l a v i t s e F g n i k l Wa Annual Bedfordshire

Saturday 8th to Sunday 16th September

T

he Bedfordshire Walking Festival offers lots of opportunities for people of almost all abilities. Whether it is one of the many walks for health of between 30-90 minutes, an informative guided walk of around two hours, a half day walk of around 3 hours, or for the really serious, full days of between 12-21 miles.

Sunday 9th at 13-30. Tuesday morning “The Jewel in the Crown” at 11-00 starting from outside the old town hall in St Pauls square, and on Monday afternoon at 13-30 starting from St Peter’s Green intriguingly titled “Three R’s, One AAH and some OOH’s”.

For the family an evening of Trails and Tales for older children with an afternoon version for younger ones. Why not take the train with a ride on the Leighton Buzzard Narrow Gauge Railway and return on foot along the Grand Union Canal. For those who like to try something different there are Nordic walking taster sessions in and around Bedford and walks too.

One of the most attractive features of the festival is that almost all the walks are free and do not require booking so you can just turn up. For some, mostly the health walks, it is better to phone the leader beforehand. Where booking and charges are necessary these are shown in the programme and bookings along with payment can be made via the festival web site.

Food lovers can enjoy first collecting food from the hedgerows then going back and transforming the goodies into Jam and more at Clophill.

Rounding off the nine days over the weekend of 15th & 16th is the annual Greensand Ridge Challenge 40 miles across the Greensand Country.

Informative guided walks offer an insight into the places, people and buildings around them. In Bedford there are three, between 1.5 and 2 hours duration starting with “The stories behind the headstones” at Foster Hill Road cemetery on

So why not explore Bedfordshire on foot this September after picking up a programme or visiting the festival web site www.bedswalkfest.co.uk

4

Further afield there are informative walks in Willington, Wootton, Northill Shuttleworth, Ampthill, Luton, Houghton Hall, Houghton Regis and from Jordan’s Mill in Broom.

Award-Winning Parks in Bedford Borough

Allhallows Car Park Open 24/7

Allhallows Multi-Storey Car Park is now open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It will continue to be free to park at Allhallows MultiStorey car park after 6pm so this move to extend opening hours will make it even easier for people to visit Bedford town centre, and enjoy all that the night-time economy has to offer with pubs, bars, restaurants and the town centre cinema.

Bedford Borough parks have again been awarded Green Flags this year, with Priory Country Park receiving this award for the 17th year in a row! In addition to Priory Country Park, three of our other parks have received the award again this year; Addison Howard Park, Bedford Park and Harrold-Odell Country Park. The Green Flag Award recognises and rewards well managed parks and green spaces and this international award is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible environmental standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent visitor facilities. Two of the Council’s volunteer-managed sites have also been recognised, winning the Green Flag Community Award: Mowsbury Hillfort and the Hill Rise Nature Reserve. Shalaine Aldis from Hill Rise Nature Reserve said “We are always on the lookout for more volunteers, and anyone who might be interested can visit www.hillrisenaturereserve.org.uk to find out more.” If you would be interested in volunteering in one of the Council’s parks and green spaces, please visit www.bedford. gov.uk/volunteering or sign up to the Community Volunteering email bulletin at www.bedford.gov.uk/stayconnected

Transporting Bedford 2020 Begins on Manton Lane Works to help manage congestion on Manton Lane, Bedford have started as part of the Transporting Bedford 2020 project. Manton Lane is a well-known congestion hotspot, not just for those who live in Bedford but also for those who travel via the A6 into the north of the town. To help tackle this, major works are being carried out over the summer. Preparatory works are being carried out at the entrance to Bedford Modern School. During the works, temporary traffic lights will be put in place and working hours will be maximised to minimise disruption caused. Resurfacing works will also be carried out as part of this project with Manton Lane from the Turner Way junction going south, and Brickhill Drive from Kestrel Road to the Manton lane traffic signals to be resurfaced. There will be overnight road closures in place from 8pm-6am, with work set to be completed by night of 7th September. Alistair Burt, your Local MP... AN MPS SUMMER ROUND – IT’S NOT ALL ‘RECESS’ YOU KNOW!

C

ombining Westminster with a busy constituency always requires an ability to juggle time, and a Minister with a portfolio in the Middle East finds the juggling even more tricky. But our annual recess is more than just a time to have a break, it is an opportunity to spend a bit more concerted time in the constituency and be involved in activity recognising the variety of interests in NE Bedfordshire. We are good with our charitable concerns. A visit to Pavenham Village Hall for a tea to support the Alzheimers Society and Dementia UK introduced me to too many cup-cakes, but also to a lively collection of people determined to take the fight against dementia seriously. We are strong in our faith too. In July the Chellington Team Ministry came up with the brilliant idea of linking their churches through a new twenty three mile ‘Eight Spires Way’, a path almost exclusively through footpaths and bridleways. A long day (7am start, but bacon sandwiches at more than one venue!) enabled the glory of our countryside to be well and truly savoured with 100 or so other walkers. Dropping down to Stotfold, I needed little reminder of our communities care for others as I opened the new Need project shop, the latest endeavour of a local Christian group who have worked for many years to provide help and comfort in a number of ways to all sections of their community.

8

Our small businesses provide a vital backbone, and I joined with the Chief Executive of Royal Mail, Paula Vennells at the official launch of the new Post Office in Great Denham. The local primary school had also been invited, and pupils showed a keen interest in how the Post Office worked, asked sensible questions, and enjoyed the celebratory cake on offer! Two stinging issues of the summer were ever present however. The dreadful train situation, following the chaotic timetable changes of May, has dominated my emails, twitter and contacts ever since. I have never come across, in thirty years, a worse example of an intractable crisis, and a meeting with constituents affected, and dropins to stations helped me in my constant contact with those responsible. There can be no excuses for the misery inflicted, and the Inquiry needs to be thorough to prevent such a situation arising ever again. And the glorious weather? Great for many, but contact with the NFU, and time on a farm for #yourharvest told me that there has been a downside for farming which will last for quite a while. A busy summer before our return to Westminster for the autumn, and, I suspect, a calm before the political storms to come.

credit? BStopadapplying! I

Assess your situation first f you’ve been rejected for a credit card, FREEZE! Don’t apply for another straightaway

Apply for too many cards and receive multiple rejections in a short period and you could shoot your credit rating in the foot for years. Here’s why… • You apply for a new credit card and get rejected. This could be any number of reasons and many lenders don’t publish their criteria before you apply! • You apply elsewhere, get rejected again, damaging your future credit chances. You now have TWO recent file searches and NO new cards. Many rejected applications can ruin your score for up to a year. If you haven’t applied for a while, or have applied once and been knocked back, you should check your credit reports and eligibility first. Eligibility calculator – which cards you’re most likely to get The only way to know if you’ll be accepted is to apply, yet each application marks your credit file. But our eligibility calculator online can highlight the ones most likely to accept you, minimising applications.

10

Join our Credit Club – full credit health check, free Experian Credit Report, Affordability Score and Credit Hit Rate The new MSE Credit Club is a game-changer. For years the credit market has been shrouded in mystery but our revolutionary tool brings together the key components to give you the full picture, what it means for your acceptance chances and how to boost your creditworthiness. A credit score alone isn’t enough to borrow, as there are other factors at play (it’s why many with perfect scores still get rejected). Our new Credit Club shows you... 1. Free Experian Credit Report – your credit accounts and how you’ve managed them. 2. Free Experian Credit Score – how lenders rate your past credit behaviour. 3. MSE Affordability Score – how lenders assess your affordability 4. Your Credit Hit Rate – how likely you are to be accepted 5. Credit Card & Loan Eligibility Calcs – what your odds are of getting specific top deals. 6. How to improve your credit profile – where your profile is strong and weak, and how to improve it. More information on these and more at www.moneysavingexpert.com under credit cards and loans.

O

ur Minds Matter is a Bedfordshire charity focused on education surrounding mental health. In particular, the charity seeks to explore how spirituality and culture impact mental health. At its inaugural Bedford launch conference on 12th July at the University of Bedfordshire, Our Minds Matter brought together NHS commissioners who buy mental health care, professionals and others to investigate new approaches to mental wellbeing. The wide scope of the conference saw contributions from Helen Nellis, the Lord Lieutenant of Bedfordshire, MP Mohammed Yasin, Cllr Louise Jackson the portfolio holder for public health, Gail Dearing Associate Director of Social Care ELFT, a psychiatrist, faith leaders as well as service users. The High Sherriff praised the charity in his address to the diverse audience of 60, saying that OMM are ‘the right people at the right time in the right place‘. The creative event which incorporated performance art, explored themes of loss, growth, identity and acceptance. The Lord Lieutenant shared her thoughts on how those facing challenges with their mental health can work fruitfully and make a contribution. Panel discussions also reflected that the current system focuses on symptoms rather than prevention, leaving little space to break the stigma. 12

The founder of the charity, Jolel Miah said “the best mental health care is about listening, understanding the person and using the connection between mind, body and soul to create practical solutions that work for them.” Leading the group in Bedford, Saleha Khanom said “we’re grateful to everyone who attended our conference and has pledged to support us to deliver this important work.” One attendee from the charity sector commented that the event was “informative, insightful & inspirational!”, and a member if the community pledged that he would “challenge stigma and promote creative empowerment”. Our Minds Matter aims to hold regular Mental Wellbeing Awareness events in the community, as well as deliver Mental Health First Aid training across Bedford Borough. The groups next upcoming community engagement events will be on World Mental Health Day, Wednesday 10th October 2018. If any organisations would like to work in collaboration or anyone interested in volunteering with the charity, please contact the team. ourmindsmatterbedford@gmail.com or visit www.ourmindsmatter.org.uk

Senior Snippets Top Tips to Eat Well and Age Well

• Keep mealtimes interesting. Encourage your loved one to get involved in the selection, preparation and serving of meal s wherever possible. • Help your loved one to make a shopping list and decide on a healthy meal plan for the week. • Think about portion sizes; If appetite is a problem, it is better to introduce smaller portions more often instead of a large plate of food 3 times a day. Offering finger foods is also a good way to encourage people to eat if someone doesn’t want a traditional meal. • Make the dining area comfortable, remove distractions and create a nice atmosphere.

• Ensure healthy snack options are available and make sure food and drinks are easily accessible throughout the day. • Avoid calorie-free or low-fat products unless your loved one has specifically been advised to eat them by their GP. • Always prioritise mealtimes and try to create a mealtime routine. Avoid rushing and coercing someone to eat. Gentle persuasion is better. • Confront the myth that weight loss is a normal process with ageing as our bodies become less active. Weight loss is not a normal part of the ageing process Home Instead Senior Care Bedford. 106A Bedford Road, Wootton. MK43 9JB.

here’s a brand new Specialist Beer and Cider Shop on the trendy St. Cuthbert’s Street just outside Bedford’s town centre. This street has really come up in recent years with the addition of Bears & Tails Cocktail Bar, Vanilla Tree Coffee Shop and now Beerfly to complement the great food of Herd’s Burgers and Thai Rice. At first glance Beerfly seems like a normal shop, but it comes with the tag line “Shop + Drink”, so it’s a bottle shop similar to a traditional off license, but with the added advantage of a tasting room, where you can sit in and enjoy one of the interesting selection of beers they have on one of the six taps in store, you can also take away that fresh beer in their 3½ pint flagons. On top of that they have a range of nearly 200 different beers and ciders from around the world in their fridges and on their shelves. It’s certainly a new concept for Bedford and a really nice way to find out more about the exciting craft beer world as well as explore the beers of Belgium and the USA. It’s always nice to see a new, independent and unique business opening up nearby Get into Bedford and find out more for yourselves or visit their website at www.beerflyshop.co.uk for more information.

Shadows of the Workhouse by Jennifer Worth

There are not many people who have not seen, or at least heard of the BBC drama Call the Midwife. However, few are aware that the first series was based on the memoirs of midwife Jennifer Worth, and the women and families she encountered in the East End of London in the 1950s. She wrote a trilogy of memoirs and the second of these is Shadows of the Workhouse. When we think of workhouses we tend to think of Dickens’ Oliver Twist. However, workhouses persisted until much later: the last ones only closed their doors in 1948. Among the communities that Worth worked in, many people were haunted by their recent memories and experiences in these institutions. There is Jane, who works with the midwives but as a child in the first decade of the 1900s grew up in a children’s workhouse as an unwanted child. Frank and Peggy, a brother and sister, were sent to the workhouse in 1908 when their parents died, their later lives forever affected by the harsh and uncaring institution they grew up in. As the workhouses fade from living memory this memoir provides a reminder of how they shaped the lives of countless men, women, and children.

Review Searching

Searching is all about a man who is a single father and the desperate lengths he goes to after his 16 year old daughter goes missing. The film follows him as he tries to uncover her last known movements and talk to her friends… until he discovers he doesn’t know who her friends are or what she got up to when she wasn’t at home. The film is a real mystery that has clues to be uncovered and suspects to be considered but as good as the story is it is the way it is filmed that makes Searching. Searching is not filmed in the traditional way of putting a camera in front of the actors and following them. Searching does everything through computer screens, phones, news footage and on camera interviews. It is a kind of found footage movie but with all the footage being seen as it is happening. We get to see the screen of the computer he is looking at as he tries to access her email and facebook, as he creates a database of everything he knows in a desperate bid to find his daughter. Searching is a terrific mystery movie that adds style to a good story.

The beautiful Manon will take your breath away Rarely performed outside London, the ballet masterpiece Manon is coming to Milton Keynes Theatre in October thanks to English National Ballet.

“I’m proud that we’re bringing this dramatic story ballet to Milton Keynes and other regional cities”, says Tamara Rojo, Lead Principal dancer and Artistic Director of English National Ballet. “It’s only the second time in thirty years it’s happening!” Kenneth MacMillan, one of the most important British choreographers that ever lived, created this three-act tragedy in 1974. It quickly became a classic, with audiences falling in love with its heroine. So who is Manon? She is a young woman living in 18th century France, who has been promised as a mistress to an older gentleman, by her own brother (no less!). While she enjoys the life of privilege it affords her, she can’t help falling in love with a penniless student. Cue a tale of gambling, glamour and greed that could compete with any period drama.

Making health care decisions

for your pet

I

t is common for a veterinary surgeon to recommend a particular test, operation or treatment for their patient. As pet owners, we have to decide whether to go ahead with the suggested procedure. But how do we know that we are making the right decision? In human health care, there is currently a campaign to raise awareness of the BRAN system to help patients make these decisions. BRAN stands for Benefits, Risks, Alternatives and what happens if we do Nothing. The system can be just as useful for pet owners.

1. Benefits

The first question to ask your vet when they suggest an operation, blood test, Xray or course of medication is “what are the likely benefits?” For example, having an operation to remove a cancerous lump from a pet’s skin would hopefully cure the cancer.

2. Risks

3. Alternatives

The third question is “what are the alternatives?” Sticking with our original example, alternative treatments such as chemotherapy or radiotherapy may be possible.

4. Nothing

It is always a good idea to ask about what would happen if we did nothing. For example, some cancerous lumps grow very slowly, and in a very elderly pet it may be that leaving the lump alone will probably not lead to any further problems within the pet’s natural lifespan. At Acorn House Veterinary Hospital we understand that our patients are well loved family members and it can be worrying when a test or treatment is recommended for your pet. All of the veterinary surgeons at Acorn House will be very happy to guide you through these decisions, and the BRAN system can be a very helpful way to do this.

The second question to ask is “what are the risks?” In the example above, going ahead with the operation would carry a risk of complications under the anaesthetic and bleeding or infection at the operation site. 47

GARDENING

Arboriculturalist or Tree Lopper

A

rboriculture is the cultivation, management, and study of individual trees, shrubs, vines, and other perennial woody plants. It is both a practice and a science.

The level of accreditation can be evidence of the skill level and experience of the staff undertaking the work. Ask for references, a good Arborist will be only too happy to boast about their good quality work. Ask how the waste is disposed of, is it recycled?

A good Arborist (Tree Surgeon) can be a difficult thing to find in your area. There are a lot of companies of varying size and quality to choose from to suit any budget. There are a few factors you need to bear in mind before selecting an Arborist to work on your trees or shrubs. You also need to bear in mind that selecting a contractor who just does “Lopping and Topping” can do irreparable damage to your trees and your prize specimen could be fatally damaged.

The Arboricultural industry has a best practice guide that all contractors should be working to when pruning, with work conforming to British Standard 3998 “Tree Work Recommendations”. This standard gives guidance on pruning to aid with the trees future development.

Things to look for in a good Arborist contractor: • Do they have adequate insurance (Employers, Public & Professional Indemnity), ask to see a copy before work is started. • Do they have accreditations, Arboricutural Association Approved contractor is recognised industry accreditation but not an essential as this assesses Health & Safety and work quality. • Further accreditations can be CHAS, ISO 9000, Safecontractor or ISA accreditation to name but a few.

Don’t be tempted with just a cheap price from a contractor who knocks at your door saying “would you like your trees chopped”, it rarely works out well.

Look into other treatment for your trees and shrubs such as; follow up fertilization, root management and Cultural treatments.

The key component is not to just look at the final price; the cheapest price may look good at the time, but could lead to excessive cost later on, as the tree develops. Quality pruning by a reputable contractor will be cost effective and reduce the amount of future visits needed and keep your trees and shrubs looking both healthy and natural.

BARTLETT TREE EXPERTS A Very Brown Hedge Indeed Aphids are one of the most common and troublesome of all garden insect pests. They attack a large number of garden plants throughout the country and are recently causing much disfigurement to ornamental conifer hedges. Commonly known as Greenfly and Blackfly, these aphids feed on hedges, sucking the sap of the plant and can spread several viruses, causing severe dieback. Cypress Aphid is currently troublesome and pre-dominantly affects conifer hedging. Damage inflicted on conifer hedges by the aphid Cinara cupressi is severe and can lead to large brown patches on the hedge. This leads to localised foliage death, reducing the aesthetic look of the hedge. As the aphid is active from May to October it is important to catch this problem early and apply treatments to stop its spread. At the first sign of brown patches call us for a free consultation and professional advice.

A Host of

Golden Daffodils

G

arden centres, nurseries and catalogues are full of daffodil bulbs now and I get asked more questions about daffodils than any other plant, apart from roses. I think it’s because they are ubiquitous in the spring and so we assume they are easy to grow. They are...and they aren’t, so I’ll answer the most common questions I get asked here.

The question I get most is ’How do I get my daffodils to flower more than one year?’ It’s tempting to think that the only thing you have to remember about planting daffodil bulbs is to set them pointy side up, but it’s a bit more complicated than that if you want them to flower every year. The trick is to set them deep enough. If you plant them just below the surface, as so many of people do, they dry out, which means they lack the food and moisture to get them through until the following year. The result is an uninteresting clump of leaves rather than a host of golden daffodils. You can plant daffodils any time now, to the end of October. Sooner is better. The next question is, ‘What’s the difference between daffodils and narcissi?’ All daffodils are narcissi, but not all narcissi are daffodils! ‘Daffodils’ is the name we give to narcissi with large trumpets.

52

The third question I’m often asked is, ‘How far apart should I plant the bubs? They should be planted about 3 inches / 8cm apart in holes about 10 inches / 25cm deep. It looks deep when you are dropping them in but it’s worth the effort for the repeat flowering. Choose the biggest firmest bulbs you can find for each variety. The final question I get asked is, ‘When can I cut down the foliage after flowering?’ I would suggest waiting for 6 weeks. If you have a very small garden and can’t bear to have untidy foliage lying around you might be better treating the bulbs as annuals (daffodil bulbs aren’t generally expensive.). Or you can plant them in an aquatic basket, and after flowering you can dig the basket up, water the bulbs regularly then replant in the autumn. Alternatively, you can buy dwarf varieties of daffodil which have daintier flowers and foliage, so you can have pretty flowers without the resulting foliage posing a problem. Whatever you decide, remember plant deeper than you think!

BLUES B

edford Blues and Ampthill Rugby Club have come to one another’s aid to ensure that everyone has a very merry Christmas With no festive fixture in the calendar for either team over the Christmas and New Year week, the two have decided to go head-to-head at Goldington Road on Boxing Day. While it may not be a competitive fixture, there will be plenty of local pride at stake as the two biggest rugby teams in Bedfordshire face-off at 3pm on Wednesday 26th December. Speaking about the fixture, Rayer said: “I think everyone was a little disappointed that we had no Christmas or New Year fixture in the calendar so the club made the decision to add one and we’re delighted to be facing Ampthill who also found themselves in the same situation. “With such a long break between games, it’s important to keep the lads match fit during the winter months so this will be an excellent test to keep everyone on their toes. We know Ampthill have a fantastic squad and it would be no surprise to see this fixture being a league one sooner rather than later. “We want to say a big thank you to Mark (Lavery) and everyone at Ampthill for agreeing to this game and I hope that all local rugby fans can come along and enjoy a bit of festive fun!” Tickets for the game are available from www.bedfordrugby.co.uk www.bedfordrugby.co.uk for more details.
