FANTASTIC WEEKEND IN BEDFORD STARTS THE SUMMER! The Bedford International Kite Festival and first Bedford Festival of Motoring were at Russell Park and the Embankment over the weekend of 1 and 2 June, with an estimated 30,000 visitors coming along to this fantastic weekend of fun in the sun. The Kite Festival saw kites of all sizes and colours, with flyers from around the world coming to Russell Park to show off their skills. The Park was also filled with fun for the whole family with food, drink, stalls to browse, inflatables and a traditional funfair. The Festival also continued into the evening, with the ‘Party in the Park’. Meanwhile, over on the Embankment around 300 vehicles lined our beautiful riverside, with veteran and classic cars, supercars, dragsters, motorbikes, off road vehicles, big red buses, and lots more in the first Bedford Festival of Motoring.

GO WRONG – WHEN THINGS ND SCANDAL OF THE TRAGEDY A D INFECTED BLOO I wrote recently that there are few better ways of spending an evening than by being in the company of Terry Waite. In sad contrast, there are few more sobering mornings to sit through than to be at the public inquiry into Infected Blood. For those unaware, this Inquiry relates to the events surrounding the infection of Haemophiliacs in the late 70s/80s through blood products, often given in transfusions. The blood products, bought from the United States had been obtained from some donors whose lifestyles had brought them into contact with various transmissible diseases. The recipients and their families never knew. The tragedy is that blood thought to be life enhancing or saving turned out to be a carrier of disease and death. The scandal is that this was deliberately covered up. The long called for Inquiry is finding out what went so wrong. Companies, successive Governments and the NHS have a case to answer. The Inquiry is hearing heart-breaking stories. I listened to a survivor. He described as a child at a special school, where he believed he was safe, being given a new substance about

6

which nurses had doubts; of his doctor caught secretly breaking down in tears of agony once he realised what he had been administering; the shock of the coldness of being told in the company of four other boys who had or had not contracted HIV “you have, you haven’t…”; of being used as a guinea pig for trials without knowing; and of the gifts to him, his friends and the school from pharmaceutical companies – those which he would learn in the future had hidden from him what they were doing and had done. I was there because I have brave constituents, co-infected with Hepatitis and HIV/Aids, who are now among the fewer than 300 survivors of the 1200 so similarly affected. Their astonishing dignity and courage, enduring a lifetime of suffering inflicted upon them and their families, became the persistence which has ensured this inquiry is held, into the biggest scandal ever to affect the NHS. I am afraid there is shame for the nation – but there should only be a marvelling at human resilience in saluting the survivors.

Love Bedford LOV E B E D F O R D M E D I E VA L F E S T I VA L Bedford is getting a colourful and exciting Medieval Festival at the Castle Mound over the weekend of July 27th & 28th, funded by the Bedford Business Improvement District. Organiser David Smith, who has considerable experience in staging Medieval festivals says “Bedford’s Castle Mound makes for a great setting for a Medieval Festival and the fact that is historically authentic has really helped persuade some great re-enactment groups and performers to come to Bedford for the weekend.” Entertainment will be provided by the Medieval Combat

Society, The Wythe Retinue, God’s Company of Tabor, the King’s Executioner, Talonted Feathers, A Merrie Noyse Minstrels, and England’s most famous Medieval Fool, Juggler, and Jester, the legendary Devilstick Peat Fibbs. There will be colourful tentage and living history encampments, circus skills school for children, music and dance, have a go archery, ferret racing, craft demonstrations, the preparation and serving a medieval feast, the chance to hold a hawk or an owl, black powder artillery demonstrations, and a medieval sword fighting tournament. The King’s Executioner will be looking to explain the horrors and indignities of punishments meted out to criminals or those who

attracted the King’s displeasure. If you want to find out more about anything medical or surgical then be sure to visit the camp of the Hussites (God’s Company of Tabor), a mercenary band of soldiery taking refuge in England from their uprising against the Teutonic Knights in central Europe - their battle scarred warriors have had to become well versed in such things. The frolics and jollity will be centred on Castle Mound and its surroundings by the river, but will spread into the town centre, as the re-enactors may well wish to explore the shops, and wandering minstrels look to find folk to entertain.

Home Counties Loft Ladders, Quality You Can Trust! These days most homeowners suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where Home Counties Loft Ladders come in. The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50sqft of boarding and a light - all fully fitted in less than a day from just £355! But it’s not just the affordability of the package that makes Home Counties Loft Ladders stand out, as manager Jamie Oakley explains: ‘Our

watchwords are Quality, Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen, so our customers are assured of the best job.

every installation we carry out!’ So, if you want to make use of your loft space, call Jamie free on 0808 301 9559 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!

sessions alongside the weekly counselling provision.

Last year BEDFORD OPEN DOOR supported 413 local young people aged 13 to 25 years, offering free, confidential counselling. This local registered charity has been supporting young people since 1995 and is accredited by the British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP). The service started with less than 6 counsellors and is now proud to have 29, the majority of whom offer two client sessions per week on a voluntary basis. Young people find a warm welcome at the counselling centre and outreach services in local schools and YMCA hostels. Bedford Open Door also delivers specialist services to youth at risk, victims of crime, unaccompanied asylum seekers and those affected by drugs and alcohol. The service offers two weekly drop in

In this time of increasing awareness of mental health issues, it is understandable that a young person might feel overwhelmed by their emotions, worries and fears and may not know which way to turn for help and support. Added to this they are not only turning from children into adults with the confusion that comes with that stage, but have the enormous pressures of exams, trying to look to their future, social media etc. Bedford Open Door offers a safe and confidential environment for young people. Bedford Open Door, 120 Tavistock Street, Bedford MK40 2SA If you would like to know more about our services or are interested in supporting the charity by fundraising or becoming a Friend of Bedford Open Door please contact us at counselling@bedfordopendoor.org.uk or Tel 01234 350 388.

BEDFORD

Daycare Hospice Bedford Daycare Hospice was established over 25 years ago fulfilling a vision to provide a safe haven where individuals with a life-limiting condition could be cared for. The service today is comprised of daycare for those with any life-limiting condition provided by a team of experienced healthcare professionals supported by volunteers in a calm, peaceful environment where the focus is on the “whole person” – mind, body and soul. Respite for the carer continues to be provided for those in need, to prevent carer breakdown and enable the family member to be able to care for their loved one in their own home. For patients with a cancer diagnosis support is available from the point of diagnosis through investigations and treatment in the form of

the Cancer Education Programme. For those with a chronic illness support is available through the LongTerm Conditions Education Programme, and for those not wishing to take part in a structured education programme support is available on the Health and Wellbeing Days. The aim of all these groups is to enable the patient, and to maintain a level of independence, ultimately improving quality of life. For those patients approaching the end of their life palliative care is given with compassion to enable the individual to live the best life possible according to their unique circumstances. If you or a loved one needs our help do come and see us or please contact us on 01234 352015, email linda.byer@bdc-hospice. org.uk or visit our website www.bedforddaycarehospice.org.uk for more information’.

Can you make a difference? If you have just 1 hour to spare a week then you can!

Friends for Life are a registered charity which provides friendship and company to residents in Bedfordshire care homes. We are looking for more volunteers to become personal befrienders, who can offer time, friendship and company to those that need it the most. It’s a very flexible role, which fits around existing commitments and makes a huge difference to elderly residents that receive few, if any visitors. It can involve chatting, reading, going out for a coffee or walk in the park. If you are interested in finding out more about volunteer befriending, we would love to hear from you.

BOOK

review A Lily in the Light by Kristen Fields

A child going missing is every parent’s worst nightmare. And many books have been written with this as the main plot device, as the parents try to cope with events that follow. However, this debut novel approaches it from a different angle. Esme is 11 years old and for her, ballet is life. She is on the brink of every young ballerina’s dream as she is told that she is ready to go ‘en pointe’. But this joy is snatched from her one evening as the family gather to enjoy a meal. Suddenly, and inexplicably, Esme’s four-yearold sister Lily disappears. The family starts to fall apart, but as readers we experience this through the eyes of Esme, not her parents. In the second half of the novel the action switches to Paris eight years later where Esme is performing as a ballerina. We learn of the intervening years. How Esme felt that she lost so much more than a sister; she lost her parents too. She has used dance to take herself away from it all. Until she receives a phone call from her older sister, on the other side of the Atlantic. Are the family about to learn of Lily’s fate, and how will they bring themselves together, healing divisions and unspoken accusations?

Late Night The era of the romantic comedy seems to have died off, which is a shame, and been replaced by more risqué or bromance comedies. Late Night isn’t a romcom but it has the feel of one. It has the very predictable story arc reminiscent of a romcom, you are never in any doubt about where we are going to end up, and it has the light comedy between two main characters that we always see in that genre. Emma Thompson and Mindy Kaling have a terrific chemistry that really makes this film one of the best comedies for ages, though they are ably assisted by some excellent supporting characters who make the film feel more than just a two person show. Late Night is a very light comedy, though it does hit some high dramatic points at some time, but this makes a pleasant surprise these days. Maybe it is because it is such a breath of fresh air compared to most comedies these days but I enjoyed this a lot and found myself laughing more than I expected. This isn’t going to set the film world on fire but it is definitely well worth a watch.

Socialising PUPPIES AND KITTENS Socialisation describes puppies and kittens having pleasant encounters with different people, animals and situations, so that they learn to react appropriately to these things in the future. Puppies and kittens with poor early life experiences are likely to grow into fearful adult dogs and cats, with an increased risk of having behavioural problems.

WHEN IS THE CRITICAL PERIOD FOR PUPPIES AND KITTENS TO BE SOCIALISED? The critical period in which puppy and kitten brains need to be exposed to a wide variety of experiences is between 3 and 12 weeks of age in puppies and 2 to 7 weeks in kittens.

WHAT SORT OF THINGS SHOULD PUPPIES AND KITTENS BE EXPOSED TO DURING THIS TIME? Some of the things that puppies and kittens should get used to include: • General household noises (vacuum cleaner, washing machine, doors closing, taps running, cooking noises) • Gentle handling by a variety of people (men, women, older children) • Gentle brushing and checking of ears, eyes, mouth, paws and tummy • Other animals of the same species

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR POTENTIAL PET OWNERS? Most puppies and kittens go to their new homes towards the end of the socialisation period. This means that we are reliant on the breeders of these pets to have provided good socialisation environments. Puppies and kittens that have been reared in sheds or pens away from the rest of the house are unlikely to settle easily into a family home in the future. If you are rehoming a pet, don’t be afraid to ask to see where the pet has been reared.

WHAT ABOUT HAND-REARED PUPPIES AND KITTENS? Sadly, sometimes puppies and kittens are orphaned and have to be hand reared. It is very important to take advice on socialising these babies from a very early age, to make sure that they grow up to be well-rounded, confident pets.

GARDENING

WHITEFLY Whitefly species within the UK are commonly found on hornbeam, azalea, privet and rhododendron. These whiteflies are also associated with, and attack, other hosts such as hazel, beech, birch, false acacia, lime and maples Young, vigorous plants, or those heavily fertilised with nitrogen, are most severely affected. Common noticeable symptoms are an abundance of white, waxy material covering leaves and fronds and a sugary substance called “honeydew produced by the leaf-sucking insects.

Excessive dark sooty mold on leaves or fronds typically grows on the honeydew. An infestation rarely kills healthy plants, but can be disfiguring and cause some damage and/or plant decline. The presence of the white waxy substance, excessive sooty mold and honeydew often appears to be more of a concern or nuisance to property owners. Damage to plants also results from the effects of feeding upon young tissue, which weakens and distorts new growth. Whiteflies are difficult to control. The immature stages are small and difficult to detect. Whiteflies develop quickly and when adults emerge, they rapidly become distributed over

an entire tree or move to other available host plants. In addition, chemical control programs directed at the pest often have limited success as two life stages; the egg and pupa, are tolerant of most insecticides. Winter washes based on spray oil plus a residual insecticide are used on fully dormant trees applied as a spray or brush to kill overwintering eggs. Synthetic insecticides provide reasonable control of whiteflies feeding in protected situations such as rolled or curled leaves, in galls or on the higher branches as these are absorbed by the plant tissues and poison the sap whiteflies feed upon.

Susan

B L AC K- E Y E D

You might not know its name, but you are probably familiar with the Rudbeckia. A late summer perennial daisy. It’s sometimes called Coneflower or Black-eyed Susan.

It flowers from early August to late September and I find it a valuable addition to the late summer garden. It does particularly well in full sun in rich, well-drained soil. You can sow them as annuals indoors in spring to set out after frost or plant as perennials in spring or autumn. Divide every 3 to 4 years and deadhead to avoid selfseeding, though personally I see self-seeding as a bonus trait in a plant! Mildew can be an issue on the foliage but can be avoided if you don’t overcrowd the plants. Watch the young foliage because slugs and snails find it tasty. Once the plants are established this isn’t a problem. Rudbeckia ‘Golden compass’ produces masses of classic bright yellow and black Rudbeckia flowers on a bushy plant. It grows up to 70cm in height and can be grown from seed as a halfhardy annual or a short-lived hardy perennial. Rudbeckia fulgida is the classic ‘Black-eyed Susan’, with sunflower-yellow flowers and a very black central cone. It does better in damper ground than many of the varieties so choose this one if your garden is less well-drained. 52

I love Rudbeckia ‘Prairie glow’. It is a stunning plant and good for adding height as it grows to 1.5m. Its huge 6cm diameter flowers have warm orange petals with yellow tips. Rudbeckia ‘Irish eyes’ is a more unusual variety with a yellowish rather than brown cone, as well as yellow florets. It repeat flowers from July through to October. If your soil is on the dry side, try Rudbeckia fulgida ‘Deamii’. It produces shining, golden flowers with jet-black cones from early September to late October and into November. It has slightly smaller flowers, but they are lovely, and abundant. Rudbeckias naturally grow in dry savannahs, grassland prairies and in the glades of rocky upland forests across North America but they have become a much-loved bushy stalwart of the herbaceous border and will delight from late summer right through the autumn. Happy gardening.
