The miracle of flight

Stephen Dalton. 2001. 184 pages. Hardback. Published by Merrell Publishers Ltd Available from Bees for Development. Price £25. Order code DLO5

Before an insect can take to its wings, its body temperature must be sufficiently high: usually flight muscles have to be at least 24°C.

Yet bumblebees fly at temperatures near to freezing by generating metabolic heat before take-off. This is achieved by uncoupling the flight muscles from the wings and vibrating and wake up without moving the wings at all.

This book is full of similar fascinating information explaining how animals (beginning with insects) evolved wings and how humans too have now been able to follow them into the air.

Stephen Dalton’s art of high-speed photography has been the key to unlocking many secrets of insect, bird and bat flight. His astonishing pictures fill this amazing book.
