every installation we carry out!’ So, if you want to make use of your loft space, call Jamie free on 0808 301 9559 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!

MANTON LANE FOOTBRIDGE Works have begun to build a new footbridge over Manton Lane, which will make it easier for pedestrians to cross this busy road, improve road safety, and reduce congestion. This new bridge is part of the Transporting Bedford works, which have already seen this stretch of Manton Lane widened, with new traffic signals installed to help ease congestion and make the road safer. Construction work on the foundations of the new bridge started in August, with the bridge expected to be complete and open by the end of the year. Preparation works to move utilities on Clapham

Road are also happening this Autumn, ahead of major works starting in the new year to help ease congestion in this area. This will see part-time signals introduced on the Paula Radcliffe Way / Great Ouse Way roundabout to help traffic flow better during peak times. The Manton Lane / Clapham Road roundabout will be reconstructed with full-time traffic signals and pedestrian and cyclist crossings, and Clapham Road will be widened to help create more space for traffic. Further details on this project will follow later this year.

BEDFORDSHIRE ARCHIVES MAP MARKS THE 75TH ANNIVERSARY OF VJ DAY. Bedfordshire Archives marked the 75th Anniversary of VJ Day (Saturday 15 August) by launching an interactive map of Bedfordshire in World War Two.

in the west, the new auxiliary fire service tender at Stotfold in the east and the Luton home guard in the south, the map has lots to explore.

This map enables people to explore some of the varied experiences of the war across the county online.

Each marker gives some detail about the place, and offers suggestions for exploring the stories further.

MP COLUMN

VIEWS FROM RICHARD FULLER,

MP FOR NORTH EAST BEDFORDSHIRE

One of the biggest challenges of our time will be to leave the environment better than how we found it. Last month I touched on how, as we recover from Covid-19, we must also deliver a UK economy which is stronger, cleaner and more sustainable. That is why tackling climate change should be at the heart of our economic recovery.

In 2019, the UK was the first major economy to legislate for net zero emissions by 2050. In delivering this, the government is looking to position the UK as a world leader in low carbon technologies. We have a strong UK base to grow from as there are almost half a million jobs in low carbon businesses and their supply chains and low carbon exports are already worth billions of pounds each year. To continue this momentum, the government has announced around £2 billion for new policies since setting the Net Zero targets.

At the same time, the Environment Bill will protect and improve the environment for future generations, enshrining in law environmental principles and legally-binding targets and establishing an independent regulator which can hold governments to account on their performance on environmental issues, including climate change.

A Green Recovery working group has also been created, bringing together businesses, business groups and leading academics, to unleash Britain’s growth potential and help the economy recover. In addition, Ministers are phasing out polluting vehicles and fuels and have published a landmark Clean Air Strategy and a 25 Year Environment Plan. The goals are simple: cleaner air and water; plants and animals which are thriving; and a cleaner, greener country for us all.

The government continues to be committed to creating new woodlands by planting more trees and is currently consulting on a new English Tree Strategy to expand tree cover, support woodland management and increase public engagement with trees and woodlands. Subject to consultation, the new strategy will help ensure the government’s tree planting commitment – to increase tree planting to 30,000 hectares per year across the UK by 2025 - is delivered. If you wish to have your say, please visit https://tinyurl.com/y35cb4xd

Please mention bedslife when responding to adverts

The recently launched “Planning for the future” consultation proposes reforms of the planning system to modernise the planning process, bring a new focus to design and sustainability and improve the system of developer contributions to infrastructure. The aim is to build environmentally friendly homes that will not need to be expensively retrofitted in the future, homes with green spaces and new nearby parks and where tree lined streets are the norm.

NEW COVID-19 WALK-IN TESTING CENTRE

IS OPENING THIS WEEK IN BEDFORD BOROUGH The centre, based in Prebend Street car park, is operating on a walk-in basis for anybody in the borough who needs a test, and will be open every day from Friday. As a walk-in site, residents must either walk or cycle to the site, not drive or take public transport. Strict safety control measures will be in place; a face covering will need to be worn and social distancing must be followed at all times.

Cllr Louise Jackson, Portfolio Holder for Health and Wellbeing said, “If you are experiencing any of these symptoms; a new, persistent cough, high temperature, loss or change in sense of smell or taste, you should immediately isolate at home with the rest of your household, and arrange a test. “Anyone testing positive for Covid-19 will be helped by the NHS test and trace service to identify recent contacts so that they can be alerted.” Test results will be available within 24-72 hours of completing the test. People testing positive should self-isolate for seven days, with other people in their household needing to isolate for 14 days. Drive through testing is also still available in Bedford. These appointments must be booked in advance. To book a test, visit nhs.uk/ coronavirus or call 119, seven days a week.

woods on our walks. There are lots of great ‘pick your own’ farms in and around Bedfordshire too.

Go outdoors for some ‘berry’ good fun this September! This month is a great time to forage for wild blackberries - a wonderful and timeless family activity, especially for children! My two absolutely love hunting for blackberries. It’s an activity I remember doing with my parents and grandparents as a child. We take small buckets and gather the blackberries from hedges and

If you are foraging outdoors, make sure you stick to designated footpaths and teach your little ones that there are some berries we can eat and others that will make us poorly. Encourage them to show you all the berries they pick so you can tell them if they are safe to eat. Don’t forget to give the berries a good wash before enjoying eating them together and don’t over pick - leave some for nature and for others too. Why not make something tasty with them when you get home? Try throwing them in with your apple crumble or adding them to your yoghurt.

12 Please mention bedslife when responding to adverts

You could even introduce some taste safe sensory play. Let your children have fun squishing the blackberries onto some paper and seeing what patterns they can make. Or get them to mash them up and then use a paint brush to paint with. For more ideas like this follow @mammas_house on Instagram

BEDFORDSHIRE RAMBLERS

Bedfordshire Area Ramblers will be offering:Pop up walks. These small group walks are aimed at non Rambler members and for people who don’t like walking alone. Pop Out time challenge. BOOK REVIEW

THE CLOCKMAKER’S DAUGHTER

by Kate Moreton

Getting married is one of those big events in your life that changes everything. For Elodie, plans for her upcoming wedding are being pulled away from her by her controlling future mother-in-law. Elodie works as an archivist in London and one day discovers an old satchel, an old photo, and an old sketch of a large house that will change everything and lead Elodie on a quest to discover the truth about the house and the lady in the photograph. Was she meant to find these items and how are they ultimately connected to her own past? Kate Morton is known for epic sagas – and at nearly 600 pages this is no exception. Told in multiple timelines, the action moves swiftly from the present to the 1880s, the early 1900s, and the 1940s as the story of the house and its inhabitants unfold. With a vast cast of characters this does require some concentration to keep track of who’s who, and sometimes the story changes time period just as you were becoming engrossed. However, it is worth persevering. Part love story, part ghost story, part murder mystery, and part commentary on social class divide in the Victorian era Morton brings the various stories vividly to life on the page. Who is the clockmaker’s daughter and how did she come to linger at Birchwood Manor? And how will this all help Elodie come to terms with the path that her own life is about to take?

PLANNING FOR A BETTER FUTURE

FOR ALL

Like many small independent charities, Bedford Daycare Hospice has faced some new unique challenges during the coronavirus pandemic The Hospice was asked to close its doors to day patients in March. Patients with life-limiting illnesses are among the most vulnerable in society and attending a day hospice posed too much of a risk to their health, so whilst unable offer the face-to-face support that patients and their carers rely on, staff at the Hospice have been finding new ways to offer much needed services to the community.

“When I asked for help I was desperate for my life to turn back into some type of normal but I didn’t know where to start or how to grieve for dad, nothing made sense until Jane understood my pain. She helped me put my jigsaw back together again so I could understand my feelings and accept dad had gone. Her kindness and understanding of how I felt really helped no end. She has changed my life for the better again”

Confidential sessions of up to an hour via the telephone or video link are available and faceto-face support will be offered once it is safe A grant from the BCLF and the L&Q Foundation has to do so. FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY’S

Members’ meetings were curtailed from the beginning of lockdown as they usually take place on school premises. Recently we had our first Zoom members’ meeting with Jenny Mallin, a speaker whose talk was entitled “A Grandmother’s Legacy”. She was an excellent speaker and illustrated her talk with many photos and pictures illustrating where the family lived and worked in India from 1732. The “Legacy” was a cookery book containing family recipes not only from Yorkshire but from her grandmother’s life in India and had been passed down through 5 generations. We intend to continue with speakers on Zoom for the foreseeable future as it adds to our members’ connection with the Society wherever they are in the world and will hopefully encourage younger historians to join the Society in order to access this facility. If agreeable to the speaker it is planned that the talks will remain on line for a limited time following the Zoom meeting. At the moment we’re not able to give a date when our normal meetings will resume but will pass on the information to BedsLife when possible. In the meantime, why not join our Society and see what interesting facts can be learned about genealogy by logging onto our website and Members’ Portal? www.bfhs.org.uk

A VERY DIFFERENT

SATURDAY 12TH SEPTEMBER 2020 The Beds & Herts Historic Churches Trust runs the Bike ‘n Hike on the second Saturday of September each year to raise money both for the Trust and for the participating churches, with half of the sponsorship money going to each. It is even more important than ever this year because churches have been closed for so long. Churches have lost income from services and other fundraising events and buildings deteriorate even when not in use. The Bike ’n Hike is key to enabling the Trust to continue to give grants to churches and chapels for the care of their buildings, which are so important in the lives of our towns and villages. The Trust is nondenominational and the Bike ‘n Hike is supported by many different denominations. Grants are available to any place of public Christian worship of whatever age. The church’s share of the money raised can be used for any of the church’s activities, not just building projects. It is open to everyone to take part, whether church-goer or not, bikers, hikers and other visitors, whether by car, mobility scooter or horse. 24 Please mention bedslife when responding to adverts

Although this year things will be very different, the objective is still to visit as many churches and chapels as you can to obtain sponsorship for your efforts. However, because of the Covid-19 pandemic – · Assume that churches will not be open · There will be no-one to welcome you · There may be no refreshments · Toilets are unlikely to be available · There will be no Register of Visitors · Please sign your own sponsor form · Stay safe and enjoy the day If you take selfies at churches to show where you have visited, upload the best onto our Facebook page accessed through www.b-n-h.co.uk/publicity.htm After the event, everyone who has taken part should give the money raised to their Church Organiser, together with their sponsorship forms. The Church Organiser then submits them to the Treasurer using the remittance form which also asks for details needed by BHHCT to return the

BIKE ’N HIKE church’s share of the money. Sponsorship money can be gift-aided, which increases the amount by 25% courtesy of the tax man. This gift aid is kept by the Trust to add to the money available for grants. The Trust uses JustGiving to make it even easier to collect sponsorship money. Any participant can create a page on JustGiving and use email or social media to encourage friends and relatives to sponsor their efforts. Some larger companies run matched giving schemes. You may wish to check whether your employer will support your efforts. There are electronic means to save handling cash – JustGiving, bank transfers from sponsors and to Church Organisers.

Folk of all ages are encouraged to take part but please be aware of personal safety and take appropriate care. · Follow Government guidance on Covid-19, extant at the time · If you enter a church, touch as little as possible · Take hand sanitiser · Take your own refreshments · Remember the Highway Code · Use off road routes where possible If Government re-imposes restrictions, the event may need to be cancelled. BEDFORD BOROUGH LIBRARIES

LAUNCH SELECT AND COLLECT SERVICE Bedford Borough Council is beginning the phased reopening of library services.

wear a face covering when visiting a library, unless you have a legitimate reason not to.

With lockdown measures easing over the summer various shops and other facilities locally began to open. The Council has been closely monitoring the impact of these changes on the local rate of infections and is confident that it is safe to begin a cautious and phased reopening of leisure and culture services, with stringent infection prevention measures in place.

Customers will also be able to use the request service to choose specific titles through Arena, the online catalogue, and to pick them up from the library. This is perfect for customers who know the exact title they are after.

Bedford Central and Kempston libraries will be open for a new ‘Select and Collect’ service, as well as for customers to return books they have had on loan during lockdown. Select and Collect gives customers the opportunity to borrow library books again by making requests based on their favourite genres or subjects, online or via the phone. Library staff will then choose books based on these preferences and issue them to customers, who will be notified when they are ready to collect from library entrances during Select and Collect opening times. Please remember that you must

30 Please mention bedslife when responding to adverts

When books are returned they will be quarantined for 72 hours, and safety measures have been developed for the selection, issuing and packing of books for collection. Customers will also be able to return the items they have at home to Bedford Central and Kempston libraries during Select and Collect hours. Due dates will continue to be extended for any items already on loan, and charges will remain paused for any items that are already overdue. More information about how the service works, including opening times, will be available by visiting the Virtual Library website or by calling the Select and Collect Line on 01234 718178 from Monday to Saturday between 11.00am and 4.00pm.

Back to School – Back to Normal? If you have school-aged children then you may have found that the last few months have been – to put it mildly – challenging. A recent YouGov poll [www. yougov.co.uk] found that a third of UK parents haven’t coped very well. They’ve struggled with home schooling, citing discipline, motivation and finding adequate time as the main issues they faced. Others said that they couldn’t access the resources they needed, including things like laptops and help from schools. The Summer holidays are usually a time for families to leave the school gates firmly behind them and take a nice long break. But no doubt for many parents this year has been a different story. For some children the drastic changes to routine, the isolation from their friends and teachers, and the move to online lessons, being taught or supervised by one or more parent, and even having exams cancelled, risks causing long-term damage to their educational progress. Some parents may have felt pressured

into continuing learning through the holidays to give their children a chance to catch up. And not everyone can afford private tuition, which puts the better-off pupils at a distinct advantage. The Institute of Fiscal Studies warns that any further prolonged school closures “are almost certain to increase educational inequalities.” [www.ifs.org.uk] The impact on children’s mental health also cannot be ignored. School is one of the key focal points in children’s lives, giving them stability, meaning, selfworth, esteem, and a purpose. When children are not with their classmates and friends they are not learning how to interact, and much of this learning is done in the playground. In June the government advisory group Sage warned that both children and teachers will need a lot of psychological support once things return to normal because their lives will have been so badly disrupted by school closures. The current plan* is for all schools in England to fully re-open at the start of the Autumn term in September 2020 and for all children to return full time. This includes those with special educational needs and disabilities, and those who have been shielding. The only exceptions are if they

32 Please mention bedslife when responding to adverts

or someone close to them has Covid-19 or is displaying the symptoms. Should a school have a suspected coronavirus outbreak, teachers will liaise with local health teams with the aim of keeping as much of the school open as possible. And should it be necessary to close completely then they are expected to have a homeworking plan ready to go. It will remain to be seen just how well both educators and families deal with the new version of daily school life come September. Many teachers will have spent their Summers working on their back-to-school strategies which this year will look and feel very different from previous years with a plethora of additional measures needed to make sure children, parents and staff feel safe. Whatever the new school term looks like for you and your family, we wish you all well. KEEPING

CHICKENS Chickens are becoming increasingly popular pets. It can be nice to give an ex-farmed chicken a happy retirement in your garden; or there are many fancy breeds of chicken available.

EGGS FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION

HOW MANY CHICKENS SHOULD I KEEP?

Eggs should be collected daily and are best kept in a cool cupboard. The date should be marked onto them with a pencil, so that you can ensure that they are consumed within 3 weeks. Because backyard chickens are rarely vaccinated against Salmonella, these eggs should always be cooked before eating.

ACCOMMODATION

Dirty eggs should be discarded because the germs on the outside of the shell can contaminate the egg inside. It is NOT safe to wash eggs (dirty or otherwise) as this removes the protective coating on the outside of the shell and makes it easier for bacteria to move inside. If you are having to discard a lot of dirty eggs, look again at trying to keep the chicken run clean and well drained, and ensure that there is a good layer of clean shavings in the nest boxes.

Chickens are flock birds and it would not be natural for them to be kept singly. They are also quite territorial and can bully and peck each other, so it is important that they are not overcrowded. Keepers of more than 50 birds are required to register with DEFRA. Generally, three chickens will lay enough eggs to meet the needs of a family, but be aware that chickens usually stop or reduce laying during the winter.

Chicken accommodation should include a secure run (maybe with some paving stones down because soil will become very messy in wet weather) and an enclosed, insulated shelter with separate nesting boxes.

If your chickens are unwell and being treated with medication prescribed by your vet it will usually be necessary to stop eating the eggs for a certain period of time. Your vet will advise you further.

GARDENING

DAZZLING DAHLIAS The dahlia originates from Mexico and there are 30 species and around 20,000 cultivars! Don’t let its exotic past fool you; it hails from high mountain regions so is happy in cool, wet, and windy conditions. It doesn’t matter what size your garden is there is a dahlia for you, from dwarf varieties to giants. There is even one variety (Imperialis) that can reach 6m (20 feet) in the wild in its native South America.

Dahlias come in the most amazing array of colours.

If your garden is on the exposed side, or you live in the north then look for the pompom varieties as the colourful globes are very hardy, standing up to the worst of the British weather.

Dahlia ‘Cornel Brons’ produces wonderful round copper-coloured architectural flowers. They are long-lasting and make spectacular cut flowers. They look good in the middle of a border because they grow to 90cm.

Dahlia bulbs are comprised of tubers. In order to sprout the tuber must have an ‘eye’. If you live in a very cold area, you can dig up the tubers at the end of the season and plant them out again the following year. My garden is quite sheltered, so I simply cut them down and mulch them. I learned the hard way that mulched dahlias survive and thrive much better than unmulched plants. Dahlia tubers are hungry beasts and don’t take kindly to being undernourished. The first year I planted them I didn’t mulch and the second year the flowers were sparse and undersized. On the advice of a neighbour I fed them, mulched them, and watered them through the hot season, and they returned in full vigour the following year. 38 Please mention bedslife when responding to adverts

‘Lubega Power Yellow-Orange’ sounds like a toilet cleaner but is in fact a gloriously tropical dwarf bedding dahlia which produces masses of double flowers well into autumn if you deadhead it regularly. At 30cm you can plant it at the front of the border or in window boxes to brighten the dullest of days.

For gardeners who prefer a more subtle or unusual colour palette: Dahlia ‘Cafe aux Lait produces enormous exquisite blooms in a soft apricot-pink colour, which fade to vintage cream. It’s the perfect dahlia for creating a focal point toward the back of the border as it grows to 120cm. Dahlia ‘Creme de Cassis’ has stunning two-tone petals on water lily-shaped flowers. It grows to 90cm so is good for the middle of a border and also looks fabulous in a big pot. By Rachael Leverton

GARDEN WASTE COLLECTIONS

RETURN TO FORTNIGHTLY As of Monday 17 August, garden waste collections have now returned to fortnightly collections. These collections were suspended and then reintroduced on a monthly basis to ensure that the bin crews could continue an uninterrupted collection of household waste and recycling, whilst ensuring they could social distance. Now, with crews stabilised the Council is reintroducing garden waste collections on a normal schedule of every two weeks, with the recycling collections. You can check your bin collection dates at www.bedford.gov.uk/bins, and the schedule will be back to normal so if you have a printed calendar for your bin collections this year that will also be correct.

Mayor Dave Hodgson said “Our bin crews have worked really hard to keep the household waste, and recycling collections going, alongside a monthly garden waste collection and the special temporary garden waste facility at Oasis Pool. “Thanks to all their work, we are now able to get back to business as usual and we are confident that our crews can deliver this while staying on top of the priority household waste and recycling collections. I know lots of people left notes and pictures expressing your gratitude to theses everyday heroes, and I’d like to add my thanks to yours.

SPORT

BEDFORD TOWN FOOTBALL CLUB Its been a busy month at The Eyrie as The Eagles started their preseason campaign while welcoming one of their best-known players back to the club. Rene Howe started his Bedford Town career as a young child, which progressed to first team football, and then onto the English Football League, via Kettering Town for clubs including Peterborough United. Now as a 33-year-old he has returned to the club where it all started. Eagles owner Jon Taylor said of Howes return “Rene is a Bedford lad, and I’m delighted he has chosen us to come back and play for once more.” On the pitch preseason matches, are underway. First up was the visit of Potton United who emerged as narrow winners against Bedford’s experimental side. Next came near neighbours Bedford FC and a trip to March Town United where the Eagles won the day. Peterborough Sports visit to the Eyrie has proved the trickier, with them winning 3-1. Limited

When Bedslife went to press, the new season was due to start on the 19th of September, when its hoped fans will be allowed back into the ground. Before that, in their first competitive match Bedford Town are away to Daventry Town in the preliminary round of The Emirates FA Cup on Saturday 12 September.
