From the president’s desk

To all junior livestock exhibitors:

Friendships, scholarships, buckles and “no bad hair days!’ That’s what the Junior Beefmaster Breeders Association (JBBA) is all about, along with developing the leaders for tomorrow’s cattle industry. By joining JBBA and participating in the many association sponsored events, you will find long lasting friendships with other kids from across the country. Scholarship opportunities are plentiful for JBBA members. Every year thousands of dollars in scholarships are awarded to our junior members. One goal of JBBA is to prepare young people for success in life and to become leaders. Besides the show ring, opportunities exist in public speaking, livestock judging, industry knowledge, and leadership skills. As for “no bad hair days,” our cattle are shown without their hair coats artificially presented. The hair may be clipped or laying flat against the body. This

is the easiest way to show a beef animal. You don’t have all the hair training, ice baths, cool rooms or professional groomers! The true thickness and bone of the animal is evident. Become a part of the organization that emphasizes “family and friendships” as an integral part of being a junior member. Join JBBA today and get a “Beefmaster” this year for your project. A JBBA membership application is located on page 17 of this magazine. §

Top Ten Showmanship Tips

S

howmanship is often considered an art by show cattle enthusiasts. Good showmen are appreciated, admired and even sought after by breeders of high quality cattle since the technique and skill of the person on the end of the halter often makes the difference between winning and losing in the ring. As breeders who strive to get our cattle into the most capable of showmen’s hands, here are the top ten showmanship tips that we recommend to help juniors exhibit their cattle each time they enter the ring. 1. Blend in. Remember that

the judge’s focus should be on the animal being shown, not the showman. Many of the best showmen are the ones that you do not notice. Wearing solid colors and minimal “bling” in the show ring, maintaining good control and moving your body only when necessary are great ways to achieve this and look like a professional in the show ring. 2. Walk your animal into place. Good showmen have their animal looking its very best

By Adam and Hannah McCall

every moment they are in the show ring. This means stopping their calf in the set up position every time. Practicing at home and getting your heifer or steer used to stopping with their feet placed correctly will help tremendously in the chase for a showmanship banner. 3. Set the animal up appropriately. Your heifer or steer should be set up to highlight their good attributes and minimize their faults. This may be a little different for each animal, but the basics are: 1) feet squarely planted and rear legs offset; 2) head up; 3) neck straight; 4) tail down; 5) top slightly down; 6) ears forward. 4. Exude confidence. Some traits of great showmen cannot be taught; they come from within. Confidence is one of those, but it is key. Believe in yourself and the hard work you have put into your animal. Hold your head up, keep your shoulders down, make eye contact with the judge and move with intention.

10 - The Banner - Beefmaster Breeders United

5. Leave space. One way to spot an experienced and knowledgeable showman is to see how much space they leave between their own heifer or steer and the one in front of or beside them. Four to five feet between each animal ensures that each showman has space to circle their animal or move them forward and gives the judge plenty of room to see each animal individually. 6. Be slow and steady. Slow and smooth movements, especially when scratching, keep your animal calm and help achieve the confident look that manytime champion showmen often have. Making quick, jerky movements can make cattle nervous and draw attention to the showman rather than the animal. 7. Be aware of your surroundings. Watch the judge, but also be aware of what is going on around you. When calves in front of you are placed, move forward. If an animal gets loose, be prepared. If the showman behind you pulls their calf too close to yours, use a little of that extra space you left in front of you.

8. Make the most of the show ring area. When walking, stay close to the outside of the ring. This allows the judge the best view of your animal and gives you plenty of room to work. 9. Keep the animal between you and the judge. When turning or circling your animal to re-set up, keep the calf between you and the judge to allow the judge the best view to see the animal instead of you, the showman. 10. Be a good sport. Help your fellow showmen by using your hand (not your show stick) to encourage animals in front of you to walk when necessary and keep your animal in line with the others, especially on the profile. ยง

JBBA: We’re Raising More Than Just Cattle

T

By Seth Byers, JBBA President

he Junior Beefmaster Breeders Association (JBBA) has different aspects that impact both breeders, buyers and participants. Each year JBBA hosts the JBBA National Show and Convention, which is held in various areas of the country. The 2017 National Show and Convention will be held in Wichita Falls, Texas from July 16 – 22. At nationals many events occur such as: public speaking, livestock judging, the herdsman quiz, coloring contests, a bred and owned show, showmanship, Beefmaster Advancer/E6 heifer show,a bull show,

to the JBBA program. During the awards banquet the top all around awards are presented to a junior division exhibitor, intermediate division exhibitor and senior division exhibitor. Several award scholarships are also presented during the banquet. Along with all the fun activities offered at nationals, JBBA offers many programs that help junior breeders improve their herds. One of these programs is the JBBA A.I. Program. Each year Beefmaster Breeders United (BBU) members nominate bulls to participate

an ultrasound contest and the national junior heifer show. Each of these events are not only fun, but they also teach the participant something new that will help them improve in different aspects of their life, as well as help them to excel and achieve greatness in the future. At nationals there is a banquet to honor all the award winners and each individual that has contributed

in the JBBA A.I. Program. Each bull that is nominated is then compiled into a brochure, then JBBA members are able to purchase semen from these nominated bulls at a discounted price. This not only encourages junior breeders to improve their herds through A.I.,

Beefmaster Breeders United - The Banner - 15

but it also makes it more financially feasible for junior breeders to purchase high quality semen at a discounted rate. And if that’s not enough to get your attention, each year many graduating seniors are able to apply and receive scholarships to help them begin their college careers. JBBA is in fact one of the most inviting and family friendly environments I have ever been involved with. I have grown up in this great association and I am truly able to say that it is like having a second family, a very big one at that. With hopes of improving and advancing a wonderful association, our breed has to show progression and promise. It is through avenues such as the A.I. program, ultrasound and the Beefmaster advancer/E6 programs that we can get out there and contend with other breeds. When breeders work together, like the ones in our association, greatness is destined to be achieved. Through hard work, diligence, patience and trust this breed will continue to grow and excel.

I am grateful to have been given the opportunity to serve on the JBBA Board of Directors and I am even more appreciative for what this association has done for me. It is my hope that every kid who is involved with JBBA has the same experience as me and gains unimaginable knowledge and life skills. Like the saying goes, “you get back what you put in” and it is my firm belief that when you give a little to JBBA, you will get a lot in return. Whether it is knowledge, experience, life-long connections or all of the above; JBBA can do something for you. I hope everyone has a prosperous New Year and I look forward to seeing you at the 2017 JBBA National Show and Convention in Wichita Falls! content of feed should be between 12-15% and fat content between 2-5%. Calves are just like us, they prefer fresh groceries! 7. You have to work with your animals constantly. The more exposure animals have to different stimuli, the less stress show situations will cause them. A calm animal is much less likely to injure you or themselves. 8. Good quality hay can make a huge difference in your animal’s consumption and growth. Make sure your hay is fresh! You don’t want moldy hay or hay that has a lot of weeds and sticker burrs in it. A good forage source helps maintain optimum function of the rumen, which can help ensure your animal stays on feed! 9. Probiotics and prebiotics can make a huge difference in overall animal health and performance. The rumen is full of bacteria and protozoa, these types of supplements feed them and help them multiply. Prebiotics and probiotics can be provided in the feed, through top dressing or through oral drench. The gut controls over 70

percent of the immune system, so keeping it healthy is a big deal! 10. Beet pulp can be a great addition to your feed if you need to fill calves out. It will also aid in maximum water consumption if it is fed wet. Beet pulp can also have a cooling effect for the animals. While there is no substitute for natural rib shape, beet pulp or other filler type feeds can give the look of that “big middle” that is so successful in the show ring. No matter where you go this show season, I wish you the absolute best of luck! Hold your head high and be proud of how hard you have worked. Vaccines: Are they REALLY that impor tant?

W

By Dr. Clint Shireman and Dr. Aaron Slater

ith the marketing of show calves in the south and calving in the north, it is critical to start your show stock off right. Second only to adequate colostrum intake shortly after birth, an appropriate vaccination program is necessary to ensure optimal health of your animals. In this article, we will discuss core vaccination strategies for calves that will keep them protected during the upcoming show season. Respiratory Diseases: Infectious Bovine Rhinotracheitis (IBR) – also known as Red-Nose. IBR is caused by bovine herpesvirus type-1. It is highly contagious and spread through direct contact with secretions of infected calves. Clinical signs can include fever, salivation, difficulty breathing, rhinitis (red nose), red, watery eyes and nasal discharge.

Steer showing classical “Red Nose” appearance of IBR

Bovine Virus Diarrhea (BVD) – caused by bovine viral diarrhea virus. BVD can affect calves in utero by transmission from dam to offspring, as calves, or later in life by direct transmission from infected cows or environment. Clinical signs can present as fever, lethargy, loss of appetite, ocular and nasal discharge, oral lesions and diarrhea.

diseases can be primary causes of pneumonia, but they can also compromise the calf ’s immune system and predispose them to secondary bacterial infections.

Parainfluenza – 3 (PI3) – caused by parainfluenza virus type 3. PI3 infects the upper respiratory tract and is spread by aerosol transmission or direct contact with infected calves. Clinical signs include cough, fever, nasal or ocular discharge, increased respiratory rate and difficulty breathing. Bovine Respiratory Syncytial Virus (BRSV) – BRSV infects the lower respiratory tract and is spread by aerosol transmission or direct contact with infected calves. Clinical signs can present in a range from mild to severe. Typically, fever, increased respiratory rate, sporadic coughing and nasal discharge are seen. Viral causes of respiratory

Clostridial Diseases Clostridium chauvoei – also known as Blackleg. C. chauvoei, if ingested, can be absorbed through the wall of the gastrointestinal tract and gain access to the bloodstream. Once in the bloodstream, the bacteria can be deposited in muscle. Typically, a trauma or injury resulting in muscle bruising creates an anaerobic environment where the bacteria proliferate. Clinical signs of Blackleg can include fever, acute, severe lameness or stiffness, edematous or crepitus (feeling of air under skin and in muscles – like that of bubble wrap) in heavily muscled areas such as

the shoulders, legs, back, and neck, Later in the progression, tremors and the presence of being unable to rise is common. Once crepitus is felt, death usually occurs in 12-48 hours.

Gross muscle specimen with Clostridium chauvoei: notice the dark areas of muscle necrosis

Clostridium perfringens (Type C & D) – also known as overeating disease. Type C is commonly associated with milk consumption and Type D is associated with grain or lush forage intake. Clostridium perfringens is found naturally in soil and is a normal inhabitant

of the ruminant gastrointestinal (GI) tract. When calves consume excess amounts of milk, grain, or high energy forage, the surplus amounts of starches and sugars are not digested by the upper GI tract and pass into the intestines. Here, these sugars support excessive bacterial growth of C. perfringens, which in turn, results in toxins produced by the bacteria and absorbed by the intestines. These toxins result in an enterotoxemia, an intestinal toxin in the bloodstream, which can result in death. Clostridium tetani – Tetanus is caused by a neurotoxin produced by C. tetani, which is found normally in the soil. C. tetani gains access to the animal through breaks in the skin such as wounds or during castrating or dehorning. In a calf infected with tetanus, the neurotoxin produced in necrotic tissue causes the voluntary muscles of the body to contract resulting in generalized stiffness of the body, or sawhorse stance. This neurotoxin can also affect the diaphragm and result in respiratory failure, followed by death.

Other Clostridial diseases worth mention include: Clostridium novyi which causes Black disease, Clostridium septicum which causes Malignant Edema, and Clostridium sordellii which causes Malignant Edema. The triangle represents proper injection site and the red marks represent the areas that should be avoided when giving any injection.

Tips for Proper Vaccination While vaccinating, it is very important to incorporate proper technique. Following the directions of your chosen vaccine can prevent injection site swelling. Be aware that the clostridial vaccines need to be given subcutaneously (SQ), or under the skin, while the respiratory vaccines can be given SQ or in the muscle. As some intramuscular injections of vaccines can cause severe muscle damage, areas of the rump should be avoided when giving injections to prevent the damage of beef product. Injections should be given in the neck to follow Beef Quality Assurance guidelines.

Properly labeling syringes to prevent mixing of vaccines is an excellent practice to follow. Using the correct needle size is also a great practice to follow. For SQ injections, a 18- or 16-guage needle ½ to ¾ inch long is an excellent choice. Using a longer needle - 1 inch to 1 ½ inches - is ideal for IM injections. A sharp needle should be used to prevent further stress or unwanted tissue damage. Needles should be changed after five injections. Vaccines should be stored and handled with care to ensure effectiveness. Even the best vaccination programs can fail if vaccines are not stored or handled properly. Vaccines should never be frozen or stored in direct sunlight. Some modified live vaccines need

Beefmaster Breeders United - The Banner - 39

to be reconstituted with the sterile vial that is included. Reconstituted vaccines are short lived and only enough should be reconstituted to be used within 30-45 minutes after being mixed. Read the vaccination label carefully to identify if your chosen vaccination needs to be reconstituted or refrigerated. When establishing a vaccination protocol, the time at which the first round of vaccines is given is important. With colostral immunity decreasing around 56 months of age, it is necessary to vaccinate before colostral immunity resolves. Therefore, with the average weaning age being 6 months, it is advised that the first round of vaccines be given at 2-3 weeks before weaning followed by a booster at weaning, as the chart shows below. This chart can be used as basic model to incorporate within your herd.

Finally, to ensure that vaccines are working to their full potential, cattle must be provided a well-balanced nutritional program which is a crucial component to any operation. Providing the proper amount of energy, protein, and essential minerals is necessary to ensure that your animal’s immune system responds to the vaccines given. In conclusion, by establishing a vaccination protocol, with the assistance of your veterinarian, you can insure the health and well-being of your show stock and help them reach their full potential. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, so establishing a vaccination program early that is easy to follow will benefit the animal and the showman alike. § Connect with us at

Eight “Unofficial” Steps to Halter Breaking

M

any aspects are involved in preparing for the show. However, none are probably more important than halter breaking your calf. Since the process can seem a daunting task to the inexperienced cattle exhibitor, I’ve taken it upon myself to compile an easy to follow, step-by-step guide for all the aspiring cattle exhibitors out there. So kids, put on your learning caps, sit back, and let me teach you how to halter break a calf the Dickens way. Step One: Weaning the Calf While it may sound simple on paper weaning a calf can be terrifically difficult in application. Cows are notoriously protective of their young, and much like most mothers in the animal kingdom, they do not look kindly on people stealing their babies. (Author’s note: I say “most mothers” because during some of the crazier moments of my childhood Mom would’ve sold my brothers and me for some

By Chase Dickens loose change and an expired coupon to Red Lobster. I know, she wrote it on all my birthday cards.) There are many ways to separate a cow and calf, but the Dickens’ favorite time-tested method is to convince one of your brothers to distract the murderous, hatefilled cow while you herd the calf into a separate pen. This method has the added bonus of exciting hilarity while simultaneously giving your siblings some nice exercise as they run and scream. And screaming is great for the lungs, you know. Step Two: Halter and Lead Rope Now it’s time to strap the halter and lead rope onto the calf. The first thing you’ll have to do is get the calf into a head chute. Calves, being the stupidest creatures in the world behind sheep and politicians, will make this process all the more difficult by running head first into every fence because they haven’t learned how solid objects work.

44 - The Banner - Beefmaster Breeders United

Once the calf is safely in the head chute, you simply strap on the halter and attach the lead rope. Be sure that your lead rope is long enough to drag several feet behind the calf. The reason for the extra rope is threefold: Firstly, the extra rope will make it easier for you to catch the calf without the threat of being kicked in the mouth. Secondly, the calf will step on the rope as it walks around the pen and will slowly grow accustomed to stopping when the rope is pulled. And thirdly, as the calf drags and steps on the rope, it will eventually become completely caked with mud and manure. This may seem like a negative aspect, but if your child is the one doing the halter breaking, the extra slippery rope will be an excellent character building exercise when the rope slips through their tiny hands and they fall face first into manure. Some of my fondest childhood memories are of my father laughing from the fence while I ingested unhealthy amounts of fecal matter. Step Three: Leading the Calf After giving the calf several days

to grow accustomed to the halter and rope, it’s now time to train the calf to lead. While some folks may tie the calf to a vehicle and drag it until it leads, I always felt (And by “I” I mean my father) that the use of a vehicle really takes away from the hands on experience for both you and the animal. If the calf is for a child, I suggest forcing the child to catch the calf and lead it by the (manure covered) rope. This allows the child and calf to become more acquainted with one another. Also if the calf drags the child, his or her lightweight body will glide smoothly across the top of the mud and manure, thus avoiding any annoying ruts in the mud. But be sure to warn the child to never let go of the rope. The calf may learn that it can get away. Also my father always said, “Real men never let go.” Even if that “real man” happened to be an eight year old boy. Step Four: Tying the Calf Now that you’ve ingested enough manure to be considered a methane bomb, it’s time to get up and tie your calf to the fence. Be sure to tie its head high and close to the fence. Once

Beefmaster Breeders United - The Banner - 45

that’s finished locate a brush and gently stroke the calf ’s side. You should be able to get a few brush strokes in before the calf inevitably goes crazy and stomps or kicks you. Step Five: Crying Behind the Barn When you’ve been kicked or stomped, you must show no weakness. Calves are evil creatures that feed on the tears and sorrow of young children. So, it’s important to do all your crying behind the barn and out of sight. This also applies to brothers and fathers because they too are evil creatures that feed on the tears and sorrow of young children. And they will probably laugh at you too. Step Six: The “Sniper” Brush Once you’ve dried your eyes and told yourself many times that you are still a “real man” regardless of what everyone says, you still have to brush the calf. I suggest finding a long stick and tying the brush to the end. Use your new long distance brush or “Sniper Brush” (Patent pending) until the calf calms down enough to brush by hand.

Step Seven: Rinse and Repeat Once you’ve successfully completed the first six steps, all you have to do is repeat them day after day for a few weeks, and you’ll be the proud owner of a completely halter broken calf in no time. Step Eight: Saying the Heck with It (Optional) Sometime all your hard work can be for nothing. A person can only take some much ingesting of manure, kicking, and crying behind barns before he says the heck with it. If this is the case you simply load the calf onto a trailer (along with any other calves and valuable things you find laying around the farm), wave goodbye to the farm life, sell everything, and move away to sunny Puerto Rico. I’ll save you a beach chair. §
