This book provides a concise and clear explanation of the preparation of traditional European skep hives. Skeps are usually constructed from straw and cane, but it is possible to use other materials.

In Chapter One of his new book Dr Caron asks “why study honeybees”?. He explains that they are a convenient and interesting social animal to study, and makes comparisons between the human and the bee world. Out of 21 chapters the first eleven concentrate on honeybee biology followed by ten on beekeepers’ management of honeybees. Subjects include: what is a honeybee (it’s history and genetics), anatomy, communication, foraging, the basics of management, hive products and pollination. The beekeeping described is predominately that practised in North America using Apis mellifera honeybees of European origin.
