The Bedford High Street Showcase is June 2nd – enjoy local businesses showcasing their services all day along the high street, music, dancing, facepainting, funfair rides and more. For All Volunteering

E

very June, organisations have an opportunity to thank their volunteers for their hard work and support helping their local community.

Since their launch, a year ago, they have worked with 26 individuals, one of whom says – “I had had so many knock backs because of my criminal record that I would shake just at the thought of going to an interview or induction. Thanks to the support received from CRB I am now in full time paid employment”

In Bedfordshire, Community Voluntary Service has the pleasure of helping to match potential volunteers with organisations.

Linda, was a client of Community Led Initiatives (CLI), just 18 months ago. Now she loves being a volunteer with them, supporting people to overcome social isolation and other difficult issues.

The theme for this year’s Volunteers Week is ‘Volunteering for All’ so here are some highlights from the diverse range of volunteers. Anne volunteers with Friends for Life Bedford. She worked in care before losing her eyesight. She has now befriended three residents in Care Homes and through her, these residents have grown in confidence and self-esteem knowing, each day that someone is thinking of them and cares about them. David, is a new addition to the volunteer team at The ReUse Centre. He had two major medical setbacks before visiting us and now David is enjoying being at the recently accredited ‘Investors in Volunteers’ charity. Companions Real Bread specialises in providing opportunity and support to ex-offenders of all ages and backgrounds, who volunteer with them. 4

Bedford and District Cerebral Palsy Society (BDCPS) recruit volunteers as young as 13 years old and this year, the BDCPS Volunteer of the year award will go to someone who started volunteering with them at just 14 years old. CVS has around 900 local people registered ranging from ages 12 to 79 and we know, that volunteering IS for all and that organisations in Bedfordshire are making fantastic differences in our community through embracing volunteers from all walks of life and situations. If you are interested in volunteering, visit our website at cvsbeds.org.uk/volunteering Organisations mentioned in the article above have volunteer opportunities listed on p.62 Email : volunteering@vsbeds.org.uk Tel :01234 354366 Twitter@volunteerbeds FB CVS Volunteering Bedfordshire.

COMMUNITY

Council news

‘Give a Hand Up, Not a Hand Out’

From this week, posters about alternative ways of giving will be going up across Bedford town centre. Bedford Borough Council has received reports from local businesses and residents about aggressive begging in our town centre. In response the Community Safety Partnership has launched a poster campaign, working with the Council, Bedfordshire Police, Bedford BID, and the voluntary sector. The poster urges people to ‘Give a hand up, not a hand out’. The aim is to raise awareness of the wide range of local charities who work to help homeless people, and the good that they could do to offer lasting change with donations from local people. If you think someone is homeless and wish to refer them to support services, please go to www.streetlink.org.uk; this is a national service to help connect people to local services.

Funding Boost for Wellbeing Hub at The Higgins Bedford The Higgins Bedford, the town’s museum and art gallery, will offer wellbeing activities to the borough’s residents after receiving funds from local grantmaker, The Harpur Trust. The Harpur Trust has donated £25,105 to the organisation, which will support a year-long project to further develop a programme of activities to improve the physical and mental wellbeing of local people. A programme and range of activities that actively encourages and supports wellbeing is being brought into The Higgins Bedford. These include Yoga, Tai Chi, Table Tennis, walking, creative workshops, gardening and reminiscence sessions, building on the success of initiatives by the Council’s Sport Development Team including ‘Mindful Sport’ sessions. Thanks to the support of The Harpur Trust, all activities will be offered at low or no cost to participants.

Resurfacing Local Roads at No Cost to Local Taxpayers Several roads in Bedford Borough including Knights Avenue and Highbury Grove, Tyne Crescent, Brunel Road, Queens Drive, and Great Barford High Street are set to be resurfaced, at no cost to the Council. These roads have recently had resurfacing works carried out by a contractor, but after inspections carried out by the Council, it has been agreed that some of the work was not of an acceptable quality. The work will be done throughout May and June. 6

Alistair Burt, your Local MP... PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE

I

have had a number of constituents ask about planning policy and the proposed revisions to the National Planning Policy Framework, which provides a comprehensive approach for planners, developers and councils to build more homes, more quickly, in the places where people want to live. This major overhaul to the Framework, the first in six years, includes a new housing delivery test, greater freedom for building on brownfield land and a standardised method for assessing local housing needs. I thought it might be of interest to lay out some of the key points in my BedsLife column. There is also more detail on my website.

8

Housing Delivery Test – this will be an annual measurement of housing delivery performance to be made by local authorities responsible for plan-making. The HDT will be a percentage measurement of the total net homes delivered over a three year period divided by the total number of homes required over a three year period. It will help authorities to focus on driving up the number of homes actually delivered in their area. Maximising the Use of Land – the new Framework is clear that local plans should make as much use as possible of brownfield land, as well as under-utilised land and buildings. The revised Framework stipulates that authorities should avoid building homes at low densities in areas of high demand and instead pursue higher-density housing in accessible locations. By maximising the use of land, the Government will ensure that the homes our country needs can be built while maintaining strong protections for the Green Belt and other protected areas.

SERVICES Protecting the Environment – revisions to the Framework will align it with the Government’s 25 Year Environment Plan. The new Framework stipulates that plans should allocate land for development with the least environmental or amenity value and take a strategic approach to maintaining and strengthening networks of habitats. The Framework also advises on the protection of ancient woodland, this will ensure that these irreplaceable areas are not lost for future generations and it goes into some detail with regard to reducing other tree destruction. Local Housing Need Assessment – a new standardised approach to assessing housing need will be introduced with new measures to make the system of developer contributions clearer, simpler and more robust. Affordable Housing – the need for discussions about infrastructure and affordable housing will take place at the pre-application stage of planning permission to encourage early engagement on

these issues. Where the need for affordable housing is identified, planning policies should specify the type of affordable housing required. Local Plans – these are a key part of the government’s comprehensive programme of planning reform and targeted investment so that the homes local communities need are built by ensuring that local authorities set out how and where they expect to meet residents’ needs for new homes. Most councils have seized the opportunity that localism presents, and both Central Beds and Bedford Borough Authorities have had consultations running as they have prepared their plans. I am confident that the reforms to planning outlined in the draft NPPF will build on the progress which the Government has already made, which includes a £25 million Planning Delivery Fund to help speed up planning decisions, and delivering more than 1.1 million homes since 2010.

Money Matters

By Martin Lewis

Finding the best deals for

T

here’s a collective ‘GRRRRR’ from parents about holiday price hikes when term ends – the cost of flights, hotels and package holidays always seems to rocket. Yet the law’s plain. You can’t take kids out of school for unauthorised vacations without being fined. Fortunately, some simple tricks can help you fight back and turn the tables on sky-high prices for family trips abroad – and with summer looming, this is the time of year they’re most needed. Here are four to get you started: • Booking a package holiday? The last two weeks of summer are usually cheaper. If you’re looking for a sunny getaway in a traditional holiday resort, a good oldfashioned package may still smash DIY holidays – see our Cheap Package Holidays guide online for tips. • It is worth waiting until the last two weeks of summer if you can. Travel body ABTA says prices drop rapidly at the end of August/early September – likely because most people want to go as soon as they can 10

summer holidays

• Cheap villas can undercut hotels – price hikes are smaller and owners more willing to haggle. Big family groups may need multiple hotel rooms. So instead, look at villas and apartments. Plus while villa prices rise in the summer, they don’t always climb by quite as much as a package holiday and negotiation is often possible. Here’s how it worked for me: Direct booking sites let you quickly search for holiday rentals – see full help in our Cheap Holiday Rentals guide. Be careful though: if you book directly with an owner, there’s less protection. That’s a few tips to get you started – but remember, DON’T feel under pressure to spend on an all-out foreign holiday if you can’t afford it. There’s plenty of cheap and free fun to be had in the UK, and what your kids really value is time with you... Martin Lewis is the Founder and Chair of MoneySavingExpert.com. Carers Week June 1th-17th 2018

Carers in Bedfordshire are especially reaching out to male carers, holding a Dads group and encouraging male carers to join in with local activities and groups, such as Men in Sheds, to keep them connected within in the community.

L

ocal charity, Carers in Bedfordshire, are inviting local carers, services and businesses to come together during Carers Week to celebrate the vital contribution made by carers across the county.

Please do keep an eye out for Carers in Bedfordshire ambassadors who will be out and about with information stands, at local supermarkets such as Sainsbury’s in Clapham and Biggleswade, GP practices, Bedford and Luton & Dunstable hospital.

This June, Carers Week focuses on how communities and organisations can support carers to stay Healthy and Connected. Alongside their regular groups and training programmes for carers, Carers in Bedfordshire will be hosting celebrations and awareness raising events.

Helen Satterthwaite, CEO of Carers in Bedfordshire, said: “I’m particularly pleased that we are supporting male carers this Carers Week. Men who care are far less likely than women to tell others about their caring role, and come forward for support. We would encourage men who are caring to step forward this Carers Week; we’re here to help”

On Saturday 9th, the Stitch in Time conference for people who are worried about support for their parents will take place at the Pilgrims Centre on Brickhill Drive, Bedford, in partnership with Oxalis Health Coaching. Special guest speakers will address housing, finances and wills, dementia, care and communication.

he overall aims of Men’s Health Week are to heighten awareness of preventable health problems for males of all ages and support men and boys to engage in healthier lifestyle choices / activities. Each year there is a theme and this year the focus of the week will be on men and diabetes. Did you know that men are more likely to get diabetes and more likely to suffer complications? They are also more likely to face amputation as a result of diabetes and more likely to die from it! MHW gives everyone (health professionals, service providers, sporting bodies, community groups, employers, policy makers, the media, churches, individuals ...) an opportunity to encourage men and boys to take better care of their health and to seek help or treatment at an early stage. If you would like to help support the week or find out more information please visit https://www. menshealthforum.org.uk/mhw You can also find helpful information about men’s health issues on the NHS Choices website https://www.nhs.uk

Senior Snippets Keeping a Healthy Heart

1. Get active. The heart is a muscle and it needs exercise. Keeping fit not only benefits your physical health, it improves your mental health and wellbeing too. 2. Cut down on salt. Too much salt can cause high blood pressure, which increases the risk of developing coronary heart disease. Avoid crisps, salted nuts, canned and packet soups and sauces, baked beans, ready meals 3. Watch your diet. A healthy diet can help to reduce the risk of developing heart disease. Try to have a diet containing plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, oily fish and wholegrain bread, pasta and rice. 4. Manage your weight. Carrying extra weight as fat can greatly affect your health and increases the risk of life-threatening conditions such as coronary heart disease and diabetes

5. Get your blood pressure and cholesterol levels checked People with high blood pressure run a higher risk of having a stroke or a heart attack. High levels of cholesterol in the blood can increase your risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, and circulatory disease. 6. Recognise the early signs of coronary heart disease. Tightness or discomfort in the chest, neck, arm or stomach which comes on when you exert yourself but goes away with rest may be the first sign of angina, which can lead to a heart attack if left untreated. ach generation has its stories. As we go through life we find that the past takes on new significance. Everything we do is influenced by the lessons we learn throughout our lives and we begin to reflect on how our experiences and relationships have shaped the person we are today. More and more of us are beginning to feel that it is important to pass on our own story to future generations in the form of a written legacy. Imagine how wonderful it would have been to hold in your hands a piece of writing by one of your own grandparents?

OVER 30 YEARS EXPERIENCE

FREE QUOTATON

June 27th 2018 is National Writing Day. Why not make that the day you begin to write your legacy? Whether it is the story of your whole life, or just a collection of poems or memoirs of significant times or events, each piece of writing will give your family and descendants some insight into your life, your times and your character. What greater gift can you give them, than the benefit of your experience and the wisdom that comes from a life well lived. It may just help them to make sense of their own world. Book

Review Interview with the Vampire

by Anne Rice Most people are familiar with the vampire myth as originally written by Bram Stoker in the 19th century. A blood thirsty monster whose sole aim is to kill, and perhaps transform his victims into vampires. For 70 years this was pretty much how vampires were perceived, until Anne Rice published her seminal gothic novel in 1976. Daniel, a young reporter is approached by a mysterious man who offers to tell him his life story. The man is in his 20s and yet seems melancholy beyond his years. And Daniel soon learns why, as the man – Louis – tells a story that begins in the year 1791 in New Orleans. Devastated by the death of his brother, Louis gives up on life and at this low point he meets an enigmatic young man named Lestat – who turns out to be a vampire seeking a companion. With his permission he turns Louis into a vampire and the two embark on a lonely life moving from city to city and continent to continent under the cover of darkness. Known for her gothic style, it is Rice’s love of her hometown of New Orleans that comes through in this wonderfully evocative novel.

Review Avengers: Infinity War

It has taken 10 years and 18 films but Marvel have finally reached the point they have been aiming for pretty much from the beginning. Infinity War is the culmination of the infinity gems storyline that has been laid since the first Thor and Captain America movies.

J&D WINDOW CLEANING SERVICES BEDFORD Over 25 years experience... • Traditional window cleaning • Window cleaning using our safety reach pole system • Domestic & commercial cleans • Guttering • Facia • Driveway • Conservatories/Conservatory roofs

Infinity War sees the bad guy in the background, Thanos, finally come fully into the limelight as he attempts to collect all the Infinity Gems to create a weapon that he can use to create order and balance in the universe… by wiping out 50% of its living creatures. As our heroes, every single one of them from The Avengers through Dr. Strange to the Guardians of the Galaxy, uncover his plan they unite to try and stop him. This third Avengers film is a bombastic, Hollywood action movie that hits the ground running from the very opening sounds and doesn’t let you breathe again until it finishes. It keeps dodging and diving, keeping you unsettled and off balance all through its 140+ minutes. It is a near perfect action/superhero movie from start to finish, some feat considering the number of heroes involved! Avengers Infinity War is a terrific film, roll on the next 10 years!

Shrek

Coming to MK Theatre this July!

An interview with Laura Main who plays Fiona in SHREK Q Can you give a brief overview of the story of Shrek and your character, Princess Fiona? Shrek is the story of a misunderstood ogre who has lived a solitary life until a talking donkey befriends him. They go to meet an egomaniac Lord, who sends them on a quest to rescue a princess locked up in a tower – and that’s where I come in. Princess Fiona has read all the fairytale books and is waiting for her handsome prince to rescue her to live happily ever after. So, when an ogre turns up, it’s not as she had planned. But she is hiding a secret and is not your average fairyland princess. Shrek is about being true to yourself and celebrating yours and others’ uniqueness. Q How is it performing in such an iconic role, in such a well-loved story? It’s lovely. All of the characters are so well known and loved that there’s an immediate connection for the audience in the warmth that is felt for them all. The audience smile and laugh lots. It’s a joy to be involved in.

Q How are you and your character similar? I love how fiery and feisty Fiona is – as a Scot, I can be both of those things too! I love how there is so much more to Princess Fiona than just trying to look attractive in a dress, I think that’s a great message for young girls. Q Without giving too much away, are there any moments in particular we should look out for in the show? I particularly enjoy opening Act 2 in a song that involves tap dancing with giant rats! And a big favourite for audiences is the 14ft dragon – not that you have to look out for her, you can’t miss her!

Performances: Wed 25th July – Sunday 5th August Evenings 7pm, Matinees 1pm, 2.30pm & 5pm Tickets: from £17.50 Box Office: 0844 871 7652* Groups Hotline: 0333 0095 939 Access Booking: 0800 912 6971* Online Booking: ATGTICKETS.COM/MiltonKeynes* *A transaction fee applies. My cat is losing weight is it just “old age”?

U

nexplained weight loss is usually caused by illness. Older cats are at increased risk of developing a range of illnesses, but don’t worry – we can diagnose and treat these illnesses in all cats, regardless of their age.

Diabetes

Affected cats usually lose weight despite having a big appetite and tend to drink a lot more. Diagnosis requires a blood test, and treatment usually requires injections of insulin. Some cats in the early stages of type II diabetes may be managed with a special diet instead.

Arthritis

Cats with arthritis will often have muscle loss around the hindquarters and be less keen to jump up onto furniture. Anti-inflammatory medication relieves discomfort and encourages cats to use their legs properly again and build the muscle back up. Physiotherapy can also be helpful.

Dental disease

Sore teeth or gums will make eating difficult and weight loss may result. Extracting broken or loose teeth may be necessary, and gum disease may be managed with anti-inflammatories and antibiotics.

Overactive thyroid

An overactive thyroid sends the cat’s metabolism into overdrive, resulting in weight loss despite an increased appetite. Affected cats may also have poor coat condition, diarrhoea or restlessness. This condition is diagnosed with a blood test, and usually treated with liquid or tablet medication. Other treatments (such as diet change, surgery or radiation therapy) may be more suitable in some cases.

Kidney disease

Cat with kidney disease may have increased thirst, reduced appetite, vomiting, and weight loss. Kidney disease can often not be cured but diagnosing it at an early stage (usually with blood and urine tests) is important. By altering the diet to give the kidneys less work to do, and using medication, we can slow down the progression of the kidney disease and allow cats to live a good quality of life, often for many years.

Summary

There are many reasons why an older cat may begin to lose weight. At Acorn House we have a team of caring and experienced veterinary surgeons and nurses to help you to help your pet.

GARDENING

Silver Leaf

S

ilver leaf (Chondrostereum purpureum) is a world-wide fungal disease found in temperate climates. Apple, pear, cherry, plum, poplar, willow, hawthorn, laburnum, rhododendron and rose species are all susceptible to attack. In addition, the fungus can move between different host plants. For example, silver leaf on peach will also cross-infect apple etc. The initial stages of decay appear as a reddishbrown stain. As decay advances the stain disappears and the wood becomes bleached. In the final stages of decay, wood is dry, light in weight, and white-mottled to pale yellow in colour. The characteristic symptom of silver leaf is a silvery sheen on the foliage, fungal toxins, and enzymes in the sap produced by the silver leaf fungus damage

leaf cells. Light reflects through these damaged cells giving a silvery effect to infected foliage. Leaves over the whole tree may be silvered if the fungus enters through a large wound Bracket-like leaf shaped fruiting bodies form on dead wood, the fruiting bodies produce spores which are carried by wind and enter wounds caused by pruning, mechanical/animal damage and may eventual kill the plant. Control is with pruning infected limbs in the growing season with clean tools which are then disinfected after. Plant vigour is an important factor in increasing resistance to attack and/or reducing severity of symptoms. Keep vigour high by by fertilisation, watering and mulching. Phosphite sprays and/ or soil drenches to stimulate tree vitality are also recommended. Tree which have succumbed totally should be removed along with the stump.

Control is with pruning infected limbs in the growing season with clean tools which are then disinfected after.

BARTLETT TREE EXPERTS A Very Brown Hedge Indeed Aphids are one of the most common and troublesome of all garden insect pests. They attack a large number of garden plants throughout the country and are recently causing much disfigurement to ornamental conifer hedges. Commonly known as Greenfly and Blackfly, these aphids feed on hedges, sucking the sap of the plant and can spread several viruses, causing severe dieback. Cypress Aphid is currently troublesome and pre-dominantly affects conifer hedging. Damage inflicted on conifer hedges by the aphid Cinara cupressi is severe and can lead to large brown patches on the hedge. This leads to localised foliage death, reducing the aesthetic look of the hedge. As the aphid is active from May to October it is important to catch this problem early and apply treatments to stop its spread. At the first sign of brown patches call us for a free consultation and professional advice.

Tropical Totally

T

he ‘greenhouse effect’ is an environmental hot topic. And it’s true that despite the grim winter of 2017-18 we’ve generally been experiencing milder conditions in recent years.

If you like to experiment with more exotic plants, it’s a little risky; one hard winter can wipe out a tender specimen. But between now and September there’s every chance that many tropical plants will survive if planted out in our gardens. They need a sunny sheltered spot, like the one you would choose for petunias, tobacco plants and rose beds. Try Cannas. They have luxuriant broad spear-shaped leaves, which can be deep green, purple or even striped with orange or yellow. They produce vibrant flowers which look like gladioli but better! Or how about planting scarlet dahlias like ‘Bishop of Llandaff’, which also sports attractive bronze foliage. A big clump of African marigolds provides a blaze of fiery colour. Or try tender perennial salvias in colours which range from magenta through to scarlet and deep purples and blues. They won’t survive the first 52

winter frosts but they an easy to propagate from shoot-cuttings which can be over-wintered in a cool greenhouse ready for the following spring. Verbena bonariensis produces tall wands of dainty lilac flowers. They self-seed freely, which is great if you consider that a bonus in a plant (I do) but maybe avoid this one if self-seeding bothers you. You could even try a banana plant. The variety “Musa Banjo” is wonderfully architectural, and though it does not produce fruit it will create impact. Plant in a large pot and let its fan-like leaves create fabulous shadows on the patio. It hails from Japan originally and loves sunshine, but it is hardy to -6C so perfect for the suburban UK climate. Do note that in winter the leaves naturally die back and turn brown. I thought I’d killed mine the first year, but the leaves grow back quickly in the spring. The Honey Bush (Melianthus major) is a terrific half-hardy foliage specimen with its 50cm long greygreen deeply serrated leaves, which look as though they’ve been cut with pinking shears. Some of these plants will survive a British Winter with protection but it’s probably best to treat your ‘tropical’ border as a temporary display. Experiment and have fun creating your very own suburban rainforest.

Visitor In Blackwood Grove Visitor can best be described and ET the game. The basic premise of an alien being stuck on Earth and being helped by a kid while having government agencies trying to get it first is very reminiscent of ET. In this game the alien and the kid work together while the other players (3-5) play the government agencies trying to get to the alien. Luckily the alien had a forcefield around his crashed spaceship that stops them from getting to him, but it also stops the kid from helping as well so he has to try and tell the kid how to get things through the forcefield. The alien comes up with a rule, say anything made of metal, and as each player tries an object from their hand of cards lets them know whether or not it passed through. Agents lay them face down while the kid, at first, lays his face up. All of them are trying to be the first to work out what will go through. This is a quick game that is a lot of fun to play, and the more crazy your rule the more fun it can be looking at confused faces!

Volunteering for All Our opportunities this month relate to the organisations featured in the Volunteering for All article in this edition of Bedslife. We believe, we have opportunities to suit anyone who wants to volunteer and we celebrate and thank all those who give their time to Bedfordshire communities. The Reuse Centre has a whole range of opportunities for those wanting to make a difference in their local community as part of a friendly team based in the centre of Bedford. You could help in the warehouse, with deliveries and collections, recycling of furniture and IT, retail in shop or online sales, or reception work. Community Led Initiatives are looking for volunteer mentors for one-to-one and group mentoring services to people who want to move away from socially-excluding behaviour. You will need a committed approach and the confidence to build relationships based on the belief in people’s ability to change. Companions Real Bread CIC needs volunteers to support the work of their commercial real bread baker involving duties such as baking, customer service, washing up, cleaning and delivery. The CIC works with ex-offenders, and volunteers should have a positive, non-judgmental approach and a belief in the capacity to change and move forward.
