news
Twenty overnight beds are now available to rough sleepers in our Borough. Working in partnership with SMART, who run the Prebend Day Centre and extended outreach services, the Council is providing twenty overnight beds which are available every night until 31st March. These beds are available by referral only, are managed by street outreach teams, and anyone being supported by the Outreach Services is able to register for a bed each night. People who are sleeping rough are encouraged to attend the Prebend Day centre to receive support from outreach teams, which enables them to access the winter beds. If you see someone sleeping rough, you can let the outreach teams know by reporting it through the national rough sleeping report website www.streetlink.org.uk. This will ensure that individuals are contacted by outreach teams each day. Following a bid by the Council to the Government’s Rough Sleeper Initiative fund, Bedford Borough Council has been able to expand its provision for those rough sleeping and has introduced a number of initiatives, including these overnight beds. Outreach teams have already supported 12 people off the streets and into long-term accommodation. A number of rough sleepers have also been supported into temporary accommodation including 8 people moved off the streets and into accommodation provided by our partners ‘The Kings Arms Project’, with intense support to find employment and long-term accommodation. This is in addition to the well-established severe winter provision, run by the Salvation Army and supported by Bedford Borough Council. This shelter opens when the temperatures are forecast below freezing for three or more consecutive nights. This year the shelter is at the Salvation Army outreach centre on Kennedy Road, off Elstow Road Bedford and works in partnership with the 20 bed provision.

? A FRESH START
I sat down with Grand Union Housing Group the other month, one of our leading suppliers not only of social housing, but of the understanding of what drives modern tenants. My hardworking team is in regular contact with them on behalf of constituents. I’m not certain the U.K. ever got rented housing right, in modern times. It’s different on the continent. Rented housing in many European cities is the norm, including amongst those who are affluent, who have never quite been impacted by the desire for home ownership in the same way as over here. Nor the stigma. It’s not that home ownership is wrong- of course it’s not, but it’s not necessarily the only way to live, as often portrayed. Renting is, and should be seen as, just as valid a choice. So I really welcome the publication recently of Shelter’s report “Building for our Future”, which offers a new vision for an expansion of social housing recognising the reality of the UKs changing housing picture. I particularly welcome the care and effort with which it was put together, with 31,000 people taking part in its Big Conversation and a group of Commissioners drawn from across the spectrum of politics and public life. They have come to a common conclusion about the need for more social housing, and how it can be paid for. At a time of too much division in our political life, we needed this. If it hasn’t yet dawned on politicians, and,

importantly, the public as well that we have got to be less partisan in our approaches to life, then it’s time it did. The Grenfell tragedy told us much about attitudes to social housing, and the stories of inadequate provision in the private sector tell us more. We need that private sector, but like home ownership, it can no longer be the only answer to the changes needed in provision. The determination to look at land value reform, at regulation, and at the detail of cost benefit analysis has presented quite a blueprint for the future. So new homes for those homeless and in poor health, for older renters and for those in inadequate private rentals should make a profound difference to the nation’s quality of life. The report makes important reading, and I hope the social housing sector, and those who work in it, get the recognition they increasingly deserve.

Thank You! We would like to say a huge thank you for your contribution in making Christmas In A Box 2018 the best yet. With the help of many schools, businesses, individuals from the community, All Nations Church and Bedford Foodbank we were able to provide over 850 boxes that impacted over 1,900 people! We have been amazed at people’s generosity at this time of year. We’ve had feedback from some families to say how much of a difference the box of food made to their Christmas. For some this would have been all they had. Please see the pictures below which shows all the boxes ready for distribution, it was an amazing sight! Kind regards The Christmas In A Box Team

VO LU N T E E R S N E E D E D TO L I S T E N TO C H I L D R E N R E A D I N LO C A L P R I M A RY S C H O O L S Can you spare an hour or two a week to listen to children read in a local primary school? Schoolreaders is looking for more volunteers in Bedfordshire to carry out this important role. Reading time for many children at home and at school is often insufficient and one in four children are now leaving primary school unable to read to the required standard. This can have a lifelong consequence. No qualifications are necessary, just a good command of spoken and written English. Schoolreaders is flexible and will match your availability to an appropriate, local school. Our volunteers find the scheme incredibly rewarding, knowing that a few hours helping a child learn to read each week can have such a great impact on their life chances.

What are Carbs?
Carbs or carbohydrates are molecules that have carbon, hydrogen and oxygen atoms. In nutrition terms they refer to one of three macronutrients. The other two are protein and fat. Dietary carbohydrates can be split into three main categories: Sugars, Starches and Fibre. The main purpose of carbohydrates is to provide energy.
What are refined carbs?
CARB FREE
Diets
Not all carbs are created equal. They are often referred to as simple or complex/whole or refined. Whole carbs are unprocessed and contain the fibre found naturally in food while refined carbs have been processed and had the natural fibre stripped out. Examples of whole carbs include vegetables, whole fruit, potatoes and whole grains. These foods are generally healthy. Refined carbs include sugar sweetened drinks, fruit juices, pastries, white bread, white pasta, white rice etc. Numerous studies have shown that eating refined carbohydrates is linked to obesity and type 2 diabetes. They tend to cause major spikes in blood sugar levels followed by a crash that can trigger hunger and craving for more high-carb food.
Carb Free diets
These types of diets restrict carbohydrates while allowing plenty of protein and fat. Over 23 studies have shown that low carb diets are much more effective than the standard “low-fat” diet that has been recommended for the past few decades. These studies show that low-carb diets cause more weight loss and lead to greater improvement in various health markers including HDL cholesterol, blood triglycerides, blood sugar and blood pressure.
Good Carbs:
Vegetables – It is best to eat a variety of vegetables every day Whole fruits – apples, bananas, strawberries etc Legumes – lentils, kidney beans, peas etc Nuts – Almonds, walnuts, hazelnuts, macadamia nuts, peanuts etc Seeds – Chia seeds, pumpkin seeds. Whole grains – choose grains that are truly whole as in pure oats, quinoa, brown rice etc. Tubers – potatoes, sweet potatoes etc
14
HEALTH People who are trying to restrict carbs need to be careful with whole grains, legumes, tubers and high sugar fruit. It has been suggested that to lose weight you need to eat less than 20g of carb per day.
metabolic syndrome or type 2 diabetes then you are probably carbohydrate sensitive and reducing your carbohydrate intake can have clear life-saving benefits.
Bad Carbs:
Sugary drinks & fruit juices – Coca cola, Pepsi, vitamin water etc. White bread – this is refined carbohydrate that are low in essential nutrients and bad for metabolic health. Pastries, cookies and cakes – these tend to be very high in sugar and refined wheat Ice cream – most types of ice cream are very high in sugar Candies and chocolates – if you are going to eat chocolate choose quality dark chocolate French fries and crisps – whole potatoes are healthy but French fries and crisps are not. These foods may be fine in moderation for some people, but many will do best by avoiding them as much as possible. If you have a lot of weight to lose, or have health problems like

BOOK
review Shopaholic and Baby by Sophie Kinsella
Justified or not, chick lit gets a bad rap, but not everyone enjoys serious tomes. Shopaholic and Baby is the fifth book in the series, and once again features everyone’s favourite shopaholic, Becky. Previous books have seen Becky try to take control of her spending habits by following the advice she frequently gives out as a journalist writing about managing finances; have the time of her life living in New York and shopping on Fifth Avenue; and marry her dream boyfriend Luke, whilst loving the excuse to spend more money. Now Becky has something else to spend her money on. Her baby. From designer nurseries to the coolest pram, there seems to be no limit to what she can shop for. That list includes a celebrity obstetrician, Venetia Carter. On meeting her Becky is shocked to discover that Venetia used to date Luke in college. Will Venetia want to get back together with him? Is Becky’s dream marriage under threat? Most women will be able to relate to the insecurities Becky encounters in this novel as her pregnancy progresses and her body changes. In Becky, Kinsella has created a character who is caring, charming, but at the same time, full of flaws.

FILM
Review Holmes and Watson
I’ve never been a great fan of Will Ferrell, sometimes he is ok (mainly in supporting roles) but that is about the best I could say. He does manage to choose roles in films that always sound interesting though and as a lover of Holmes I had to see this even with him in it.

That was a very big mistake as this film manages to be worse than all of his other duds put together. Somehow the writers manage to mangle every single moment that could be called a plot while filling the time with juvenile, unfunny lines and scenes that are supposed to be jokes. Instead of being an actual movie Holmes and Watson has been edited together so what we end up with is effectively a bunch of short sketches with a flimsy, nonsensical plot sewing those scenes together. The rumours of it being changed after filming makes sense because it is so badly done that Mrs Hudson looks like her lips are saying something different from what you hear! It is early in 2019 but I am confident in saying that I will not see a worse film this year.

P R E PA R I N G P E T S
for a new baby
It is very exciting when a new baby is expected in the family, but a new arrival can come as a scary shock for our pets! It is a good idea to begin preparing your home and pet several months before the baby arrives.
CREATE A “SAFE HAVEN” FOR YOUR PET Set up a safe space for your pet so that they have a place to go to if they end up finding the household too noisy or stressful. For cats, an “igloo” type bed in an elevated location is a great option. Dogs usually prefer an open crate with a blanket over the top, positioned in a tucked-away part of the house. Set up this haven well in advance of the baby coming, and occasionally leave treats inside for your pet to find.
TRAIN ALTERNATIVE BEHAVIOURS If your dog carries out behaviours that will not be acceptable when the baby arrives (e.g. jumping up at people, who may in the future be carrying a baby), use this time to train alternative greeting behaviours.
Contact an APBC-registered behaviourist for help if necessary.
INTRODUCE CHANGES IN ADVANCE If you will need to change your pet’s routine or household layout when the baby arrives, get this ready well in advance. For example, you may wish to move food bowls or litter trays, or ask dogs to sleep downstairs rather than your bedroom. Make changes gradually.
GET YOUR DOG OR CAT USED TO BABY NOISES The Dogs Trust offers a free audio download of household
noises, including those of babies crying. Try playing the noises at a low volume whilst playing with or feeding your dog or cat to make the experience positive. Gradually increase the volume of the recording.
MAKE SURE YOUR PET IS HEALTHY Make sure your pet is up to date with preventative treatments for fleas and worms well before baby arrives. It is also a good idea to ask your vet to give your pet a full health check – painful joints or itchy skin can make your pet irritable and less amenable to welcoming a new baby into the family. 47

GARDENING
Winter Injuries A N D R E C O M M E N DAT I O N S
In spring, many landscape plants in the UK exhibit leaf browning, branch dieback and, in some instances death of the entire plant. This damage appears to have been caused by very cold temperatures over a prolonged period in January. In some locations, subzero temperatures occurred when there was little or no snow cover. This resulted in considerable root mortality that has led to foliage browning and bud and twig mortality low temperatures also directly damaged foliage, bud and twig tissue.
BREAKAGE FROM ICE/SNOW ACCUMULATIONS
DE-ICING/SALT ACCUMULATIONS (ROAD ROCK SALT)
Trees and Shrubs with poor structure and heavy/long limbs are prone to breakage due to added weight of ice and snow.
Commonly used to de-ice highways and pavements. The high levels of salt in the soil from pavement run off can kill plant roots. Sodium can be toxic to plants with salt spray significantly damaging plant s.
Wood decay can also predispose branches and lead to failure from ice and snow loads. Evergreens that have a large surface area to hold snow are especially prone to breakage.
DROUGHT DAMAGE Following long dry summers, trees can suffe3r from long term affects. The lack of food production can leave them in a poor state and susceptible to disease. Cold temperatures can lead to dud damage and poor growth in following growing seasons..
Symptoms: Progressive decline in plant vigor, leaves become dwarfed and brown with dieback and eventual death.
Recommendations Plants should be inspected by an arborist in late winter or early spring for symptoms of winter injuries. Plants stressed by winter injuries are susceptible to pest and disease issues. Do not remove plants that are exhibiting branch dieback and decline immediately. Plants may re-sprout from interior portions of the crown. Pruning back(reducing) dead branches to healthy tissue can be undertaken as plants resume growth. Monitor soil moisture near affected plants and irrigate as needed. Ensure the root zone is properly mulched. Fertilization with a slow release fertilizer will encourage recovery by ensuring sufficient nutrients for new growth. Fertilization is particularly important this year because heavy spring rains caused leaching of nitrogen from the root zone of plants leading to deficiency symptoms. Replenishing soils with fertilizer nutrients will reduce nutrient stress that could compound the effects of winter injury. BARTLETT TREE EXPERTS A Very Brown Hedge Indeed Aphids are one of the most common and troublesome of all garden insect pests. They attack a large number of garden plants throughout the country and are recently causing much disfigurement to ornamental conifer hedges. Commonly known as Greenfly and Blackfly, these aphids feed on hedges, sucking the sap of the plant and can spread several viruses, causing severe dieback. Cypress Aphid is currently troublesome and pre-dominantly affects conifer hedging. Damage inflicted on conifer hedges by the aphid Cinara cupressi is severe and can lead to large brown patches on the hedge. This leads to localised foliage death, reducing the aesthetic look of the hedge. As the aphid is active from May to October it is important to catch this problem early and apply treatments to stop its spread. At the first sign of brown patches call us for a free consultation and professional advice.

GARDENING
My Gardening VA L E N T I N E In the run-up to Valentine’s Day someone always asks me what they should buy for the gardener in their life. Unless you know a bit about gardening, and the tastes of your own particular gardener you’re probably best-off avoiding plants. The non-green-fingered venture into dangerous territory when they try to buy plants because there are so many variables. Will it suit the soil? Is it too invasive? Will it poison the gardener’s dog…or children…eek? It’s a thorny issue (pardon the pun) so here is my go-to gift list guaranteed to make you the Valentine hero of your gardening amour. Don’t buy a sweatshirt which declares ‘head-gardener. They are naff, and most gardeners prefer old, comfy clothes which do the job better. However, if you present your gardener with a tough tunic or gardening apron, which is thorn-proof, and which has lots of deep pockets to house secateurs and trowels, they will love you forever. Then there are wellies. Who knew wellies could be romantic? But gardening folk drool over wellies the way Supermodels drool over Jimmy Choos. And there’s so much wellie-choice now. We all prefer something 52
with a thick sole but there are bright and colourful wellies and traditional ones. For the ultimate in warmth and breathability I can recommend a proper Gore-Tex pair...sheer luxury. Mine remain the favourite Valentine gift my husband ever bought me. He knows how to romance a woman! A proper long-necked watering can, with a brass rose will also earn you Valentine brownie points. Bigger isn’t necessarily better though unless your Valentine boasts big biceps! Watering cans are heavy when full. I find 3-4 litres is about the right size.
A bunch of long-stemmed red roses will set you back at least £40 and they might last a few days. For a similar price you can buy the gardener in your life Felco secateurs (with Valentine red handles) and they’ll last forever. Garden trugs are so practical. Most gardeners I know would be delighted to receive one. The trug is a great gift but even better when filled with a few gardening goodies such as packets of seed, water retaining granules, plant food etc. You could add some hand tools too, such as a trowel and a fork. Make sure they are stainless steel and have long handles for ease of use.

B LU E S Along with a home game against London Irish on Saturday 9th February, Bedford Blues are just a month away from hosting the Under 20s Six Nations clash between England and Italy. Goldington Road will open its gates to Steve Bates’ charges as they prepare to face the Azzurri in the fourth round of the competition on Friday 8th March, just the day before the senior sides battle it out at Twickenham. Speaking about the announcement, Bedford Blues Chairman Geoff Irvine said: “We are thrilled to be able to play host to some of the best up-and-coming talent that England and Italy have to offer and I’m sure that we are set for a wonderful evening of rugby. The Under 20 Six Nations tournament has grown so much over the years and it is an excellent opportunity to see the stars of the future. “Bedford is an extremely special town for so many reasons, but the fact that we have the largest concentration of Italians in Britain will make this a very special fixture at Goldington Road. The town loves its rugby and is very proud of its Italian heritage, so I’m sure that we can expect plenty of support for both teams on the night.” Tickets for the game are on sale now and you can save up to £4 by ordering in advance online at www.bedfordrugby.co.uk

E AG L E S A lot has been going on at the Eyrie. It’s just not on the pitch, where the players play to win matches, but behind the scenes where the owners and volunteers try to make the club as attractive as possible to existing and new fans
Bromham Windows & Home Improvements UPVC Windows & Doors, Conservatories, Fascia, Soffit & Guttering All double glazing repairs including:Broken & misty sealed units, hinges, faulty doors and locks, handles and much more.
On the pitch, our FA Trophy journey came to an end in Derbyshire, when former league club, Chesterfield, took until the 89th minute to score a goal against us. It was enough for the side, three steps and 55 places above us in the Non-League pyramid to end our dream. 197 Eagles fans took the trip to the edge of the Peak District. Going back to the opening sentence, by the time you read this, the club would have had a corporate dinner (19th Jan), and a fans forum with manager, Jon Taylor (30th Jan), and as the season enters it’s final quarter, more off the field activities will be planned, as well as the games on the pitch. There are just two home matches in February as the side host Didcot Town on the 2nd, and North Leigh on the 23rd. If you’re unsure about following the Eagles, check us out on the official website bedfordeagles.net and also on facebook.com/bedfordtown plus twitter.com/ bedfordtown
