Bedford Town Football Club

For the first time in ten-month’s, competitive football is back at The Eyrie, and Bedford Town have got off to the best possible start against a team fancied to do well in the PitchingIn Southern League Division One Central after their move sideways from the Isthimian league during the Summer.

Waltham Abbey, who were top of the table last season when it was curtailed, were given a lesson in football when The Eagles got their talons into the Essex side. Five goals ahead at half time in the first match of the season is unprecedented for Bedford, who have a habit of losing their opening fixture. They went on to concede two goals in the second half, but the damage had already been done and the first three points of the season secured.

Some impressive signings in the close season featured in this first match. Australian born fullback Lewis Miccio, who until recently has played his football down under, played a part in four of Bedford’s goals. Hugh AlbanJones has had a career playing in Spain before coming back to the United Kingdom looked strong in midfield. The star of the show though was last minute, lone signing Harmeed Ishola. The eighteen-year-old Peterborough United striker, who will be with the Eagles throughout the season and who played for The Posh first team preseason, came on as a first half substitute and immediately made an impact. Outpacing the opposition with his mazy runs, before finding the net twice all within ten minutes is a debut Bedford fans will hope he can replicate many more times this season.
