Dear friends

A very big thank you to everyone who has welcomed Bees for Development and our continued production of this journal. We are encouraged by the positive responses we have received and are grateful to everyone who has written or called to offer support.

Although the new organisation Bees for Development is only few months old, we have already received number of requests for information on royal jelly. To be honest, we have in the past tended to avoid the subject of royal jelly in this journal. The reason is because royal jelly is by no means easy to produce in marketable quantities, is not simple to store, must be very carefully packaged, and the market for royal jelly is complex: in recent years there have been dramatic rises and falls in price. However, very many people have heard of royal jelly and that it can be a lucrative commodity, and few publications give information on how to harvest it.

Therefore, in response to your requests, on pages three to five we provide information on royal jelly.

It cannot be denied that whatever the reason, beekeepers do seem to enjoy long and healthy lives! in this edition we send congratulations to Brother Adam: celebrations have recently been held to mark his 95th birthday. We also hear of the great celebrations held in Brazil to mark Professor Kerr's 70th birthday. We are very honoured to feature an interview with him: read his message to world beekeepers on page seven.
