is adamant that every vehicle wearing the Black Bridge badge must be completely safe and reliable. As he says, with a confident smile, “We make sure the car is ready for delivery before the customer gets the keys. I happily test drive and sign off on each one of our cars.”

These days, vintage Land Rover Defenders are in high demand and Black Bridge has multiple under construction at any given time. They’ve recently produced a number of long wheelbase 110s and two-door Defender 90s, with soft tops and hardtops alike. They’re currently working on one for a very tall customer that required completely re-configuring the interior and moving the seat down and back to create a much more comfortable driving position.

For those looking for a special vehicle, but who don’t want to go the full custom route, there is the Black Bridge FUNCTION line. With FUNCTION, Black Bridge creates a limited, numbered run of a specific vehicle. Since it’s a series production, the build process is faster, and you don’t need to think about all of the details. The basic vehicle is locked in, so you’ll know exactly what will end up in your driveway; but you still have the ability to make it your own. You still have choices in paint colors, different interior materials, and other addon custom bits to suit your needs.

The #1 of 10,

FUNCTION 110 series parked at the Black Bridge Showroom, resplendent in Nolita Grey, is in a word, spectacular. Scott had been frustrated by what was available when he was looking for a fun car for his own family, and realized he could build the FUNCTION 110 as the ultimate solution. It’s the size of a large SUV, so there’s ample room for all your people and all your stuff. And with an open top, it has the air of a very luxurious African safari vehicle. It’s basically a multi-person, four-wheel-drive, convertible. The FUNCTION 110 is a real beach cruiser - perfect for summers everywhere!. Black Bridge started with design cues from a Defender 110, but elongated the wheelbase to 116 inches. The chassis components are sourced from a modern Jeep for go anywhere ability and bulletproof reliability. The engine is GM’s powerful and dependable LT3 V-8, mated to either a smooth 6-speed automatic or a 6-speed manual for three pedal enthusiasts. For those who want even more performance, you can upgrade to the supercharged LT4, putting out a whopping 650 horsepower. You have a choice of two or four-wheel drive, and you can customize the number and types of seats. Black Bridge will build-in special features for pets, fishing gear, beverage coolers or a rack for specialty gear or a place for hidden storage. Maybe an onboard generator and

high-fidelity weatherproof audio system for campsite fun. The aluminum body is all new and the straight body panels make you think you just saw the perfect phantom of the classic Land Rover drive by. The FUNCTION 110 is big and purposeful, the hand stitched seats and marine grade woven flooring are designed to be weatherproof and durable, and the open top and completely modern interior make it daily drivable and fun at the same time. Black Bridge’s marriage of the classic style, beauty and presence of an old Defender, with the amenities, technology and performance of a modern luxury car would be too good to be true - if it wasn’t available right now, starting at just $145,000.

One prime example of Black Bridge’s

‘if you can dream it, Black Bridge can build it’ mentality and the unusual dreams which can emerge - is the 1990 Buick LeSabre Estate station wagon currently in the shop. Nobody’s idea of a sexy sports car, this specific vehicle was the owner’s family car growing up in the 90s...and he tracked the car down to its current owner and determined he had to restore it in homage to his childhood and the period. Unfortunately, the car was in bad shape, but when Black Bridge is done with it it’ll look just like it did when the client was bouncing around in the wayback - right down to the wood paneling. But, oh yeah, underneath it’ll have a new GM LS3 V8, a new 6-speed transmission, modern suspension, a high-performance braking system, and the interior will be reimagined for comfort and convenience.

Noting enthusiasm for the FUNCTION 110, and for unique limited production vehicles generally, Black Bridge has announced that, upon completion of the FUNCTION 110 series, it will follow-up with a limited run of FUNCTION Wagoneers. Based upon, and retaining the shape of, the much loved Jeep Grand Wagoneer, the FUNCTION Wagoneer will include updates on everything from the mechanicals to the electrics for ultimate drivability, comfort and reliability. Following on the heels - or should we say wheels - of the FUNCTION Wagoneer, will be a FUNCTION reimagined classic Mustang - inspired by the strong response to a recent Black Bridge 1965 Mustang build. Scott thinks a lot of folks will love the timeless style of the original Mustang convertible, updated with today’s performance, efficiency and dependability.

Moving forward

40

BEDFORD & NEW CANAAN

Gilbert says he’s eager to do conversions to electric power in any number of vintage cars, or even for one of the FUNCTION vehicles. But, as Gilbert sums it up, “Whether it’s a project to update a car you’ve owned for years but don’t drive enough, a full custom build or commissioning one of the FUNCTION limited production vehicles, I’m all about the customer experience. Our specialty is listening to what the customer wants and my job is turning their ideas into reality. The process is about fulfilling a fantasy, and it has to be easy and enjoyable. Black Bridge really is the place to make your automobile dreams come true.”

The

BRLA

A New Age For Some Old Trails BY Jackie Roman

Hidden amidst the pastoral wooded landscape of northern Westchester County is one of the region’s true gems — the expansive trail system of the Bedford Riding Lanes Association. The off-road trail system was established through the generosity of landowners allowing trails on their property with the purpose of affording local equestrians the dream of long and uninterrupted rides. Now 100 years old, and including 100 linear miles of trails in Bedford, Mount Kisco, Katonah, Bedford Hills, Bedford Corners and Pound Ridge, the trail system is one of the oldest and most extensive of its kind. But this venerable institution is not exclusively equine…

Photos: Kristen Vallejo

Wendy Belzberg and Emily Bushnell, co-presidents of the BRLA, have overseen a huge expansion in the usefulness of the asset by broadening membership to include more and more non-equestrians. Since taking the BRLA’s reins in fall of 2019, the pair has been on a mission to counter the perhaps understandable misconception that BRLA trails are just for horseback riding. “That has really been a major focus for us, just to educate our community on understanding that this trail system is open to you as an individual, as a family, on your feet, with your dog, or on a horse,” said Bushnell. During Covid and her own pandemic pregnancy, Emily enjoyed swapping her riding boots for a pair of running shoes, taking to the trails for meandering walks away from the bustle of her everyday life. “It’s just been a great kind of quiet place for me,” she said. “It’s a really wonderful resource.” Based on membership figures, the word is getting out! Wendy Belzberg reports that membership in the BRLA has more than tripled to reach an alltime high approaching 500 members, with those who’ve enrolled running the gamut in terms of their preferred trail usage. “Everyone belongs,” Wendy says. “You may not own a horse, but we still have 100 miles of trails perfect for jogging, walking and hiking, that are family and dog-friendly, and just waiting to be explored.” Membership is quite affordable, with annual single memberships available at $175 and family memberships at $300.

The BRLA’s new philosophy was reflected in their recent hire of Lindsay Cain Hearon to serve as Executive Director. Lindsay was working as a marketing executive at Bedford Playhouse, but despite having lived in Bedford for 10 years, she had never even considered joining the BRLA. In fact, she knew next to nothing about horses. “I knew that the BRLA was looking to expand its reach within the community and grow participation. But I didn’t know how sincere they were about that until they spoke to me. That’s when I knew they must be very serious about the non-equestrian thing,” Lindsay said, laughing. Looking at the Association with a fresh set of eyes, Ms. Hearon sees infinite potential and has already helped increase the BRLA membership, expand its social media following, and start to plan a host of new events designed to appeal to the expanded membership. This past Spring, the Association introduced the ‘Second Sunday’ series, which offers community events to Members and nonmembers on the second Sunday of every month, from May to October...No Horse Required. The first event fell on Mother’s Day and included a guided trail hike and meditation session. Other Second Sunday events include a 3-mile trail run and a special yoga session run by local resident Kristle O’Brien. On July 23, 2021, the BRLA will hold its First Annual ‘Tavern on the Trails’ event, which involves a traveling cocktail party between three host homes on the BRLA trails, with proceeds benefiting the BRLA.

Wendy Belzberg bumps into the world-famous designer and Bedford local, Steven Gambrel, and his husband, James Anderson, on a recent ride with B&NC Mag on one of her favorite trails.“It’s sometimes as much an opportunity to meet your neighbors and socialize, as it is to get outside for a ride or a great walk,” Ms. Belzberg proclaimed.

BUT, WHOA!...

There’s no need for diehard riding enthusiasts to be concerned by all the news of humans and canines hoofing it around the trail network — the BRLA is committed to educating walkers and runners about horse etiquette and will still keep its signature equestrian events, like the Hunter Pace, and continue to provide meticulous trails for the area’s equestrian community.

The Bedford Riding Lanes Association with its almost 100 miles of riding trails, the North Salem Bridle Trails Association with another 100 miles of riding trails, and the Lewisboro Horsemen’s Association with an additional 25 miles of trails, plus old Bedford’s dirt roads, and the amalgamation of farms, expansive barns, and equestrian facilities from North Salem to Katonah to Armonk, all combine to make B&NC MAG country quintessentially ‘horse country’. From more social riders to competitive athletes, including multiple Olympians, local equestrians have created beautiful and majestic estates - many of them along these interconnected trail systems - in order to enjoy their hobby or sport, while also enjoying all of the comforts of some of the nicest homes around. Muffin Dowdle is a local real-estate-agentextraordinaire with Ginnel Real Estate, an equestrian, and a regular on the BRLA trails. She rides daily through the back woods of Bedford and Pound Ridge, and is known to take some of her famous clients out for horseback tours of the area - and potential homes. Muffin took B&NC Mag on a horseback tour of three spectacular equestrian properties, each along local interconnected trail systems. Along for the ride! Dan and Jaclene Ginnel joined for the tour as well. Dan Ginnel is the second generation owner of Ginnel Real Estate, and a pillar of the Bedford community. He serves on the Advisory board of the Westchester Land Trust, the Advisory Council for the Bedford Playhouse, and is involved with the Boys and Girls Club of Northern Westchester, where he was honored in 2019 with the John Beach Award. Jaclene Ginnel is married to Dan’s son, Ben Ginnel, and was recently named the President of the family business. She is extremely active in the local equestrian community - Jaclene serves as the President of the Board at Endeavor, a charity focused on providing therapeutic opportunities with horses for a range of special needs and differently abled youth and adults, featured on page 75 in this issue. Jaclene is also involved in the Pound Ridge Business Association and the John Jay Homestead. J U LY / A U G U S T

The Beaver Dam Sanctuary was part of a land trust donated by the Montgomery family many years ago, and it was part of the original grants that first made the BRLA trails possible. The 6-stall barn on the property, and separate two-stall shed, have been home to the family’s different horses over the years… and sometimes home to a few friends’ horses or ponies too. Three paddocks provide ample room for riding and exercise when the horses aren’t being taken out on the trails. Surrounded by sixty acres of sanctuary, the property consists of over ten private acres. A quarter-mile long, gated drive winds through scenic woodlands, passes the garage and barn, and culminates in a circle in front of the residence. The grounds are spectacular, with gently rolling lawns, fenced paddocks, spectacular trees, and flowering perennials. Wisteria, Azaleas, Dogwoods, Cut-leaf Maple, Boxwood and Ornamental Grasses lend seasonal splashes of color. A stone pathway leads down to the swimming pool, and there’s even a chicken coop near the barn.

This is the epitome of country living.

The residence is distinctive and the interior spaces are rich in fun detail. Reclaimed windows, antique doors, wide plank floors, and aged millwork combine to create a living space with an Adirondack feel. And best of all, most of the main living spaces have wonderful views of the Beaver Dam River. J U LY / A U G U S T

GEORGINA BLOOMBERG Though famous for being the younger daughter of business tycoon, New York City Mayor, Presidential candidate, and philanthropic activist Michael Bloomberg, Georgina is not defined by her famous father. At 37, she is, first and foremost, 7-year old Jasper Michael Brown Bloomberg’s single mom. After that, she’s such her own person that, even in her Dad’s shadow, the public has come to know her, like Cher or Madonna, by her first name. Addressing the myriad and constant questions about her Dad, Georgina says, “Look, we’re just not the same person. There are things he does or feels strongly about that aren’t me, and while animal rights are a primary focus for me, it’s not his main issue. The truth is my parents were divorced when I was 10, my Dad ran for Mayor for the first time when I was 18, and although we are very close, I grew up with my Mom as parentin-chief. My Mom, Susan Brown, comes from a British family and was raised in the Church of England, and so I was raised as an Episcopalian; and my experience of my Dad as a politician really wasn’t part of my childhood or my formative years.” Georgina explains further, “I know that being a Bloomberg gives me huge opportunity and privilege, and I would never try to suggest that I’m in any way burdened or obligated in being my father’s daughter.

But I do believe it comes with a certain responsibility - and that’s to never disrespect what your famous parent is doing politically. I’ve always supported my Dad and his mission and don’t think it’s my job or place, using whatever platform I have because of him, to point out where we disagree or how I might do things differently. I think he was a great Mayor and that he’s accomplishing important change with the Bloomberg Family Foundation, and particularly in the area of the environment.” This year, Georgina became an ambassador for One Drop, an organization dedicated to ensuring sustainable access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene for the most vulnerable communities. Georgina is at-first careful, if not guarded, and has a manner and mannerisms that do seem somewhat like her Dad’s. She’s prepared, thoughtful, self-controlled and confident. And while she is quite strikingly beautiful, her eyes, upper lip and jaw, and size, do resemble Michael’s. ...But all the comparisons should stop there - Georgina Leigh Bloomberg is Georgina. Georgina does sit on the Board of the Bloomberg Family Foundation, but says she leaves most of the work to the Foundation’s exceptional team, and has no plan in place to take a more active role. 62

GEORGINA BLOOMBERG Georgina’s philanthropy - and the charity she takes most personally - is focused on animal rescue. She has four rescue dogs living in her house, and another half-dozen dogs in the barn. She has 8 rescue horses and a rescue donkey, pig, and rooster living on her property. She is an EQUUStar for the EQUUS Foundation and Vice President of Animal Aid USA, and has been recognized for her work protecting animals by, and serves as an active member of the Board of Directors of the Humane Society of the United States, and a Chair of their Humane Generation New York program. Georgina lobbies State governments and supports all kinds of initiatives to help the cause, and says, “In addition to efforts at the national level and working on macro solutions, I try to focus some giving at the local level, where I know I’m making a real and specific difference. Each animal matters, and with enough incremental efforts we can change the broad picture.”

To make a real and tangible difference for real-life equestrians, in 2006 Georgina founded The Rider’s Closet, a charity that collects gently used riding clothes and equipment and gets that equipment into the hands of equestrians dealing with serious illnesses and disabilities, veterans and first responders, riders from underserved communities, and most recently, families affected by the Pandemic. As an example, one set of riding clothes went out to a 30-year old Marine Corp. veteran, Caitlin, who is working with a rescue horse named Raphael and is starting riding lessons, who wrote, “Thank you so much for the beautiful riding gear! Trying to enter the horse world without any real background is very intimidating, and incredibly expensive. diving off a horse, I’m happy to have protection in case I fall. I’m eternally grateful.” Recently, The Rider’s Closet also responded to a call from the Girl Scouts of West Central Florida who needed clothes and gear for their scouts and working students. GSWCF equine program director, Kristen Beran, writes: “I would like to personally thank you for making these girls’ experiences so incredibly special! They are all so very grateful for your generous donations. For some girls you have given a forever memory, and for others you have given inspiration and motivation to do and be so much more than a one-time rider.” For her part, but without looking personally for any accolades, Georgina says only that, “We’re deeply grateful for the opportunity to make competitive and noncompetitive riding more accessible to equestrians of every age, and at all levels of the sport.” Georgina also serves on the Board of the United States Equestrian Team Foundation and the Hampton Classic Horse Show. And Georgina has co-authored four young-adult novels, with Bloomsbury publishing, about the equestrian show circuit, and filled with positive messages for young adults: The A Circuit (2011); My Favorite Mistake (2012); Off Course (2012), and; Rein It In (2013), and; recently wrote the foreword for a book called Her Horse about celebrating the relationship between humans and equines.

GEORGINA BLOOMBERG

Georgina is, quite essentially, and to say the least, an equestrian. But she’s more than just one of the A-listers in the Wellington-in-the-Winter set...she’s a determined and accomplished professional athlete! She started riding at age 4, competing at age 6, and won everything there was for a kid to win, including the United States Equestrian Team’s (USET) Talent Derby at the age of 18, and their Individual Gold Medal at the age of 20. She turned pro at 21, and won the USET’s prestigious Maxine Beard Award. She’s been a winning member of U.S. teams competing all over the world and has herself earned numerous prize-monied wins at prestigious events such as the WEF Challenge Cup, the Empire State Grand Prix, the Bluegrass Festival Grand Prix, the Winter Equestrian Festival, the Longines FEI Jumping Nations Cup of the United States of America, and the Hampton Classic Horse Show.

In 2016, she started as an owner and rider of Team Miami Glory in the newly formed Global Champions League (GCL), and in 2018 she founded and started to ride for the GCL’s New York Empire. She promoted the 2019 Longines GCL Tour Finals which took place in New York City, and has several ongoing corporate sponsors for the New York Empire and her individual endeavors, including CWD Saddles, Heritage Gloves, Mane ‘n Tail, Samshield, Technogym, Sam Edelman, and Triple Crown Custom. Georgina competes in about twenty to thirty events a year, including all the personal fitness and training that top-level equestrian sport requires, and the incredible communication, cooperation and production involved in training and transporting the horses, and having them ready to compete.

GEORGINA BLOOMBERG

GEORGINA BLOOMBERG Still, even with all the equestrian awards and glory, Georgina says, candidly, that, “I’ve done really well in this sport, and I really enjoy competing at the highest level. ...But I haven’t made it to the Olympics yet, and that’s the ultimate. I was born with a congenital problem with my spine which, combined with two fractures from two separate falls off of horses, I required a pretty major surgery in 2011, ...and that’s been a lot to overcome in general, and has interfered with my chance to go to the Olympics. And in equestrian Olympic sports, somewhat uniquely, you qualify and compete with your horse as a part of your team. So you need the Olympic-quality horse, and then you and the horse have to be healthy, and peaking, at just the right time - and that just hasn’t happened for me. Don’t get me wrong, my riding has been very fulfilling. But the Olympics would be special.”

And Jasper is already riding and competing, and showing some early promise in shows around Wellington and North Salem, on a diminutive pony named Fairytales. Jasper splits his time between schools in Florida and New York. And Georgina reports, “So far, he loves the competition. He took to riding naturally and is more focused at this age than I ever was. I think it’s great for self-confidence and teaching discipline and responsibility, and I’ll support him as far as he wants to take it.”

Georgina’s estate in North Salem is remarkably comfortable. To be sure, the endless paddocks and manicured grounds, and the antique white wooden farmhouse and stone outbuildings, all with a majestic sunset view, are idyllic. And everything about the place is manicured and refined.

But the mood around the property is more that of a working horse farm than a millionaire’s - or billionaire’s - mansion.

The Gotham North Estate previously belonged to a circus and this long dirt pathway that leads from the front half of the property to the back half where now there are paddocks and accommodations for most of the rescue animals was previously used as a walkway for circus elephants to get their exercise when they were away from performing! 66

The house and guest house interiors are downright homey. The living room is a mish-mosh of older furniture, with the only hint of Bloomberg being a couple of leatherbound black-and-white family photo albums sitting inconspicuously on a corner table. Georgina’s dogs run the roost - down to poochprotecting upholstery in the family room. But it’s clear that the main function and purpose of the place is as a healthy home for Jasper and their rescue animals. “Gotham North is perfect for us. I like North Salem, and all the local riding trails, and the great restaurants, and getting the chance to spend time with all my friends in the area. It still feels like pure country, without all J U L Y / A U G U of S T the 2 0 Hamptons 2 1 the sophistication or even Wellington, and it’s a summer wonderland for Jasper.”

GEORGINA BLOOMBERG The 16,480 square foot working barn at ‘Gotham North’ - three or four times the size of the main house - is impressive not only in size, but in quality and breadth of operation. The barn includes facilities to house about 16 horses and the place is busy boarding and training: Georgina’s dozen-or-so rides, including one of Georgina’s favorites, a massive and gorgeous white speckled horse, named ‘Crown’; Jasper’s pony; horses being trained by rider and trainer friends of Georgina who tenant there, and; the rescue horses Georgina fosters.

“When we’re in North Salem, we get to have a lot of time with my Mom, who lives in Bedford, and my Sister, Emma, who lives in Armonk. And my Dad simply adores Jasper...and visa versa...and we get to spend time together here. Although my Dad does get a little uncomfortable around all the animals - and I chide him it’s because it’s the one thing he knows right away he can’t control,” Georgina says warmly. “I’ve always considered Northern Westchester to be home. I went to Spence, and then NYU, and we had a life in Manhattan, but we always had our home in Armonk. I feel like I grew up around here, riding at the local stables and competing in all the local events, and roaming around feeling free and having fun. Life is good here!”

At home with Jasper in North Salem, at Gotham North, Georgina is herself. Mom. Athlete. Philanthropist. Equestrian. Local.

TWO LOCAL THERAPEUTIC HORSEMANSHIP BARNS OFFER EXCEPTIONAL EQUINE THERAPY

BY Natasha Tarasov (of The Horse Connection) What is now called Equine Assisted Services (EAS) actually dates back to when horses were used for therapeutic riding during the Greek Empire. Hippocrates, known as the Father of Medicine, wrote around 400 B.C. that, “Riding in clean air strengthens body muscles and keeps them in good form”. And in more recent history, therapeutic horsemanship gained popularity in Scandinavia in response to a Polio outbreak. Today, there are thousands of therapeutic horsemanship centers around the world; approximately 800 in the United States that are certified by the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship, International (PATH, Intl.); including only 259 centers that hold the designation of PATH Accredited Center - based

on compliance with the highest set of best practices in all facets of the organization, and; two of those premiere Accredited Centers - New Canaan Mounted Troop and Endeavor Therapeutic Horsemanship - are local! EAS includes both recreational activities and clinical services. Recreational activities include instructing ground horsemanship and riding, for those with a wide variety of needs, and equine assisted learning involves adapting traditional classroom activities to the sensory rich learning environment of the barn. Clinical services include physical therapists, speech language pathologists, occupational therapists, and equine assisted psychotherapy - all partnered with the horses, on ground or on horseback.

NEW CANAAN MOUNTED TROOP

From Caroleigh Evarts, NCMT’s Therapeutic Program Director:

New Canaan Mounted Troop (NCMT), located at 22 Carter Street in New Canaan, is a 501(c)(3) not-forprofit, founded in 1939, with the core mission of “... building leadership, responsibility and confidence in youth through sound horsemanship”. In 2012, NCMT began Super Troopers, a therapeutic program for individuals, ages 4 and older, with a range of cognitive, emotional and developmental disabilities, expanding the NCMT mission to include “...enriching the lives of individuals with special needs through equine-assisted activities”. NCMT has 25 donated horses and its facilities include 30 indoor barn stalls, outdoor riding rings, and 9 paddocks. Their ‘Super Troopers’ program offers adaptive riding and equine care lessons taught by PATH Intl certified instructors. Programming involves 121 Super Troopers which is slightly higher than the number of Troopers, and includes over 500 adaptive riding and equine care lessons a year! (For Troopers, NCMT offers beginner through advanced rider lessons and middle and high school Interscholastic Equestrian Association riding teams, and provides over 780 horsemanship group lessons annually.)

We have many children and adult students in our adaptive riding and equine care programs at NCMT who, for various reasons, have great difficulty connecting with their families, friends, and community. Our instructors have witnessed time and again the power of the horse-and-human connection that serves as a conduit of communication to the world around them. The self-confidence and joy our students experience with our horses is a privilege to witness and be a part of. This is the best of what we do. Inspiration comes from the horses themselves, full of magic and grace, taking full advantage of a second chance at a happy life after they are donated to the program. And, with great meaning and potentially life-changing purpose, inspiration comes from each Super Trooper – who proudly learns the pride of caring for a horse, in a world where he or she is usually the one who needs help. It’s all about acceptance, inclusivity and unconditional love - and it works.

From NCMT Super Trooper mom, Judi Anders, who lives in New Canaan with her husband and four children: More than a few times, my son, Will Anders, has arrived at Super Troopers in the throes of what I call a ‘grumpy day’. Will, now 20, has low-functioning Autism, is non-verbal and suffers medical issues that too often cause him discomfort. But no matter how tough the day has been, Will becomes a different child at the barn. Mounted Troop has just changed him. Will is not always the happiest guy, but he lights up when he is there. He’s developing a sense of purpose, and a connection with animals on an emotional level, that he hasn’t had with people because language gets in the way. During his Super Trooper classes - which he has attended twice a week over the past four years - Will has learned to help take care of the horses and ponies that fill NCMT’s stalls. On a typical day, volunteers may help him build a relationship with the animals by grooming and stroking their soft coats, or subtly get him to exercise as he happily pushes a wheelbarrow full of hay from paddock to paddock to feed his fourlegged friends. He just goes right into the stall and hugs them...and the horses hug him right back. It’s made us see him in a different light and feel hopeful

about his future. NCMT has been so inspiring for Will, I’m convinced that he could have a happy life working on a farm when he is older. From Super Trooper mom, Debbie Smith, who lives in New Canaan with her family: My son, Blaine Smith, now 7 years old, is Autistic. Becoming a Super Trooper at 4 years of age, for Blaine, was, simply put, one of the best calls I’ve ever made. The powerful benefits of the program at NCMT, has provided a sense of hope that anything is possible. Our first conversation, back in 2018, with Caroleigh Evarts, was a lightbulb moment. It wasn’t just the expert knowledge she shared about the benefits of equine-assisted activities – it was the sincere interest she had to help Blaine and make a difference in his life. Three years later, we can’t imagine life without ‘Miss Caroleigh’ and all the wonderful volunteers and team members at NCMT - who have Blaine’s best interest at heart. They get as excited as we do when he’s conquered a new task and done something for the first time – like brushing Spicy Pony, a sweet-natured mare, on both sides of her body.

HORSES HELP ENDEAVOR THERAPEUTIC HORSEMANSHIP Endeavor, located at 556 Croton Lake Road in Bedford Corners, is a 501(c)(3) founded in 2014, which offers children and adults: Equine Assisted Learning, Residential Youth Horsemanship, Therapeutic Horsemanship, EAGALA Therapy with a special program for Veterans, and various clinical services, including Equine Assisted Therapy and Physical Therapy.

accepted and loved by the incredible staff and volunteers. We are grateful for Endeavor and for the Charlie Rose Scholarship that helps Alec continue to ride. For residential youth, Endeavor partners with local residential facilities to support the efforts for positive youth development to the areas most vulnerable young men and women due a variety of factors including poverty, racism, mental health diagnosis, and histories of trauma, or because their home environments are not suitable for them, either because of the nature of their disability or because of abuse and neglect. At Endeavor, they work on developing empathy, growing comfortable with connection and attachment, and learning to read body signals; skills that are not only important for working with horses but that the youth will use with their families and each other. Staff at Endeavor’s partnering agencies report measurable and marked progress in emotion management, ability to self-soothe, positive response to change, and increased levels of engagement.

While the programs for physical therapy or therapeutic horsemanship look a lot different than the programs for residential youth, and likewise for veterans, Endeavor’s commitment to enriching, inspiring, and empowering all those that come on site stays consistent. Endeavor’s therapeutic horsemanship, with PATH certified instructors, meets the unique needs of each rider. Even just saddling up the horse is an opportunity to work on fine motor skills, and riding involves following instruction, communication with the instructor and with the horse, a physical and aural connection with the horse, and developing a sense of self.

From Barbara Morris from Lincoln Hall Boys Haven: Lincoln Hall found a wonderful friend in Endeavor. Our youth have been going to Endeavor for a number of years, thanks to the generosity of Changing Leads. The Endeavor staff has been incredible with our Lincoln Hall youth. They seem to know exactly what our young men need, and our students respond so positively to each of them. Our relationship with Endeavor has been such a gift to Lincoln Hall.

From program parent, Amy Rosenberg: Endeavor is an incredibly special place for our son, Alec, and for our family. Alec has Mild Diplegic Cerebral Palsy, which affects his legs and core muscles. He started riding therapeutically at 2 and ½ years old - before he could walk. Very soon after he started riding lessons, he was suddenly able to do things like lift his leg to get into the bathtub. Eventually he walked independently, and we consider his therapeutic riding as a very significant reason. Alec is 9 now, and he’s been doing adaptive riding. His human and equine friends at Endeavor are a big part of his sense of self in this world which unfortunately isn’t always accepting of difference. Alec has experienced bullying from some of his peers at school for not being as fast or as adept as them on the soccer field or running track. Riding and Endeavor provide a counterbalance. It is an activity that is Alec’s own, and that he takes a lot of pride in being accomplished at. He loves helping out at the farm in any way. Endeavor is an oasis where he is

Most of our boys have never been around horses before getting to Endeavor, but they are eager to learn about the Endeavor horses, and the incredible bond that some of our youth form with the Endeavor horses is truly transformational. One Lincoln Hall student with a history of abuse had been struggling with behavioral and anger issues. He wanted to go to Endeavor, and he modified his negative behavior to earn the privilege of going. From the first moment this youth met ‘Pearl’, there was an incredible connection. He was so gentle with Pearl and, almost immediately, Pearl seemed to connect with him too. The young man started to focus on positive behavior at Lincoln Hall so that he could see Pearl every week. The connection helped this youth

to know the magic of feeling safe while making an emotional connection...something he had never known before. Many of our Endeavor/Lincoln Hall youth return home to difficult circumstances. It’s amazing to hear from them, asking for a photo of ‘my horse’ whether it be Maple, Ford, Pearl, or any of the other horses our youth work with at Endeavor. This connection is one of the most valuable parts of the Endeavor Experience for our youth. To be able to make a caring, loving, respectful, positive, emotional connection with these amazing horses is the gift of a lifetime for many of our youth. They learn so much about communicating with and caring for the beautiful Endeavor horses. They are introduced to a world that they never knew existed, and they truly love it. Many of them carry this memory with them when they return home, and it often sustains them in difficult times. The Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association (EAGALA) is an experiential equine assisted therapy that has been demonstrated to be particularly effective with those who have experienced trauma. Endeavor provides EAGALA for Veterans, with a mental health specialist and an equine specialist always present at each session, at no charge.

From U.S. Army Veteran participating from the PTSD unit at the VA Montrose I’m a Veteran of 13 years of service, with 3 combat tours to Iraq. I was awarded 3 Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star of Valor for my actions during service. But when I returned to the U.S., I held away from people and tried to not get close to anyone or anything. Endeavor changed all that! When I was there dealing with the horses, I had to learn to be mindful, calm, steady, and smooth. I never got to learn the trauma each horse had gone through before getting to Endeavor, but it seemed like we understood each other’s pain and came to understand what makes each other tick. Working with Pearl, I learned to feel again. As I worked beside her I could feel her every move, every breath, and every gaze. ...And I felt like she could see right into my very soul. I learned how pain locked us each up. The relationship helped me clear my mind. Endeavor helped me through the struggle of dealing with the trauma of combat. I am truly grateful for Endeavor and your staff, and if there is anything I can ever do for you or your program, please let me know. You all are in my thoughts and I truly won’t forget about this. I believe this program can help anyone who it touches and is a fantastic tool for a Veteran’s recovery.

ARMONK

MASTERPIECE From the tree-lined approach framing this massive masterpiece, to every detail inside, this barn is absolutely spectacular. The Artemis Farm is in an extremely private setting in one of the most exclusive and sought after gated communities in America.

The main entrance to the barn leads directly to a tack room filled with saddles and bridles, and of course, lots of medals and trophies. Tucked neatly behind is an entire apartment with no detail spared; an office, bathroom, viewing room with a fireplace facing the indoor arena, and a bedroom. This barn has many small yet elegant details that are not replicated in many barns you see today.

This impressive 16-stall barn is part of an expansive farm in Armonk, and home to multiple Olympic horses and riders. The barn is shaped around a center courtyard with a main cross aisle, and a ramp in the back connects the facility to a massive indoor riding ring with intricate ceiling detailing and loads of natural light flowing in. During B&NC Mag’s visit, we watched as gorgeous horses were worked-out on horse treadmills, and then groomed in showers on either end of the barn.

This contemporary stable is located on a fully functional farm with beautiful pastures, woodlands, and over 70 acres of land. The farm uses regenerative farming techniques, and horses are an integral component of the day-to-day on the property. This equestrian facility was added just three years ago, designed to fit into the landscape and compliment the architecture of the historic barn that was already on the premises, and is an internationally recognized training facility. The barn has 14-stalls with a detached heated indoor riding ring and all the amenities of a modern stateof-the-art equestrian barn. The stable and the indoor both have very open designs with no second floor over the stalls to allow for optimal light and air flow and there are a lot of functional windows throughout both the stables and indoor ring that allow for air flow and natural light.

OLD TOWN BARNS Founder Dave Zublin started Old Town Barns over three decades ago with a promise to honor the traditions of craftsmanship, reliability, and durability. He started out as a one-man crew, handling construction during the day and attending to the operational side of the business at night. Dave’s work ethic earned him a reputation for quality, dependability, and dedication, the three guiding principles of Old Town Barns today. Today, Dave’s son, Dylan Zublin, carries on the family tradition of Old Town Barns. Dylan has a background in architecture and years of experience designing and building equestrian facilities, barns, garages, riding arenas, and residences. He has led Old Town Barns into its current chapter, overseeing several in-house construction crews, designers, draftsmen, project managers, and supervisors.

Located in the heart of New Canaan, the New Canaan Racquet Club (NCRC) offers a comprehensive junior tennis program; taking young players from introduction to the highest level of competition 1 0100 0

When Anthony Domino, Tom Ayoub and Fred Afragola, three local, tennis and fitness enthusiasts and successful businessmen, purchased the New Canaan Racquet Club in 2017, the facility and the programming were, plainly put, tired. They were determined to make an investment in the local community, with the intention of preserving and restoring what has always been a family-oriented club and a community resource for tennis and exercise. The three immediately transformed the physical condition of the space: resurfacing the courts with Procushion; adding solar and upgraded heating and cooling, and; creating the state-of-the-art Halo fitness studio and Hustle training center on the ground floor. They also hired me, to revitalize programming, hire and train a personable and engaging staff, and create a new culture of service - all while building a best-in-class junior development tennis program. Today, the NCRC is a vibrant facility with a full schedule of adult tennis and pickleball ball lessons, clinics, team play, rentals, open play and tournaments. NCRC now has over 300 youths, ages 3-18, actively engaged in tennis programming, with a solid group of teenage athletes positioned to play collegiate tennis, and a coaching staff capable of getting them there. The remainder of the facility is filled with high performance amenities, including a wide range of strength and conditioning opportunities, physical therapy, on-site doctors, health and wellness services of every kind, and the aforementioned Halo Fitness Center. NCRC boasts 6 tennis courts and 4 pickleball courts, and frequently hosts tournaments to both disciplines that attract hundreds of players. As our General Manager, Geoff Jadgfeld, who is also one of our fully certified United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) and PTR Teaching Professionals, puts it, “The vibe at the club is welcoming and happy!”.

The NCRC is one of the only few, fully-compliant United States Tennis Association (USTA) programs in Connecticut that adheres to the junior tennis development governing guidelines and is aligned to the USTA’s central junior tennis programming themes of: • Including the youngest players early and often, and instilling a foundational understanding and comfort with the sport, while promoting fundamentals of the game. • Teaching pre-teen and teenage groups to play at the recreational level and encouraging team communication and sportsmanship; then providing training and coaching to support competitive development. While technique and performance are still relevant goals, today’s programs are designed to promote interest and participation in the sport first and foremost, with a long-term view on each player’s progress over time.

Carlos Espinoza is NCRC’s 10 & Under and Recreational Player Development Director. Espinoza’s Red Robins classes get toddlers moving, balanced, and working on hand-eye coordination. Kids play with red, orange and green dot low-compression tennis balls that bounce lower and move slower, use shorter-length racquets, and play on ageappropriate, smaller-size courts. These classes instill in our youngest players the importance of working cooperatively with their classmates as partners. “Our system of having the kids always hitting with each other promotes continuous engagement. After all, we want them to be able to play with their peers, not to only be able to play with a professional. Our kids are learning in a fun, games based, and progressive manner. We focus on the youngest kids learning to serve, rally and keep score, and on maximizing the fun and enjoyment of playing games. We advance players based on skill as well as age.” Espinoza explains. As young kids progress, Club Pathway programs are designed to turn youngsters into intermediate tennis players, and have fun learning to play at the recreational level. Espinoza explains, “Helping our kids learn how to play, and to have fun doing it, is extremely rewarding. The kids build self-confidence and improve athletic skills, but the best part is seeing their smiles of enjoyment and satisfaction as they play together. I feel like we are giving the kids a real life long gift.” Players who consistently show commitment to the sport and are interested in taking their participation to a more competitive level are welcome to participate in the NCRC’s new high-performance academy, known as “The Pack”, for players 9-18 years old. 102

Ryan Ginley, NCRC’s Senior Director of Player Development and leader of The Pack explains, “The Pack is about community, culture, and team. We run it like a varsity high school or college team. Everyone here is part of something bigger. We teach leadership through helping each other to develop the toughness needed to handle any situation. Tennis is typically an individual sport, and that can make the competitive experience difficult, uncomfortable, or even overwhelming for some individuals, regardless of their level. We foster individual tenacity and achievement, but in a team environment, where each athlete feels a sense of belonging, responsibility, and fellowship. Of course, it is our goal for every teenage player who trains with The Pack to play for their high school team and have a chance to experience college tennis if they so desire.” Ginley has over 20 years of experience coaching high performing players, and has a track record of helping players ultimately achieve flourishing college tennis careers, #1 collegiate rankings, top national rankings, USTA national titles, and NCAA championships. Ginley’s older daughter, Ellyse Hamlin, was a former #1 ranked player in the US in both juniors and college tennis, and she is currently the assistant women’s coach at Yale. Among many others, Ginley has been the developmental coach of Will Blumberg, a former #5 ITF World Ranked player, who played for UNC and was a 10-time NCAA All-American; Anna Rogers, a 5-time NCAA All-American at North Carolina State; and; Kimmy Guerin, #1 at Wake Forest, 4-time CT State Champion, and undefeated in high school. Ryan’s players have gone on to play at colleges all across the nation, including Duke, Yale, Penn, Dartmouth, Georgetown, Emory, Villanova, Boston College, Bowdoin, Fairfield, Indiana, Skidmore, Union, Hamilton, Bucknell, Quinnipiac and UConn. Ryan continues, “I believe in building complete tennis games, with skills to compete and win from all parts of the tennis court - and in life! I’m fully committed to helping individuals develop high character, motivation, and self-belief. I take a lot of pride in the fact that players I work with get better as they get older, both with their tennis and as people. I’m thrilled to be a part of their high school, college, and even lifelong success and enjoyment.”

Ryan’s assistant coach, Erin Gildea, was formerly the Varsity coach at New Canaan High School and works hard to cultivate strong relationships with many of the area’s other high school coaches and players. Her background coaching high school locally is an extra benefit in preparing players for local competition, and her connection to the community allows the staff an extra measure of staying connected with what is happening with the players during the season and while off-court. NCRC has forged a strong relationship with St. Luke’s School in New Canaan, and is partnering in 2021 to run a portion of the NCRC High Performance Program at St. Luke’s outdoor facility. Gildea says about The Pack: “The goal is to have our players, parents, coaches and staff, all know that they are part of something special. Everyone contributes and supports the common goals and values instilled in all players at NCRC.” J U LY / A U G U S T

One young star and shining example of The Pack’s success, is 14-year old New Canaanite, Liza Sieghart, who just played Varsity tennis for St. Luke’s in her freshman year, and is already being considered a hot college prospect. About NCRC, Sieghart says, “I’m grateful to be training with The Pack and to have Ryan and Erin teaching and coaching me. I feel like I’m getting the best technical instruction and great game strategy, and like they can really help me to take my tennis game to the top level. I expect to play through high school and hope to play in college. But what I like best about The Pack is the way the coaches and the other players push me to be the best I can be as a person, as well as the best I can be as a tennis player. It’s a completely warm and supportive environment, and we’re a pretty tight group. I look forward to training each day, and I am happy to have Ryan and Erin in my corner.”

As things have shaped-up under the new ownership, NCRC has emerged as a first-class tennis and exercise facility with a premier junior tennis development program. One of the owners, Anthony Domino, says on behalf of his community-minded investment group, “We feel like we’ve managed to polish one of the New Canaan area’s crown jewels. Tennis is a great way to exercise, meet new friends, enjoy competition, and just have fun! NCRC and Halo Fitness are major resources for the community, which we’re pleased to be able to operate. We’re most proud of establishing a regionally-regarded junior development program. The sheer number of young kids participating is a good sign for the sport of tennis in general, and The Pack is the talk of the town! I imagine it won’t be long before we’re going to the U.S. Open to see one of the players who started and developed with us!”

Sterling Farms Golf Course Tops the Leaderboards BY John Byrne

108

BEDFORD & NEW CANAAN

The 6,423 yard, 18-hole, par 72, Sterling Farms Golf Course, located on Newfield Avenue in Stamford, is a storied championship venue that has, over five decades, amassed a room full of accolades, awards, ratings, rankings, and distinctions. Just last month, it was the site of the 22nd Westchester Public Links Championship, and hosted Sectional Qualifying for the 73rd MGA Public Links Championship. But while all of that is good and dandy, the real appeal of Sterling Farms is its incomparable value proposition. Even the pickiest of frugal golfers admit Sterling’s price to quality ratio is impossible to ignore, especially for a golf course whose layout never tires. And few will dispute Sterling’s unstoppable attention to detail when it comes to course

conditions, which are just stunning. Stamford Golf Authority Executive Director Paul Grillo, who runs Sterling Farms, puts it plainly: “We’re a public golf course with a private, country club feel...and with great rates! We’re certainly one of the best municipal golf courses in the tri-state area!”. Paul Grillo’s sentiments are readily echoed by others in the golf community. “Even though Sterling is a public course, it feels like being a member at a private country club”, says Jacob Ninan, a die-hard golfer and Sterling Farms Men’s Club (SFMC) member. “Just last week, I brought a guest from Redding Country Club who could not stop raving about the course. He went on and on about how ‘the greens are so spectacular’.” Bob Judge, president of the Hubbard Heights Men’s Club, adds that Sterling Farms,

The Sterling Farms bliss begins on the first tee, and never disappoints, as golfers route their way down, up, and across the 144 acres that were once a working dairy farm. Crafted in two starts - by area golf course architects Geoffrey Cornish, in 1969, and Robert McNeil, in 2005 - Sterling Farms’ 18 unique golf holes provide players of all skill levels a full challenge, but with plenty of opportunities to make their fair share of pars and birdies. The golf course includes five sets of tees to vary length, and offers a creative mix of runway and staggered tee boxes to reveal different sight lines and shot angles for golfers of all ilks.

“The first thing is inspired design, then sound specifications, then dedicated construction, and lastly the work of the golf course superintendent. Only he can make a golf course great forever.” - Geoffrey Cornish

When Sterling’s original course architect, Geoffrey Cornish, was asked what makes a golf course outstanding, he replied, “The first thing is inspired design, then sound specifications, then dedicated construction, and lastly the work of the golf course superintendent. Only he can make a golf course great forever.” And Sterling Farms’ Golf Course Superintendent, Michael Golden, strives to accomplish that feat each and every day. An impressive figure, Mike plays to a four handicap himself, and personally does all of the work he asks of his crew. Everyday he can be seen testing the greens for moisture, and syringing them to perfection; a habit he likely picked up when he worked at Stanwich Country Club in Greenwich. The better golfers notice his work: “I play a lot of local courses, including country clubs,” says SFMC 2020 Player of the Year Ryan Duggan, “and Sterling Farms has the best greens out of all of them!” and; SFMC board member and multiple past champion Bart Weissman adds: “I’ve been playing Sterling Farms for many many years, decades really. It remains one of the best public golf courses in the area. While not a long course, it does have a nice variety of long and short holes, with the par three holes being particularly difficult.”

110

BEDFORD & NEW CANAAN

Southern New England Women’s Golf Association President, and a past multiple champion of the Stamford City Amateur, Debbie Johnson knows Sterling Farms well, having played there for a long time. “The course is always in good shape, and I like that you can always find a game there, and the people that you play with - and the staff - are always so friendly! And I really enjoy the course layout. It makes you think, which is my favorite type of course to play.” And for many, Sterling Farms offers an even broader appeal... “The thing I love the most is the landscaping”, says Linda Colucci of the Stamford Women’s Golf Association’s (SWGA) 9-Holers. “No matter what time of year there is always something of interest. Right now the irises are in full bloom, and they are spectacular! In the spring there is a row of trees on the left side of the 17th green that sprinkles little white flower petals on you when you go by on the cart path. And now they’ve put a fountain in the middle of the water on 14, and it looks so pretty. I’ve put many of my balls in that water!”, she adds.

Sterling Farms is also home to the area’s only two-tiered 44-bay driving range, which avails golfers an opportunity to swing their clubs 365days a year, even at night, with 18 bays warmed up in the coldest weather - thanks to their newlyupdated, gas-powered, Space-Ray Cold Blocker infrared heaters. Situated adjacent to the driving range’s main structure, are open area tees, where PGA/LPGA Head Golf Professional Angela Aulenti and her staff of PGA Pros, Keith Handler, Kent Smith, and Chris LaPolice can work with golfers to improve their games. And if a golfer is looking to buy equipment, the Aulenti Fitting Studio leverages their wealth of instructional talent and the latest in launch monitor technology to gather both visual and data-driven inputs and make the most-informed equipment purchasing recommendations possible.

A few feet away are a practice bunker and chipping green, and next to them is the Sterling Farms Tennis Club, with its six multilayered Deco surface tennis courts. Within chipping distance is the first tee, the starter’s office, and the cart barn that garages and stages a shining fleet of Tesla-like EZ-GO “Elite Lithium Powertrain” golf carts used by golfers to speed themselves effortlessly around the golf course. “There are so many things I love about Sterling Farms”, says Melissa Lopez, an aspiring amateur and SWGA 9-Holer,

“everything about the place is charming. It’s like a private country club.”

RENWICK Bedford’s Brand-New-Brand In Women’s Golf Apparel BY Casey Kaplan I am one of about a half a million new pandemic-era golfers, and part of a surge in women taking up golf in recent years. During the pandemic it was a great way to stay social outside, and it’s definitely a fun and useful life-skill. And while it’s immediately clear that my only involvement with the LPGA Tour will be as a spectator, and I’ve actually yet to subject anyone outside my close circle to my short drives and crazywrong putts...I want to look good while I’m out there! For a girl like me, that’s about half of sports! To have a place where I could really get a chance to learn how to play and get out on the course to enjoy it, we joined Rockrimmon for the summer in 2020. I looked around in department stores, a few local sport shops, and in the club’s pro shop, and then online, and the selection for women’s golf clothes that are flattering and comfortable is: lacking. All I could find was tops that were either too square and heavy or too flashy for any refined use, and too-long skirts, and what looked to me like my grandfather’s shorts. So, after careful review of the club’s dress rules and in full compliance therewith, I dressed for my first lesson and day out on the course in a Nike Golf crew neck dri-fit top and white LuluLemon stretch-pants to below the knee, with my new pink and white Puma golf shoes. About fifteen minutes into my lesson, with me and the pro minding our own business on a nice sunny day, a manager of the club came over to interrupt, with the message that, ‘although your attire may be as required, some members having lunch spoke with the general manager and he’s asked me to ask you to please find some other attire’. Mortified, I retreated to the pro shop and purchased one of the matronly polyester skirts and one of the pro shop’s logoed tops, with the collar the manager had also ‘recommended’. Photos: Ally Moreo

Funny enough, when I started comparing my experience with other women, it turns out I’m far from the first with the same experience... finding nothing attractive and comfortable out there in women’s golf - or country club casual - attire. 116

Fore!

The Bedford-local Renwick sisters are playing through... and intend to revolutionize women’s golf apparel! Sarah and Pippa Renwick grew up golfing at Bedford Golf & Tennis Club, Ekwanok in Manchester, Vermont, and Westhampton, on Long Island, and the sisters always struggled with the same offering of old-fashioned, bulky, low-tech wear. Sarah explained, “We’re female golfers and we’ve been frustrated with what’s out there to wear. Wanting to look good, but also stay within the constraints of most clubs, and inspired by the look of classic men’s cotton polos, and embracing the motto at least when it comes to golf shirts that ‘A Collar Is Always Right’ - we created a timeless, comfortable and versatile shirt for women that works on the golf course or out on the town. Our central theme is being relaxed and natural. Our marketing embodies an effortless beauty and a type of happiness that comes from being yourself. We’re designing classic comfort and style.” Pippa and Sarah are no strangers to family business, and the family is about as quintessentially-Bedford as could be. Their parents, Missy and Jim, are the fourth-generation owners and operators at Renwick Real Estate, headquartered on the Bedford Green. Pippa went to West Patent Elementary and Fox Lane Middle School, before moving on to Greenwich Academy and the University of Virginia, and Sarah went to Bedford Village Elementary and Fox Lane Middle and High Schools, then Wake Forest University. And the Renwicks are multi-generational and active members of the Bedford Golf & Tennis Club, where Pippa and Sarah grew up golfing, along with their younger brother, Jamie, who’s a single digit handicap and still lives near Bedford.

117

And the sisters have a substantial, and directly-relatable, background building major clothing brands, with collective experience in ecommerce, product development, merchandising, inventory, business planning, brand building, and marketing. ...They have the chops to make this work. Pippa started in merchandising at J Crew after college and Sarah joined her working there two years later. Pippa’s career then included positions at Saks and Vineyard Vines; Sarah was the second employee at Draper James, Reese Witherspoon’s lifestyle and clothing brand, and had an instrumental role building out the brand and online presence. So when they came up with the idea for Renwick Golf, it seemed like a dream come true to be able to use their breadth of experience to build a family business.

The logo, featuring two ram heads, works artistically and carries a story and message that will resonate: the Renwick’s mom and grandmother have always worn ram head hoop earrings, as rams symbolize determination, action, initiative, and leadership; and the two ram heads in the logo represent Pippa and Sarah as sisters. And the sisters have the perfect look to be, kind of like Ralph Lauren, the face behind the brand, and they already have models with the right look to sell the merchandise.

The women explained that their Dad is known for always wearing a polo around - no matter the occasion: “For men, polos are something you can throw on and transition from work to 9 holes, straight to dinner, and never have to change. We wanted that too! So fashioned off of the striped polo we always saw our Dad wearing, we began talking about what would later become Renwick Golf.” Right off the tee, Pippa and Sarah have created a line of attractive, and much more complimentary, women’s polos as their flagship product, in a sleeveless, a short sleeve, and a long sleeve, and a classic polo dress. And they say that’s just the beginning for their brand! Renwick Golf launched in March of 2021, and the sisters already have plans to expand the line beyond their flagship polos to pants, a skort, and pullovers. Paddle and general resort-wear are next! Pippa’s golfer husband, Jack, 9-year old daughter Beatrice, and 7-year old son, Sam, and Sarah’s golfer husband, Shaun, and 4 and 3-year old boys Henry and Charlie, are all on board! “Not just on board, but all in!” Pippa remarks. “We’re fully self-funded and fully engaged in making Renwick work. All the inventory is at my house, we do all product handling and packaging ourselves, and we go to the post office twice a day to mail out orders. We’re personally managing all social media and digital marketing for the brand, and run our own ecommerce site, www.renwickgolf.com, where we’ve done about 90% of our business thus far.” And Sarah commented, “We knew the time was right for us to start a brand, and our families couldn’t be more supportive. I think Pippa and I are confident about what we’re doing both because we’re prepared, and because we had a really strong role model in our ‘mother knows best’ mom, who has always been an active and equal partner with our dad in the real estate business, and who also happens to be a former Club Champion at BGTC! Thanks in no small part to her, and our dad for being ‘woke’ before it was cool, we feel like we can build and run a business and be successful moms and wives all at the same time.

...And my pretty woke husband called me ‘Superwoman’ the other day after he took over a day of tasks that are normally mine!”

Initial uptake and immediate re-orders of the first offerings have been strong; the products look great, feel great, and wear great, and; Renwick fills a void in the underserved category of comfortable and attractive womens’ golf clothes. The shirts are priced between $75-$90, and the sisters are sourcing their customdesigned, highest quality, 100% ultra-soft pima cotton goods from Peru, and have started out with an array of attractive colors. The Renwicks have also managed to eschew having any retail operation, or building-out a salesforce for in-person wholesaling to the traditional market of ‘green grass’ golf club retailers, in favor of a digital and social marketing strategy and online sales. They’re still facing rounds of challenges that will come with continued product expansion and sales growth, but it seems their new Renwick brand is a winner! The brand has already been recognized by Ashley Mayo of Golf.com and in Forbes Magazine, and even in The New York Post. The sisters are working with selected influencers, and advertising in golf.com and golfdigest. com to grow brand awareness, and are using the Renwick Facebook and Instagram to build community. And, already into their fourth bulk order of merchandise from the manufacturer, the sisters are running fast to keep up with demand. Pippa sums it up by saying, “Now we - and all women - have the perfect and perfectly comfortable thing to put on. We’re really proud to be branding the Renwick name, and to be delivering a top quality product.”

Take note: Renwick is joining Ralph on the Bedford Brand Leaderboard!

The Best Breast Care You Can Get… And it’s Right in Your Community World-Class, Holistic Breast Care Close to Home Should you need it, you will find today’s most advanced and complete breast care right here in Westchester. “Being part of the Northwell Health team in Westchester is hugely beneficial for my patients,” says Dr. Andrew Ashikari, Breast Cancer Surgeon at Northern Westchester Hospital and Phelps Hospital. “As a patient here, you can expect high-quality care, forward thinking innovations, access to the latest clinical trials and so much more. We’re really bringing the best of everything to our patients. It’s the best breast care you can get, and it’s right here in your community.” From your very first visit, breast experts at both hospitals are focused on providing the best oncologic care: surgical, medical, and radiation, and also ensuring that you are cared for holistically – physically, emotionally and mentally.

The Best Care Begins with Screening “Screening is the best tool we have to fight breast cancer,” says Dr. Alice Police, who leads the Breast Care Program in Westchester. “Because of COVID-19, many women are skipping their mammograms. It’s important to get your mammo, so we can catch breast cancer at its earliest and most treatable stage. We’ve put maximum safety measures in place to prevent exposure to the coronavirus of anyone who comes to the Hospital.”

Advanced Treatment and Improved Quality of Life All patients at the Northwell Health Breast Care Program in Westchester have access to advanced treatments that not only deliver the best possible clinical outcomes, but also have an important positive impact on overall well-being. For example, Intra-Operative Radiation Therapy delivers a single dose of radiation directly to the tumor site during surgery for early-stage breast cancers that have not spread. This allows the patient to skip the traditional four-to-six-and-a-half-week course of external beam radiation after surgery. “Patients don’t need to go back and forth to the hospital five days a week. Think about how that benefits anyone’s hectic schedule,” states Dr. Andrew Ashikari. J U LY / A U G U S T

Aesthetics Matter One advanced technique offered in Westchester – the nipple-sparing mastectomy – offers superior cosmetic results over a mastectomy, with an equally positive emotional impact. “One of the reasons I joined Northwell Health in Westchester,” says Dr. Ashikari, “is because both Northern Westchester Hospital and Phelps Hospital believe in caring for women holistically. These hospitals are committed to ensuring that a woman feels confident after undergoing surgery for breast cancer.”

Clinical Trials “As a patient here, you have access to the latest clinical trials,” says Dr. Pond Kelemen, Breast Surgeon at Phelps Hospital and Northern Westchester Hospital. “In the trials, we analyze treatments to see if survival rates are improving, but we also study how our patients feel. How is your level of confidence and your physical and emotional well-being? All are so important.”

The Bruce and Andrea Yablon Cancer Health and Wellness Program “All our breast cancer patients are welcome at the Bruce and Andrea Yablon Cancer Health and Wellness Program,” says Dr. Ranjana Chaterji, Breast Surgeon at Northern Westchester Hospital. “The program offers free therapies that relieve stress and anxiety that you may feel from receiving a cancer diagnosis and/or treatment.” Reiki healing, acupuncture, aromatherapy, guided imagery, oncology medical massage, and reflexology are some of the treatments offered. Patients also benefit from free health coaching, fitness and exercise plans, pastoral care, and nutrition counseling. “It’s an honor to be able to offer my patients these services.”

A HOME on the 16TH HOLE

While building a new home is exciting, it’s rare to hear it recounted with a nostalgic fondness. But that’s just the way the Riley family sounds when they recount the construction of their home on the 16th hole of the Bedford Golf & Tennis Club.

The property originally belonged to longtime Bedford resident Tatiana Lowe, who built the house with her husband, James, in 1953. Marcy and Mike Riley were enthusiastic members at BGTC, and had often commented how great it would be to live on that spot--right on the fairway of one of their favorite holes! When the property hit the market for the first time, the Rileys knew it would be the ideal setting for their family’s happily-ever-after! The Riley’s toured the house and property and put a bid in immediately, knowing full well they would have to rebuild. The couple immediately brought in a trusted local developer and contractor, Mark Mosolino (also known as Max), to take on their renovation and rebuild. “The old colonial had some features we liked, but it had small rooms and just wasn’t suited to our lifestyle. Even though Mark advised us it would be a bit less expensive, and quicker, to do a teardown, we decided to keep about three-quarters of the old bones of the house, including a family room and fireplace, which is now Mike’s office, and to do what still really amounted to a full build to get the new house, like adding on the kitchen and family room space.” Marcy explains. J U LY / A U G U S T

2 0 2 1

BY Jacqueline deMontravel “During the course of the project, with about five months left to go, we moved the whole family - our three kids - then 17, 15, and 13 - and our dog, Mr. Wigglesworth, into the one-bedroom guesthouse cottage on the property, to rideout however long the construction was going to take. It was a tight squeeze, but made the project move along really quickly - given that we were on site for decisions during the work day and at night. Beyond our familiarity with Mark Mosolino’s excellent work and his reputation for getting things done on budget, was our confidence in his estimate that the job would take 12 to 14 months, and no longer. We felt like we were all embarking on a project together and hoped the journey would be rewarded in making the house perfect for us and getting exactly what we wanted - done on time!”

16TH HOLE “My method is to focus right up front on the clients desires and expectations.” Mosolino explains. “I want to understand what the client wants and then fulfill their expectations. I’m clear about what’s achievable and what’s not, and about the cost to make it happen, then it’s my mission to deliver, not just on time and on budget, but to deliver on the client’s vision.” Mosolino continues, “The Rileys wanted a comfortable space, with a large family room adjacent to the kitchen, a finished basement, and a great flow to the outdoors. When we were planning, they added a special room for the kids to hangout. And they were really great about picking things like kitchen

cabinets, tile and plumbing fixtures, so there was no hold-up for those items during the build. I believe one of the keys to getting things done on time is moving at a smooth and steady pace, and not having to rush. I really don’t change my trades much. I use the same excavator, electrician, plumber, etcetera, on project after project, which works to keep things going on schedule, improves the integration of different components of the project, and helps to ensure the ultimate quality of the finished job. We got the project done in just under a year, and I believe the Rileys are entirely pleased with the product I delivered.”

The family opted for a green Scalamandre fabric for a

punch of color on the family room window seats.

AT HOME The Rileys chose Elizabeth Blaney to do the interior design, and having her involved from the outset of the build helped with the house being ready for move-in right after Mosolino completed the construction. Blaney did the legwork sourcing materials and started implementing designs, like the pin-worthy cubbies in the mudroom and the

Aquagrill-inspired cobalt-colored bar,

during the course of the build. For the bar, for instance, she took inventory of some of the Riley’s family treasures, including a vintage Prohibition print and a Winston Churchill pitcher and clock, and pre-planned how the items would be featured in front of a fabulous gilded and marbleized backsplash mirror. Blaney comments, “We all value and love antiques, and especially those things that have been passed down from family. We worked together to create a space that was fresh, colorful, playful, inviting and functional, by using treasured pieces, while incorporating transitional and contemporary touches throughout the house. The Riley’s home looks like it has been there for a hundred years, but with all the amenities and perks of being new.”

16TH HOLE Now comfortably ensconced in the residence, the Rileys are enjoying life on the back nine. The house works for them and their lifestyle, and has become the regular meeting place for all the kids’ friends. And the backyard is the Riley’s outdoor oasis. In what has become a Riley trademark, they stock a ‘NY GIANTS’ cooler for thirsty BGTC members playing the 16th to grab a beer on the way by.

Mosolino commented, “I treat every customer like they’re a good friend. Getting things done right, and on budget, is my mission, and I feel the same sense of duty and responsibility no matter the client. I get that the job completion date was really important to the Rileys. But I’m getting it done on time whether the client emphasized the point or not. I take great pride in customer satisfaction, and I do what it takes to earn it.”

And Mike Riley sums it up by saying, “Working with Mosolino was a pleasure. He did everything he promised and gave us exactly what we wanted. I’m thrilled with our house and, although we’ve got no plans to move, we’d use Mark again, without hesitation. Quality character. Quality work.”

The Longest PGA CHAMPIONSHIP Venue in History... By Rob Labritz, PGA

...The 2021 PGA CHAMPIONSHIP, played at the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Resort, in South Carolina. This course is a tremendous test of golf! It’s longer than the famed Bethpage Black on Long Island, and since it’s right on the ocean, the wind is a constant factor. And can blow like a hurricane. Average days are when the winds blow between 15 and 20 miles per hour. The PGA Championship is one of golf ’s four Major Championships, and qualifying for the event is a long process that involves two tournaments to secure a spot in the field. I played a total of seven rounds to qualify. Three of them locally, and four of them at the PGA Professional National Championship, which was held this year at the PGA Village Wanamaker and Ryder Golf courses, in Port Saint Lucie, Florida. The top 20 finishers from the PGA Professional National Championship secure their spot in the field at the PGA Championship. The PGA Championship is run by the PGA of America, an association that governs the 30,000 PGA Club Professionals all over the world. We have only 20 spots in the field that allow us to compete with the world’s best golfers! It’s special to be there, and to represent all my fellow PGA Professionals who grow the game every day! I qualified in April, by placing tied for eighth at the PGA Professional National Championship. This PGA Championship marks the 8th time I’ve qualified to play - the record for any PGA Professional is 12 - and, as I approach 50 years old, my third PGA Championship in successive years. I’ve twice been the low scoring PGA Club Professional at the PGA Championship, at Whistling Straits in 2010, and in 2019 at Bethpage Black on Long Island!... But my view of those ‘first place’ finishes is that...well...I was tied for 60th at Bethpage and that means there were still 59 touring pros who turned in better scores than I did. I‘m the Director of Golf at GlenArbor Golf Club in Bedford Hills, have been there for the past 21 years, and I’m grateful to be an integral asset to what is one of the finest golf operations anywhere. But I still like to compete at the highest level in golf! Last year, during Covid and with no crowds, at Harding Park in San Francisco - as I diaried in the September/October issue of Bedford & New Canaan Magazine - I missed the cut. ...So I’m looking to score a little better this year! ...And this year, on top of seeing how my game stacks up against the top players in the world, it’s also about how my game stacks up against one of the best venues Kiawah - in major championship conditions.

Sunday

, I arrived alone via JetBlue and picked up my courtesy Cadillac at the airport. What a nice ride. Since I was vaccinated in March a Covid test was not mandatory. I wish I knew this last night - before I jammed one of those swabs way up my nose to make sure I was clear. Off to my home for the week. One of my GlenArbor members owns a beautiful home in Kiawah and graciously offered it to me and my team this week. So blessed to have such support. I’ll head there first, get moved in, and then off to the course. More writing to come..... Off to the course to get a feel for the week before the crowds arrive. It’s nice to get there a little early, before the crowds, to get a feel for the course and layout of player dining, the practice facilities, and the restrooms (this is an important one as I drink a ton of water). Two of my instructors, Tom Willson and Bill Davis, are here with me this week. They arrived early as well to ‘dial’ me in for the week. It’s great to have 134

I’ve played the Ocean Course at Kiawah in each of the last 5 years,

in the Kiawah Professional/Member Championship, so I do have some experience on the course. But from 6700 yards? them here. It’s funny, I consider myself a hybrid golf professional. I play tournament golf, and I coach players of all skill levels and run an 18 hole private golf facility. I can help anyone with their game, but seeing flaws in my own swing is non-existent. Go figure out that one! I played the front 9 holes with PGA Professionals Ben Cook and Tyler Collet. The course is extremely long. It’s playing 7800 yards, and the wind makes it play much longer. All of the practice tees are on the back portion of the very back tee box. Thank goodness I still have my length and can carry the ball 300 yards. Ben and Tyler are both in their 20’s, so to see this 49 year old body keep up with the 20 somethings, that’s a credit to my trainer, Curtis Jackson, my Peloton Tread, and my drive to stay in the best shape possible. An athletic dad bod! It was great to see 9 holes of the course. The condition of the course was pristine. The greatest pre-tournament prep. Holy cow the wind blew. This is going to be a test. Back to the house to eat, stretch, and sleep. Talk to you tomorrow.

Monday

morning was an early rise. I like to get my work done before things get crazy busy on the course. The fans are arriving today. The PGA of America is allowing ten thousand fans a day. I love this more than anything. I love chatting with the fans and just spreading the word of golf. This is my mission in life. I would love everyone to play the greatest game and sport on the planet, as the game

has given me everything in my life, including my upbringing, travel, family and livelihood. I played 9 holes with Jazz Janewattananond from Thailand, the number 100 ranked player in the world. He will be competing for his country in the Olympic Games this year. Jazz is a great player and holds the distinction of making a cut on the Asian Tour at the age of 14. Pretty impressive.

The wind was up and was blowing into our faces the last 5 holes which makes the course very challenging. I hit the ball solid and worked on shots all around the green surrounds. There is so much undulation in these surrounds and the greens are raised and exposed to the wind which makes putting that much more challenging. The grass we are playing off is called paspalum. It’s a type of grass that is very sticky to the golf ball when pitched into with spin. It’s a seaside grass that isn’t affected by the salty air. We used Jazz’s Foresight Sports GC Quad launch monitor (which is a portable launch monitor) to see how far the ball was actually carrying. Once again Trackman technology was on the range while we were practicing. The wind was directly in our faces while we were on the range, and we saw balls being hit with our drivers flying 245 yards. You can now see the effect that the wind has on the flight of the golf ball. My normal drive carries 295 yards with no wind. After practice we had a few people over to the house for some steaks. Then it was off to stretch, and bedtime. I have an 18 hole practice round with some friends tomorrow.

Tuesday

was an early day. I was asked to do a short TV golf coaching appearance on ESPN and the golf channel. It was very cool, as a coach myself, to have my two coaches standing next to me on the stage. Bill Davis and Tom Willson are both PGA Master Professionals whom I’ve listened to since an early age. Bill was my first coach when I was 17 years old in 1988, and Tom joined as my swing coach in the year 2000. They both bring different skill sets to the table for me, which I like. I played with Tommy Fleetwood, Rich Beem and Jim Herman today. Jim won the PGA Tour’s Wyndham Championship last year, a week after we were paired together in the first 2 rounds of the PGA Championship at Harding Park. I still like to think I had a little to do with his win. Rich Beem is the 2002 PGA Champion, which was the first PGA Championship in my career. And Tommy Fleetwood has the greatest flow on the planet, coming right out the back of his hat, and is a great player. The course was windy again. Same direction, but stronger. So many people were out there watching. It was great to see that life is getting back to normal. Tommy and I may have even won a few bucks as well. So much different than the crowd-less Harding Park last year. The 17th hole was playing 235 yards into a stiff 28 MPH wind. Bill Davis, who was out there with me for the entire round, bet me a hundred bucks that I couldn’t hit 3 wood over the green from the tips into the wind. I took it and lost, although I did hit it to the back edge of the green. After the round, I was off to the practice area for some ball flight work and some short game work in the wind. My family comes in tonight, which is great, since I miss them when I travel. Logan Joanna Labritz was added to our clan

in January. A quarantine pregnancy and surprise but couldn’t imagine life without her. She will be making her first trip to a PGA Championship, and in tow with her are my wife, Kerry, and daughter Ryan. Matthias, my son, will be in tomorrow with our friend Jen. So I’m excited to share the experience with them. Off to the house, stretch, dinner, and bed. Another 9 holes tomorrow with some friends.

Wednesday

is a great day to get up and play some golf. I had Titleist make me a new 2 iron that will keep the ball flight down a bit in the wind. So I’ll be testing that club today. Morning routine: up, stretch, light work-out and cardio, breakfast, and to the course. The wind is still blowing and I’m playing a 9 hole practice round with Webb Simpson, Thomas Detry and Omar Uresti. We played the back 9 holes today, as I wanted to get more comfortable with the last 5 holes. The crowds are growing - and so is the wind. The next two days should be interesting. My tee times are considered early/late, being 7:16 am on Thursday and 12:41pm on Friday. Maybe it’ll be calmer tomorrow morning. After our nine hole round it was time for some rest. I took my family to the beach in the afternoon for some down time. I could grind 24/7, but experience tells me to take a break as well. Dinner, stretch, working on the pin placements for tomorrow, and bed. It’s an early one! I feel prepared and ready. Body feels great.

Thursday

morning came quick, but I’m rested. It felt like my head just hit the pillow before my iPhone alarm went off. I’m writing this morning to capture how I feel right before I tee off. And I must admit, I feel calm and excited, all at the same time. It’s so nice to have my family around. I’ll do a little stretch, quick 10 minute cardio session, then off to player dining and a good breakfast and a cup of coffee. I’ll write again tonight after the round. Here’s to a bunch of birdies. What a course! The set-up was great. I was paired with Harold Varner III and Brendan Steele. Great gentlemen. The course would’ve played shorter than all of the practice rounds as the tees on some of the holes were moved forward a touch - if it weren’t for the winds. They were blowing. I played pretty well, considering. I carded a 76 and am in 94th place. I actually lost a ball on hole 16. How do you lose a ball in a Major golf championship with all of the spectators? I hit a drive a touch to the right and found it, but my next shot, a 6 iron, that I hit perfectly from the beach, on the perfect line...was nowhere to be found. What a bummer. My first double bogey of the tournament. Other than that, I had some birdie opportunities and only converted two of them. The wind was a huge factor. Looks like the cut will be 4 or 5 over par for the tourney, so I’m right there with a solid round tomorrow. I’m off to the practice tee and putting green. Then a nice dinner with the family, stretch, and bed. I have a late tee time tomorrow and am looking forward to some rest tonight.

Friday

It’s nice to have the extra time this morning. Not a big rush. I enjoyed some breakfast with the team. I had a nice stretch and warm up before I went to the course. The wind is up already at the house. I’ll report back later. ...The wind did not lay down. It was blowing right from the get go. The first 3 holes played directly into a 20 MPH wind. I got off to a slow start, with two bogeys. Two more sloppy bogeys on 7 and 9, and I made the turn at plus 4 and plus 9 for the tourney. I was told the cut line was rising - so maybe I still had a chance. The back 9 was a challenge. A double on 10, birdie on 11, pars on 12 and 13. Then I headed back into the wind for the finale. A solid bogey, double bogey, birdie, bogey, bogey finish. A total of 81 for the day - my highest score in a Major Golf Championship. Bummed, to say the least. Did I mention the wind? Mother...nature! Those last 4 holes were challenging. But wow what a masterpiece of a course. My 2 playing partners will be playing the weekend as they both finished the two first days at 5 over par. Brendan Steele actually pitched in from 15 yards off the green for birdie on 18 to get in on the number. This is a crazy game. The wind was not blowing as hard this morning as it did in the afternoon, which only added to the difficulty. I packed up my locker and headed to the house, disappointed in my performance. But, as I entered the house, with all of my friends and family welcoming me, my disappointment seemed to wash away. They say the greatest golfers have the worst memories. Looks like as a player, I’ll be forgetting this round. But as a coach, I’ll draw from each experience. It makes me grow on many levels: as a player, coach, Director of Golf, husband and dad. My takeaway for the week: My putting needs to improve, my long game is solid, my iron play is solid, my wedge play around the green is solid, and my mental game is tough. I can say with all of my heart that I gave 100% to each shot out there all week, and that I look forward to my next opportunity, and am grateful to be sharing everything that I learned with my family, students and friends.

I hope you enjoy reading my PGA Championship diaries as much as I do writing. A huge thank you to all of my sponsors: GlenArbor Golf Club, Titleist, Foot-Joy, Galvin Green, Centerview Partners, Orion Energy Partners, ICapital, Strategies for Wealth - Liapunov, Four Seasons Orlando, and Voice Caddy rangefinders. Also a huge shout-out to my caddy, Todd Luigi, for always giving 100%. And endless thanks for the support of all my family and friends, to the GlenArbor owners and members who came out to Kiawah to support me, and for all the texts, emails and social media support that everyone sent before, during and after the event. I’m a truly blessed man - who loves the game of golf and most of all sharing these experiences. Until my next adventure... fairways and greens... and remember to grind, look around every once in a while to take it all in...oh, and hold your finish. 138
