BEAUTY EXPERTS
When you're aiming for true head-swiveling beauty, you have to look at the big picture. That's the strategy Eva Scrivo uses to keep her loyal clientele lining up for appointments at her two Manhattan salons. "I consider the whole person," she says. "I appraise a woman's skin and hair, but also her look and what she'll be open to." Then Scrivo plays up each feature to its
prettiest potential within that person's style boundaries-think of her as one part makeup maestro, two parts hair whisperer. Her know-how may be inborn (her grandfather was a barber), but it's also the result of a lifetime of experience (she started coloring her mother's hair at age 10). Here, Scrivo shares her best advice and her trusted, go-to products.

Scrivo's Must-Haves for Hair "People are often mystified by hairstyling," Scrivo says. "They think only a stylist can make their hair look great, but it's just a matter of learning simple techniques and having the proper tools." She reaches for moisture-packed products to keep her hair soft yet strong, and styling aids with time-tested results.

Wherever she goes, Scrivo brings this sturdy grooming brush. She gives her hair several strokes whenever it needs smoothing or the ends feel a little dry. "The brush has boar bristles, which are great because they carry the natural oils from your scalp to your ends, where most people need moisture," she explains. "And its accompanying plastic bristles are slightly longer than the boar ones, so they really grab all your strands." Scrivo recommends the brush for all hair types, even very curly. "This is the quickest, easiest, and least expensive way to give your hair a deep treatment without even getting it wet," she says.

"Most women overwash their hair, which doesn't usually get dirty enough to call for daily cleansing," says Scrivo. To keep her locks evenly hydrated from roots to ends, she shampoos every other day with this rich Italian wash. Its pearly white formula contains linseed oil-a flaxseed extract-and "leaves hair incredibly shiny," she says. As a money-saving measure, she suggests alternating it with your favorite shampoo from the drugstore. If daily cleansing is a must, however, she likes the very mild Kerastase Bain Satin Shampoo line ($29 each, kerastase-usa.com for stores).
After washing her hair, Scrivo twists out as much water as possible and then applies a small scoop of this superluxe treatment. Its creamy, puddingthick formula contains nourishing essential oils to repair damage. "It really strengthens the hair shaft," she says. "And unlike other deep conditioners, it doesn't weigh hair down." Scrivo distributes the treatment with a widetoothed comb, waits five minutes, and rinses. For fine hair, she likes Kerastase Masque Age Recharge ($58, kerastaseusa. com for stores), which reinforces strands with lipids and vitamin E.
Scrivo occasionally lets her hair air-dry, allowing her natural waves to take shape. She applies a dime-size amount of this product while her hair is damp-working from midshafts to ends-because "it gives curls shine and good separation without stickiness." When she wants to blow-dry her hair silky straight, she uses KerastaseLait Nutri-Sculpt instead ($29). Scrivo distributes this milky smoothing serum from damp roots to ends, and then enlists a Turbo PowerT~nTurboCeramic & Ionic 3~oo hair dryer ($200, turbopower inc. com for stores). "We use this model at the salons," she says. "Ionic dryers help prevent damage and really do cut drying time in half."

To set a style or regulate flyaways, Scrivo spritzes this all-purpose spray on dry hair. "Unlike most products, which can leave hair rock-hard and glossy, this one goes on a little powdery and dries matte, so the results look more natural," she says. "And if you don't like the style you created, you can brush it out and start over." For anyone traveling abroad, she recommends stockingup on L'Oreal Elnett hair spray (not officially available for purchase in the United States). It's a backstage staple at fashion shows and a cult favorite among many hairstylists. "It provides incredible hold and flexibility," she says.
Her Favorites for the Face "1see it with my clients and 1see it in myself-how you treat your body definitely affects how you look," Scrivo says. She aims for eight hours of sleep a night, practices yoga regularly, drinks plenty of water, and eats nutrient-dense meals. Then she relies on these skin salves and cosmetics to do the rest of the work.

Many of us accept blemishes as a fact of life, but Scrivo helps prevent them with this light herbal serum. "I spread a thin layer on my skin at night after washing my face," she says. "It keeps everything clear." The watery formula contains lactic acid, a natural ingredient found in milk, to unclog pores and eliminate buildup, as well as calendula to reduce redness and inflammation. Before applying makeup or sunscreen, she puts on Yon- Ka Fluid Optimizer ($55), a line-smoothing treatment with skin-hydrating hyaluronic acid. "It's very toning and provides just the right amount of slip for applying foundation."

Scrivo achieves a flawless complexion with this creamy, pigment-rich foundation. To warm up the product and make it easier to spread, she first pumps a pea-size amount onto the back of her hand. Then she uses a nylon foundation brush to blend the makeup-focusing only on the places she requires it most. "No one needs to wear a full face of foundation," she notes. This cover-up contains meadowfoam seed oil, a humectant that draws moisture from the air to the skin; antioxidant vitamins C and E; and microfine light-reflecting pigments. "I love its smooth feel and weight-it goes on thin," she says.
To give her cheeks a subtle glow, Scrivo looks to this finely milled blush. "I apply it in a C shape underneath the cheekbones, toward the hairline, to define them in a naturallooking way," she explains. The coppery shade, she says, works on all skin tones, and the gold lightdiffusing particles give your face a sunny disposition even on a dreary winter day. Remember that the tool you use to apply it is just as important as the makeup itself. "You can forgo the tiny brush that comes in the compact," she says. "Instead, use an angled blush brush with goat hair, which gives an even, soft wash of color." Her favorite is the T. LeClerc Professional Blush Brush ($35, bameys.com).

After using a curler on her eyelashes, Scrivo thickens them with this mascara. But getting defined, clump-free lashes is also about technique: She wiggles the wand slightly into the base of her lashes to grab and separate all the hairs. Then she moves the wand up slowly to the tips to distribute the mascara evenly. "This one is very rich and has great lash-building power," she says. "And it works really well on women with thin or light-colored lashes." She likes standard black, but suggests brown for a softer look during the day. When her lids need some extra definition, Scrivo paints on Stila Smudge Pots gel eyeliner ($16, sephora.com) with an angled liner brush. "The formula really lasts the entire day," she says.
To moisturize her lips and prevent lipstick's migratory tendencies, Scrivo smooths this waxy balm over her mouth before applying color. Unlike slick, glossy formulas, it feels tacky to the touch and leaves a clear, matte finish. Then, she uses a lip brush to paint on T. leClerc Satin lipstick in Charnel ($23, eluxury .com), her favorite lip color. "It's a sheer, icy pink," she says. And the best accessory for pretty lips? Pearly white teeth. Scrivo maintains hers by rinsing with a mix of equal parts water and hydrogen peroxide each morning, a tip from her dentist. "It tastes a little strange," she says. "But it kills bacteria and keeps your teeth bright."
