NEW WEBSITE LAUNCHES FOR BEDFORD CORN EXCHANGE It’s now even easier to book tickets for your favourite acts at Bedford Corn Exchange, following the launch of a brand new website. The new attractive and modern website makes it easy to find and book shows coming to our local performance venue, as well as being mobile and tablet friendly. Around three-quarters of people visiting the Corn Exchange website do so using a mobile phone or tablet. The new website will resize and change to fit the size of the screen being used, and presents upcoming shows in a way that makes it much quicker for people to see what’s on and book tickets. There is always lots on at Bedford Corn Exchange. There are upcoming shows from

comedians including Jack Dee and Kojo Anim, evenings with Sir Ranulph Fiennes and Status Quo’s Francis Rossi, and live music ranging from The Shires to the Philharmonia Orchestra to legendary US soul and funk stars The Fatback Band. Cllr Doug McMurdo, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture said “Bedford Corn Exchange is a fantastic venue, bringing so many different musicians, artists, comedians, performers and events to our town. The new website with a modern layout will make it even easier to see what’s coming up, and book tickets to see shows in the heart of our town centre.” Visit www.bedfordcornexchange.co.uk to check out the new website and see what’s coming up.

MP COLUMN

VIEWS FROM RICHARD FULLER, YO U R L O C A L M P. . .

First days, whether at a new job, a new school, in a new relationship or at the start of each year, bring with them hopes and anxieties. So it is as the new session of Parliament begins in this new decade. This year, Parliament will complete our transition out of the European Union and in to a new relationship with the Union. The Government will embark on a major programme of investment to help “level up” opportunity for all citizens, but it will also have to show leadership with international crises that are imminent, as is often the case in the Middle East, or far reaching, like coordinated responses to climate change. As the new Member of Parliament for North East Bedfordshire, I feel a huge urgency to learn and to adapt my skills to advance the diverse interests of the people who make their home here.

I want to make sure I get the opportunity to visit local groups early – to help me become a better advocate for their work. If you are part of a local group that would like to let me know about what you do or have questions for me, then please do get in touch via email at richard.fuller.mp@ parliament.uk or phone 01767 313385 The EU Withdrawal Bill, which is due to be passed by the time this edition of BedsLife is published, will have many consequences, particularly for our local farmers which, in my view will need constant vigilance from MPs. Then there are pressing matters such as the working environment for our ambulance service staff that is causing so much concern, or the individual cases with constituents reaching out to the MP to help them overcome intransigence or error by some government agency. The truth is that an MP must focus on all these matters and a lot more besides. In his last column for BedsLife, my predecessor, Alistair Burt, spoke of Bedfordshire as a county “ full of ideas and inspiration for the future”. I share his optimism and will work hard, for my part, to progress those ideas and promote the inspiration that can overcome our anxieties and give us all the best start to this “twenties” decade.

YO R K S H I R E PUDDING

DAY

February 2nd The first Sunday in February has been designated Yorkshire Pudding Day. ‘Dripping puddings’ were made in Yorkshire as early as 1737. The recipe was published in a book called ‘The Whole Duty of a Woman’ which declared you should use a ‘...good batter as for pancakes, put in a hot toss pan over the fire, add a bit of butter to fry the bottom a little, then put the pan instead of a dripping pan and under a shoulder of mutton, shake it frequently and it will be light and savoury. When the mutton is done, turn it in a dish and serve hot.’ Ten years later the recipe appeared again in a book by Hannah Glasse, the Prue Leith of her day. The puddings took a while to evolve from

flatter, spongier offerings of the time, to the light crispy specimens we know today. The Royal Society of Chemistry once declared that “A Yorkshire pudding isn’t a Yorkshire pudding if it is less than four inches tall.” Yorkshire Puddings are a staple of the British Sunday lunch (though my kids happily eat them midweek too). Mostly they are served as part of the trimmings, but in some parts of Yorkshire they are eaten as a separate course prior to the main meat dish. Originally this was for reasons of frugality; the puddings were served with dripping and gravy as a way of filling the diners with less expensive ingredients and thus making the more expensive meat go further. However you eat yours, Happy Yorkshire Pudding Day.

BOOK REVIE

KNOWLEDGE OF ANGELS by Jill Paton Walsh

Jill Paton Walsh is an extraordinarily versatile writer. Many will know her for her numerous works for children, and more recently for her work continuing the legacy of Dorothy L Sayers’ Peter Wimsey novels. In addition to this, she has written a number of intriguing and thought-provoking novels for adults, and ‘Knowledge of Angels’ is an excellent example of these two characteristics. The story is set on a Mediterranean island in the fifteenth century, described in almost cinematic detail in the opening pages, as Paton Walsh invites us to contemplate the nature of fiction and storytelling. To this closed community come two strangers – one from the outside, a castaway found by C local fishermen, and one from within, a girl seemingly raised by wolves in the forests of M the island. One is as eloquent as the other is Y savage, but their fates become irretrievably tied together as their stories progress. CM At the heart of the book lie a number of MY questions of belief. Palinor, the castaway, professes to have no religion, which poses CY a challenge to the authority of the Inquisition CMY on the island. Amara, the wolf child, seems unredeemably animal in her behaviour, but K begins to grow under the care of the nuns of Sant Clara, raising the issue of nature and nurture. Disturbing, sensitive and deeply affecting, this is a book that will keep you thinking for a very long time.

FILM REVIEW

THE GENTLEMEN Like a lot of people I love a good crime story and the one thing Guy Ritchie is very good at is creating a story revolving around British criminals, Lock, Stock and Snatch showed that. He has been away from the British crime world for a while, with middling success, but The Gentlemen brings him back with a bang!

The Gentlemen is a mazy, twisting journey into the criminal fraternity of England, but this isn’t the world of crime ridden streets and gangs but that of the business of crime. The focus is on the men at the top, specifically Mickey Pearson. Pearson is a drug lord who is trying to sell his very profitable business and get out of the game. The Gentlemen is already a contender for the best film of 2020. It is that good! The story may seem like a very common one but the structure of the film and the way it plays with the viewers expectations is just brilliant. This is Ritchie back at his very best, doing the genre he does best and with a cast of the very best actors, all of whom are great.

Bedford Borough Council is making it much easier for local residents to save time by offering lots more online options on their website. All the council’s online options are displayed in the ‘Save time, do it online’ section on the website and there’s plenty to choose from:

The new online systems also mean that your reports and requests are sent straight to front line teams who have been equipped with mobile devices. This means they can pick up and deal with new jobs straight away, making the process quicker and more efficient.

Maybe you need to: · pay for a council service · book a council sports pitch · double check your bin day, or · tell the Council about a problem in your area like graffiti, flytipping or littering, or a pothole on your street or a cracked or missing pavement slab.

The Council is committed to making services easy to access and has worked hard to make its online services easy to use. Support for those who need help to get online will continue to be available from the council’s Customer Services centre.

You can now do all of these things, and many more, online. Lots of us are already doing our shopping and banking online, and these new changes will mean that residents can do lots more online, at a time to suit them. The services are designed to be easy to use on phones and tablets as well as laptops and PCs. 26

Dave Hodgson, Mayor of Bedford Borough said, “The Council is making it easier, quicker, and more convenient for residents to report problems, request or pay for Council services online at a time that suits. We are not finished yet, there is plenty more to come in the coming months to make it easier to save time by contacting the Council online. You can still get in touch with the Council in other ways, all the same channels as you can now. The aim is to cater for everyone.”

RNLI BIGGLESWADE AND DISTRICT BRANCH Our branch usually raises about £10,000 a year. We raise money several ways, we hold lots of bucket collections across Bedfordshire, in Supermarkets and Garden Centres, where our volunteers do a maximum of 2 hours collecting. We also have collection boxes in various businesses across Bedford. Our latest initiative is called “Betty’s 5p pots” the little jars are with The Surfin Cafe in Biggleswade and in Toby Carvery and Robinson Pool in Bedford. People take them away, fill them with 5p’s and return them to where they got them. So far in 2019 we have raised an amazing £400 which equals 8000 5p’s!!!. We hold two social events a year a meal out and a afternoon Garden Party. We are always looking for volunteers and supporters. Our Volunteers came from across Bedfordshire, if you can help in anyway (even one collection a year) then please contact Stephanie Field Branch Chair on 07763 896464.

We are a small inland branch supporting the work done by many volunteers “Saving lives at sea” with the RNLI. In 2019 we celebrated our 40th Birthday in our current form but there are RNLI records that suggest we were in existence in 1920. Lots of people ask us why we are collecting in Bedfordshire, my answer is usually two-fold. 1. Do you holiday by the seaside in the UK? 2. The busiest Lifeboat Station is Tower on the river Thames, and it is our closest Lifeboat Station.it is manned 24 hours a day 365 days a year.

REMAP

“Independent Living” – easier said than done? A lot is done these days to encourage independence with all the benefits that brings. But what of those niggling little tasks that used to be so easy to do, but now make life a bit difficult or less enjoyable. It might be something that’s too small to bother the professionals with or it might be something that an Occupational Therapist has already helped you with, but it doesn’t quite work for you. There’s an answer here in Bedford with a free service offered by the local group of a national charity called REMAP. REMAP volunteers are retired engineers – they’re problem solvers! The local group cover a wealth of past experience and collectively have a superb resource of home workshop capabilities. Design and make skills include metalwork, woodwork, plastics, electrical and electronics. They’re not in the business of providing standard items that can be found elsewhere, what they really like is a unique problem that nobody else has managed to solve.

We helped a lady who had lost strength in her left arm to carry on playing the piano by fitting a travelling support If you think we might be able to help, or if you’re somebody with a workshop who’s looking for rewarding projects, do please get in touch with Anthony Bond, the local Chairman.

Recently we’ve helped a stroke victim’s recovery by adapting her treadmill, we’ve helped a piano tuner take some of the strain off his arms and we’ve

Friends for Life are a registered charity which provides friendship and company to residents in Bedfordshire care homes. We are looking for more volunteers to become personal befrienders, who can offer time, friendship and company to those that need it the most. It’s a very flexible role, which fits around existing commitments and makes a huge difference to elderly residents that receive few, if any visitors. It can involve chatting, reading, going out for a coffee or walk in the park. If you are interested in finding out more about volunteer befriending, we would love to hear from you.

LYDON JOINS BLUES ON LOAN Bedford Blues are delighted to announce the acquisition of Pete Lydon from Ealing Trailfinders on a loan deal until the end of the season. The 27-year old – who can play at fly-half or fullback – arrives at Goldington Road with proven Championship experience having spent the past two and a half seasons with Ealing and before that, three years with London Scottish. On joining the Blues, Lydon said: “Bedford have always played great rugby so when the opportunity arose to come up here, I jumped at it. “I know quite a few of the boys who are here, from London Scottish or Ealing. Lewis Robling and Grayson Hart were the main two I spoke with and they only had good things to say about the club which made the decision easy.

The playmaker turn finisher has finished each of the last two seasons as the league’s second highest points scorer, registering 858 points from just under 100 appearances. “We are of course extremely grateful to Ben Ward and Ealing Trailfinders for their assistance and support with this and look forward to seeing Pete in a Blues shirt in the near future.” Lydon goes straight into contention for Friday’s fixture at his former club London Scottish (7:45pm kick-off). Buy tickets direct from our hosts here and support the #BluesFamily in their opening fixture of the new decade.

“In the time I’ve been in the Championship, I think I’ve developed quite a lot so I’d like to think I can bring some of those qualities to Bedford. It’s always been a great place to play with fantastic support so I’m looking forward to getting back playing and in front of the Goldington Road fans.” Born in the Hague, Netherlands, Irishman Lydon was brought up in Kilkenny where he first played club rugby. From there, he played in the Irish league for Seaport where he caught the attention of Top 14 outfit Stade Francais. Lydon mainly featured in the European Challenge Cup during his solitary season over the channel – making a total of seven appearances. Since arriving in the Championship from 2014, Lydon has been one of the league’s most dependable performers in open play and from the kicking tee, winning the London Scottish’ Player of the Year award in 2015/16.

CAT FRIENDLY

V E T E R I N A RY P R AC T I C E

Cats can struggle with a visit to the vet – the cat carrier, the car journey, the noisy waiting room and the strange sounds and smells of the surgery are all bad enough before the veterinary surgeon even opens the carrier! The International Society of Feline Medicine (ISFM) supports research and development designed that reduces stress in cats when they need veterinary attention. Acorn House Veterinary Hospital has been recognised by the ISFM as a Gold Standard cat-friendly clinic. So what can you expect when your cat visits Acorn House?

CAT WAITING AREA

At Acorn House we have a large waiting room with a separate area for cats. In this area we have elevated platforms so that cat carriers can be kept off the floor (cats can feel threatened at floor level). We have purpose-made cat basket covers available to cover your cat’s carrier during your wait.

CAT FRIENDLY TRAINING

All of our staff have received training in low-stress handling techniques. This is overseen by a team of “cat ambassadors” and members of staff with further qualifications in cat behaviour and feline nursing. We will allow your cat time to look around the room before the cat carrier is opened. We recommend taking the top off the carrier so that your cat can continue to feel safe in the bottom half of the carrier during the examination.

CAT FRIENDLY HOSPITAL

If your cat needs to stay at the hospital, they will be admitted to a cat-only ward, far away from the noise and smell of dogs! This cat ward is monitored by CCTV and the individual pens contain “feline forts” – specially designed hides that allow shy cats to hide underneath and braver cats to perch on top and watch the world go by. The ward is temperature-controlled and nurses remain on site 24 hours a day to care for your pet.

GARDENING

GARDENING YEAR BEGINS For me February is where the gardening year begins...twice! First – Reaping last year’s rewards: If you were industrious in the autumn, you could now be benefiting from a lovely display of snowdrops (Gallanthus) and Irises. My favourite snowdrops are G ‘Atkinsii’, which are tall with long, graceful flowers and G. nivalis ‘Viridapicis’ with sweet, green tipped flowers. It’s said they’re best planted ‘in the green’ in Spring but I’ve had lots of success with packaged bulbs planted in the autumn so they’re definitely worth trying. As for irises, the deep blue Iris ‘Joyce’ is hard to beat especially on my poor, free draining soil. I planted a witch hazel as soon as we moved into our present house; Hamamelis x intermedia ‘Pallida’. I can’t live without fragrance in my garden and at this bare, drab time of year the wonderfully scented pale-yellow flowers lift my spirits. I discovered we’d inherited an evergreen Clematis (C. armandii). I’d never grown it before but it’s worth seeking out. It needs a warm wall or fence and well-drained soil then rewards you by being frost-hardy and producing lovely creamy, scented flowers at this time of year. 52

Second – Planning this year’s display Perhaps you didn’t manage to plan ahead last year. But don’t panic; the beauty of gardening is that the seasons keep rolling round so make sure you use February to ensure your summer display is top notch. February is definitely the month to start sowing seeds. Fill pots or seed trays with seed compost then firm and level the surface. Sprinkle seeds on to the surface of the compost then cover with a layer of fine grit. Water well with a fine spray. Cover with clear plastic (a polythene bag will do nicely) and remove it once the seeds germinate. Learn from my mistake one year and don’t forget to label the pots! Potting up summer bulbs is generally left until late spring, but I always pot up one or two pots in February. It allows them to get established and provides a nice early display for my patio. Happy gardening.

GARDENING

LEAF HOPPER Leafhoppers are one of the largest families of plantfeeding insects. There are more leafhopper species worldwide than all species of birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians combined. Leafhoppers feed by sucking the sap of trees, and are commonly found throughout the UK. At least one leafhopper species can usually be found feeding on the each of the dominant tree species in the UK. Indeed, it is not uncommon to find several leafhopper species coexisting on the same tree

Leafhoppers injure plants either directly, through feeding that can damage plant tissue and remove essential plant nutrients. Feeding damage is manifest as triangular, chlorotic areas that extend from the feeding sites to the leaf edge. A number of feedings sites on a leaf will cause the leaf to curve downward. If several leaves on a shoot are affected, shoot growth may be stunted. Feeding on leaf tissue can also indirectly injure trees through the transmission of plant pathogens such as viruses, mycoplasma-like organisms, or other microorganisms. The female inserts several eggs into the living tissue of the host plant. The eggs either remain dormant for a period ranging from a month to over a year, or develop and hatch within a few weeks. The young, known as nymphs, feed on plant sap by inserting their stylets into the vascular tissue. Winter washes based on spray oil plus an insecticide on dormant trees during Dec-Jan are recommended to kill overwintering eggs. Contact insecticides such as soap or spray oil are used on growing plants and kill mainly by direct contact. Due to the non-persistent nature of these chemicals re-infestation may soon occur and repeat sprays at 14-21 days may be necessary.
