his summer, from 26 May to 3 June, Greensand Country, an island of beautiful countryside, which includes the Greensand Ridge stretching from Leighton Buzzard to Gamlingay, will host the first ever Greensand Country Festival.

Taking place across the landscape, the festival will include a number of exciting events, activities, talks, exhibitions and competitions, including guided walks, have-a-go wilderness crafts, family wildlife activities, open air theatre performances and 4x4 adventure challenges. The 9-day festival will be a celebration of everything that people love about Greensand Country, and will showcase our distinctive, beautiful and loved countryside. Claire Poulton, Programme Manager at the Greensand Country Landscape Partnership says: “The Greensand Country Festival is an exciting step forward in promoting the unique history, wildlife and culture of our highly attractive landscape, and will encourage people to visit, enjoy and have a better understanding of Greensand Country. 4

“Working in partnership with businesses and attractions across the landscape, the festival will engage local visitors, people from neighbouring towns and villages, and families who are new to the area, inspiring them to get out into the countryside and explore the many events and activities on offer.” Clophill Heritage Trust, the local voluntary community charity which runs the Clophill Eco Lodges and St Mary’s Old Church, is running a number of events and activities as part of the Greensand Country Festival. Founder Ali Bradbury explains: “We are delighted to be involved in the first festival, and look forward to welcoming new visitors to Clophill, who are keen to discover more of Greensand Country and its impressive landscape.” The Greensand Country Landscape Partnership is led by the Bedfordshire Rural Communities Charity and the Greensand Trust and funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. It is made possible by National Lottery players. Without them we couldn’t fund the project. Alistair Burt, your Local MP... ‘BANK YOUR TREASURE IN THE HEARTS OF YOUR FRIENDS’

I

met Roger Bannister once. I was attending, as Minister of Health, an event in the House of Commons connected with a research based charity. Sitting unassumingly with friends, he greeted the odd visitor to the evening, and chatted to those around him. After saying a brief hello to those who had invited me, I excused myself so I could say a word to a man whose name and exploits I had learned of as a child, and whose reputation, as a distinguished medic and humanitarian, as well as an athlete, was huge. As I approached him, with the usual ‘I’m so sorry Sir Roger, you don’t know me, but….’ he eased himself up and said ‘I do know you, Mr Burt, how nice to see you here’. I lost most of the rest, touched both by astonishment in his reply, and the gentle humility of a man whose running shoes I was genuinely unworthy to lace up. I never forgot that brief encounter, and of course was reminded due to his sad death recently. And then I heard another deeply moving thing about him.

What so moved me about Roger Bannister was the words of his family that ‘he banked his treasure in the hearts of his friends’.

8

I read many obituaries. It’s part of the job. I’ve been lucky enough to have been around political and public life for thirty five years, and understandably those I met who were already well into their careers have been passing on. The obituaries that make me stop and think are often those who achieved extraordinary things as impossibly young men and women in the war, and then went on to long lives occasionally equally remarkable, but often quite straightforward where I suspect they rarely spoke of the heroism which would be headline news today. What so moved me about Roger Bannister was the words of his family that ‘he banked his treasure in the hearts of his friends’. What a wonderful phrase! I imagine it perfectly captures not just such a great man, but many contented people as they reflect on their lives. We are surrounded in western society by demands upon us and our young people to work relentlessly, to achieve, to pursue and admire unrealistic lifestyles and face ridicule and embarrassment for ‘failure’. True happiness rarely follows such a path, and so many of those so called achievers often reveal tragically late in life that they truly miss the depth of relationships with friends, old and new. Banking treasure in the hearts of friends should be the watchword of all. As we live longer, living better might just be measured in differing ways. Roger Bannister may be setting a new pace all over again!

Rt Hon Alistair Burt MP

Money Matters

By Martin Lewis

Life Insurance

A

ll parents want to see their children grow up and flourish. The thought of not being there, and the impact that would have, is almost too unpleasant to bear. Yet 1 in 29 children – a typical class size – lose a parent before they grow up so it is a crucial but often overlooked financial consideration. Life insurance is an insurance policy you take out that’s designed to pay out a lump sum when you die to clear debts, or provide money to live off. There are three main types of policies (other than investment type life assurance plans): 1) Level term life insurance – pays out a set amount if you die during a set time. 2) Mortgage decreasing-term life insurance – aims to clear your mortgage. So as your mortgage debt drops with time, so does the amount it pays out. 3) Whole of life insurance – the policy is mainly about mitigating inheritance tax costs.

The cheapest, easy way to protect your family is level term life insurance

With level term insurance you pay a monthly premium and it pays out a set amount if you die within a set period of time, for example £200,000 if you die within the next 20 years. The more cover you get and the longer the term you want, the more you’ll pay. 10

A rule of thumb is cover 10 times the main breadwinners income

The aim is to have enough cash to cover the lack of income if you’re gone. So if you’ve no partner or children who need the money don’t bother. If you do need cover, it’s important to consider the financial impact if you died. Aim for a lump sum that’s enough to repay any outstanding debt (including a mortgage if you don’t have a separate policy), and provide for outgoings your dependants have. In a couple, even if the one who died wasn’t the main earner, there can be serious knock on effects. Perhaps the higher earner would need to give up some work or pay for childcare. You may have ‘death in service’ cover from your employer, which can reduce the amount you need. Shortening the term cuts the cost, though generally you’d want cover that lasts until children have finished full-time education. CHARITY

A

Being in the fresh air and in green spaces away from difficult situations and bad influences enables the young people to relax and reflect. Being with good consistent role models helps to build their confidence and self-worth. Learning a practical skill and being successful helps them to feel hopeful about their future.

4S is a project of Progressability, a local charity based in Barkers Lane in Bedford.

We are an alternative provision of education and we work with disadvantaged young people from Bedford and the surrounding counties who struggle to cope with mainstream school. We are governed by a group of trustees and the charity is run on Christian principles. Many of our young people struggle with poor mental health - mainly anxiety and depression, and many have learning difficulties such as autism, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and attachment disorders. Some have very difficult situations at home to deal with and many struggle to regulate their emotions and behaviour. Our aim is to support these young people so that they experience more hope, learn to make good choices and have a more positive future. We do this through 1:1 or small group mentoring and by teaching them practical skills such as angling and environmental maintenance. 14

Most of the young people work towards qualifications so they have more opportunities for employment In the future. We have a proven success record in changing the trajectory of the lives of many young people through our intervention. We are part-funded through grants and donations and we are always looking to improve the service that we give. At present we are looking for more trustees for our charity and are particularly interested in those who have a background in either Education or Finance’. If you are interested in finding out more about us or in supporting us in any way please ring Marian Boland on 01234 272101. Senior Snippets Reduce your risk of hospitalisation

A British Red Cross report revealed a startling increase in the level of hospital readmissions with a 22.8% increase since last year with the number of people being readmitted to hospital within 48 hours accounting for one in five. Often, vulnerable people reach a crisis point before they receive support.

Keep physically and mentally active Encourage your relative to keep active where possible. Walking for just five or 10 minutes at a time several days each week is a great way to begin. Keeping the brain active helps to stimulate the connections between nerve cells.

Here are FIVE ways to help keep your loved one out of hospital.

Maintain a healthy diet Appetite diminishes as we age but a diet containing plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, oily fish and starchy foods such as wholegrain bread, pasta and rice is recommended. Extra vitamin D and calcium can combat osteoporosis.

Get a good GP Having an excellent GP is essential but also making sure that older people follow their GP’s direction. Our CAREGivers are trained to spot ‘red flag’ changes in health such as worsening chronic conditions or unused medication. Companionship Loneliness and social isolation are harmful to health, so it’s important to encourage social activities.

Keep hydrated! Hydration is vital, even if they say they’re not thirsty. It is advisable to drink 6-8 glasses of water a day. Home Instead Senior Care, 106A Bedford road, Wootton, Bedford, MK43 9JB. Tel 01234 868820.

CAREGivers Required Do you have a caring & compassionate nature? Then you should talk to us. We are looking for Caregivers to assist the elderly with non-medical services including companionship, home help and personal care in their own home. No experience is required as we provide full training.

The Thing – Infection at Outpost 31 There have been many attempts at making good movie based games, a very large majority of which turn out to be terrible very basic games that sell themselves on the name of the movie. So with that in mind playing a game based on the out and out classic movie The Thing would put real fear into a seasoned game player. The Thing though has taken the basic premise of the movie, alien creature infecting members of an Antarctic station, and integrated the paranoia, the tension and the fear from the movie into a simple game mechanic. One player is an alien, the rest are humans (at least at the start, there are two opportunities for the aliens to take over humans) and trying to survive. The have to explore their base and try and work out who is the alien in human form before escaping by helicopter. Played with more players (I played with 7) leads to more tension and suspicion than you would ever believe possible in a little game. No one trusted anyone else, people outright accused others and some even sowed discord for their own benefit. The Thing is one of the best multi-player games I have ever played.

The next 12 months brings us an array of promise and here are some we wanted to make to you. Book

Review The Private Patient by PD James

At a private clinic in Dorset, Rhoda Gradwyn has booked an operation to remove a serious facial scar – one which she has borne for many years, but ‘no longer has need of.’

YOUR LOCAL EXPERT PLUMBING & DRAINAGE SERVICE No call out charges • Pre-fixed price 24/7 • 365 days a year

Call your local plumber today Bedford & Surrounding Areas

01234 742900

The operation is a success, but by morning Rhoda Gradwyn is dead, and suspicion falls on the staff of Cheverell Manor. Commander Adam Dalgliesh, poet and policeman, is summoned DDR Bedford Bedslife 64x93.indd from London to investigate, and before long finds himself dealing with not one, but two unexplained deaths and a whole host of dark secrets.

Bromham Windows & Home Improvements

This is the latest in James’ Dalgliesh series, and it bears all the familiar hallmarks of the earlier novels – a death in a closed community, a complicated back story and a steady move to the conclusion. As ever, the supporting characters are just as important as Dalgliesh himself – both those on his team and those who inhabit Cheverell Manor – and they are deftly drawn, with real and believable traits. For the reader, the experience is more about contemplation than guesswork – the identity of the killer is revealed three quarters of the way through, and the rest of the novel is concerned with motivation and moral dilemmas.

Review Ready Player One

Ready Player One is based on the bestselling book that was part ode to the 1980’s and part love letter to video games. Spielberg has created a movie that is not only a visual and audible joy, but also has a storyline that, while a bit fantastical, manages to make use of the incredible visuals while also pulling you along in its wake as it flies along. The love for the 1980’s is blatantly apparent in pretty much every single scene and Spielberg has made a film that makes you love it almost as much. Ready Player One is up there amongst the best and most entertaining films released this year. It is funny, it is full of action, it is a drama and a thriller. For once Hollywood has managed to take a much loved book and make a film that should be just as successful as its source. You will need to see it at least twice just to take in everything that is going on, in the foreground as well as the background, and it is more than good enough to make repeat viewing more than well worth it.

Matilda The Musical

Coming to MK Theatre this June

Interview with Tim Minchin

Musical and lyric writer of the show Q What were your priorities when it came to writing the music? Writing musicals is hard, because it’s really easy for them to be cheesy nonsense and with Dahl it felt especially important to avoid this. He was the king of my childhood, and he wrote with this holy trinity of humour, heart and darkness. So primarily I wanted to make sure that when the actors started singing the songs, the audience didn’t feel compelled to slap them! I passionately wanted to avoid a ‘Disneyfication’ of the story. Q What difference does it make to have child actors at the heart of the show? I wrote the songs for children and always crossed my fingers that we could find young performers with the talent to deliver them. It soon became very apparent that we could. I especially love it when people come with quite low expectations of how good a show performed by kids can be, and then have their minds blown.

Q. Do you have a favourite moment in the show? I had to pick one I’d say ‘Quiet’. It’s just this amazing moment when a small child stands in a spotlight with her eyes closed and her arms out, after this freefall of ideas has gone through her brain. And there’s total silence. It comes at the point in the musical where typically you get a big, belting song. But at that point in the story our character just needs peace. Q.If you could have a magical power, like Matilda, what would it be? I would like her ability to read so many books in a week. Especially now I’ve got kids attending new schools, I feel I have a lot to catch up on. But usually I get halfway through a page and fall asleep with the book on my face. So I would love to have Matilda’s ability to vacuum up knowledge! Performances: Tuesday 5 – Saturday 30 June. Evenings 7.30pm, Wed & Sat mats 2.30pm Tickets: from £17.50 Box Office: 0844 871 7652* Groups Hotline: 0333 0095 939 Access Booking: 0800 912 6971* Online Booking: ATGTICKETS.COM/MiltonKeynes* *A transaction fee applies. Is my dog’s flea treatment harming the environment?

F

leas can cause itching, hair loss, skin damage, and anaemia in both pets and people. Once a flea problem is established in the home, it can be extremely difficult to clear, so effective preventative flea treatment is an important part of routine pet care.

Unfortunately, researchers have found that several rivers in the UK contain high levels of the chemical imidacloprid – an ingredient in many spot-on flea products for dogs. The River Great Ouse in Bedfordshire is one of the affected rivers. It is believed that the contamination occurs when dogs that have been treated with spot-on flea treatment swim in the river, and the chemicals wash off into the water.

If the flea treatment is not staying on the dog, it also means that the dog is no longer adequately protected against fleas.

the problems of “washing off”. Families with young children also tend to prefer tablets to spot-ons, so that their children are not in contact with chemicals on the dog’s skin and fur when hugging and stroking their pet.

Pollution of the river with flea treatment chemicals is a bad thing, because it is harmful to the insects and fish that live there. If the flea treatment is not staying on the dog, it also means that the dog is no longer adequately protected against fleas.

These newer, tablet-based flea products tend to be given to the dog once a month, or once every 3 months, depending on the product. Many of them kill fleas faster than the traditional spot-on products. Several of the tablets are effective against ticks and mites in addition to fleas.

For these reasons, it is recommended that dogs that get wet frequently (either from swimming, walking in the rain, or being bathed), avoid these spot-on products. More modern products have been developed in a tablet form, which avoids

Our team of experienced vets, nurses and receptionists would be happy to talk through the different options for flea, tick, mite and worm control in both cats and dogs – call us on 01234 281369 if you would like to find out more. 47

Cankers

ankers are dead sections of bark on branches or main trunks of trees. Bark may be killed by mechanical injuries or fungi and bacteria. Most fungi that cause stem cankers are restricted to bark and xylem tissue that are degraded due to the effects of toxins or secreted enzymes.

plants weakened by environmental stress (drought, waterlogging, salt damage) are more susceptible to attack. Canker diseases may cause extensive damage to trees when they kill all of the bark in a particular area, girdling a branch or main stem. If the trunk is affected, the entire plant may die.

Cankers are dead sections of bark on branches or main trunks of trees. Bark may be killed by mechanical injuries or fungi and bacteria. Most fungi that cause stem cankers are restricted to bark and xylem tissue that are degraded due to the effects of toxins or secreted enzymes.

Vigorous, healthy trees are better able to cope with cankers than are trees in poor health or under stress. Spring or autumn-fertilise to improve plant vitality.

Fungi that cause cankers and also extensively invade the xylem, simultaneously causing wood decay, are termed canker rot pathogens. Generally, canker pathogens are unable to penetrate bark directly but will quickly colonize open wounds inflicted by pruning, frost injury, breakage caused by ice and snow, dead branches, branch stubs, twigs, leaf scars or, less commonly, through leaves and/or insect attack. In addition

Specific recommendations for preventing cankers and minimising damage vary with tree species and nature of the canker. However, all management practices should include the following:

Inadequate soil moisture is the most common stress factor in urban and suburban sites. Mulch and irrigate during drought periods. Correct pruning will help to reduce canker problems. Remove dead and weak branches and those which are rubbing against others creating wounds. Cuts should be made such that no stubs are left and the resulting wound is as small as possible. Sterilise pruning tools between cuts by dipping them in 10% household bleach or 70% alcohol for several minutes.

BARTLETT TREE EXPERTS A Very Brown Hedge Indeed Aphids are one of the most common and troublesome of all garden insect pests. They attack a large number of garden plants throughout the country and are recently causing much disfigurement to ornamental conifer hedges. Commonly known as Greenfly and Blackfly, these aphids feed on hedges, sucking the sap of the plant and can spread several viruses, causing severe dieback. Cypress Aphid is currently troublesome and pre-dominantly affects conifer hedging. Damage inflicted on conifer hedges by the aphid Cinara cupressi is severe and can lead to large brown patches on the hedge. This leads to localised foliage death, reducing the aesthetic look of the hedge. As the aphid is active from May to October it is important to catch this problem early and apply treatments to stop its spread. At the first sign of brown patches call us for a free consultation and professional advice.

Recycling In The Garden

S

econd-hand shops, reclamation yards and even car boot sales can provide an Aladdin’s cave of unusual containers and statues, chimney pots which can be upended to house colourful plants, quirky garden seating and ornaments. Old railway platform seats and seating from boats have been put to use in the past, while DIY enthusiasts have constructed seats featuring little more than a short piece of scaffolding plank resting on two neat piles of old bricks. Funky benches have been made using old tyres at either end supporting seats of painted scaffolding planks. Mosaics and patterns can also be made out of pebbles or broken coloured tiles arranged Roman style. Fallen logs can be used to edge paths, while those on a budget may be more inclined to go for local gravel.

Eye-catching containers can be made out of anything you may otherwise dump, from old food cans painted with brightly coloured weather-resistant paint, to sinks which can house a myriad of rock plants, and teapots, mugs and rusty buckets with holes drilled in the bottom which can be planted up and strategically placed to brighten up the scene. 52

Old wicker baskets can also make good plant pots, stained, varnished and lined with black plastic, while broken pots can be used for a display of rock plants such as sempervivums, surrounded by broken bits of pot. Wine aficionados who are lucky enough to have had their wine delivered in wooden boxes with lovely embossed logos should consider growing salad crops in them. Port boxes can also act as good containers. You can also grow crops in old drawers, weatherproofing the wood first and then drilling holes for drainage and lining the drawers with plastic. You may also have to add corner braces to the drawers to stop the wood from warping, but they will make eye-catching veg containers. Use your own home-grown stems of bamboo, when the canes are green and flexible, or red dogwood, to cut and weave into plant supports. If you want to create an arch which will be smothered in flowering plants, but don’t want to spend a fortune, you can do it cheaply by bending old lengths of metal pipe or builders’ reinforcing bars, which will all be hidden by the climbers.

Important re-signings have come in the form of top try-scorer Dean Adamson along with utility back Rich Lane who picked up the Followers of the Blues try of the season (along with second and third place as well). Plying their trade once again at Goldington Road will be fly half duo Will Hooley and Harry Sheppard, second rowers Will Carrick-Smith and Ed Taylor, back rower Josh Buggea and club captain Michael Le Bourgeois. Bedford are already bolstered with England scrum half Lee Dickson, player/coach Alex Rae, Number Eight Jarad Williams, Fullback Chris Czekaj, and props Sean McCarthy and Ben Cooper who are already contracted for next season. 56

The

T

he season is drawing to a close and the Eagles have four league games to go and lie six points off the playoffs. Since the defeat away at Kempston Rovers, Bedford have won four games and drew one, amassing 13 points from a total of 15, and have put pressure on the sides just above them. Weather caused three postponements so Bedford will play two of their last games on a couple of Thursdays. The postponements meant Bedford had four consecutive games at the Eyrie, all wins. Veteran striker, and Luton Town legend, Paul Benson scored in every match and has put the ball in the net in the last six league home games.

End of season player awards will be held in the clubhouse from 7pm with live Premier League on the big screen. England World Cup games will also be screened and in May, there is a sixes tournament for U16 to U9, 12th/13th May. Latest updates www.bedfordeagles.net FB bedfordtown Twitter @bedfordtown
