BEDFORD BOROUGH PARKS KEEP THEIR GREEN FLAGS FOR ANOTHER YEAR During this year’s Love Parks Week, four of Bedford Borough’s parks have once again won a Green Flag Award recognising them as being among the UK’s very best green spaces. Addison Howard Park, Bedford Park, Harrold-Odell Country Park and Priory Country Park have all once again been awarded the prestigious Green Flag, the mark of quality parks and open space. It has been an exceptionally successful year for our
wonderful country parks with Priory Country Park winning the award for its 18th year in a row, and Harrold-Odell Country Park achieving scores in the highest categories – its best year yet! Two of the Council’s volunteer-managed sites have also been recognised, winning the Green Flag Community Award again following their success last year: Mowsbury Hillfort and the Hill Rise Nature Reserve. If you would be interested in volunteering in one of the Council’s parks and green spaces, please visit www.bedford.gov.uk/volunteering or sign up to the Community Volunteering email bulletin at www.bedford.gov.uk/stayconnected
CAMPAIGN LAUNCHES AFTER SURVEY REVEALS ONE IN FOUR PEOPLE ADMIT TO ‘CAREFULLY’ LITTERING THEIR RUBBISH Bedford Borough Council is joining Keep Britain Tidy to tackle ‘careful littering’. This is the coffee cup left on a window ledge, or the sandwich wrapper abandoned on a park bench. A YouGov survey revealed that more than a quarter of people (27%) admitted to this kind of littering. Keep an eye out for floor vinyls, stickers
and posters in Bedford town centre to tackle this littering behaviour. These will act as a gentle reminder that whether it is ‘carefully’ placed or simply thrown on the floor, it’s #StillLittering. In a trial of this campaign across the country by Keep Britain Tidy and the People’s Postcode Lottery, areas saw the total amount of litter reduced by a fifth. In some areas, the reduction was up to 57%.

VIEWS FROM A L I S TA I R B U R T, YO U R L O C A L M P. . .
There are no good sides to climate change, but there will be one or two opportunities. I’m not a climate sceptic. I accept the immense weight of scientific opinion which recognises the impact of humans on the environment, from its warming since the industrial revolution, to the extraordinary, and rarely discussed in the same terms, impact of excessive population growth. On the latter, when I was born in 1955, the world’s population was under three billion. Should I live to be a hundred, the world is projected to be home to ten billion people. This is an article for another day, but if you want a really scary few minutes, go to the World Population Clock, www.worldometers.info/worldpopulation and watch the figures spin round. I doubt if we have all fully grasped the immensity of change which may be coming to us, from new technology leaving fossil fuels behind for transport and power, to the day to day changes we will need to make. And I’m optimistic for our grandchildren that we will. Two things, one large, and one small, are worth noting. The large one is that the current trend of countries abandoning multi-lateral organisations and solutions, such as international agreements on climate change or weaponry, in favour of bombastic ‘our country first’ proclamations from 6
Please mention bedslife when responding to adverts
China, to Russia and to the US, with many in between, might be reversed as states recognise that only concerted international agreement and action will combat threats which know no boundaries. Unregulated mass movements of people, or the extreme weather we have experienced recently will not fix themselves. The world will need to return to what it achieved after the catastrophes of world war in the twentieth century, a mutual self-regulation and cooperation in many spheres to overcome new challenges. On the smaller, but vital, side, we are going to want to make changes to our own lives, from recycling to travel which will, cumulatively, make a difference. One may be holidays. Whilst I hope air travel benefits from new technologies, in the short or medium term we may be flying less. This should open up more of the U.K., and continental Europe, to train travel with far less environmental impact. Most of our summer holidays have been domestic from choice, with pets, children and friends seeing many different parts of the U.K. and recognising how wonderful it is. Our resorts which boomed during the Victorian age, and for much of the twentieth century, could come back into fashion. Little would strengthen our Union in the U.K. better than greater awareness by all our citizens of the joys of each part of it. Written on the South Coast, with the English Channel roaring.

every installation we carry out!’ So, if you want to make use of your loft space, call Jamie free on 0808 301 9559 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!

VOLUNTEERING
I WANT TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE, BUT I HAVE TOO MANY COMMITMENTS! MEET JENNIE – ONE OF OUR VOLUNTEERS………
I’m a mum of triplets and live a hectic life juggling work and family life. Despite being so busy, I wanted to try and make a difference in my local community. However, with so little time, I wasn’t sure it was possible and I didn’t
know where to start. A chance advert led me to Friends for Life, a charity which recruits and trains volunteers to visit care home residents that receive few, or no visitors. Having recently lost my Mum, I had become aware of how lonely older people can feel as they become more physically and mentally incapacitated. By giving just 1 hour of my time per week, I could make a difference to someone’s life. If I added up all of the time I spent scrolling through social media in a week, rather ashamedly I imagined it was a lot more than this. So that’s how it all began. You receive training, meet other volunteers and are completed supported in the role. It can involve just listening and talking to your resident or you can go out for coffee or a walk (depending on their capabilities). It definitely fills the need I had for making a difference and I hope this shows that if I can fit it in, most people can! If Jennie’s story resonates with you, please get in touch. We have a very diverse group of 70 volunteers supporting 35 homes and we’d love more people to join us and help end social isolation in the elderly.
Can you make a difference? If you have just 1 hour to spare a week then you can!
Friends for Life are a registered charity which provides friendship and company to residents in Bedfordshire care homes. We are looking for more volunteers to become personal befrienders, who can offer time, friendship and company to those that need it the most. It’s a very flexible role, which fits around existing commitments and makes a huge difference to elderly residents that receive few, if any visitors. It can involve chatting, reading, going out for a coffee or walk in the park. If you are interested in finding out more about volunteer befriending, we would love to hear from you.

The MS Therapy Centre provides therapy, information and support to people with multiple sclerosis living in Beds and Northants. We provide physiotherapy, a hydrotherapy pool, oxygen therapy, a specially designed gym and complementary therapies like APS therapy, shiatsu, reflexology, yoga, Bowen technique, pilates and more. We have the only two MS Specialist nurses in the area as Bedford Hospital doesn’t have a specially trained MS nurse. And finally, as our members would agree, the service which is most appreciated is that the Centre is a social hub, providing support and companionship to people with MS, their families and even carers.
We receive no government support or funding whatsoever and it costs £1000 a day to keep the Centre running. We organise fundraising events like a Phillip Kinsella evening on 4 Sep, abseiling on 12 Oct (down the tallest permanent abseil tower in the word!), an Art Exhibition at the Centre on 5-6 Oct, a quiz evening 25 Oct, a swishing event 21 Nov and so on. We are a friendly bunch, so if anyone would like to visit the Centre, is interested in volunteering or contributing or attending or organising an event, please call on 01234 325781 or email fundraising@mscentrebedsandnorthants.com. Stories about the Greek gods have existed for centuries, and in this novel from US author Miller we learn of the story of Circe, a character in Homer’s The Odyssey, but this time told from her point of view. Circe is the daughter of the sun god, Helios, but is considered neither beautiful nor powerful, unlike his other children. Shunned by those around her, including her once devoted younger brother Aeetes, Circe is sent alone to an island where she turns to a mortal, Glaucos, whom she falls in love with. Having discovered the power of witchcraft she brews a potion to turn Glaucos into a god so she can marry him. However, her plans go awry, and her revenge leads her to be hated and despised by both mortals and gods.
BRIDGE ROOFING
Circe has been a fascination for authors since the time of Homer and has influenced such writers as James Joyce and Margaret Atwood. In this novel Miller breathes new life into her, along with other figures such as Medea, Achilles, and Zeus: a mixture of legendary Titans, Olympians, and mortals. Woven into the story are familiar legends such as the Minotaur in the labyrinth, and Icarus, who flew too close to the sun. With such a large cast of characters it would have been helpful if the publishers had provided a crib sheet but this is a story well worth persevering with.

After 9 years our favourite toys have returned to the cinema screens for another adventure, 24 years after they first entranced us. This time the toys go on an adventure with a new toy ‘Forky’ who was made by their owner Bonnie while at school. Forky doesn’t understand he is a toy, he is made from a spork and other odds and ends), and while the toys family are on a road trip he leads Woody and Buzz on a new adventure, meeting new and old friends, in a small town antique shop. Pixar and Toy Story changed the face of animation all those years ago and they show, once again, that they are still the best in the business. Pixar create a film that has depth and emotion that belies its animated status while still having the basic simplicity that entertains children of all ages. Toy Story 4 will be enjoyed by people of all ages because it knows exactly how to pull our heartstrings one moment and then make us laugh our heads off the next. Woody, Buzz et al have become our friends over the years and they have never let us down.

Well-being, mental health and mindfulness are all commonplace words in our schools today. Plans and preparations are being made to heighten awareness of children’s well-being in order to enable equal parity between children’s physical and mental health.
This is because research shows that the things that matter most for positive well-being are our social relationships and good mental and physical health. Recent emphasis in schools has been for children to develop, resilience, perseverance and an ability to learn from setbacks. There is a focus on values such as empathy, compassion and emotional intelligence with others. But how do they achieve this…………….? One of the ways we can start supporting children is by working alongside them in the development of their self- awareness. Giving them opportunities to talk, to gain a sense of who they are, how they fit into the world and how they manage their own self-care. In order to support and create the right environment to talk, we need to be able to listen in a real and genuine way. If we can demonstrate empathy, compassion and acceptance during our interactions we can open pathways for honesty to thrive. ‘To listen in in a way that helps children talk’ and ’talk in a way that helps children listen’ provides a great foundation for nurturing relationships. It enables us to take a step in the right direction for our children and young people to become physically and mentally strong. Lynne O’Neil – Founder of Mind Steps

“KEYHOLE” B I TC H S PAY S The British Veterinary Association recommends that all female dogs are neutered (spayed) unless they are intended for breeding. This not only prevents unwanted pregnancies but also reduces the risk of life-threatening womb infections (pyometra) and cancer of the mammary glands.
Traditionally, the spay surgery has been performed as an open surgical procedure, leaving a 3-12cm stitched wound in the dog’s tummy. It is now possible to perform the spay as a “keyhole” surgery (correctly known as a laparoscopic spay). Instead of opening the dog up and looking directly inside, the surgeon is able to put fine telescopic instruments into the patient and perform the surgery by looking at the organs on a television screen. The benefits of a laparoscopic spay over a traditional open spay are: significantly less postoperative discomfort, faster recovery (usually back to normal within 24 hours), much reduced risk of wound infections, and minimal scarring.
It is also possible to carry out other types of surgery in this way, including liver biopsies, removal of retained testicles in male dogs, and some types of bladder and stomach surgery. The surgical service at Acorn House Veterinary Hospital is overseen by Katharine Nelson, who has been recognised by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons as an Advanced Veterinary Practitioner in Small Animal Surgery. The hospital is able to offer both traditional and laparoscopic spay surgery. Enquiries are welcome from any dog owner interested in having a laparoscopic spay carried out at Acorn House, including those not currently registered with the practice.

GARDENING
THE PRIVET HEDGE
One of the questions I’m often asked as a gardener is ‘How do I trim my privet hedge?’ Privet is one of our most popular hedging plants. It has dense foliage which is green all year round, and it’s hardy which means it’s suited to a wide range of planting sites. It’s also available in a selection of varieties and root types, so there’s a Privet hedge to suit most gardens. Autumn is a good time to trim them because there’s little chance of disturbing any birds who might be nesting in them. Nesting season generally runs from March to early August. If you have a small hedge like those outside terraced town houses, then hand-held hedge shears are fine, but for large hedges an electric or even a petrol hedge-trimmer is definitely easier. If you have one, give it a check over and make sure it’s sharp and well lubricated. Safety should be paramount. Wear safety goggles and sturdy gloves. It’s not overkill. I once spent Saturday afternoon in eye casualty because a small sharp twig flew into my eye while I was trimming a hedge. It hurt and took ages to heal properly so be warned. Before starting, remove any potential obstacles on the ground which might prove to be a trip hazard. Avoid using powered tools above shoulder 48

height; instead use a sturdy step ladder set on stable ground. If your hedge trimmer is electric use a residual current device (RCD) for safety purposes, and don’t use it in damp conditions. One little trick I learned at a hedge-cutting course a few years ago is to cut hedges so that they are slightly tapered on both sides. This will mean the base is wider than the top and light can reach the bottom of the hedge, which means the hedge will be greener and look healthier.
Top Tips Straight edges are difficult to cut by eye. Use a taut horizontal string tied between two stout canes to act as a guide so you can cut the top of the hedge level. For vertical lines use canes or stakes pushed into the ground. When using shears, ensure that the top of the hedge is cut level and flat by keeping the blades of the shears parallel to the line of the hedge. When using a hedge trimmer, keep the blade parallel to the hedge and use a wide, sweeping action working from the bottom of the hedge upwards, so that the cut foliage falls away

GARDENING
CONIFER SHOOT MINER Conifer shoot miner (Argyresthia dilectella) is a small moth, with a wingspan of about 8 mm. This is one of several related species of Argyresthia that are becoming more widespread through out the UK as a result of the increase in garden juniper (Juniperus) and cypress (Chamaecyparis) plantings.
The moth can cause severe and highly visible damage (shoot tip dieback and foliar scorch) to infested trees. Damage commonly occurs on hedges and individual specimen trees in urban settings. Damage caused by the early instar larvae (mined scale leaves) usually goes unnoticed. Late instar larvae hollow out entire shoot tips. Infested trees appear scorched and the dead hollowed out twigs are easily broken off. Heavy feeding will injure leaf cells and reduce leaf tissue area leading to a loss of plant vitality. If complete defoliation occurs the plant may die. Contact insecticides such as spray oil in combination with a synthetic pyrethroid offer the best form of control. They are mainly formulated as water based sprays and applied when leaf miners are present. The insect growth regulator is highly recommended due to its persistence within the tree providing long term control. Growth regulators kill only moths and caterpillars, having no effect against beneficial insects. Application early in the growing season is recommended. No biological control agents exist.

BEDFORD BLUES
Bedford Blues are delighted to announce prop Sean McCarthy as club captain for the 2019/20 Greene King IPA Championship season. The impact made by McCarthy since joining the Blues from Jersey Reds in the summer of 2017 has been truly remarkable and he has truly embedded himself in the Bedford front row making over 50 appearances in his two seasons at Goldington Road. Following the retirement of scrum half Lee Dickson at the end of last season, Blues Director of Rugby Mike Rayer has installed the captaincy on 28 year old McCarthy who is already one of the senior and most respected members of the Bedford squad.
“To say this has come out of the blue, no pun intended, is quite an understatement. It is a huge honour to have been given this opportunity to lead such a wonderful club and a fantastic set of players and I was delighted to have accepted the role.” Speaking about the appointment, Rayer said: “Sean has been one of our standout players since he joined the club and he is widely respected by his teammates. He is a man who never takes a backwards step and is a great example of what a professional athlete should be so I am obviously delighted that he has agreed to take over the captaincy of Bedford Blues” You can buy tickets for all of Bedford’s home games at www.bedfordrugby.co.uk.
