ow it really is spring around the corner and we have seen several lovely days with the daffodils and crocuses starting to show. It is a time when we come out of the winter hibernation and think about the year ahead a bit more. Spring is the perfect time to start prepping the garden for the fruits (or veg!) of summer – our garden article on p50 is all about growing tomatoes.

Band Bedford Town
B
edford Town Band was formed in 1894 and for the past 123 years the Band has been playing in and around the Town and entering brass band competitions across the UK, proudly carrying the Town’s name and Eagle logo. The Bedford Town Band organisation now holds charity status and supports 3 brass bands, Bedford Town Band, Bedford Town Concert Brass and Bedford Town Progress Brass.
During its long life, the Band has rehearsed at various venues around Bedford and Kempston. The band is looking to finding its own premises for rehearsals and the storage of all the equipment and music required. A long term lease on a suitable building or plot of land on which to erect a suitable building would be ideal. For a major project of this nature, the band seeks to work with the local authority and any local companies 4
and organisations willing and able to help. Grant funding will also be sought for such a major project, and they are working with Brass Band England exploring the various Grant opportunities that may be available for major capital projects. If you feel you your company or organisation is in a position to offer support, help or advice please contact the band at administrator@ bedfordtownband.org.uk Bedford is a multi-cultural town and the Band would like to reflect this in its playing membership so would love to hear from people from the different ethnic communities of the town who may be interested in playing. Players of all abilities are welcome and opportunities are available to play from beginner to national contesting level and the imminent re-launch of our Brass Academy will teach beginners of all ages. To enable anyone to support the Band in its aims, it is registered with both “My Donate” and “Give as you Live”. Further information on these fund raising initiatives and more information at www.bedfordtownband.org.uk

Alistair Burt, your Local MP... SPORT AND DIPLOMACY – A MIXED RECORD
T
he sight of North and South Koreans parading together at the recent Winter Olympics will have gladdened even the hardest of hearts. Who would not want to see some easing of tension between these two states, and indeed between North Korea and the rest of the world? That people everywhere long for the same things, and that sport can so often provide a bridge was very evident in smiling faces and high hopes. We shall see, though I find it hard to be truly certain that a manipulative and cruel dictatorship such as that in North Korea is reversing decades of isolationism on the back of an Olympic event. Sport and diplomacy has a mixed history in the last century or so. The infamous 1936 Berlin Olympics, with its Nazi salutes and humiliation of the ‘master race’ through Jesse Owens triumphs failed to convince the world of Hitler’s supremacy, and displayed to the world something of what was to come. A lighter note came in 1966. Those of us who were there remember the North Korean football squad who humbled the overpaid and overfancy Italians, putting them out of the World Cup. Their refreshing attacking style, and cheerful nature, did much to put their state into a new light at the time. In 1980 – amidst Cold War tension, the ‘miracle on the ice’, the win by an amateur US Ice Hockey team against the professionals of the USSR, proved the power of sport to be used for the wider purpose of 8
the battle for ideological supremacy, though in truth it was at heart a marvellous sporting triumph pure and simple. But in 1995 it was hard to disentangle sporting triumph from the emotion of an emerging South Africa as the Springboks won the Rugby World Cup and were embraced by Nelson Mandela. There was so much more behind this. Rugby had been the apartheid sport, and the black population had never embraced the game or the players as their own. The reconciliation that Mandela manifested in his personality, and his hopes for the nation, were symbolised by that triumph immortalised after in film and legend. As readers know I love my sport, enjoying local and national rivalries. I can assure you that many of my conversations with foreign ministers and others abroad include sporting references, as a universal language. I accompanied a number of Ambassadors to events at London 2012, and still retain a picture of the then German Ambassador wrapped in a Union Jack at the Velodrome, which I have promised to slip to the media if we ever need to! I played football with former members of the Iraqi national football team in a five a side game in Baghdad as part of our diplomatic effort there, my two goals providing a very warm memory indeed! So here’s to sport – from Ashes, to Roses matches, to the camaraderie of the Six Nations, to Olympics and to the warmth of non-league football as we shiver together and renew friendships and rivalries. May such spirit help troubled nations find a better pathway together.

Money Matters
By Martin Lewis If you paid to register a Power of Attorney in England or Wales between 1 April 2013 and 31 March 2017, you’re owed a refund of up to £54.
U
nder a new Government scheme, those who paid a registration fee for a Lasting Power of Attorney in that period can apply for a partial refund as they were charged more than was necessary. A Lasting Power of Attorney is a legal document which allows you, while you still have the mental capacity to do so, to nominate a trusted friend or relative to look after your affairs if you lose capacity. There are two types of Power of Attorney, one for finance and property and another for health and welfare. Some will have registered both and so can claim a refund of up to £108.
Why is the money being refunded?
When you register a Power of Attorney, you’re charged an application fee, set by the Ministry of Justice and paid to the Office of the Public Guardian. Between 2013 and 2017, the operating costs of the Office of the Public Guardian decreased, but the application fee stayed the same, at £110. As the fee is simply supposed to cover operating costs, the Government is now repaying the difference between what applicants paid and what they should have paid, plus interest. 10
On 1 April 2017, the application fee for registering a Power of Attorney was reduced from £110 to £82. If you applied after that date, you can’t reclaim.

t: 01234 964007 e: info@nulookroof.co.uk
How much can I reclaim?
How much you can reclaim depends on when you paid for the Power of Attorney, and whether you paid the full registration fee or the half-price fee, which is offered to those with an income of less than £12,000 a year or who are on certain benefits:
PROFESSIONALLY INSTALLED ALARM FOR JUST £499* Fully Maintained 3 Year Warranty Control with phone or tablet
How to claim a refund
You can make a claim if you were the donor (the person who made the Power of Attorney) or the attorney (the person appointed by the donor) – but the refund will be paid to the donor. You can claim a refund even if the Power of Attorney has been used, and there’s currently no deadline by which you must apply. To apply, you can claim a refund online or phone the Office of the Public Guardian’s helpline on 0300 456 0300 option six. You will need the donor’s name, address and date of birth, their UK bank account number and sort code and the name of one of the attorneys on the Power of Attorney. Get a good GP Having an excellent GP is essential and ensure older people follow their direction. Our CAREGivers are trained to spot ‘red flag’ changes in health and can assist with transportation to appointments and with medication management. Keep physically and mentally active Encourage your relative to keep active where possible. Walking for just five or 10 minutes at a time several days each week is a great way to begin. Stimulate the brain through activities such as drawing, crosswords or doing a puzzle. Maintain a healthy diet Appetite diminishes with age. Encourage your loved ones to eat a diet containing plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, oily fish and starchy foods such as wholegrain bread, pasta and rice – plus extra vitamin D and calcium.
Keep hydrated! Hydration is really important, even if they say they’re not thirsty. It is advisable to drink 6-8 glasses of water a day. Companionship Loneliness and social isolation are harmful to health so encourage social activities such as attending a lunch club or joining a social group. Home care visits can help you with all of the above.

T
he afternoon event was recently held at Bedford Modern School and the charity invited many individual supporters together with representatives of the organisations, businesses, trusts, and local groups that form the very supportive communities of Bedford and the neighbouring area.
Among those attending were The Lord-Lieutenant, Helen Nellis, High Sheriff Vinod Tailor, Speaker of Bedford Borough Council Jade Uko, Paul Mead and colleagues of Michael R Peters, Harry Beard representing the Beard family and the Beard Group and many past and present volunteer members of the Executive Committee of the Charity including, Mrs Jude Cottam MBE (for services to Bedford Hospital), and Mrs Molly Taylor MBE and Mrs Rene Garrard MBE (both for their fundraising work for the Charity). Deborah Inskip DL, Chairman of the Bedford Hospitals Charity, welcomed the guests and introduced Mrs Ann Hadfield who told the history of the formation of Medical Wives. That group went on to raisie £100,000 to renovate the nurses home. 22

Concluding the 30th Anniversary Celebrations, Debbie Inskip announced the Charity’s launch of the 30th Anniversary ‘Half a Million’ Appeal to provide Bedford Hospital with a number of elements including a Patient Entertainment System to bring the Hospital Radio Bedford back onto the wards, and several new and exciting items of diagnostic imaging and treatment equipment. 2018 will be a momentous year for the Charity and a number of events will celebrate the 30th Anniversary and, as ever, the Charity will aim to improve the patient experience by enhancing the services that the NHS is able to offer.

The wide scope of the many projects over the years was described by Brian Woodrow DL, OBE who explained how the £10 million raised over the past 30 years has funded such major facilities as the Macmillan Primrose Unit, the Primrose Car Service and the new £1 million MRI Scanner due to be delivered very soon. The Lord-Lieutenant Helen Nellis thanked all the individuals and groups who have supported the Charity over the years, helping to provide Bedford Hospital with equipment and facilities that have benefited so many patients and their families.

Your Tarotscopes forMarch 2018... by Susan Peppiatt Pisces
Children and anger or childish anger show this March. That may well mean dealing with sulky, needy people who cannot let go of wants and needs. Stick to your guns and don’t be manipulated by those around you. Give children a voice to vent their anger through exercise, to help them vent the emotions.
Aries
A dream trip or holiday comes strongly into mind this month for those born under the sign of the Ram it’s just finding the time to fit everything in which is hard, as work is pretty heavy consistently, and needs juggling to get enough time together for other things which matter .
Taurus
A personal wish and hopes for some relaxation show as important to Taureans, as the month progresses, but other people’s desires and needs seem to get in the way, so the only way to get much needed rest would seem to be to be a little more selfish than normal, much as it goes against the grain.
Gemini
A lot of people show around Geminis this month who seem to want to take control and be pushy or bullying but don’t allow these to take advantage of your kind nature and ability to think outside of the box. Stay in touch with what is wanted but make your own choices.
Cancer
Other people’s wealth and happiness may seem to be easier won and better and longer lasting, but this shows as a time to count the many blessings which are actually around you and remember the grass isn’t always greener.
Leo
A real feeling of everything being driven by an outside energy shows this month for Leo subjects. When one project is nearly done three others show as coming to the surface, but in a good not difficult way. It’s just not a month to expect any rest.
Virgo
March is a fulfilling time for partnerships and couples with one partner born under this sign. New prospects in homes and comfort also show; as do possibilities with positive changes in work. It’s a very proactive month, but don’t miss out by trying to slow things down.
Libra
Silly ideas and outdoor pursuits are focused on by many Librans, a lot to do with exercise, and health. A lot of it seems almost more to do with fun and friendship than any kind of goal, however. Enjoy it, but keep warm while doing so. Colds or flu are also shown to be close.
Scorpio
This month shows a commitment to taking on a new job, or new career or way forward, for Scorpios, despite huge doubts and lack of self belief that it can work out, this new way of life does seem to strike a note of harmony in what is otherwise a fairly difficult time.
Sagittarius
Children and their successes in little ways which are disarming and joyful show as making differences around Sagittarians this month. A lot of creativity is shown from both the young people and those around them, who guide and help them that is worth celebrating.
Capricorn
This is a top month for Capricorns when they are shown as having the gift of the gab, able to sway decisions and make differences with their input in conversations at home and work. They are advised that humour is the key to opening doors which have previously been slammed shut
Aquarius
A month which appear to be a bit of a financial roller coaster, Aquarians are likely to make big money related commitment only to rethink the issue constantly. Expect to have to wait for something a little longer while you work out the actual finances, and accept the possibility of making other choices rather than being fixed on one idea alone.

Book
Review The Island by Victoria Hislop
It is books like this that remind you, in small ways, how fortunate we are to live in the 21st century when illnesses and diseases that were once considered a death sentence are now curable. One such disease is leprosy which provides the background for this debut novel. Alexis Fielding is a 25-year-old living in London who knows very little about her background other than the fact that her mother comes from Crete. For whatever reason her mother refuses to discuss her past. Frustrated by her silence, Alexis decides to take her own journey to her mother’s home village, Plaka, to discover the truth that her mother will not speak of. Through an old family friend, in the heat of the Cretan sun, Alexis learns of her family history. Of her great grandmother, Eleni, and her two daughters, Maria and Anna. More crucially she learns of the sad past of the now deserted island, just 1km from Plaka. And how her family’s past is forever linked to this place where the shunned inhabitants tried to maintain some level of normalcy amidst their pain and isolation. In a culture where family is everything, how can a family continue when it is ripped apart?

Flash Point A building is on fire, there are people inside that need to be rescued and only you and your fellow firemen stand a chance of getting into the house, fighting the fire and finding/rescuing the poor owners and their friends. In Flash Point you play the firemen called out to fight a fire raging throughout a house. You have a limited number of moves every turn to try and work together efficiently. The fire will spread at the end of every players turn and the building will suffer more damage, until it is teetering on collapsing. The question is can your brave men and women find and rescue the people inside before catastrophe strikes? Flash Point is a cleverly designed co-operative game where you work as a team to beat the game. Every turn you have limited options you can do but multiple options that you want to do. It is all about co-operating with your fellow firemen to succeed. The cleverness of this game though is that it has an easy and hard version, and the harder version (even at easy level) is still very hard! One of the best games out at this moment in time.

England’s favourite animation studio Aardman, the creators of Wallace and Gromit and Shaun The Sheep, are back with their latest Claymation film set in the Bronze age and telling the story of a tribe of Stone Age Cavemen who find themselves at odds with the bronze age tribe that wants to take over their valley. The only chance they have to beat their enemies is to challenge them to a game of football, the Bronze Age tribes greatest passion! Early Man is a typical Aardman film, full of comedic touches while telling a simple story of the underdog challenging a bigger, better rival, a tried and tested formula told throughout the ages. The characters are a lot of fun and tyou find yourself on Dug’s side pretty quickly, especially as the villains are also hilariously stereotypical. It is aimed at a slightly higher level than Shaun The Sheep but it still keeps the comedy and the fun at a level that children will enjoy. A fun film for all the family.

Coming to MK Theatre soon! BedsLife talks to Sebastien Torkia who originates from Bedford and plays Mr. Wormwood
Q. So you hail from Bedford originally – whereabouts did you go to school and what do you remember most about this town? I went to St Thomas More Upper School and I would say the thing I remember most about Bedford is it is where I got my first taste of performing in front of people, with my first experience of being on stage when I played the piano at the Corn Exchange. I also think about all the family and friends that I have there including of course my parents who still live there.
Q.How is this production bringing something new to this story? Some of the characters, for example, the Wormwoods are developed further in the stage show than they are in the book, so it’s really interesting to find out what happens to them. Dennis Kelly (who wrote the book) has allowed us to follow several characters stories simultaneously and without giving too much away it’s wonderful how they all come together. Also, it’s a musical so it’s fun to hear these characters sing.
Q.Having played so many fantastic and varied theatre roles, what attracted you to the character of Mr. Wormwood? It’s always good fun to play a mean character or a bad guy but the extra special thing is not only is he mean but he is very stupid and comical and it’s a very physical role. All these things put together were attractive to me in taking it on board.
Q.What’s challenging about bringing this script to life? Aesthetically, Quentin Blake’s illustrations are fantastic and the production makes those images 3D. It’s a wonderful challenge to create the style of the piece and bring the story to life. The script is brilliantly written, the scenes are incredibly succinct and the show is very fast paced so as an actor you need a lot of stamina both physically and mentally. Q.What sort of person is going to love this show? This show is going to appeal to absolutely everyone. Children, because they will love seeing other children on stage and will be moved by the story, and adults because they will rediscover the child within themselves. It also has everything in it, it’s funny, moving and is full of surprises. Q.What do you like to do when you’re not doing theatre? I’m a bit of a culture vulture. I enjoy going to museums and galleries, the cinema, watching movies, reading books and listening to music. All of that when I’m not busy looking after my children. Why choose Acorn House ? Acorn House is the only Veterinary Hospital in Bedford To be awarded hospital status, a veterinary practice must: • Pass regular rigorous inspections by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons • Ensure that nursing staff are on site 24 hours a day • Ensure that veterinary surgeons are available 24 hours a day • Provide specialist equipment for diagnosis and treatment • Employ veterinary surgeons with advanced qualifications and experience
The highest accreditation a veterinary practice can be awarded is Veterinary Hospital status
Choosing a small pet
which one is best for your family?
Hamsters
Syrian hamsters should always live alone, but dwarf hamsters should be kept in same-sex groups. Do bear in mind that hamsters are nocturnal. This usually means that they are not very exciting pets during the day, and should not be kept in a child’s bedroom as they tend to be noisy at night!
Gerbils
Gerbils are naturally awake during the day and like to live in same-sex groups. They love to burrow so are best kept in aquariums filled with a deep layer of bedding such as wood shavings. Both hamsters and gerbils can become very tame with regular, gentle handling.

Guinea pigs are best kept in same-sex pairs or groups (although it is possible to neuter the males so that they can be kept with a female). They are very sensitive to the damp and to extremes of temperature, so hutches and runs should be kept inside a well-insulated shed, with outdoor access in good weather. Be aware that guinea pigs can live for up to 8 years, whereas hamsters, gerbils and rats tend to live for around 2 years.
Rats
Rats really love interaction with people. Rats also live in same-sex groups but need a much larger cage than hamsters and gerbils. Rats should be given at least an hour of play and exercise out of the cage every day.
Rabbits
Rabbits require very large hutches and runs and have quite exacting dietary requirements. Rabbits should not live alone, but two males together will fight. The need for neutering, regular vaccinations, and other preventative care means that rabbits can be expensive to keep correctly. Rabbits are also easily injured by incorrect handling. For these reasons, rabbits are most suitable for adults or older children. Of course, all pets remain the responsibility of the adults in the home, and children handling pets should always be supervised by an adult. Further information on keeping these pets correctly is available online at www.bluecross. org.uk, www.rspca.org.uk, and from your local veterinary hospital.

S
Root collar excavation is a process whereby soil is permanently removed from around the root collar to a depth of where the main structural roots originate. This allows the bark in these areas to dry, reducing disease infection and making the tree less susceptible to certain pests. The trees root collar is where the tree stem meets the main structural roots, typically the stem flares out into the main roots nursery with soil against the root collar. Excess mulching can also lead to root collar issues, consequently mulch should never be placed against the root collar. Trees with buried root collars have soil moisture constantly against the stem tissue. Stem tissue is not designed to resist constant soil moisture. Gaseous exchange in this tissue is inhibited resulting in necrosis of phloem cells after a prolonged period. Phloem cell necrosis results in interrupted transport of plant sugars to the roots produced through photosynthesis in the leaves, resulting in root starvation, root dieback and reduced water and nutrient uptake.
FREE ESTIMATES Freephone 0800 959 6420 Mobile 07733 254018
Trees with root collar disorders and declining phloem tissue are more susceptible to pest and diseases specifically the root decay pathogens Armillaria spp., and Phytopthora spp. If a tree is in an advanced state of decline then a tree risk assessment should be performed to identify if tree removal or other pruning works are required. If decline is not too far advanced or detected early then remedial treatments should be prescribed. 1. Airspade Root Collar Excavation 2. Fertilization 3. Mulching 4. Irrigation

BARTLETT TREE EXPERTS A Very Brown Hedge Indeed Aphids are one of the most common and troublesome of all garden insect pests. They attack a large number of garden plants throughout the country and are recently causing much disfigurement to ornamental conifer hedges. Commonly known as Greenfly and Blackfly, these aphids feed on hedges, sucking the sap of the plant and can spread several viruses, causing severe dieback. Cypress Aphid is currently troublesome and pre-dominantly affects conifer hedging. Damage inflicted on conifer hedges by the aphid Cinara cupressi is severe and can lead to large brown patches on the hedge. This leads to localised foliage death, reducing the aesthetic look of the hedge. As the aphid is active from May to October it is important to catch this problem early and apply treatments to stop its spread. At the first sign of brown patches call us for a free consultation and professional advice.

GARDENING
For All Your Landscaping Needs
Top Tips for Growing Tomatoes
1. 2.
Start small if you’re a beginner. If you’ve limited space grow some tomatoes in a pot.
Try out some endangered varieties which have proved reliable, such as ‘My Girl’, which has medium to large, plum-shaped fruits with few seeds, ‘Kenilworth’, a classic round, red sumptuous tomato with a sweet and herby flavour, or the early ‘Whippersnapper’, which produces an abundance of attractive, small, oval, pinkish-red fruits and is ideal for tubs and hanging baskets. If you can’t get these, heirloom varieties (available in various gardening outlets and online) such as ‘Red Beefsteak’ and ‘Red Cherry’ are also easy to grow.
3.
Spring is the time to sow your seeds. They’re not hardy, so start them off inside on a greenhouse, or windowsill. Sow your seeds into a seed tray which has been filled with good quality seed compost, firmed gently and watered. Try recycling containers like yogurt pots, washing them thoroughly and punching a few holes in the base for drainage. Drop just one or two seeds on the surface of the compost in each module then cover with a thin layer of compost or vermiculite and label. 50

4.
Once they start to put on growth, they’ll need to be re-potted into larger containers to allow space for the rapidly developing root system. Keep moist and when the risk of late frosts has passed and the first flowers have appeared – usually some time in May – help the young plants to acclimatise gradually to outdoor conditions by popping them outside during the day and bringing them in again in the evenings. After a few days transfer them to their final growing position. Secure the main stem to a sturdy cane and keep them well fed and watered during the growing season.
5.
Keeping the soil healthy is at the core of successful gardening, so continually feed and improve your soil quality and structure by adding copious amounts of home-made compost.

Local Tree Surgeons gain
Guttering Problems?
National Award
Eden Tree Specialists Ltd have recently attained the status of ARB Approved Contractor (ArbAC). The ARB Approved Contractor Scheme is the only comprehensive accreditation scheme for tree surgery businesses in the United Kingdom, operated by The Arboricultural Association. The scheme is increasingly demanded by Local Authorities and other large commercial organisations and is also of considerable benefit in the domestic sector as a quality mark, assuring the client of good quality tree care undertaken safely and efficiently. The scheme requires the contractor to meet high standards covering four key areas and then exhaustively tests all aspects of a tree-care business’s operation and management: -
• Their understanding and practical application of current arboricultural practice • Their compliance with legislative requirements of arboricultural contracting • Their compliance with health and safety requirements of arboricultural contracting (endorsed by the CHAS scheme) • Their high levels of service to clients through efficient business management. Samuel Dudley, Managing Director of Eden Tree Specialists Ltd said “Achieving this accreditation is of great importance to the business. This recognition gives our clients the assurance of our high standards of work. This means a huge amount to our whole team, as we work so hard to ensure that our working practices are at the very best level possible”.
