Chayah Development Project is set to open a base right here in Stapleford.

Chayah Development Project and Stapleford

Community Group have supported one another for several years now, working alongside the Police, Stapleford Youth Club, and other partner organisations to help tackle anti-social behaviour and work with local youngsters.Having a base in Stapleford will also make it easier to reach out and work with others in the wider communities.Work has already started to bring the base to life, and we would all like to thank The Nottingham Building Society for supporting such a great initiative right here in Stapleford. The project is designed to empower and energize our community to look at our ‘here and now’ and grow into tomorrow by maintaining a grassroots approach to our services.

Chayah in Hebrew means “LIFE RESTORER” and is Pronounced – khaw-yaw’! The name in itself is symbolic as we aspire to bring back life to our beneficiaries and community. Over the last few years, the projects has expanded its arms into diverse support services and continues to evolve with each year.

We value the voices of our beneficiaries and have been working hard to build long lasting sustainable relationships with different partner organisations across the county and the country at large.

We give support, training sessions, seminars, personal coaching to make sure our beneficiaries not only discover their identity but live to their full potential! We work on personal levels and with other agencies to make sure that our service users will be well equipped to face any future challenges and sign post them to where they can receive the relevant help they require.

We aim to build stronger communities by looking at where we are, what changes can be made and how we can get to the future we envision. We aim to leave a legacy, so that our next generations will be able to step into their future and achieve all their dreams with courage and faith to seize every opportunity!

We want to reach the broken, lost, marginalized, forgotten, the hopeless and show them that there is still a chance to come out of where they are and achieve a life they only imagined!

Chayah relies on funding and the donations of our community and as many different organisations have had to make serious adjustments during the pandemic. We continue to strive to reach our communities even now with food Bank and other means of support. As long as we are able, we will continue to breath life into our community. Services.

Councillor Richard MacRae

Stapleford North Ward

Stapleford Town Council

Broxtowe Borough Council

0774 034 4427 @CllrRichMacRae

Having attended my first full Stapleford Town Council meeting since being elected I was very nervous to be sat at the table.

The last item on the agenda was a motion I put forward regarding Stapleford Cemetery Chapel, I enjoyed the debate and was so happy that my proposal received unanimous support from all of the Town Councillors.

A motion has been submitted under Paragraph 9 of the Town Councils Standing Orders. It is moved by Cllr D MacRae and seconded by Councillor L Longford.

It relates to the condition and use of Stapleford Cemetery Chapel, some background information is attached at Appendix 2 (Page 37) . The Motion is:

That Stapleford Town Council resolves to make further enquiries into what is required to become a partner with other groups and organisations such as Broxtowe Borough Council and Bramcote Crematorium to help secure the future of Stapleford Cemetery Chapel. A full report/presentation to be brought to a future meeting of Full Council.

APPENDIX 2

Report and Proposal for the Stapleford Cemetery Chapel

Stapleford Cemetery Chapel is a grade 2 listed building built in 1880 of brick and ashlar construction with ornate iron work matching the cemetery railings and gates. All but the main spire ironwork has been removed, probably during the war years. At some point in the 1950s three extensions had been added proving public and staff toilets. The chapel fell out of use some 36 plus years ago, with the bell being silenced/ rested around 46 years ago, probably due to structural concerns with the spire. Without a use the site has slowly fell into disrepair, which has attracted vandalism and below standard repair work.

Since 2010, Broxtowe Borough Council has invested heavily; various restoration works have taken place by Broxtowe’s Public Building Maintenance to save/maintain the site. Starting with the demolition of the derelict 1950’s extensions and the reinstatement of the trefoil windows where they had been removed for previously mentioned extension access. In 2012, the chapel roof was replaced, 2014/15 the mortuary roof along with the Notts Ogee cast iron rainwater goods and spire was replaced/refurbished, failed stones replaced and the renovation of the remaining spire iron work.

In 2019 the Bell was fully restored by Taylor Bell Foundry who originally cast the bell.

Proposal

The aim is to ensure the site is of benefit to the community of Stapleford and South Broxtowe. Providing a place for meetings, services of remembrance, funerals, even a wedding venue and when required a polling station too, as the present site used during elections is marked for development. The chapel would be fitted with a unisex DDA toilet facilities, the suspended ceiling (possible 1980’s addition) would be removed to reveal the vaulted hardwood structure as originally intended. This feature will be highlighted with up-lights. Windows would be renovated and where required reinstalled, the outer fibre glass protection would be removed and replaced with protection more sympathetic to the building.Once the site is in use it would secure maintenance funding and have a solid future. Further refurbishment is required to repair and/or replace failed stones and previous poor workmanship. Upon completion Broxtowe would seek the removal of the building from the County Council’s Building at Risk Register.

Proposed Motion:

That Stapleford Town Council resolves to make further enquiries into what is required to become a partner with other groups and organisations such as Broxtowe Borough Council and Bramcote Crematorium to help secure the future of Stapleford Cemetery Chapel. A full report/presentation to be brought to a future meeting of Full Council.
