That’s where Home Counties Loft Ladders come in. The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50sqft of boarding and a light - all fully fitted in less than a day from just £355! But it’s not just the affordability of the package that makes Home Counties Loft Ladders stand out, as manager Jamie Oakley explains: ‘Our
watchwords are Quality, Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen, so our customers are assured of the best job.
- that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles. At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for
every installation we carry out!’ So, if you want to make use of your loft space, call Jamie free on 0808 301 9559 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!
Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford. Our business relies on referrals and we get a huge amount of our calls from people who have been referred to us by our existing customers

news COMMUNITY
BEDFORD BOROUGH COUNCIL VOLUNTEERS RECOGNISED FOR LONG SERVICE On Thursday 4 June, two Borough Council volunteers received the Silver Owl Award from SHARE Museums East: celebrating 25 years of volunteering. Cathy Moorhouse and Marian Harrington both started volunteering as part of The Higgins Learning Team, delivering and developing sessions for schools back in 1995. In that time they have seen the museum through many changes and developments, including its closure and redevelopment during which time they delivered learning sessions at schools, community centres and outdoors.
SHARE Museums East, who support excellence, resilience and cooperative working in museums across the East of England, invited Cathy and Marian to an online ceremony for the SHARE Volunteer Awards 2020. If you would like to volunteer at a cultural venue, please email Gemma at gemma.hutton@bedford.gov.uk. If you would be interested in volunteering in local parks and open spaces, contact volunteering@ bedford.gov.uk or to volunteer at Bedfordshire Archives and Records Services email archive@bedford.gov.uk.
TOWN CENTRE WORKS MEAN BOOST FOR BUSINESSES, CYCLISTS AND PEDESTRIANS Back in June, Mayor Dave Hodgson announced a boost for businesses in the town centre which will see changes to encourage pedestrians and cyclists.
The Council has been awarded ÂŁ121,000 by from the Government emergency active travel fund to help with the cost of the works.
The High street works, which started in late June, will see traffic on the High Street reduced to one lane, with average speed cameras to reinforce the 20mph speed limit. This will help pedestrians to visit High Street shops whilst socially distancing, particularly around people who may be queueing for shops.
The High Street works will form part of a wider provision for pedestrians and cyclists which will also see the addition of new cycle lanes and markings on four roads: River Street, Greyfriars, Bromham Road and the Embankment.
These changes were already planned through the Transporting Bedford project for this summer and, while permanent works have had to be put on hold due to the coronavirus outbreak, these changes will deliver wider pavements and a more pleasant shopping experience, supporting our town centre at this difficult time. The works also include the installation of semi-permanent bollards to demarcate the walking areas.

The works on the new cycle lanes are expected to take place later in the summer.

MP COLUMN
VIEWS FROM RICHARD FULLER,
MP FOR NORTH EAST BEDFORDSHIRE
Across Bedfordshire, as we emerge from lockdown, let us make investment in the renewal and expansion of our cycleways and footpaths a lasting feature of our future.
Many of us have been enjoying the outdoors during lockdown, spending more time than ever on long walks and cycle rides and commuting to work this way as an alternative to public transport. Boris Johnson described our post-lockdown future as a “new golden age for cycling” and the government has acted by allocating £250 million to an emergency active travel fund for temporary measures for cyclers and walkers. This includes funds for pop-up cycle lanes, safer junctions, widened pavements and cycle and bus-only streets and Bedford Borough and Central Bedfordshire Councils will together receive £1.5m in the first stage of a £2billion nationwide investment to provide ‘active travel’ and transform the way we make journeys. I welcome all these measures and will be buying my own bike to help my own physical and mental health. Travelling by bike or on foot is at the centre of new plans for encouraging people to commute if they can, placing less emphasis on cars and, in urban areas, public transport. The government has fast-tracked statutory guidance for councils

to reallocate road space for higher numbers of cyclists and pedestrians and I encourage our local councils to come forward with creative plans. As part of the guidance, some streets could become bike and bus-only and more side streets could be closed to through traffic to create low-traffic neighbourhoods and reduce rat-running. Having spoken to our local councillors, I know they are embracing this emergency investment and putting together plans on how the money will be spent.
Travelling by bike or on foot is at the centre of new plans for encouraging people to commute if they can, placing less emphasis on cars. This month, the government is also launching a £50 bicycle maintenance voucher to help people get their bikes out of the shed and make them roadworthy again. If you are not sure where to start on your journey, our local councils’ websites have lots of information on cycle routes and schemes. So, if you have not already done so, I would encourage you to dust off your bike and get out for a ride.

Over the past few months, Community Voluntary Service has been busy supporting groups in their response to the Covid-19 pandemic – and one aspect of this has been working to help ensure that volunteering needs are met across the county. The response to requests has been phenomenal and has demonstrated an undeniable public willingness to build and enrich community in difficult times. Whilst these difficult times are by no means over, our emphasis in volunteering is now starting to return to those organisations that are able to deliver their established essential services to communities. Some groups can offer services much as before; others are having to adapt extensively to enable social distancing, or move online; and many are responding to new and emerging needs as a consequence of Covid-19.
Lots of Bedfordians will have been volunteering for the first time, and experienced the satisfaction of being able to offer their skills and abilities to those in need. We hope that many of you will keep up this input and respond to one of the 100s of opportunities in local groups. If you would like to speak more about volunteering in Bedfordshire, our CVS advisor is happy to offer one to one sessions online to help you find the best fit. You can contact Paul at volunteering@cvsbeds.org.uk.
If you know what you would like to do, or prefer to find out what is available for yourself, all the information and applications can be made through our Simply Connect online system.

BY This is an app developed by the Vodafone Foundation for Smartphones that currently helps to research COVID – 19, cancer and the drugs that could potentially help to cure them. To do this, with the user’s consent, DreamLab accesses part of the device’s processing power. After downloading the app, the user can choose which cause they would like to help. While charging, the device will speed up the calculations of the Artificial Intelligence algorithm from the Imperial College London. Vodafone urges everyone to come together to support the new Corona-AI project – the more people that plug in and lend their smartphones’ computing power overnight, the quicker potential treatments for Covid-19 could be found.

BOOK REVIE
FOUND
by Erin Kingsley
It’s a parent’s worst nightmare: you are waiting for your child to come home from school and they don’t. This is the situation that Claire and Matt found themselves in when their 11-year-old son, Evan did not come home from school after football practice. The police are called, and the search is on. Claire and Matt are torn apart by the events and as the months drift on they give up all hope of Evan coming home. But, as the title suggests, Evan is indeed found. But the boy that returns to them is not the same boy that went missing. Refusing to talk to anyone he is withdrawn, only finding short moments of happiness and peace when visiting his grandparents on their farm. The police try to ascertain what happened but to no avail. Until another boy goes missing. What drew me to this book is the fact that the focus is on what happened AFTERWARDS. We all watch news reports of children who are abducted and sometimes there is a happy ending. For us, as onlookers, that is where the story ends. But is it possible for a a family just pick up and carry on as if nothing happened? How on earth do you rebuild those lost moments with your child?

STAGECOACH EAST BRANDS BUS
IN TRIBUTE TO CAPTAIN TOM MOORE
Stagecoach East is paying tribute to National Treasure Captain Tom Moore by branding a bus in his honour.
They are combating loneliness, supporting hospices and helping those facing bereavement.
The double decker features prominent adverts promoting the war veteran’s new Foundation and a life-size picture of him inside.
Passengers on the new bus will be encouraged to take Captain Tom selfies (social distancing and safety issues permitting) and, as part of Stagecoach’s current exact fare policy, any money over the price of a journey will be donated to the Foundation.
Captain Tom had always been active, even driving every day, until he slipped and fractured his hip two years ago. The care and after-treatment he received then, and earlier through a cancer scare, left him eternally grateful to so many people in the NHS. When the coronavirus pandemic struck, Captain Tom wanted to give something back to the healthcare staff who looked after him and were putting their lives on the line during the pandemic. His initial plan was to complete 100 laps of his garden, at 50 meters a time, before his hundredth birthday. He hoped to raise £1,000 for NHS charities. Over £32 million later, the centenarian has inspired a whole nation, and drawn praise and admiration from all around the world. Determined to do more, Captain Tom and his family have identified causes close to their hearts which will benefit from the newly formed Captain Tom Foundation. 22 Please mention bedslife when responding to adverts
The company is encouraging people to tweet their pictures to @Stagecoach_east The bus will initially be based in Captain Tom’s home town of Bedford but will then go into service at other depots including Cambridge, Peterborough and, possibly, other parts of the country. For more information about the Captain Tom Foundation, go to: https://captaintom.org

the family wellbeing programme the family wellbeing programme free webinars 6th - 13th july 2020 The Family Wellbeing Programme is an exciting and timely new initiative devised by outdoor learning and wellbeing specialists, Wild for Life, aimed at parents, grandparents and primary carers of children aged 4-12 years old. Wild for Life, in partnership with Frosts and with support from Greensand Country, will deliver three sets of three 1hr long webinars for parents, grandparents and primary carers in July, which will focus on how to manage the wellbeing of their children, with a particular focus on the detrimental effects of lockdown. The FREE webinars will demonstrate how outdoor environments and activities can be a catalyst for better mental and physical wellbeing. The Family Wellbeing Programme series will take place over three days, with activities to complete in between sessions, and will cover: How to assess your own wellbeing. How to assess, understand and improve your children’s wellbeing. Outdoor and nature-led activities to try with your children to help them understand and reflect on their thoughts and feelings. How and when to seek help. Lockdown has had a huge impact on wellbeing: for some it has been a positive experience, but for others it has been a complex juggling act, a strain on finances and relationships and period of uncertainty, stress and frustration. Children will be greatly unsettled by this period as they have had their regular routines turned upside down and, often, they struggle to process and express their thoughts and emotions. The free webinars will equip parents and carers with the tools they need to assess and improve the wellbeing of their families in order to move forward out of lockdown positively. They will also encourage and inspire families to explore, discover and reap the benefits of spending quality time outdoors in gardens and local natural landscapes.

WHAT WALKING CAN DO FOR YOUR HEALTH During lockdown I was furloughed, and my husband John had to work from home. We decided to use the time it usually took us to commute (an hour each way) to walk. We’d never really walked as a form of exercise before...we’d never really taken any form of exercise before, so this was something new. We worked out a route and as we were used to getting up at 6am to travel to our respective jobs and we decided that staying in that routine seemed sensible so we wouldn’t be too out of sync on our return to work. The mornings were gradually becoming lighter at the start of lockdown so although we were heading out early it wasn’t dark. We have walked for just over an hour every day for ten weeks and this is what we’ve discovered. Walking trims your waistline – Both John and I had the start of middle age spread. Over ten weeks I’ve dropped a dress size and John has discovered he’s wearing the trousers that prior to lockdown he’d been considering donating to charity. Walking relieves arthritis pain – After four weeks John noticed that his arthritis pain seemed less. This seemed counterintuitive so I consulted the arthritis society website and discovered that walking is recommended because it does indeed help reduce inflammation and stiffness in your joints. The important thing to remember is to walk ‘correctly’. Hold your head up; keep your neck, shoulders and back relaxed; swing your arms naturally, with a
30 Please mention bedslife when responding to adverts
slightly bent elbow; tighten your stomach muscles a little to give yourself a supported core, and breathe deeply as you walk. Walking improves your mental wellbeing – At the start of lockdown I think we both felt really anxious about all the uncertainty. As the weeks progressed, while we walked awe discussed our worries and thrashed out solutions to some of the problems we faced or might face. I certainly began to feel in a better place mentally and as though I could cope better with life in general. Being outside, breathing in the fresh air and enjoying the sunshine definitely helped to clear some headspace each day. Walking reduces blood pressure – Johns blood pressure had been sneaking upwards and just before lockdown our GP had been monitoring it with a view to him starting blood pressure medication. When it became clear that he wasn’t going to be examined by a doctor for some time I was concerned enough to buy a home blood pressure monitor online. We tested it out to make sure the readings matched those of the clinic then forgot about it! After six weeks (on the date he was supposed to have been returning the GP) we tried it and discovered his blood pressure was just within normal range. By week ten it was well within the normal range. Mine too has dropped significantly. Crucially throughout this period neither of us has felt like we were ‘exercising’. Walking felt natural and easy. I know this article is anecdotal and personal but there is plenty of research to support exercise being almost as important as diet in controlling type-2 diabetes; that it helps with balance and co-ordination and so helps to prevent falls in older people, meaning they are more likely to stay out of hospital, which at the moment is even more important than usual, and finally that it helps boost the immune system which is important for obvious reasons right now.

Nationally, 230 charities, social enterprises and voluntary groups have received the prestigious award this year. FA C E S & L AY E R 8 LAUNCH TECH4CHILDREN C A M PA I G N FACES & Layer 8 have launched a new service to tackle Digital Poverty in Bedfordshire. In partnership with the The Harpur Trust and High Sheriff of Bedfordshire, 2020-2021 they aim to distribute laptops to children and young people to ensure that they have equal access to learning and so that, through no fault of their own, they do not fall behind at school. In addition, It is also thought that in some areas of the UK up to 24% of children and young people do not have access to the internet and 70% do not even have access to IT equipment, leaving them unable to contact their friends, and critically unable to keep up with schoolwork. “In some families there is just one SmartPhone and they are trying to share that between multiple adults and children”, said
Wendie Harvey CEO of FACES. “We are extremely concerned about our families. The lack of access to technology at a time like this increases the poverty and education gap”.
Please get in touch if you have any working laptops that you would be willing to donate. Please email us at Tech4Children@layer8ltd. co.uk and they will send you further information on how to donate.

WOOD GREEN’S ADVICE
FOR IDENTIFYING BEHAVIOURAL ISSUES IN PETS Pets are creatures of habit and it’s likely that some owners will have seen a change in their beloved pets’ behaviour as a result of lockdown. Wood Green, The Animals Charity is warning owners that many of our furry friends, especially dogs, will experience separation anxiety as owners return to work and school – bringing yet another disruption. If you notice a sudden change in your pet’s physical or mental wellbeing, it’s advisable to get them seen by a vet first to rule out any physical causes. Next, you can address pets’ emotional state, which influences their behaviour. For dogs, chewing can be caused by boredom and barking can be caused by fear. For cats, feelings of frustration can lead to aggression. By getting a deeper understanding of why our pets behave the way they do, we can begin to manage their behaviour with different care techniques and training methods.
It can be incredibly stressful if you’re having trouble with a pet, so the best approach is to seek help as soon as possible. Wood Green offers free pet advice to anyone who needs it and can guide you at every step of your journey – whether you’re considering getting a new pet, or need help with an existing pet. Find out more at woodgreen.org.uk/pet-advice

RINGWORM I N C AT S AND DOGS
Despite its name, ringworm is a disease caused by a fungus, not a worm! In dogs and cats it causes patches of fur loss, sometimes with red skin underneath. People can catch ringworm too, and it usually causes raised red circles on the skin, which can be itchy.
HOW IS RINGWORM TREATED?
HOW IS RINGWORM DIAGNOSED?
IS RINGWORM CONTAGIOUS?
Your vet may suspect ringworm just by looking at your pet, but laboratory tests are needed to confirm the diagnosis and to check which type of fungus is causing the problem. A small amount of fur and skin scales are taken from the edge of the bald patch and sent to the lab for microscope examination and fungal culture. Results can take 2-3 weeks.
MY GP HAS DIAGNOSED ME WITH RINGWORM – HAVE I CAUGHT IT FROM MY PET?
Lots of other skin diseases (allergies, parasites, bacterial infections) can mimic ringworm. Ringworm is most common in puppies and kittens; pets that are kept in large groups of animals; and in pets with a lowered immune system as a result of other illness.
Clipping the coat and using a medicated shampoo or lotion can help with symptoms and reduce spreading of ringworm from your pet to the environment or to other animals and people. However, in most cases of ringworm that have affected the hair follicles, it is necessary to use a course of medication by mouth to clear up the infection for good. Yes, the ringworm fungus survives a long time in the environment and can be spread between animals and people. Pet owners with skin lesions should consult their GP. Hot washing bedding and towels, and wearing gloves / washing hands after handling affected pets is important.
Ringworm can be caught from pets, but it is also caught from other people – schools, public transport, gyms etc can be places where people have close contact and can spread the fungus between themselves. It is only likely that you have caught the ringworm from your pet if you have recently obtained a new pet (particularly a puppy or kitten) or your pet has patches of fur loss. Your veterinary surgeon will be able to examine your pet and advise further.

GARDENING
LOCKDOWN MUSINGS. Back in May garden centres became some of the first businesses allowed to reopen to the public. For gardeners stuck at home (even though we understood and supported the lockdown), it’s been a frustrating time. We’ve been unable to plant during one of the best springs I can ever remember. And for many of the UK’s growers it has been devastating. Millions of lost plants nurtured to be at their best by Easter were lost. The scale of the issue was mind-boggling. Garden centres and nurseries usually make the bulk of their income during the early growing season as people prepare their plots for the summer but instead they’ve been forced to compost or recycle millions of plants, leaving one in three growers in serious financial difficulties, with little possibility of recouping their losses later in the year. So, as we hit July is there anything easy which you can still plant, and which will still grow? The good news is yes.
40 Please mention bedslife when responding to adverts
Nasturtiums can be sown throughout this month. They are known for their brightly coloured flowers and attractive foliage. There are trailing, climbing, and dwarf varieties. The showy flowers can be single or double and come in fiery shades of reds, oranges, and yellows. Leaves are pale green and umbrella-shaped with long stems. They are the perfect flowers for beginner gardeners so if the kids have been dying to have a go at gardening these are your go-to plant. Sow the seeds and within 7-10 days, you should see sprouting. They are drought tolerant and ideal for hanging baskets and containers. Even better, you can add the flowers, buds and young leaves to salads, and they have the most wonderful peppery taste. Love-in-the-mist are easy to grow and have distinctive seed heads. These can be sown until early July and also again in September so they will get a head start for next year. Happy gardening, By Rachael Leverton

H E L P K E E P YO U N G TREES THRIVING
I N YO U R N E I G H B O U R H O O D Bedford Borough Council is joining with the Arboricultural Association, London Tree Officers Association, Municipal Tree Officers Association and the Association of Tree Officers in their campaign to ensure that newly planted trees are watered regularly over the summer months. Maintenance and watering of young trees is just as important as planting, and newly- planted trees need to be watered regularly over the summer months if they are going to become established and thrive. The dry weather which much of the UK experienced during April raised the question about how trees might be affected by COVID-19 if those people who ordinarily water them are no longer able to do so Bedford Borough Council has planted over 900 trees in the last 2 years but due to the dry spring, many of these trees are struggling to survive.
42 Please mention bedslife when responding to adverts
We are encouraging residents to get involved by watering newly planted trees – if you have a tree outside your home, or you pass by one while out exercising you can help. Cllr Charles Royden, Portfolio Holder for Environment said “Planting and ensuring trees become established and thrive is great for the environment, for local neighbourhoods, and to keep our Borough looking its best. “With the dry weather being experienced across the country, national organisations are encouraging people to help keep new trees watered and the Council is pleased to our add our voice to this locally. “Every bit of water helps, so if have a newly planted tree outside your home or nearby please do help us keep these trees healthy and growing.” If you would like to report a young tree in need of water, contact the tree team by email at customerservices@bedford.gov.uk or by calling 01234 267422
