Album review Even the members of Blitz Kids ad-

mit that it took some time to find their feet. After two albums and two EP’s of ‘negative’ and ‘impersonal’ lyrics, they have finally found their new sound. January 2014 saw the release of their third album ‘The Good Youth’ and it is certainly not to be pushed I rarely get as excited about an album pre-release as I did with The Imperial Skies. After seeing Chapters live twice and hearing some stuff on

The album consists of nine fastpaced songs and three slower songs, written not only by the singer, Joe, but ‘Title Fight’ is written by guitarist, Jono, and ‘Run For Cover’ is written by bassist, Nic. The track ‘All I Want Is Everything’ is a great opener to the album and a promising start. The album continues to improve as it goes on with loud, upbeat songs that make you want to shout along to the lyrics, leading to track five ‘Keep Swinging’; a slower, uplifting song. 5

Then, the heaviest song kicks in with ‘Sold My Soul’, the darkest one out of them all, and it seems like a throwback to their older sound. ‘Perfect’ is a stand out song to me as I find it the catchiest and I find it really strengthens the album. ‘The Good Youth’ reaches the slowest point with ‘Pinnacle’ and whilst not energetic, I still find it a likeable song and I love the change that it is from the others. Lastly is ‘The Sound of a Lost Generation’ which contains the lyric ‘here’s to our future’ - an excellent way to end the album with optimism, and it can relate to the bands own journey. The album is a dramatic improvement from their former efforts and is full of catchy lyrics and memorable choruses. After some soul-searching and persistent determination, Blitz Kids can finally voice what they have been meaning to and be truly proud of their work. Though there is still a long road to the top yet, I believe they are well on their way. Rating: 4/5 Written by Lauren Hill

Education Education Education and War album review Kaiser Chiefs first album since de-

parture of long term drummer Nick Hodgson could have went one of two ways. Luckily for lead singer Ricky Wilson and co it went the better way. The album, which went straight to number 1 in the charts, starts off with a very loud statement using the song "The Factory Gates" and that message is that we are back. With a big intro sometimes it can lead into a bit of a lull.

‘...went straight to

With there fifth studio album the contrast in songs in fantastic, crowd number 1 in the pleasers like "coming home" "rufficharts’ ans on parade" and "misery company" are all going to get the live crowd The Kaisers Chiefs are still no band for there upcoming tour rocking. to be sniffed at and can still make a To the slower songs on the album top album after 14 years in the mulike "cannons". sic industry. it is a great effort from the lads from Rating: 4/5 Leeds who proved that while bands like Arctic Monkeys, Kasabian and Written by Stephen Tannock Biffy Clyro are considered the big bands in Britain right now.

Every now and then, a band comes along that

seem to have the very essence of their nation imbued in their sound. With Mother’s Ruin, Max Raptor show off their ability to write hard-hitting, melodic punk anthems with a powerfully ‘English’ grit. 11

Right from the off, you can tell there’s something inherently honest and ‘real’ about this album, ‘Back of A Barrel Wave’ has one of the most unexpectedly catchy choruses I’ve heard in a long time and some interesting experimental-esque vocal work in the middle section. ‘Taming of The Shrewd’ is another banger, and definitely contender for track of the album. What’s amazing listening to the album, is that the songs are quite simply just superb from start to finish, and pretty much any of them could be a single. The chosen single however, is ‘England Breathes’, an anthemic romp through the mind of vocalist Wil Ray that is sure to have people singing along at every show.

Max Raptor have done exactly what all great bands do: written an album that defines their unique sound and yet every song has its own character and a different feel. ‘Heavy Hearts’ is the first real ‘ballad’ I‘ve heard from the band and is a real triumph, the way some of the vocal lines fall around the instrumental is sublime. For me, this is one of the year’s strongest releases, no real weak tracks and an attention to detail that I really love to see, you can tell, especially vocally, that every part has been thought about and placed for maximum effect. Expect big things from these lads in the future. Rating: 4/5 Written by Brady Deeprose

EVERBLACK BY THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER ALBUM REVIEW ...band’s name, the Black Dahlia murder. Fast, bloodthirsty, melodic. It sets the precedent for 45 minutes of the best melodic death metal I’ve heard in a good few years. Lead single ‘Goat Of Departure’ follows the opener in that it’s straight into the action, no-messing death metal.

When a death metal band

writes something as good as 2011’s Ritual, they’re on top of the world. After touring relentlessly, The Black Dahlia Murder then sat down to write the follow up. ‘Holy shit, how do we follow a masterpiece?’ must have been a phrase thrown around, even Trevor Strnad (Vocals) said that following Ritual was ‘a daunting prospect’ and that is had been ‘the biggest and most well thought out thing’ they had put their names too. With the release of Everblack, they’ve done a bloody good job. ‘In Hell Is Where She Waits For Me’ is the huge intro we all wanted to hear, and for the first time sees the lyrics tackling the theme of the...

The ferocity of TBDM is magnificent, a true testament to the dual guitar prowess of Ryan Knight and Brian Eschbach. The bands melodic playing could have peaked with Ritual leaving a follow-up sounding drab in comparison, yet Everblack, as the title would suggest, has come out sounding darker than ever. The soulful (soulless?) guitar solo in ‘Into The Everblack’ just goes to further prove my point: spine-tinglingly eerie yet stunningly cutting.

‘Raped In Hatred By Vines of Thorn’, as some of the horror fans amongst you may have realised, is a tip of the hat to the infamous Evil Dead scene, tackling the unsavoury subject matter in vivid depth. A wordsmith of sorts, Trevor Strnad has a talent for getting stark, filthy imagery flashing before your eyes using an almost poetic syntax, for example, ‘...

Ritual in secrecy in opened flesh they do confide, beneath their clothing hides a map of scars freakishly carved, between their puckered lips a waiting lie, hollow inside.’ As quite a clearly outspoken fan of 2011’s Ritual, it was always going to be a hard act to follow, but Everblack is as close to that quality as any band could get. It’s a real treat for old and new fans alike and, considering pre-orders actually came with an evidence bag (mine had a shotgun shell and some crime scene pictures), The Black Dahlia Murder are a band that are sure to delight and surprise for years to come.
