Another Note From The Desk of the Pro

Spring is here. Time for golf. It is great to see everyone starting to get out. Our season opening event, the Easy Location / Hard Location Scramble, was played on April 4th. Over 80 players participated with some seriously fantastic scores both net and gross. The format allowed for a shot to be deducted if a ball was holed out in the hard location. With a gross score of 47, the team of Chris Botto, Jerry Burton, Julien Nadeau, and Ugo Solomon took home 1st place. The team of Brad Ferguson, Coby Massie, Vincent Nadeau, and Kevin Paddy won net with a score of 45. A little different twist to this year’s event was Food and Beverage stations on the course. Dean and his staff did a tremendous job with different food options at three different locations during the round to enjoy a meal. Kudos to David Callahan, Nate Williamson, and the rest of our greens crew for all of their hard work. As always, the course conditions and setup for the event were fantastic. In case you weren’t a member a few years ago, I would like to introduce (or reintroduce) Pete Mazza, PGA back to our team. Pete was an assistant pro here from 2010 – 2012. After a three year stint at Golf Galaxy in Richmond, where he was the teaching pro, I want to welcome Pete back to our team. Pete is a very qualified instructor and fitter. He is also going to be teaming up with Rob Schultz, PGA to run our PGA Junior League team, teach junior camps, ladies clinics, and individual lessons as well. As a reminder, our calendar of member events and social activities can be found on our Spring Creek website. A few upcoming: Live music on the patio every Friday night beginning April 10th, Ladies clinic on April 12th, Seniors of Spring Creek Season Opener (aka “Beat the Pros”) on April 16th, One Day Member Guest on April 18th, and Twilight Golf on May 1st. Also, we will be closed April 20th through the 24th for Spring Aerification. One last thing of note. In the past we had been shutting down the driving range on Mondays at 4 pm to do a clean pick so we could do maintenance on Tuesday mornings. This year we are changing this day to Tuesdays. The range will be open one hour before our first tee time and close one hour before dark every day except Tuesday when we will be closing the range at 4 pm. As always, if there is anything we can do to assist you in the enjoyment of this great game, whether it be lessons, new equipment, club fitting, rules, or just advice, please do not hesitate to ask. We are here for you. See you on the fairways soon,

Kevin Haney, PGA

Reclaiming Natural Resources on the Course by Brian Vincel, CGCS General Manager

As many of you may know, water availability has become a growing concern throughout the United States and Louisa County is no exception. Zion Crossroads has become a major point of development for the county and it continues to grow with each year that passes. With this growth, concerns for providing adequate water to end users have required a great deal of resources from the County to provide the necessary infrastructure. Louisa County has invested in miles of piping to provide us with water but they were also required to upgrade their Waste Water treatment facility to handle the additional volume. Spring Creek does not use water from the county for the distribution of irrigation around the course but we too have found our storage impoundments inadequate at times. 120 acres of turf requires a great deal of water to thrive in our Mid-Atlantic climate. The golf course can use up to 40 million gallons annually and during our drier summers this can significantly reduce the water in our lake. 4

In an attempt to protect our course, conserve our natural resource, and do our part as responsible steward of the land, Spring Creek is embarking on a joint venture with Louisa County to introduce reclaimed water as an additional source for irrigation. At the current rate, the treatment facility, located behind the 15th hole, discharges around 100,000 gallons a day. The upgrades in the plant have enabled the county to treat the water to nearly drinking water quality upon its departure. We intend to utilize this reclaimed water source to supplement our current irrigation system. Currently Faulkner Construction, led by members Rob Hatler and Fran Burke, is building a 2 million gallon reservoir and installing the necessary pumping infrastructure to facilitate this reuse system. Some areas that you may see impacts with installation will be behind the 15th green and repairs to a transfer pipe on the 14th fairway. Our goal will be to finish our portion of the project before the end of May in hopes of introducing reclaimed water sometime this summer. This project, although not as exciting as our recent Clubhouse addition, is a vital capital investment for our club to ensure we have an adequate irrigation supply for years to come. Thanks for everyone’s continued support and I look forward to another wonderful golf season her at Spring Creek. 5

“Super excited to be back at Spring Creek— looking forward to the 2015 year!”

What is your teaching philosophy? I believe that everyone has a unique swing and his or her own approach to learning. My role is to understand your style and provide the best communication in order to maximize your learning potential. Together, based on your goals, motivations, and abilities, we will create an individualized road map to your success. Improving in golf takes practice, persistence, and patience. There are no “quick” fixes which will translate in to lasting improvement. Even PGA Tour players have coaches. None of us can do it alone. For most people, the fastest way to lower scores is improved putting, chipping, pitching, green side bunker shots. Playing better golf is not just about beating balls on the range. Smart practice is not the same as a lot of practice.

Spring Season Brings New Cuisine–Even on the Go by Dean Stock, Director of Restaurant Operations Tavern on the Green is steadily gaining momentum as our staff eagerly prepares for the upcoming season full of fun filled activities. If you haven’t heard about our Friday night “Party on the Patio” it’s a weekly event you wouldn’t want to miss. Each week we’ll be hosting live music on the terrace with drink specials and our Prime Rib dinner for all to enjoy. In addition to this Friday night extravaganza, Executive Chef Greg Brannock is preparing an exciting new menu filled with new savory entrées for even the most refined palate. This winter our take out service reached such popular levels that we have begun a delivery service for all those within the community. Currently we have pizza and wings that can be delivered to your front door for those nights when preparing and post meal cleanup is more than time permits. As always we value your opinion so if we can ever improve your experience here at the club, please don’t hesitate to ask. Thank you to all that have become loyal patrons of the Tavern on the Green and if you just haven’t yet experienced the restaurant we look forward to serving you soon.

Lush Greens Mean a Busy Spring by David Callahan, Golf Course Superintendent It’s that time of year again, time to dust off the mowers and get the watering hoses back in the carts, spring has arrived. The maintenance team has been busy over the winter months repairing drainage basins and adding drainage to some of the wet areas in our fairways. These practices will not only improve the playability of the surface but will also make it easier for our mowers to traverse over the drains without harming the surrounding turf. Several significant irrigation repairs were also made while the system was drained. Most significant was the repair to the line under the bridge going from #13 to #14, and a mainline feed under the cart path by the bridge on nine. Some cultural practices have already occurred and several more are on the horizon. This winter, Spring Creek was able to acquire a disk seeder which we quickly converted into a sand injector. You will see its handy work on all of the approaches on the golf course. This machine creates a furrow through the canopy of the turf and injects dry sand into that furrow; this will create an area for water to penetrate into the soil more quickly resulting in firmer and smoother approach areas around the green. The process is labor intensive but with some practice the crew has become proficient with the process. It is our intention to continue this process in the fall as this is a process that will need to be repeated several times to achieve the desired results. Several members and guests have approached me in the past few weeks to ask about the dark lines on our putting greens. This is nothing to be 10

overly concerned about and is only a temporary eyesore that is a result of the deep tinning on the greens. Anytime you punch a hole through the surface of a green there is some level of softening on the surface and as the tractor moves across the green the tires leave shallow ruts. These ruts are rolled out and after a few days they are visible but have no effect on ball roll. As I write this we are several good working days away from wrapping up the deep tinning on fairways and finishing aerification on the rough. This will set us up nicely to begin Fairway verti-cutting and the all-important spring aeration on greens and tees the week of April 20th. From the entire maintenance staff here at Spring Creek we would like to thank all of you for your continued support of our club and we look forward to seeing everyone out on the course this spring.
