Two local groups have been meeting weekly at The Higgins Bedford and are showcasing their work in this exciting new display. ‘Art-Activitea’, run by Tibbs Dementia Foundation, offers a variety of creative activities, alongside support, good company and refreshments. ‘Brushstrokes’, a group supported by The Stroke Association and the NHS, has encouraged participants to use painting and drawing to aid recovery from strokes and has highlighted the importance of supporting each other and togetherness.

WORKS ONGOING ON MANTON LANE Improvement works are ongoing on Manton Lane as part of Transporting Bedford 2020; the £18 million project to cut traffic congestion and improve journeys across the town. The latest phase will: • Make improvements to the operation of the existing traffic signals at the junction of Brickhill Drive/Manton Lane. • Install three-way traffic lights at the junction with Bedford Modern School. • Widen the road to ease the flow of traffic on Manton Lane. During term time, works have been restricted to between 9.30am – 3.30pm, which will be extended during the school holidays to 8am – 6pm. This phase of works is expected to be completed by late Autumn. Further works to install a footbridge over Manton Lane, and wider improvement works around the Manton Lane/ Clapham Road and Paula Radcliffe Way/Great Ouse Way roundabouts will follow at a later date.

THE JOURNEY FROM BUNYAN TO THE BRICKWORKS The Journey from Bunyan to the Brickworks explores the journeys of pride, inspiration and hope made by Bunyan, who was imprisoned and persecuted for his beliefs, alongside the difficult journeys made by those who came to Bedford after the Second World War to work at The London Brick Company. Many people have found inspiration in the life story of John Bunyan, who remained steadfast to his beliefs in spite of persecution and imprisonment. Many have been inspired by his most famous published work, The Pilgrim’s Progress which charts the story from despair to hope through faith. 4

This story is mirrored in stories of those that travelled to Bedford in the wake of the Second World War to work at the brickworks. Many fled poverty, unemployment and persecution. Working conditions were challenging, but many made new lives in Bedford. A large ‘stained-glass’ effect window, in the style of the stunning windows in the Bunyan Meeting church, forms the centre-piece of the exhibition. Films, recordings and objects collected, help to explore the stories of individuals that worked at the brickworks. The exhibition is the result of a collaborative Heritage Lottery funded project between John Bunyan Museum and the Bedford Chronicles. Free entry.

ITH AN EVENING W

TERRY WAITE

There aren’t many better ways to spend an evening than to be with Terry Waite. I was lucky enough to be among guests recently at the Lebanese Embassy when Terry was being presented with an award for his immense contribution to humanitarian work throughout his life. And richly deserved. That we were in the Lebanese Embassy should strike a chord with readers who remember Terry’s captivity, and you would appreciate the significance of the location. Terry spent five years in solitary confinement as a hostage in Beirut in the middle of the worst of the civil war there. He had gone to seek the release of hostages on behalf of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and found himself kidnapped. He suffered appallingly before his release, and could have been forgiven for a lifetime as far as possible away from his pain, but since then he has been a remarkable symbol of reconciliation and Christian forgiveness.

So much so that here he was in the Embassy of the land which had been his prison, quietly recounting enough of his anguish to make his warmth towards Lebanon and its people even more remarkable. It’s an extraordinary human example of how experience can provide a background which allows subsequent activity and words to have an unchallenged impact. When he speaks of forgiveness and reconciliation, or says as he did the other night “suffering need not destroy”, no one can respond that “it’s easy for you to say that”. When he talks of his work with the marginalised in society, that when he meets the homeless he understands what it is like to sleep seemingly endlessly on a floor, he makes us all think differently. We know Terry best around here for his work with Emmaus, the homeless charity that provides a stable home and meaningful work in over thirty places in the U.K., including Carlton. But he is engaged in much else, from supporting those families undergoing the trauma of their loved ones being held captive, to caring for those women and children so often left behind after war, or bringing the divided together such as those in Israel and Palestine. He both encourages us to measure our lives in ways we may not have thought of, but inspires us to find that bit more in the tank to offer, in humbler ways, to our own community. A national treasure – Terry Waite.

June is the Time TO CELEBRATE

The start of June, brings National Volunteering week and a time for Bedfordshire to celebrate all those who are giving their time, voluntarily, to benefit the community around them. In Britain, around 7 in 10 people have volunteered through a group, club or organisation at some point in their lives. We thought it would be good for staff at CVS to celebrate our own diverse volunteering journeys. A quick poll reveals that, unsurprisingly, 100 per cent of us have volunteered at some time in our lives, and seven out of our nine staff members are actively volunteering at present – almost twice the numbers shown in the national picture. Our activities include sports coaching and marshalling, canine clubs and Crufts, local council and neighbourhood watch, fundraising, overseas projects, mental health support, trustee roles, and we even have a Race Maker at Silverstone amongst us. It really demonstrates that there is something for everyone to enjoy in volunteering. 14

CVS staff are testament to the knowledge that volunteering really does help people find the jobs that they like. Seven of us say that we owe our current jobs to the volunteering we were doing prior to applying. For two of us, not only was it the way to the job, but it was also the way out of severe health problems. Abi, volunteers with us. Her first contact with us was a very tearful chat with our Advisor, she was even too afraid to come in the building. Six months on, her anxiety has greatly reduced and she is looking forward to starting a University course in October. If you are interested in taking up one of the many and diverse volunteering opportunities that Bedfordshire’s Voluntary sector has to offer, then do get in touch. Call 01234 354366 or drop in at 43 Bromham Road, Bedford. Our wealth of experience can talk you through the options. Or, you can look online – read more at www.cvsbeds.org.uk/volunteer.

Can you make a difference? If you have just 1 hour to spare a week then you can!

Friends for Life are a registered charity which provides friendship and company to residents in Bedfordshire care homes. We are looking for more volunteers to become personal befrienders, who can offer time, friendship and company to those that need it the most. It’s a very flexible role, which fits around existing commitments and makes a huge difference to elderly residents that receive few, if any visitors. It can involve chatting, reading, going out for a coffee or walk in the park. If you are interested in finding out more about volunteer befriending, we would love to hear from you.

BOOK

review Glass Geishas by Susanna Quinn

Susanna Quinn’s novel, Glass Geishas, is a thriller set in modern day Tokyo – specifically in the notorious Roppongi district, where everything has a price. As the novel opens, Steph, the principal character, is just arriving in Japan with the specific aim of making as much money as possible as quickly as possible. However, her friend Annabel seems to have vanished – and her other friend Julia does not seem to recognise her, let alone welcome her. Something is clearly wrong. Having found Annabel’s abandoned diary, Steph sets out to find out what has happened to her friend and quickly becomes involved in the hostess trade. As the novel moves on, Steph’s own quest is intercut with two other storylines. The first, a set of emails from Chastity, an established hostess, shows the harsh reality of the life that Steph is moving into. The second, the memoirs of Mamasan, owner of one of Roppongi’s oldest clubs, explores how the trade has developed and changed over time. By the end of the novel, these strands are drawn together into a twisting conclusion which will keep you gripped.

Avengers Endgame After more than 10 years of storytelling, across over 20 films, the end of the first phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is here. There is always a feeling in any type of long form storytelling that the end will not live up to expectations, and more often than you would expect the feeling turns out to be correct. This time though the three hours you spend watching Endgame more than rewards you. Endgame starts slowly with lots of character interaction and building. All our heroes talk and plan, they react to what happened at the end of Infinity War and we see how that effects them all. Once they have a plan formulated though everything kicks up a dozen notches and we get a fast moving, exciting, action packed extravaganza. All in all Endgame is one of the most enjoyable romps you will ever see. Anyone who has watched all the MCU movies cannot help but be thrilled with how the creators have managed to tie everything all together in the final part. As the three hours fly by you will experience nearly every emotion and come out of the cinema with a big smile on your face

Saying goodbye TO YO U R P E T Sometimes pets can suffer from untreatable pain or illness, and owners need to think about euthanasia (having a pet “put to sleep”). This is a very difficult decision to make but taking responsibility for a peaceful, painfree death is often the kindest choice an owner can make at the end of their pet’s life.

HOW WILL I KNOW WHEN IT IS TIME? Every case is different and it is important to take your time and talk to everyone who loves your pet. Common reasons for euthanasia include pain that cannot be controlled, poor mobility, breathing problems and conditions causing a lack of appetite or sickness. Never be afraid to ask your vet for advice – in many cases, treatment is available to alleviate these symptoms. If there are no treatment options, at least you can be reassured that you have tried everything to help your pet.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING EUTHANASIA?

of anaesthetic into a vein in your pet’s front leg. As the injection is given, the patient will experience a gradually increasing feeling of drowsiness and will then slip into a deep sleep. The vet continues to administer the injection after the pet has fallen asleep, and this stops the pet’s heart and breathing.

WHERE CAN EUTHANASIA BE CARRIED OUT? Euthanasia can be carried out at the veterinary surgery or at your home. Always tell the receptionist if you think that you might be bringing your pet for euthanasia. This means that you can be booked in at a quiet time of day.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTERWARDS? Some people take their pets home to bury them. Others choose to have their pets cremated, and may wish to have an individual cremation so that their pet’s ashes can be returned. Veterinary staff know just how upsetting it is to lose a beloved pet. Look after yourself and arrange for time off work and to be with family or friends after saying goodbye. The Blue Cross operate a telephone support service for bereaved pet owners which is available on 0800 0966606. .

Euthanasia is usually carried out by injecting an overdose 47

GARDENING

PHYTOPHTHORA ROOT ROT Phytophthora root rot is a widespread disease of landscape plants. Several species of Phytophthora attack the fine absorbing roots of plants and may invade larger roots and the root collar.

The name Phytophthora is a Greek work literally meaning “plant destroyer”. These fungi grow in the cambium and sapwood causing death of the tissue. Loss of water and nutrient absorbing capacity and stored carbohydrate reserves in the root cause a gradual, or sometimes-rapid decline of the above ground portion of the plant. Phytophthora is a water mold therefore diseases caused by these fungi are most common on soils that are poorly drained or receive excessive irrigation. Consequently, root rot is common on newly developed sites where soil is severely disturbed or compacted from construction activities. Phytophthora is also a common disease in nurseries. Decline and death of new plantings may result from outplanting diseased stock. Oaks, Beech, Rhododendron, fruit trees (Prunus, Malus), Cornus, Sugar and Red maple and Zelkova are

particularly prone to collar rot from buried root collars. There are many other trees and shrubs susceptible Symptoms include a reduction in shoot growth; small leaves, thinning of the crown, chlorosis, twig and branch dieback and eventually death. Diseased roots are reddish brown and brittle. Decline occurs over a period of months or years before death occurs. Rapid wilting and death of the entire plant. Leaves turn red then brown and usually remain attached. Phytophthora lesions may extend into the root collar, which causes girdling of the stem and rapid collapse of the crown. Phosphite sprays and/or soil drenches to stimulate tree vitality are recommended Treating surrounding susceptible plants on a preventative basis also is recommended.

GARDENING

sustainably SITTING

One of the great pleasures in life has to be sitting outside on a summer evening, glass of wine in hand, gazing in reverie at your precious plot.

But what are you sitting on? Is your furniture environmentally friendly? What about that lovely decking, or your garden shed? As gardeners we have a responsibility which extends far beyond our boundary. Trees are vital to the planet. They convert carbon dioxide into oxygen and act as environmental filters, offsetting the effects of pollution. They also provide a habitat for birds and animals. Like many gardeners I take a keen interest in environmental matters so it came as a shock when I read recently that that every year our tiny island imports more unsustainably produced wood than anywhere else in the world! A good proportion of this wood is used to make garden buildings, furniture, fencing and decking. I was thrilled, therefore, to read about the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and their certification programme for sustainable produced and sourced wood? 52

The FSC was founded in 1993, in response to public concern about deforestation. The council devised a wood-labelling scheme which allows a product to be traced right back down the supply chain from the consumer to its source. Any product bearing the FSC logo is guaranteed to be from forests which are carefully managed to conserve biodiversity and support local communities. Unfortunately not all garden suppliers stock products which are FSC approved. So we need to demand that they do. The world’s forests are in decline. Some tropical hardwoods are already on the verge of extinction, and temperate forests in the northern hemisphere are also suffering because of unregulated tree-felling. As a gardener and lover of our environment I feel more comfortable knowing that I’m not contributing to the destruction of our planet. If you’re replacing your garden furniture this year, ask to see the FSC certified label.

E AG L E S This season will be remembered for a decent run in the FA Cup exiting away to Telford and a superb run in the FA Trophy only halted by an injury time goal away to Chesterfield. The Eagles were the only step 4 club remaining in the competition as highlighted on 5 live when the draw was made. The fixture pile-up together with injuries, led to inconsistency in the league, that along with over 50 players being used throughout the season. That said, the Eagles finished 4th in the league and qualified for what would normally be promotion playoffs. However, an absurd ruling meant that the Eagles entered the playoffs knowing they would not automatically be promoted even if they won it. The Eagles lost a crazy playoff game away to Corby. Having been 4-0 down they eventually lost 5-3 having missed a penalty and down to ten men during the second half. This much typified the Eagles league form which varied from the bizarre to the brilliant.

There is potential for promotion next season, with key players Dan Walker, Brett Longden and Callum Donnelly already committing to the club. The owners are targeting National League football in the next 5 years and have struck a sponsorship deal with local firm Bright Management. The future is looking Bright for the Eagles!
