There was a moment where I felt like I was dying. And I wasn’t dying, I was fine, really, but there were parts of me dying. Parts of me that I loved that I didn’t feel should have to go. I had let it become a routine in my daily life where it seemed like it was suppose to be this way.

Somehow I had gotten taken away in life by the tsunami of work, errands, kids, clients, relationships- all the good things- but I had forgotten something really important, something vital and essential, like as necessary as breathing to me.

I had forgotten about me.

Dream catchers are intended to protect the sleeping individual from negative dreams, while letting positive dreams through. The positive dreams would slip through the hole in the center of the dream catcher, and glide down the feathers to the sleeping person below. The negative dreams would get caught up in the web, and expire when the first rays of the sun struck them.

I am the kind of person who tries to approach everything in life as a spiritual practice so when my own personal spiritual practice started to wane and become nonexistent with numerous kids and projects and distractions and getting lost on social media… all the external noise life throws at you and tricks you into living, I noticed I was approaching life less and less as a spiritual practice and it all began to feel like a chore. Which depleted me. Big time. I did not want life to become a chore, something I had to get over with every day. Life used to thrill me, but somehow all of it was creating weight and disguising itself as “something I had to do. Instead of feeling the amazing blessing of it all, the miracles, the big, bold, holy beauty and mess that would turn me on and make me remember to love and give thanks, I was feeling like it was all a chore. The kids. The man. The writing. The creative work. The activism. The garden. The exercise. The art. The house. The books. The lunch + drink dates. The yoga classes. I mean everything. Everything felt like nothing to me. And I had this OMG holy moment of “what had I become?” and also “no way in hell”. I was rushing through everything and not seeing, and I mean really not seeing the beauty in this life. I wasn’t just rushing; I was running. Running away from all the feelings. Running away from the deeper places and moments in life. Running away from taking care of myself. Running away never leads to anywhere good.

There is a point in all our lives when we are faced with the decision: will we practice sitting with ourselves in the thick of it and still give good self-love or will we keep giving ourselves away without ever turning inward, to do something that infuses us with healing, to fuel ourselves, to see our selves, to pay attention to ourselves. To notice where we are and what we want to do next. There is something that I keep learning in my life and it’s hard for me to hear and hard for me to listen to, but down to the root of it all, I know it’s true.

“I realized the only way to truth & healing of the self and the world is to turn in.” When we show up in the world and only give our best love, energy, time and compassion to others and to external situations and things, and we fail to sit down and pour it all back on to ourselves - we are not being authentic. We are not living as true and spiritual beings if all we do is outpour. I personally believe we give selflessly like this because we are actually acting out of fear- showing up for others in love, compassion and all the rest because we: - want to be loved. - fear we will not be accepted - a dogmatic religion told us to put others first and our selves last - we are not ready to look at ourselves with open eyes and an open heart and truly get to know our own needs - because we want to be “good”. But if you want to be true? Like begin to show up for yourself so you can show up in truth for others? Turn the attention back on the self. And start from there.

As much as I thought I could do it by living outward, giving and giving, with love and an open heart, I realized the only way to truth and healing of the self and the world is to turn in. What saved me was finding a simple daily practice + ritual that mean the world to me, that fills me up, starts my day {sometimes it doesn’t happen until the middle of the day and sometimes even before bed, but that’s okay, I have to be flexible and know that each

5 YOGA MAT Then I get out my yoga mat and begin to stretch. Sometimes I just do one pose. Sometimes I stay on there for a while and play. Some days I just lay on my back. I have no rules, I just get on and see what happens and move my body. I relax and enjoy my inner motions.

6 WRITING Then I write in my journal - for a few minutes- my gratitude for the day. Sometimes it’s a list. Sometimes it’s a letter to someone. Sometimes it’s just a word. And that’s it.

It might feel like a lot, but my goodness, are we not worth this time? How much time do you give to work, clients, family, the world every single day? Are we not worth slowing down and spending some time for ourselves, in ritual, in ceremony, in solitude and realness? This process of spiritual practice literally brought me back home and into my body. I stopped my rushing and running. At first it was hard, my mind and heart were going to fast, it took practice to just take the time. But now I savor it, I can’t wait for it, I am so grateful for it. My kids now just float around me when I do it, knowing that it’s my time to be with Me and don’t interrupt or ask me for anything, and if they do? I just tell them “it’s my practice time now, you’ll have to wait.” And they sometimes chant and yoga with me, but mostly they leave me alone. They understand that when I give myself this, I give them more. This practice has brought me ease in creation, in work, in relationships.

This practice has given me the power of commitment and showing up. This practice has given me healing and love. Everything got better when I committed. Magic happened. The kind of magic I always knew my essence held. We are the most important people in our lives. And we need to take the time to infuse our moments with practice, the kind that resonates with us. We are all unique. We are all whole. Ritual and practice us reminds us to care for our wholeness. If you could think of 6 easy things you can do, with great intention, for you and only you, what would they be? Keep in mid you want to try and do these daily for yourself. Maybe it’s by taking a walk in nature, singing, painting, even making a delicious snack. Or maybe the simpler things like writing a prayer. Taking a nap. Or play with your pets. List some things that feel true to you, that feel right, that feel aligned with your heart. Let them be whatever they are, as long as it’s about you + you. Nobody else. We are all worth this love and attention. We are all worth a practice that fills us, that is all ours, and nobody else’s.

One Of Those Days HOW

I mean, some days are all sunshine and clean air and clean food and yoga and singing to the sky. Some days are really like that, you know? They just roll out all easy and clear, like we were meant for all of this, meant to love and live. (That’s because we are, but nevertheless...)

S

ome days aren’t like that. Some days start off crooked, with headaches or cloudy brains or sluggish limbs. Some days are endless hours of cravings for white bread, pastries, more pastries, anything sweet. I’ve even eaten a pack of peanut m&m’s for lunch on one of those days because I couldn’t muster enough care to really eat something good for me. Those m&m’s really hit the spot, though, I tell you what. I’ve noticed sometimes we like to grasp wildly for reasons and justifications for the one-of-those-days days. Mercury retrograde. PMS. Not enough sleep. Too much sleep. Sensitivity. The moon and cosmos. And so on and so on. The bottom line, though, is that no matter what happens with us and the world, there will always be those days. It’s okay. We don’t need to justify them. They happen. Shit happens. But you know what else? Shit happens. And then we have better days. Here is a list of a few things that help me a little bit when I’m having one of those days. I thought I’d share it with you just in case it helps you out sometime.

Water - I’m not gonna lie, I have a hard time EATING WELL on these days, and so I focus more on drinking a lot of water rather than stressing about clean food. Higher water intake makes me feel like I’m eating well even if I’m not. That being said, eat well if you can! I’m just being realistic with myself and on these days I sometimes feel like depriving myself of treats would just bring me to tears.

Rest - OMG. I cannot stress this one enough. Rest as much as you can on these days. We all need more rest. It’s true. We do a lot of things and rest not as often as maybe we need to. This brings us back to the surrender piece. There will be more time for productivity. You will be forgiven for a day of uselessness. Use the uselessness to invest in yourself and make yourself better for the new day ahead of you. Let your body sleep and rest and let your mind forget the to-do lists, the long lists of impossible tasks. Grant yourself the gift.

Indulge - I think that on these days, a balanced indulgence is important. I could say that by exercising, drinking water, and eating lots of vegetables, you will feel better. But you know what? I’m not sure that’s true. I think some days are murky no matter what we do, and so finding the sweet spot of acceptance (without wallowing) is key. For me, allowing myself to indulge in rest, books, movies, or certain foods, can be really helpful getting me through these days. Sometimes things feel hard, and one of our great human blessings is the abundance of ways that we can ease things through pleasure. There’s food and sweets, hugs and snugs, sleep and naps, walks in the wilderness, swimming in water, drawing on paper, mixing a bowl of batter.

Tears - Speaking of tears, let’s cry! Can you cry? Man, sometimes that shit can work wonders. If you need to cry and can’t, try reading a super sad passage from a book or watching a tear-jerking chick flick. I’m a fan of cry-aids when needed.

Exercise - Duh. This one’s hard, especially when we’re feeling blue. But that’s when it’s most important. It doesn’t have to be anything major, but I’ve found that moving my body can lift the pressure of The Funk up off my shoulders just enough so that new oxygen infiltrates my brain and body and things feel a little different. Stretching on the floor works. Sometimes I just jump rope for a few minutes. I’ve recently started riding my bike again and that works all sorts of wonders. Even just doing a back bend or some downward dog will help. That upside-down thing really works.

Surrender - I’ve found that this is one of the most effective ways to get through these difficult days. As somewhat of a fighter by nature (not physically, just in the way I’m determined to get through stuff), I find myself fighting it hard when I’m having an off day. That gets me nowhere, fast. The day continues on as it will, and if I fight it I fall into all sorts of guilt traps and resistance-stress. I’ve learned that letting it be what it is makes it flow with more ease and grace, even if it’s not always pleasant. My self-conversation with surrender and acceptance is along the lines of “well, there’s always tomorrow.” Whatever your simple pleasures are -- the ones that bring light -use them and let them carry you through to the other side. ≈

Whether we can sense it or not, we live amongst powerful electromagnetic frequencies created by all kinds of electrical devices. Cell phones, computers, air conditioning units… if it requires electricity, it creates an electromagnetic field. The truth is that we don’t know the whole truth about electromagnetic radiation. We’ve never been so immersed in it as we are right now, and we can’t be sure what consequences it will bring. On a recent visit to my doctor (she does applied kinesiology; energy work), I found out that there was too much electromagnetic radiation in my body. To be honest, I wasn’t surprised. I work on a computer all day long, and even when I’m not working, I tend to be attached to my phone. She recommended I get an EMF protector, and I did not hesitate to take her advice.

Repair

Grounding the body as well as using key foods and supplements improves resiliency to EMFs. Earthing is an excellent practice to ward off the harmful effects of electromagnetic fields. Simply stand barefoot on a dewy patch of grass or walk along a sandy beach for at least ten minutes each day. A nutrient rich diet is also essential. Below is a list of edibles and super foods that protect against EMFs: - Iodine - Vitamin D3 - Sea vegetables - Spirulina - Noni - Curcumin - B-complex vitamins - Melatonin - Tulsi (Holy Basil) - Omega-3 fatty acids - Glutathione - Sulfur - Selenium - Zinc In addition, consuming high Oxygen Radical Absorbency Capacity (ORAC) foods is vital to prevent and heal DNA damage from EMFs. Good choices include: artichokes, cranberries, red beans, pecans, pomegranate seeds, rosemary, asparagus, blueberries, walnuts, prunes, calciferous vegetables, cinnamon, broccoli and cilantro. Always remember to select organic for ultimate nutritional power. Even though living in an age of Wi-Fi and all sorts of EMF spewing gadgets is hazardous, we don’t have to be victims of this invisible menace. Tend to the diet, ground the body and unplug appliances whenever possible. By taking these precautions and proactive steps, modern living need not be so dangerous.

than a non-believer”

Unplug. Completely avoiding electromagnetic radiation is impossible. Yet minimizing exposure lessens the damaging impact on health. The first rule of thumb is to turn off and unplug appliances when not in use. Next, avoid Wi-Fi networks -- especially in the home. Fully charging laptops and then unplugging when ready for use is another way to minimize EMF exposure. If the computer needs to be connected to a power source, make sure plugs and power strips are located far away from the body. Cellphones? Keep the phone away from the body by activating speaker mode. If this isn’t possible, use a wireless ear piece. Even with lower levels of exposure, it is still important to fortify the body in order to avert health issue.

Now, I’m no expert on devices like these. Will an EMF protector truly reverse the effects of this technological world in which we live? I can’t say that I know the answer. But… I’ve always been more of a believer than a non-believer, so today I want to introduce you to a couple of protectors I’ve happily brought into my life. The first one I got was this EMF harmonizer for my phone. My doctor recommended the brand, so I was confident in making the purchase. It’s made with natural negatively-charged ions to balance out the positively-charged ions given out by electronics. Where there is balance, there is happiness. You just use the glue it comes with to adhere it to the back of your phone, and you’re good to go. The glue holds the device on tight to your phone, but it’s not permanent, so you can always remove it if you change your case or get a new phone. My second purchase was even more exciting: an orgone pyramid. Orgonite is a man made “life-force” en-


ergy that is believed to literally transform bad energy into good. It’s made by suspending organic materials – crystals, metals, herbs, essential oils – in resin. The potentially tricky thing about orgonite is that it must be made with intention. It must be made in a happy, loving, giving environment in order to be happy, loving, and giving itself. If you are not the creator of your orgonite, it’s best to have an expert feel your energy with it to make sure it’s right for you. After I received my pyramid, I brought it to my doctor so she could muscle test my energy with and without it. When the pyramid was close to me, she reported that my energy field became much, much stronger. In addition to offering protection against electromagnetic radiation, orgonite can raise the vibration of your food, your plants, and even your entire environment. This may sounds like nonsense to you, but – I kid you not – within a few weeks of introducing the pyramid to my home, all of my plants (which I used to have a hard time keeping alive) began to thrive. Suddenly I’m see new sprouts every day – to the point where I feel My third EMF acquisition was a sweet gift from my friend Dan. He happens to be a mineral guru, and he lovingly gave me some beautiful Lepidolite, or as he calls it, “Brigette’s secret forcefield to protect her from the techno-vampiric ultra violent nono frequencies.” Lepidolite is known to clear electromagnetic pollution. It physically breaks off in thin sheets, so you can actually just take a couple sheets and insert inside your phone case for added protection! I think we all know that the only true way to protect ourselves from electromagnetic frequencies would be to stop using electronic devices altogether – so let’s get unplugged! But until we’re fully there, I’m down to keep using my EMF protectors.
