I’M SORRY:

SAYS THE BEAR P O RTA L P R E S S REPORTERS GAIN EXCLUSIVE ACCESS TO THE MASTER C R I M I NA L , ‘ T H E BEAR’ IN THE ZOO.

674334A - 3 THE BEAR

Following our exclusive interview with Lady Penelope in last week’s edition, Reporters from Press Office W managed to get a set of questions they had written to The Bear, via the Zoo Keeper. The reporters waited patiently to see if The Bear would reply to their questions. Eventually they were contacted by The Bear, who had been able to record the answers to the reporters questions. The reporters heard how sorry The Bear is about the whole thing. He claims that he didn’t really know what he was doing and had become confused when he saw the necklace through the window because it was “just so sparkly”. See the full interview inside.

THE MADCAP WORLD OF PROFESSOR CRANKPOT

Captain Scott Visits Portal Press Well a look alike at least! By Aimee Urwin

On Friday the 16th March Captain Scott paid Portal Press a visit! It was really Mr Ellison but it was still fun. He came to show reporters how to survive in the wild and cold places like Antarctica. Mr Ellsion said, “You need to take a proper camping oven to cook your food on. You can take bags of rice and curry. You need to eat lots of calories in sub zero temperatures to keep you fit and heathy.”

Then Mr Ellison explained about the clothes you would need to wear to make sure you don’t get frost bite. You need to wear lots of layers. Reporters had a try at building tents and make shift shelters. All reporters had a really good morning. Make sure you look at our newspaper on-line to see us building our tents and shelters!

The Hobby Club: Let’s Build it! By Destiny Armstrong and Jamie Potts

We want to talk to you about a hobby of ours – playing with LEGO. We love LEGO. Between us we own Lego City Space Airport,, Lego City Police Station and Lego Star Wars. You can make lots of things with LEGO.

Professor Crankpot is very forgetful. He has lots of ideas for new invention but sometimes he can’t remember which materials are best to use. Press Office W have put together a guide to help Professor Crankpot and everyone else know more about materials.

We know we donʼt look it..but Bedlington Station First School is 100! To celebrate this huge milestone we are planning lots of exciting events during 2012 and will let you know more about these soon. While we prepare there are a few things you can do to help! If you have, or anyone you know has, any photos or memorabilia from the history of our school that we could borrow during our celebrations please send them into school. (clearly named please)

As part of the celebrations we will be collecting stories from people about their time and relationship with our school. Former pupils, current parents, retired teachers, or anyone who has been part of the history of Bedlington Station First School has a story to tell. You may have valuable information, anecdotes, fond memories or a memorable experience that could help us piece together a picture of our school over the past 100 years. These contributions will all be used during the celebrations and may be included in our ‘100years100stories’ project.

Come along to our 100th Birthday Bash on Saturday 30th June at 2pm!

Tell people! If you know a former pupil who has moved away, let them know about our centenary. Do you know of a community member who was a previous pupil or staff member but now doesn’t have a direct link to our school? We are particularly interested in hearing from people who have information about the early life of our school. Did your Grandparents or Great Grandparents used to tell you about their time at our school? We want to hear from you!

If you have any information or stories for us you can send them by: Email to bedlingtonstationfs@me.com Post to Bedlington Station First School, School Road, Bedlington Station, Northumberland, NE227JQ Fax to 01670 826810 We are looking forward to an exciting year and we hope you will join us in our celebrations.

Keeping Warm: Which Material is best? By Press Office 4

The results of the investigation into which material keeps water warmest for longest are now available! Reporters in Office 4 and 3 carried out the investigation this week and both found that the fleecy material (100%polyseter) kept water in jars warmest for the longest period of time. The temperature of the water started at 53 degree celcius. Two hours later the water in the jar wrapped in fleecy material had dropped to 25 degrees celcius, whilst the water in the

jar wrapped in foil had dropped to 24 degrees celcius. The jar that was left unwrapped had cooled the most with the temperature being 20 degrees celcius.

My X Factor Experience By Katie Davison On Tuesday I went to see the X Factor Live. I went with my mam and dad, my sister Emily and my mam’s friend. It was really exciting. First to sing was Amelia Lily. After Amelia it was Kitty singing “Edge of Glory” by Lady GaGa. She was standing on a massive table with a long dress. It was

freaky! I think the best singers were Little Mix. They won the competition on the night (even though it was just a tour). The X Factor tickets were a Christmas present so when I left the show I said a big thank you to my man and dad! I would give the X Factor show five stars out of five.

Surviving Antarctica: What would you need? Press Office 3 and 4 have taken part in a survival morning. These are the essential items every explorer needs to take to Antarctica. In terms of clothing you need to take lots of warm layers to wear. You need specially designed clothing such as boots, hats, scarves, and thick coats. All of this will keep you warm in the harsh weather. You also need to take really warm gloves to keep your hands warm and to stop you getting frostbite. It helps if you take 2 body warmers, two wooly jumpers and a balaclava as well. Thermal underwear is also essential! For your camping gear you have to bring your own tent or bivouac, survival bag, mat and a sleeping bag.

T h i s week, ‘ m y life’ columnist, Logan Reed tells us about his life and his fantastic weekend. “I have had a brilliant weekend at Centre Parks. I went with my family. It was my birthday on Saturday. We went swimming and then we played tennis. Me and my mum won the game. We had a tea

party at the lodge and had a football cake. On Sunday we watched Newcastle vs N o r w i c h C i t y. Newcastle won and Cisse scored the goal. I got a Bart Simpson remote control car off my brother and a noisy guitar off my Grandma and Grandad. We had a safe journey home and I am looking forward to going to work at Portal Press tomorrow.

You have to take these things to keep you alive whilst camping. In Antarctica you need to take lots of food to keep your energy levels up. Eating plenty of sweets helps as well as other sugary foods. Packets of dry food can be mixed with boiling water to make simple meals when out in Antarctica, and they do not take up much space in your bag. To get around on the ice you need snowmobiles or bikes with thick tyres on. The thick tyres mean it will not sink into the soft snow. Airplanes need skis on and a lot of space to successfully land. In order to be a successful explorer in Antarctica, all of the equipment above is vital to surviving the harsh weather conditions.

Opened a packet of biscuits, Played a game, Queued for a show, Raked the leaves, Sat on a seat, Tasted my dads curry, Used a tool, Visited my grandma, Went to the swimming baths, X-rayed my leg, Yelled at my brother, and.... Zipped my coat up. What a busy day!

P o e t r y Competition If you are good at writing poems then send your poetry in with your reporter this week. The winning poems will be printed in next weeks paper. Good Luck!

Bedlington Station

On Tuesday 20th March Press Office 2 went on a walk around Bedlington Station. First, we got ready by going to the toilet and putting our coats on. Then, we sat on the carpet and Miss Tuart put us with a partner and explained that we would be following a map to help us get around Bedlington Station. Next, we set off on our way. We left our press office and walked down the street. The first thing we passed was the church. Miss Tuart asked us to put this on

Messy Mud! by Press Office A

HER MAJESTY THE QUEEN WAS IN TOUCH WITH ACORN PRESS AGAIN THIS WEEK. She has decided to hold a party just for children. She knows that children love to make a mess so she would like Acorn reporters to find the messiest material suitable for her children’s party. Each day a new material arrived for the reporters to explore. They had messy squelchy mud, sticky spaghetti, drippy gloop and smooth soft shaving foam. The reporters lost no time in getting to grips with all this mess. They then decided which material the Queen should use by putting marks next to their favourite mess! Here are the results: Spaghetti, Mud, Gloop and Shaving foam. The Queen has been sent the results and Acorn reporters hope the children’s party goes very messily!

The Winner: After the Reporters finished investigating the messy materials they decided that the Shaving Foam AND the Mud should both be used at the Queenʼs Party!

In 2006, a big hole was discovered in the northern part of Antarctica. As soon as the discovery was made, the US military said they had nothing to do with it. Are they acting suspicious? Could it be have been made by someone else? Nobody knows. It is a mystery because every country signed a contract saying that they will not destroy any parts of Antarctica. The hole is 30 metres tall and 90 metres wide. It is big enough to fly a plane in and out of. Press office 3 have been asking staff around Portal Press this week to try and answer this Antarctic mystery. Receptionist at Portal press, Mrs Redshaw believes it was made by a meteor just one of many theories out there. Reporter Chloe Crosby comments, “I think it was a bomb”, and reporter Michael Lee thinks it is some sort of tunnel. Other Reporters in Press Office 2 have some different opinions. Matthew Dodds thinks that “an alien spaceship made the hole.” Abbi Tate thinks that “the US military made the hole to hide weapons.” There are certainly a lot of unanswered questions about this mystery hole in Antarctica. Do you know something we don’t? If so contact us, we would love to hear your theories. You can look at the hole yourself on Google Earth. The coordinates for the hole are –66.553217, 99.838294.
