NOVEMBER09 NOVEMBER PALM SPRINGS PRIDE

WHITE PARTY WEEK

Tucked away at the foot of the San Jacinto Mountains in sunny Southern California, Palm Springs is one of the most successful and well-known gay resort towns in the USA. Blessed with a sublime desert climate the town is home to dozens of gay resorts, complexes and guesthouses and welcomes thousands of tourists each year who escape to this desert oasis. Palm Springs is also home to a very large, diverse and hands on resident LGBT community, which is now estimated to make up a staggering 40% of the population. It’s no surprise then that the town pulls out all the stops and puts on a fantastic Pride celebration which sees locals and visitors alike come out in force to celebrate. The event kicks off Palm Springs high season with a bang setting the tone for yet another sunny winter in America’s gayest playground. As well as a very colourful and extravagant parade itself the town also hosts the Pride Festival with a cornucopia of live entertainment and community related activities for everyone to enjoy.

Miami’s legendary White Party is the oldest and certainly the most glamorous HIV and AIDS fund raising event in North America. 2009 will see this landmark event celebrate its 25th anniversary, which has now grown to span a whole week of events and celebrations. Parties will be taking place in venues all over the city including the best nightclubs and also a spectacular open air party on Ocean View Drive complete with fireworks finale. The jewel in the impressive crown off the white party week though is the lavish event held annually at the beautiful Vizcaya Villa. This impressive former private residence recreates Italy of the sixteenth century, complete with stunning gardens on the banks of Miami’s Biscayne Bay. Lucky partygoers can expect some heavyweight celebrity performances and the US’s top Djs spinning the tunes. The grounds will also feature a huge casino and the food court where mouth watering dishes and drinks will be available from Miami’s top restaurants and bars. www.whiteparty.net

BUENOS AIRES PRIDE

Buenos Aires, Argentina. 7 Nov 2009.

Buenos Aires is one of the fastest growing queer holiday destinations in the world with an incredible 20% of visitors to the city estimated to be gay or lesbian. These trailblazing travellers have been quick to discover the charms of South America’s third largest city, which are many, and varied, Buenos Aires certainly deserves its title of the Paris of South America. This is the most European of all cities in the South America and was founded by the first Spanish and Italian settlers to the continent. The city still bears witness to its European heritage in the grand architecture, excellent cuisine and refined culture but has also firmly established its own very considerable and very Argentinean personality bursting with flair. November makes the perfect time to visit this colourful city and 2009 will see the 17th successive gay pride event take place in the city. This is Argentina’s largest pride parade and still carries an important political message in this Catholic country. Visitors should note that the parade is the only event that takes place for BA pride but as a gay Mecca the event draws visitors from all over the country. www.marchadelorgullo.org.ar

Fireworks

Alexandra Palace, London, UK. 7 Nov 2009 The yearly fireworks display at Alexandra Palace has become one of the largest in the capital celebrating Guy Fawkes failed attempt to blow up the houses of parliament in 1605. The event has now established itself as one of the most popular Bonfire Night’s events in London and attracts thousands of people for a huge and unforgettable pyrotechnic display that comes with complimentary views off central London to boot. Situated in North London Alexandra Palace was built in 1873 as a public entertainment centre as the counterpart to South London’s Crystal Palace. This people’s palace is still home to a large number of entertainment facilities and attractions and hosts numerous conferences and concerts every year. The Palace is also known affectionately as Ally Pally, a nickname that was allegedly bestowed upon the venue by Gracie Fields. www.alexandrapalace.com

Classical Spectacular

Celebration of Freedom

Classical Spectacular, Royal Albert Hall, London, UK. 19-22 November 2009. The Classical Spectacular is far more than just a series of classical music performances and sees the Royal Albert Hall transformed for this yearly musical extravaganza. The event is billed as the greatest classical music show in the UK but certainly lives up to the hype as these are certainly no normal classical music concerts. London’s most emblematic music venue will host up to 250 performers and musicians who will fill the hall with the most famous and time honoured classical pieces of all time and performances of brand new pieces too. As well as some stunning music though there is also an accompaniment of thundering cannons, indoor fireworks and a laser show too. This year’s Classical Spectacular features classics such as Blue Danube Waltz, La Donna e Mobile from Rigoletto, Nessun Dorma, Rule Britannia, Jerusalem, Land of Hope and Glory and the famous 1812 Overture.

It might be hard to believe but 2009 is the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, which marked the end of the cold war and the division of Europe. Germany’s capital city is celebrating this momentous occasion in grand style with a whole series of events and exhibitions planned in the city throughout the year. Three major events will form the main focus of this year-long event: The open-air exhibition ‘Peaceful Revolution’ on the events of 1989/90 taking place in Alexanderplatz, the exhibition ‘Perspectives – 20 Years of a Changing Berlin’, which will highlight the developments in Berlin since 1989 and, on 9 November 2009 the eyes of the whole world will be on Berlin and the spectacular ‘Festival of Freedom’. Celebrations and entertainment have been planned for both sides of the Brandenburg Gate as well as symbolic artistic works that will depict the fall of the wall. Prominent artistic personalities, politicians and cultural figures are all set to attend one of the biggest events to take place in Germany in 2009.

Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade New York, USA. 26 Nov 2009.

The annual Macy’s parade has been taking place in Manhattan for over 80 years and is one of the largest, colourful and most popular events to take place in the city. The parade was first started in 1924 featuring animals from the New York Zoo and was such a huge success that it was decided to make it an annual event. Now though, the focus of the parade are the huge helium filled characters which are pulled on mass through the city’s streets accompanied by floats, marching bands, clowns, and a whole raft of top notch entertainers and celebrities who get invited to headline the event. Over 3 million people line the streets to watch the colourful and lively parade and over 44 million tune in on national television too. This year the parade is taking a new route through the city, instead of coming down Broadway the parade route will start on Central Park South and travel down to Times Square on nearby 7th Avenue. www.macys.com

GRAND WINE TASTING Carrousel du Louvre, Paris. 4-5 Dec 2009

Paris’ Grand Wine tasting was conceived as a festival of wine that brings together France’s greatest wine makers to celebrate all things divine about wine. All of France’s regions are represented at the event, from some of the oldest and well respected names in the world to up and coming new producers and vineyards. As well as being able to meet the producers in person there are a number of classes and activities that attendees can also participate in. Master classes led by experts offer tastings of various wines in a 100 seat theatre where wines will be tasted and discussed over a 45 minute period. In addition during the gourmet classes the focus will be on which food will be the best accompaniment for each of the wines featured. Spaces for the classes are limited which can be booked directly on the Grand Tasting website. www.grandtasting.com

No Christmas would be complete without Tchaikovsky’s seasonal favourite which is performed annually at London’s stunning Opera House in Covent Garden. This wonderful celebration of all things Christmas sees The Royal Ballet once again revive Peter Wright’s acclaimed production and features a rolling roll call of principals as the Nutcracker Prince and Sugar Plum Fairy. During a Christmas party, friendly toy maker Drosselmyer hands out his toys to all of the local children. Young Clara is given a toy soldier, Nutcracker which she falls asleep with under the Christmas tree. As midnight strikes designer Julia Trevelyan Oman’s magical tree starts to grow and grow. Soaring to the skies, and topped off with a shimmering shower of golden stardust, it conjures up the perfect Christmas. In Clara’s dream the Nutcracker comes alive and battles with the Mouse King’s army. Turning into a handsome prince, he whisks Clara off to the kingdom of sweets to be entertained by some of the most popular dances ever staged, including his famous pas de deux with the sugar plum fairy. HOLLY FOLLY

Provincetown, Massachusetts, USA. 5-7 Dec 2009.

Christmas comes early every year to New England’s gayest seaside town situated at the tip of Cape Cod on America’s beautiful Atlantic coastline. Every year the resort, which is best known for its summer frivolities camps it up in spectacular fashion in preparation for the start of the winter season and if there’s one thing that’s camper than Christmas it would surely have to be Provincetown’s gay Christmas festival. As well as the opportunity to scour P’town’s unique and individual boutiques, shops and art galleries visitors to Holly Folly can also expect plenty of seasonal treats which are in plentiful supply. Music is high on the agenda with performances from local choirs and groups including the Boston’s gay men’s chorus. More informal sing alongs around the piano with a glass of mulled wine fireside will also be popping up in schedule and there’s sure to be plenty of impromptu performances throughout this long weekend of yuletide fun. www.hollyfolly.com

MCQP PARTY

Cape Town, South Africa Party. 19 Dec2009. Cape Town’s Mother City Queer Projects has been putting on parties and events in South Africa for 15 years, which have now become something of an institution. Their annual costume party, which takes place in the city each December, is the highlight of the queer calendar in Africa’s undisputed gay capital. This themed carnival style event draws the great and the good from all over South Africa for the most outlandish celebration of the year in the Rainbow Nation. Partygoers are encouraged to come in teams and dress in their own interpretations of that year’s topic with predictably outrageous results. This year the theme is ‘Tool Box’, so think sexed up scantily clad scaffolders and butch bisexual builders and don’t be surprised if someone attempts to counter sink their screws into you against the stud wall, you get the drift (we hope), anything could, and probably will happen. The venue for the event is Cape Town’s high school, which is transformed each year by an army of enthusiastic volunteers who decorate with gay abandon for this annual African jamboree.

The Dufay Collective Medieval Christmas Banqueting House, London. 7 Dec 2009.

One of London’s most beautiful venues throws open its doors on Monday 7 December for a preChristmas buffet lunch followed by a music recital. This great building’s fascinating medieval history inspires the music for and afternoon of recitals from the middle ages. Originally built for the Arch Bishop of York the building was appropriated by Henry VIII who was in need for a palace in Whitehall at the time. Later kings fared less well here though, Charles I was executed for treason outside of the building which drew huge crowds who came to see the king lose his head. The lunch and recital will be held in the main hall of Banqueting House itself, which is all that remains of this once great palace. Luckily the beautifully painted ceiling, which was painted by the Flemish master Rubens also survives and is the only ceiling by him remaining in situ in the world. www.hrp.org.uk

Handel’s Messiah

Sydney Opera House, Sydney, Australia. 10 - 13 Dec 2009 What better place could there possibly be to hear the most famous choral masterpiece in the world than in the world’s most famous opera house? As luck would have it performances of Handel’s Messiah have become so popular at Sydney’s most famous and iconic music institution that they have become part of the annual programme. Eagerly anticipated each December once again the Sydney Philharmonia Choirs will perform their annual preChristmas rendition of the famous oratorio. This stirring piece of music tells the story of Christ from the prophecies of his coming and his birth to his death and resurrection according to Christian doctrine. From the rousing Hallelujah Chorus to the quiet pronouncement of faith in I know That My Redeemer Liveth this is sure to be one of the finest and most exuberant concerts to take place at Sydney’s Opera House all year.

MIDSUMMA

Melbourne, Australia. 17 Jan-7 Feb 2010 The Midsumma festival was originally started to give Melbourne its very own event to rival that of the ever popular Sydney Mardi Gras. This being Melbourne though, the self styled art and cultural capital of Australia the focus for this new event was of course to be the arts, theatre and entertainment. Over 20 years on and Midsumma has now established itself as the premier queer arts and culture festival in Australia and features a packed and diverse programme of cultural events starting at the end of January each year. A whole spectrum of entertainment is on offer each year including community and social events, sports competitions for all levels of abilities as well as loads of queer literature, performing and visual arts. The festival is also all about fun and so there are also plenty of parties, parades and outdoor festivals. Some of the Premier events include the Pride Parade, Summer Bump Out Party and the festivals largest event which is Carnival which is held in the central Alexandra Gardens. www.midsumma.org.au

PROCESSION OF THE THREE KINGS Barcelona, Spain. 5 Jan 2010.

Barfüsserplatz, Basel

According to Hispanic tradition it is not Santa Claus who distributes presents to the children for Christmas but the Three Wise Men, who also arrive somewhat later than a certain Mr. Claus. The royal trio traditionally distribute their gifts on the eve of Epiphany, which is the evening of 5 January and the cause of much celebration in Spain. The arrival of the Magi is awaited with great anticipation in towns all over Spain and processions are organised in cities, towns and villages all over the country. Barcelona’s celebrations are some of the most lavish and unique though, the kings arrive in style by boat and are greeted by a flotilla that accompanies them back into harbour under a spectacular fireworks display. Once ashore the procession departs through the streets of Barcelona where gifts and sweets are distributed to spectators along the way. The parade ends at the fountains of Montjuic which are lit up in an impressive display for the crowds that gather below the National Palace at the end of the procession. www.spain.info

The Turner Prize Exhibition Tate Britain, London, UK. 6 Oct 09 - 16 Jan 2010.

The Turner prize was set up in 1984 to recognise the emerging talent in Britain’s modern art scene. Whether you love it or you loathe it there’s no denying that the Turner prize is always controversial and will always provide something to talk about. This exhibition is sure to deliver something innovative and surprising; whether it’s pickled beasts or artfully arranged dirty laundry you probably won’t have seen anything like this before. Anyone that hasn’t made it to Tate Britain for the show before New Year has no need to panic. The show, which feature works from all four of the nominated artist runs until the 16 January and is a great way to shake of those post New Year blues. The four artists nominated for Turner Prize 2009 are Enrico David, Roger Hiorns, Lucy Skaer and Richard Wright. The judges for the Turner Prize 2009 are Mariella Frostrup, Charles Esche, Jonathan Jones and Andrea Schlieker. www.tate.org.uk/britain/turnerprize

Snow Arena Polo World Cup Kitzbuehel, Austria. 14-17 Jan 2010.

As elite events go they don’t get much more select than polo and the annual Hypo Liechtenstein Snow Arena Polo World Cup that takes place each January in the swish ski resort of Kitzbuehel is no exception. The event attracts the super wealthy in their droves and draws the cream of the crop from the world of this select equestrian sport for some seriously upmarket horseplay. Eight of the best teams in the world are assembled for this tournament, which takes place on a snow-covered arena surrounded by the majestic Austrian mountains. The tournament itself takes place over three days of exciting competition, which anyone can watch from the side of arena. During the evenings a host of exclusive private parties are organised by the luxury brands that queue up to sponsor the event. Unlike the polo itself though, anyone without a ticket for the evening’s soirees will definitely not be allowed entry. www.kitzbuehelpolo.com

Miami Art Deco Weekend

Ocean Drive, South Beach, Miami, Florida. 15-17 Jan 2010

There’s no better time to celebrate Miami’s exquisite Art Deco architecture than during Miami’s Art Deco Weekend that takes please each year in January. The Art Deco Weekend Festival was started in 1976 by the Miami Design Preservation League to attract visitors to Miami Beach’s Art Deco Historic District and to raise awareness and appreciation of the arts and culture of the Art Deco era (approx. 1925-1945). The weekend draws an impressive 400,000 visitors to Miami each year and there are over 85 events planned over this three day event. As well as guided tours through some of Miami’s most impressive Art Deco buildings, there is also a series of lectures about the architecture of the period. Also visitors will be treated to musical and theatrical performances and films from the period are also shown during the festival. Miami’s Art Deco district lies between 5th and 15th streets on Ocean Drive in South Beach. www.artdecoweekend.com

Winter Restaurant Week New York City, USA. Jan 2010

Many of New York’s trendiest and best restaurants participate in the great tradition of the Winter Restaurant week which gives everyone the chance to enjoy the finest cuisine at a fraction of the normal price. So popular has the week been that it actually is now closer to 2 in 2010 with dates available shortly from the NYC Visit website. With so many restaurants to choose from though the variety is quite daunting so it’s a good idea to pre plan and decide where you want to eat before you arrive. Top participating restaurants include Scandinavian inspired Aquavit on Park and Madison and the classic French cuisine served at Cafe Des Artistes at One West 67th St. Fish lovers can head for the Lure Fishbar, 142 Mercer St. or for elegant Italian fair Del Posto on 85 Tenth Ave. is always a good bet. For classic American cuisine the Mesa Grill, 102 5th Avenue and the River Cafe, 1 Water Street in Brooklyn both serve up some seriously delectable treats and for steak lovers Smith & Wollensky’s is the place to head for. www.nycvisit.com/restaurantweek

Carnival In Sitges

Florianopolis Carnival

You don’t need to go all the way to South America to experience an authentic carnival experience. As luck would have it Sitges, probably the most gay friendly town in Europe also throws its own extravagant celebrations to mark the beginning of lent. This bohemian seaside resort is a popular destination for the trendy Barcelona set as well as visitors from all over Europe but its not just during the summer that this seaside town down is jumping. Up to a quarter of a million visitors flood into Sitges every February from all over Europe for a week of uninhibited revelry. Festivities commence on a different day each year according to Easter but the party always begins on the Thursday before Lent. The arrival of the King of the ‘Carnestoltes’ signals the start of the colourful proceedings that are brought to and end with the Burial of the Sardine (a large effigy) on Ash Wednesday. The town provides entertainment throughout the week but the highlight is the grand parade of 3,000 participants and 50 floats.

The city of Florianopolis sits on an island just off the south-eastern coast of Brazil and is fast gaining a reputation as one of premier gay holiday destinations in South America and a perfect antidote to the hectic pace of city life in Brazil. The city of Florianopolis, or Floripa to the locals and those in the know packs a pretty serious gay punch for a town of just 400,000 inhabitants. The city centre is home to a dozen gay venues, including a fantastic beach bar, 2 saunas and some unbelievable beaches and is also one of the safest destinations in the country too. The carnival itself is an inevitably exuberant affair and probably the best carnival to take place in the whole of southern Brazil. For four days and nights to mark the beginning of Lent the town erupts in riotous celebrations. The highlight of carnival each year is the parade of samba bands, musicians, floats and dancers which works its way through the city to the Sambadromo where thousands of people watch the parade pass through from the grand stand seating on each side.

RIO’S CARNIVAL

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. 13-16 Feb 2010. Carnival is Rio’s main event of the year and probably the most well-known and well attended event by foreigners attracting thousands of visitors every year from all corners of the globe. The first records of Carnival festivities in Rio de Janeiro date back to 1723. Immigrants from the Portuguese islands of Açores, Madeira and Cabo Verde introduced here the Entrudo. As with other carnival events the festivities take place over 4 days starting on Saturday and ending on Fat Tuesday, or Mardi-Gras with carnival Sunday being seven weeks before Easter Sunday. The samba school parade at Rio´s Sambodrome is the most recognisable and spectacular event of the four days. Seven schools march both on the Sunday and Monday evenings from around 9pm and not finishing until the sun comes up in the morning. The samba marathon is far more than a just a show though, it’s also a fiercely contested competition with one school being downgraded from special to access group, and vice-versa. http://ipanema.com/carnival/index.htm

Not only is the weather still spectacular but also the hordes that descend on the city for Christmas and New Year have long since packed up and gone home, which makes the city so much more manageable and less stressful. Another great reason to visit at this time of year is this is when Cape Town throws its annual pride celebration, so the gay scene is jumping and the tourists and locals alike are all intent on having a great time. The pride festival will take place over the last week of February and the first of March. Festivities over the two weeks include a mouth watering array of events, from pic-nics and beach parties, to gastronomic get togethers and camp cabaret celebrations. The event finally comes to a close with the carnival style parade through Cape Town’s Waterkant district and of course the final finale of Pride, the huge dance party hosted by Cape Town’s largest club promoters, Juicy. www.capetownpride.co.za

SYDNEY MARDI GRAS

Sydney, Australia. 20 Feb – 6 Mar 2010. Sydney’s Mardi Gras needs no introduction as this is probably the most well known queer celebration in the world. In 2010 however though the events format will be changed and the festival will run over 2 weeks instead of 4 with the parade and the party on separate weekends. The new changes are sure to make the event more attractive for the tens of thousands of international visitors who will now be able to experience the whole event in just a fortnight. The theme for the 2010 will be ‘The History of the World’ which is sure to get the creative juices flowing for the float designers and parade participants, expect lavish and outrageous interpretations, as usual. Key events will be the Launch and Fair day on the 21 February, the parade on the 27 February, the Harbour Party on the 28 February and the legendary Party at Fox Studios which will be held on the final weekend on the 6 March. www.mardigras.org.au

Brazil’s Hidden Gay Paradise

beigeislandescapes

The beautiful island of Santa Catarina has long been a favourite for ‘in the know’ South American travellers and it is now also the third most popular destination for gay and lesbian tourists in Brazil. Situated 480 miles southwest of Rio de Janeiro the “Ilha da Magia” or Magic Island as it is called is famous for its lush green, mountains, perfect beaches, beautiful lagoons, laid-back and safe atmosphere and the biggest and best carnival celebrations in the whole of southern Brazil. The capital of the State of Santa Catarina is Florianopolis, or Floripa to the locals and it has long been a magnate for those seeking alternative lifestyles. This charming provincial capital is the largest town on an island that became celebrated during the 1970s for its gorgeous beaches, quaint fishing villages and excellent surf and attracted an influx of migrants

lured by the unspoilt character of the island. Many artists and old time hippies continued to arrive throughout the 80s adding to the laid back atmosphere. This influx of free thinkers and liberal attitudes created not only one of the most affluent areas of Brazil, but also an extremely tolerant and open minded community, a fact that isn’t lost on local South American gay and lesbian tourists. At 54kms long and 18kms wide Santa Catarina has a variety of beautiful landscapes perfect for those looking to include outdoor activities with a relaxing beach holiday. Lush Atlantic rainforest covers the island’s hills, offering views of the local Araucaria forests, pristine rivers and cascading waterfalls. It’s a great place to escape from it all for a few days and walking and trekking through the interior is a popular activity. The best way to discover the island’s hidden spots though is in true gaucho style on horseback. If that all

sounds too energetic you can just relax in a cosy mountain lodge for a few days and unwind completely. Inland there are also beautiful palm fringed lagoons that are just perfect for all manner of water sports, or just a spot of swimming. Anyone visiting the island has the opportunity to try their hand at a whole variety of exciting activities including rock climbing, river rafting, paragliding, hang gliding, cascading and canyoneering, sailing and windsurfing. The main attraction of this unspoilt corner of Brazil though is undoubtedly the dozens of perfect beaches, which range from calm, tranquil coves to the wild and windswept east coast beaches that offer some of the best surfing in South America. The warm, gentle waters of Santa Catarina’s northern beaches attract families with children, especially from December to February, although the upmarket and sophisticated bars and

beigeislandescapes restaurants of Jurere attract a significant number of gay clientele. Those looking for more tranquil beaches though should visit outside of the peak summer months or head further south and east. The east coast beaches of Santinho, Moçambique, Mole and Joaquina are popular hangouts with local surfers and have a young and trendy atmosphere. Praia Mole, directly across the island from Florianopolis is the gayest and of course the trendiest, with the left-side of the beach, near Bar do Deca being the gayest stretch of sand south of Ipanema, we kid you not! Galheta beach next door to Praia Mole is also popular with the gay crowd and is also clothing optional. Further south Campeche, Armação, and Pantano do Sul beaches are even wilder and also even more stunning. These small coastal villages still have strong fishing communities and are some of the most beautiful and unspoilt areas of the island. Campeche also has a sizeable gay and lesbian resident community and the beach here is one of the most fashionable on the island. Lagoinha do Leste and Naufragados beaches can only be accessed by trail or boat, these two remote little spots are possibly the best beaches on the island and perfect for escaping from it all for the day. For a town of just over 400,000 people Florianopolis punches well above its weight in terms of gay amenities. There are around a dozen gay venues including clubs, bars, restaurants and saunas concentrated in downtown Floripa as well the very popular gay beaches too. Although the scene downtown is mainly frequented by gay men, the places are all mixed (as in most places in Brazil) and lesbians looking for nightlife will not be left out. It is during Florianopolis Carnival, which is second only in popularity to Rio for gay South American men that the island really ramps up its queer credentials. This is the largest Mardi Gras celebration in southern Brazil with 50 thousand people attending the event each February and one of the most popular in the country. There are street parties with the Bloco dos Sujos, groups of cross-dressing men being one of its oldest traditions and Brazil’s major clubs host parties throughout the Mardi Gras celebrations. The Pop Gay competition, a beauty contest for Drag Queens and transgenders ahs also establishing itself as one of the biggest events in the Carnival calendar. The climax of these 4 days of celebrations is the parade itself as the local samba schools, colourful floats and thousands of dancers parade through the streets of the town ending at the Sambadromo, where thousands of spectators cheer them on from grand stand seating to watch this amazing spectacle. Praia Mole beach on the east coast becomes the centre of gay activity during the summer, especially during Mardi Gras. Sao Paulo super club ‘The Week’ sets up camp overlooking the beach and hosts five huge parties that attract over 3,000 guys each night from all over the world. For visitors staying in Florianopolis outside of carnival the gay clubs and bars located in downtown Floripa are open all throughout the year. Another major gay event in Florianopolis is the Semana da Diversidade, the local Pride Festival. Now on its third edition, it has been a success since the beginning thanks to the growing popularity of the island with gay holiday makers. The Pride Festival lasts a week and offers besides the Parade, cultural events in Casa da Diversidade, the LGBT headquarters for the week, and the Diversity Games, a unique sporting event in Brazil for gays, lesbians and their friends to socialize through sport. The Pride Parade itself happens over a weekend, and it is one of the most important in the South of Brazil. The first year attracted 30,000 people which represents almost 10% of the city’s population. Check www.diversidadefloripa.com.br for more information and dates.

KEY WEST

Welcome to the Conch Republic Key West’s status as a world class gay destination is unquestionable and a trip to this beautiful island has become a rite of passage for a generation of gay men. The isolated location of the USA’s most southerly city at the far tip of the Florida Keys has helped Key West retain its own very unique character and an extremely relaxed atmosphere. The island is strongly influenced by its European and Caribbean heritage which are as evident as more modern American influences. There are very few places where the gay and lesbian community are as well integrated into mainstream society than Key West, instrumental as it was in helping to spearhead the island’s economic and social revival in the 1980’s. This was one of the first resorts in the USA to openly welcome gay and lesbian tourists. For most people a holiday in Key West will centre in and around one of the many charming guesthouses in the old town. There’s a good selection of accommodation for either mixed or mostly gay crowd and typically these are self contained secluded complexes complete with pools and private gardens. With the emphasis on fun in informal relaxed surroundings these are great places to base yourself for a holiday in Key West, often with complimentary cocktails thrown in! While Pearl’s Rainbow is the only guesthouse catering exclusively to

women several of the gay guesthouses welcome a mixed clientele of both men and women. Of these Alexander’s, Heron House Court and The Pier House are the best options for those looking for a mixed straight/gay clientele where typically the sexual atmosphere is generally lower than some of the male only guesthouses. Alexander’s is an excellent choice for those looking for a top end guesthouse and is located in a large, beautifully restored Victorian house on the edge of the old town. Gay owned and run Alexander’s is popular with well heeled gay and lesbian couples and groups who like to get pampered in comfort. Big Ruby’s also offers up market accommodation for a largely all male crowd and is located just steps from the heart of the action on Duval St. The large, fenced landscaped garden offers respite though and the atmosphere at Ruby’s is fun yet still peaceful, book early if you want to stay here. Heron House Court is one of best appointed guesthouses with superb rooms and is welcoming to everyone both gay and straight. The Equator resort offers excellent amenities, superb hospitality and a beautiful outside landscaped garden and large pool. The resort caters for a 100% gay male crowd and the new owners have made every effort to maintain the highest standards making this a first rate

choice. Another all gay resort, the Island House has undergone a major facelift recently and offers excellent service and first rate facilities. One of the largest guesthouses with 38 rooms the Island Houses has something of a reputation for its clothing optional pool area and steamy atmosphere. Together the Coral Tree Inn, Coconut Grove and Oasis collectively make up the largest all male guesthouse on the island with guests having access to all three properties. Of the three the Oasis, with its 24 man hot tub and the recently refurbished Coconut Grove, which is popular with European visitors make the best choices. Pearl’s Rainbow takes up five historically significant and excellently renovated buildings offering a range of accommodation options. There are also 2 pools, the islands only women only bar and a restaurant open to non residents. This is definitely Florida’s, if not the world’s finest resort just for women. Three star options include the men only New Orleans House which is located on the gayest block on Duval St. There are just 10 rooms at New Orleans House which has improved since gay management took over, a great option for those wanting to be close to Key West’s night life. For those looking for more privacy or travelling in a group then renting a house is another great option when staying in Key West. Two websites offering a range of one to five bedroom homes with private pools in some cases are www.historichideaways.com and www.rentkeywest.com. Key West is served by Key West airport which has daily direct flights from Miami, Orlando and Atlanta airports. Driving to Key West from Miami along US Highway 1 is a drive of breathtaking beauty which you should do in at

least one direction. US 1 is also known as the Overseas Highway because of the many bridges that link the islands and all of the towns in the Keys with mainland Florida. While this drive is well worth it a car in Key West is not necessary as the town itself is easily navigated by foot so getting a one way car rental and flying the return leg (or vica versa) is ideal. Although not known for its fantastic beaches there are a few local haunts which are favourites with local and visiting gays and lesbians. Closest to town is Fort Zachary Taylor, the beach has little sand and can be a little uncomfortable although there are beach chairs available to rent. To get there take Southard Street to the western tip of the island. 35 miles east of Key West is the Bahia Honda state park and although you will need a car to get here it is one of the best beaches in the Keys with pristine white sand. Take Highway 1 east and just after Big Pine Key follow the signs for Viking Beach. Closer to Key West the neighbouring island of Boca Chica Key is also popular with gay men. Turn right off Highway 1 on Boca Chica Road and follow the road to the end. Continue on the coastal path which leads directly to the beach.

A full listing of attractions, sights, accommodation, restaurants and nightlife can be found at www.gaykeywestfl.com, the official web site for Key West gay tourism.

Costa

Rica Serene Natural Splendour

Situated in Central America between Nicaragua and Panama, Costa Rica is becoming and ever increasingly popular tourist destination, especially for gay and lesbian tourists who find an exceptionally warm welcome here. Costa Rica is an unusually progressive nation for this turbulent region, the country has no army and has remained a politically stable democracy for years. Approximately two thirds the size of Scotland, Costa Rica is home to a hugely diverse range of landscapes for such a small country. Pristine forests, towering volcanoes, magnificent coastlines and abundant wildlife make this the closest to a tropical paradise that many people will ever experience. Because of the unspoilt character of the country Costa Rica has become one of the premier Eco-tourism destinations in the world and is also a magnate for those seeking adventure and activity holidays. Those who are just looking for to relax and unwind in a location of unspoilt natural beauty though will definitely not be disappointed. Gay life in Costa Rica is mostly concentrated in the larger towns and cities, particularly the capital San Jose where there is a small but well established gay community. The most popular tourist areas in Costa Rica are on the Pacific coast, and the west coast resorts of Manuel Antonio and Quepos, close to San Jose are also the most popular with gay travellers. The gay nude beach at Manuel Antonio National Park as well as several gay-focused hotels in the area makes this the most popular base for gay tourists. There are also a handful of gay friendly and owned establishments in other areas of the country which are also worth visiting. The towns of Playas Samara and Carrillo in the Guanacaste region, also on the Pacific Coast and the Arenal Volcano area being some of the other popular destinations with gay and straight tourists alike. Escape from mainland to some of the islands off the coast of Costa Rica for a true castaway experience.

Tortuga

Located three kilometres offshore of Curú National Wildlife Reserve the island of Tortuga is as close to an idyllic tropical isle as you’ll find almost anywhere. The main attraction is a magnificent white-sand beach lined with coconut palms which has made Tortuga, or Turtle Island in English has become a favourite destination of day-trippers from the mainland. To reach Tortuga excursion boats and cruises depart from Puntarenas and Los Sueños marina at Playa Herradura, near the town of Jacó. The 90-minute journey out to the island passes by the equally scenic islands of Negritos, San Lucas, Gitana, and Guayabo en-route to Tortuga itself. Probably the best equipped boat that currently runs to the island is Calypso’s super catamaran Manta Raya, which is a great base for a day spent at Tortuga. Once at the island there are innumerable ways to fill the hours until the boats return at the end of the day. Snorkelling and swimming in the clear waters around the island are popular; you may even see the manta rays, pilot whales and whale sharks that frequent the coasts here. Those that just want to relax on some of the best beaches in Costa Rica will be in their element, Tortuga Island is known for its immaculate white sand beach and perfectly clear turquoise waters.

Isla del Caño

Costa Rica’s Isla del Caño is located 15kms off of the Osa Peninsula in the Bahia de Coronado (Bay of Coronado) on Costa Rica’s Pacific west coast. The best way to get to the island is on one of the organised dive boat as access to this protected area is restricted. Boats leave from Drake Bay or from Dominical at the Mystic Dive Centre in Ventanas and it is possible to visit on day trips or longer thanks to camping facilities on the island. Isla del Caño is compelling for a couple of very important reasons. Firstly this island was used as a burial ground by pre-Colombian Indians, the evidence of which can be seen in the shape of the perfectly carved stone spheres that are scattered mysteriously around the island. The second is that the island is located in a biological reserve and offers some of the best diving and snorkelling conditions in the world. The waters around the island are crystal clear, with visibility rarely falling below 50 feet and the water teems with wildlife. Sea turtles, dolphins, manta rays and several different species of whale are frequently seen gliding through the waters just offshore. Theses rich waters also support a huge variety of corals and sea fans which makes this one of the best underwater experiences anywhere on the planet.

Cocos Island

Approaching Cocos Island is something like a scene from Jurassic Park, but there are no monsters, (prehistoric at least) in the forested mountain that rise vertically from the deep blue waters 340 miles from the coast of Coasta Rica. This is probably Costa Rica’s most well-known and popular island destination and those who decide to take the boat journey out to this island are in for a unique experience. Cocos Island is in the same class as the Galapagos Islands and rises from the same underwater volcanic ridge. It was also described by Jacques Cousteau as “the most beautiful island in the world”. The island’s remote location and inaccessible terrain once made this a favourite haunt for pirates, but visitors now come for the islands natural treasures. Forests, rivers, and tumbling waterfalls can be explored in the islands interior but once again it is underwater where the main attractions are to be found. The convergence of warm and colder deep water currents provides the perfect conditions for the abundant sea life that inhabits the waters around Cocos. The rich waters are home to 30 species of coral on the surrounding reefs which provide a rich habitat for over 300 species of fish and hundreds of species of molluscs and crustaceans. The combination of reefs and the deep waters that surround the island also provide the perfect habitat for larger animals including populations of yellow fin tuna, giant mantas, magnificent sailfish and also sharks, such as White tip reef shark, Scalloped hammerhead shark and the world’s largest fish, the whale shark. Large marine mammals are also frequently seen by divers and snorkelers here including humpback and pilot whales, bottlenose dolphins, sea lions, as well as hawksbill and green turtles.

Island of the Gods ‘Paradise’ is a word that is often used when describing Bali and not without reason. The island is famous for its varied and beautiful landscapes of lush tropical forests, pristine crater lakes, fast flowing rivers and deep ravines, picturesque rice terraces and fertile gardens. Bali’s beaches are just as varied as the rest of the island’s landscapes; while the palm fringed white sandy beaches of the east coast draw the majority of tourists, the wilder black volcanic sand beaches of the west coast and sleepy coves that line the north are just as exotic and alluring. The chain of six volcanoes that runs across the centre of the island from east to west provides the dramatic backdrop for the extremely colourful and deeply spiritual culture of the ‘Island of The Gods’.

Bali is one of 17,000 islands that make up the Indonesian archipelago. Situated 2 kilometres from the eastern tip of the island of Java and west of the island of Lombok, Bali is the number one tourist destination in Indonesia with over 80% of international tourists to the country coming to Bali alone. Unlike the rest of Indonesia, which is largely Muslim, Bali is the largest enclave of Hindu religion and culture outside of India. Every aspect of Balinese life is suffused with religion and regulated by a complicated series of rituals and beautiful ceremonies aimed at maintaining balance between the forces of good and evil. The spirituality of the island is impossible to ignore and makes this an enchanting place to visit as well as also being one of the friendliest and most hospitable holiday destinations for gay and lesbian tourists in Asia.

When to go

beigeislandescapes

Situated just 8 degrees south of the equator Bali has a tropical year round climate with constant day time temperatures of between 20 and 30 degrees Celsius. The year can be divided into two seasons, wet and dry but these are only relative. There is plenty of rainfall year round but the Balinese winter is cloudier, more humid and with a higher chance of thunderstorms. From December to March, the West monsoon can bring heavy showers and high humidity, but usually days are sunny and the rains start during the night and pass quickly. From June to September the humidity is low with cooler evening temperatures. During this time of the year there is hardly any rain in the coastal areas. Due to Bali’s mountainous landscape the weather inland can also be subject to change with higher rainfall than coastal areas at all times of the year. Peak times of the year can also get very busy in Bali, with July and August and also Christmas and New Year Being the busiest times. Australian tourists are also likely to visit the island during the school holidays in April, June and September and Indonesians during their national holidays. If you are thinking of travelling to Bali during these times then booking well in advance is recommended to avoid disappointment. Arranging your trip here outside of peak times can result in considerable savings on accommodation as well of course as not being quite so crowded.

What to see Bali’s best-known attractions other than the beaches are its countless Hindu temples, beautiful rice terraces and mountainous landscapes. Of the temples the nine directional temples (kayangan jagat) are the largest and most important. At the southern tip of Bali, close to the main tourist areas is the Uluwatu temple which is easily accessible but also the most popular. The Tanah Lot temple sits on a beautiful rocky outcrop 20km west of the capital Denpasar on the east coast. This is also a popular temple with tourists and offers some fantastic photo opportunities, particularly at sunset when the sun sets behind the temple into the sea. For the Balinese themselves the “Mother Temple” of Besakih on the slopes of Mount Agung is the most sacred and largest of all Bali’s temples and a trip to the east of the island is well worth a day trip. The drive to Besakih in the east of Bali passes through stunning mountain landscapes and picturesque rice terraces on the way. A stop at the walled “Bali Aga” mountain village of Tenganan is also high on most people’s agendas when visiting Besakih.

Gay Bali

Gay life is tolerated all over Bali but centres around the larger cities in the south, particularly in Kuta and Seminyak on the east coast. Although there is no official gay beach Petitenget or Ganesha beach on the northern end of Kuta beach close to Seminyak is the most popular on the island. This was once a nude beach and although nudity is no longer permitted the beach remains the firm gay favourite. The bushes at the back of the beach can be quite cruisy, particularly in late afternoons. The beach has a large open air bar and restaurant serving excellent food called La Lucciola. This is a great place to have dinner and watch the famous Balinese sunset although this a popular haunt so bookings are recommended. There are several gay owned and gay only guesthouses on the island, mostly located close to the beach in Seminyak where Bali’s small but lively gay scene is concentrated. The exception is the str8-friendly clothing-optional Bali au Naturel resort. Located on the beach on the island’s unspoilt north coast the hotel offers a complete respite from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. After dinner the place to head for is Dhyana Pura Street, (also known as Gado Gado Street) where most of the gay venues are located. The newest bar on the street is Bali Joe’s, where you can enjoy a quiet cocktail, enjoy the go-go boys and drag shows and party until the small hours with locals and ex-pats alike. Q-Bar and the Mixwell bar, both also located on Dhyana Pura Street offer a similar format of live entertainment, music and dancing boys. Living It Up

Down Under

Hot bronzed Aussies aside, Australia has a lot more to offer than tanned, toned beefcake you know! Taking inspiration from our favourite Aussie movie, ‘Priscilla’ we delve under Sydney’s flamboyant skirts to discover her hip hotels, hot hangouts, rave restaurants and the essential experiences vital for any modern gay traveller to the city. Moving on, minus the drag we follow in our intrepid trannie’s larger than average stiletto prints all the way to the heart of the Red Centre and discover the natural beauty of the Australian outback and the continent’s most iconic landscapes.

Secret E

SYDNEY

nigmatic, stylish, cosmopolitan, effervescent, beautiful and sexy, Sydney is one of the most familiar gay destinations on the planet, and for good reason too. What gay traveller could fail to be seduced by a city whose many charms include such excellent weather, a salubrious outdoor lifestyle plus a notoriously flamboyant gay scene? Sydney is a city with many wonderful assets and consequently it has become one of the most popular and desirable destinations on the globe for both straight and gay travellers alike. Despite being so far away Sydney is also so very familiar. No matter whether you have never been before, or visited many times Sydney is instantly recognisable. We all share at least some knowledge about the city; its landmarks, attractions and gay hotspots and we all have no doubt been eagerly informed by returning friends or exiled natives where the best places to stay, rest and play are and which attractions are requisite during a visit. Certainly experiencing the city on a harbour cruise, an exhilarating bridge climb and exploration of Darlinghurst harbour are all highly recommended, but here are our recommendations for some of Sydney’s special secret spots that will help you experience this wonderful city like a local. A good starting point is the historic Rocks area of the city; ok so this is tourist central but it was here after all where the first settlers landed in 1788 and it is the most historic area of the city. The Rocks is located beneath the giant arches of Sydney’s Harbour Bridge overlooking the famous sails of the Opera House, so at the very least you will find some excellent photo opportunities. The area is full of 19th century warehouse buildings that have now been converted to cater for the myriad of tourists who flock here. There are plenty of shops, bars,

restaurants, museums, attractions and galleries to explore where you can pick up all of those nic-nacs, souvenirs and gifts. This is also where you can find the excellent Museum of Contemporary Art at 140 George St. the jewel of Sydney’s arts scene. The weekly Sunday market which takes place on George St. is the place to pick up individual and inspiring gifts from local artists, farmers, designers and craftspeople. You can find out more about The Rocks and the rest of the city at the visitor’s centre on the corner of Argyle Street and Playfair Street in the Rocks area. Don’t forget to get your Book of Discounts which is included in the Sydney Official Guide here. If the shopping and the crowds get too much then respite can be found in one of the area’s many excellent pubs or restaurants. The Glenmore Hotel’s roof top bar is an excellent spot for an ice cold beer served with complimentary views of the harbour or try the Australian Hotel for a great range of authentic Aussie beers and a lively atmosphere, both are located on Cumberland St. Reputedly the oldest pub in Sydney (although several claim this honour) the classic Aussie drinking experience available at The Hero of Waterloo is another genuine Sydney experience and worth a look even if it is a little passé. For a more upmarket drinking experience try the Shangri-La hotel’s Blue Horizon Bar which serves elegant cocktails in equally graceful surroundings 36 floors above the harbour. Arrive early and bag yourself a window seat and for excellent views for dinner. The Sydney Theatre just around the bay from the Harbour Bridge on Walsh Bay is Sydney’s premier theatre for drama and dance and the perfect place to head for

42 | beigetravel | issue 2

a culturally enriching experience. Opened in 2004 this is the newest addition to the theatre complex along Hickson Rd. at Walsh Bay. The Sydney Theatre presents a year-round program of modern Australian plays plus contemporary takes on the classics. Cate Blanchett joined the company as joint Artistic Director in 2008, adding star appeal to what was already Australia’s most prestigious theatre . Dining options in The Rocks are also numerous and varied with a choice to suit all tastes and budgets. If you feel like indulging yourself head for Peter Doyle @ Quay, which has been voted the best restaurant in Australia, but be sure to book before arriving to avoid disappointment. Cutting-edge grill restaurant Pony Lounge and Dining on Kendall Lane serves delectable meaty treats, for award winning seafood-dining Rockpool on Turner Road is the place to beach yourself for a couple of hours. For an authentic taste of Japan try Nakashima at 7 Cambridge Street, or for sleek, modern, Pacific fusion creations the menu at Ocean Room is sure to impress, much more than the address at least which is Ground Level, Overseas Passenger Terminal on Circular Quay West. As one heads further around the harbour on Circular Quay West towards the Opera House there are even more dining options lining the harbour. For al-fresco waterfront dining with views across to the Opera House head for Italian Village, Cruise Bar (it’s not what you’re thinking) and Waterfront. More contemporary and stylish venues like Wildfire and Café Sydney have inspiring modern menus and equally fine views from inside their flawlessly designed interiors. From Circular Quay there are numerous ferries that ply the harbour taking

commuters and tourists around the city. The ferries run frequently and at a fraction of the cost of the sight-seeing boats and are the perfect way to do your own sightseeing tour of the city. Ferries run to most parts of the city from Circular Quay, the 15 minutes jet boat or 30 minute ferry ride to Manly offers the quintessential Sydney Harbour experience though. The suburb of Manly sits on the north side of the harbour between the tranquil waters of the harbour and the pounding surf of the Pacific beaches. Surfing is king here, the local culture is drenched in it; try for yourself by booking a lesson at one of the many surf schools along the promenade. Renting a kayak to discover quiet corners of the harbour is another favourite past time in Manly or get bike and enjoy over 20kms of coastal bike routes that run alongside the beautiful northern beaches. There is also the opportunity to sail, windsurf, scuba dive or just sit and enjoy the view with fish and chips from one of the excellent cafes, bars, and restaurants that line Manly promenade. One of Sydney’s most famous walking routes, the Manly Scenic Walkway starts here and actually is a series of connecting walks suitable for all abilities. Pick up a copy of the Manly Scenic Walk brochure at Manly Wharf on arrival for details of what to see along the way. Hugo’s restaurant on the wharf is highly recommended too and overlooks the harbour back towards Sydney. Back on the south side of the harbour at Circular Quay and carry along the waterfront to reach Sydney’s famous Opera House. Concerts are not the only thing that can be enjoyed at this prominent landmark, the bar on the ground level

beigeaustralia concourse has enviable drinks and food menus and great views of the bridge and city skyline, especially at night. This is also one of the best live music venues in the city with Sydney’s top musicians and bands playing nightly from 8.30 during the week and from 2pm at weekends. To the south of the Opera House walk through the Botanic Gardens still further east along the harbour to reach Woolloomooloo and Kings Cross. This is one of Sydney’s most lively entertainment districts and is packed with bars and clubs. Kings Cross is Sydney’s former red light district and still retains an edgy and sleazy atmosphere but has cleaned up its act to a large degree and now defines Aussie urban cool. More upmarket venues can be found in Woolloomooloo and Potts Point closest to the harbour; try one of the great seafood restaurants on Finger Wharf or a cocktail on Darlinghurst Road. The Sugar Mill is one of Sydney’s newest and most popular bars and packs a punch with locals and visitors alike. The Piano Room is Sydney’s newest take on old school style with classic cocktails, an elegant supper club menu and classy live entertainment each evening, both are also on Darlinghurst Road. Jimmy Liks restaurant and bar also serves up a cocktail and culinary storm for the trendy Kings Cross set on Victoria St. The Lincoln on Bayswater Rd. is also synonymous of the new breed of chic establishments that are springing up in the area making this one of Sydney’s hippest night time hangouts and a must do suburb. For some wholesome and hearty food Maggie’s diner on Macleay St. serves up an un fussy but delicious Austrian-German inspired menu (You’ll have to trust us on this one!) and a very gay friendly welcome too. The legendary Harry’s Café de Wheels on the corner of Cowper Wharf Roadway and Brougham Road in Woolloomooloo is the place to head at practically any time of the day or night for the best pies in town. This is classic Aussie fast food, packed to the gunnels with meat and served with a generous dollop of mashed potato, mushy peas and gravy on top; messy but delicious. Neighbouring Kings Cross to the south is Darlinghurst, home to Sydney’s legendary Oxford St. with its drag shows, gay bars and nightclubs. There are plenty of gay venues still in and around Oxford St. although an alternative scene has sprung up in the bohemian district of Newtown which has a growing number of gay venues and residents. This is also where the Imperial Hotel made famous in the opening scenes of Priscilla is located, recently re-opened after a run in with the local council the drag shows here are still the best in town. The Oxford St. equivalent is The Stonewall Hotel where there are drag shows, lively entertainment and go-go boys, if this is your kind of bar you’ll be in your element. As predictable as Oxford St. can be its still fun, if a little trashy. The Columbian is the newest arrival on the strip and is representative of many of the venues here, 2 floors of dancing, flirting, local DJs, local ladz and ladiez and a lively atmosphere. Don’t just limit yourself to Oxford St. though, there’s a whole raft of friendly and fun venues to check just off the main strip too. The Green Park on Victoria St. is one of the coolest bars in the area with a very welcoming atmosphere. While not entirely gay it does attract the ‘it’ crowd, especially on Sunday afternoons when this is the place to be seen. Close by the Victoria Rooms serves a good selection of cocktails and bar snacks and nibbles to a mixed crowd in lavish colonial surroundings. Fish Face on Darlinghurst Rd. (also just off Oxford St.) is a great restaurant and not to be missed and serves stunning contemporary fish dishes and mouth watering sushi. Perennial clubbing favourites Midnight Shift on Oxford St. and Arq located just around the corner on Flinders St. still pack in crowds of punters who are shirtless before they hit the dance floor. This being Sydney both venues also have drag shows, talent contests and varied live entertainment too. Sydney’s newest after-hours venue Phoenix Rising at the Phoenix Underground on Oxford St. is the place to head when all other venues have shut for the night on Saturday and Sunday mornings. While you are in the area also do not miss the shopping experience on Crown Street in Surry Hills. This is the place for offbeat, cutting-edge designer clothing where funky and fresh boutiques sell Australian brands such as Cloth, Planet and Metlab.

City Centre

Downtown Sydney, the heart of this busy metropolis and home to some of the city’s finest dining, shopping and sightseeing experiences. The Sydney Heritage Walk is a good way to get acquainted with this area of the city and best of all it’s free. The walk starts at Circular Quay winding its way through the central business district ending at the City Hall. Guides to this and other self guided walks of Sydney are available from the www.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au website. Make sure you take a walk along Macquarie St. to see the fine examples of early colonial architecture and also the Victorian elegance of The Queen Victoria Building (QVB) and the Strand Arcade on George St. both now house two of Sydney’s finest shopping arcades. The Pitt St. Mall is another place to head for great shopping, located under the Sydney Tower, the tallest building in the city it’s also easy to find. Elizabeth and Castlereagh streets are also home to top designer labels, brand name goods and luxury boutique shops. Exclusive and upmarket bars and restaurants abound in downtown Sydney and this is the place to head for exclusive refreshments in refined surroundings. The Ivy bar is Sydney’s ultimate platinum party destination where you can move seamlessly from a glass of champagne on The Lawn, to dinner poolside at the rooftop Italian restaurant, Uccello. No visit is complete here without reclining on elegant lounges in The Den sipping cocktails and grazing on modern Japanese canapés from the superb Teppanyaki. The Ivy caters to a mixed but mainly straight crowd, however during Mardi Gras the emphasis shifts and The Ivy’s mood shifts and becomes distinctly queerer. 44 | beigetravel | issue 2

Sepia on Sussex St. close to Darling Harbour in the city is one of the newest arrivals on Sydney’s restaurant scene and is already serving funky, modern Australian cuisine to much critical acclaim. Located in probably the finest Art Deco building in Australia, the Rockpool Bar and Grill is one of the most stylish and elegant dining experiences in city. Beef is the star of the show here with stock from all of Australia’s premium beef producers, seafood also gets the same reverential treatment and there’s also a comprehensive wine list to ponder. For an authentic taste of Japan Tetsuya restaurant is consistently ranked in the top 10 restaurants in the world and is one, if not the most coveted dining experience in Australia. Impeccable service, elegant decor and a menu based on the Japanese philosophy of natural seasonal flavours enhanced by classic French techniques are all available on Kent St.

Bonza Beaches for Boyz

Sydney’s coastal suburbs are a magnate for everyone from backpackers to billionaires, beach bums to the body beautiful and everyone in between. It is here that you can come and enjoy Sydney’s famous beach lifestyle and take in the beautiful coastline of Sydney’s amazing city beaches. The first stop for most tourists, gay and straight alike will be Bondi which is probably the most famous beach in Australia. This is one of the safest beaches in Sydney to swim, being well patrolled and benefitting from a sheltered southerly facing position. The north section of the beach has become the most popular coastal beach in the city for local gays and lesbians, particularly in front of the North Bondi lifesaving club. Bus numbers 380 and 382 take you direct to Bondi

Beach via Oxford Street from Circular Quay West, or take the train to Bondi Junction and catch the same bus numbers to the beach. For a special treat at the end of the day head for Icebergs Dining Room and bar which has one of the best locations in all of Sydney. Hovering over the sea at the south end of Bondi Beach this restaurant and bar is a great place to head for stylish cocktails at sunset, delectable Mediterranean cuisine and amazing beach views. The coastal walk from Bondi to the south towards Coogee takes in more excellent beaches and dramatic coastline along the way, if you have the time this is a wonderful walk. The walk passes several bays

including Tamarama, (formerly Sydney’s most popular gay beach), Bronte and Clovelly before reaching the beautiful beach at Coogee. Stop here at the Coogee Beach Hotel which serves up a legendary Sea Breeze and has excellent views along the beach. Some of Sydney’s harbour beaches are among the gayest places in the city and also offer more tranquil waters and safer swimming conditions than the ocean side coastline. The 2 nude beaches, Obelisk Beach and Lady Jane Beach are, not surprisingly also the most gay friendly and once you find out where to go the experience should be rewarding. Obelisk Beach is on the north side of Sydney Harbour near to Mosman and can be a little difficult to get to, unless you have a boat that is or take a water taxi which can be quite expensive. To get to the beach by bus take bus 244 from Wynyard Station in the city. When you get on ask driver if he is going to Middle Head Oval. If you are heading to Obelisk then take water, and suntan cream as the beach is secluded and has no facilities to speak of. More accessible is Lady Jane Beach which is directly opposite Obelisk on the south side of the harbour just inside the harbour entrance to the south side of The Heads. Buses 324 or 325 run to Watsons Bay just south of Lady Jane, as do ferries from Circular Quay and the beach can then be reached by following the coast north. Stop for fish and chips at the Watson Bay Hotel on your return. The Women’s pool at Coogee has become the most popular beach for ladies and is a women only haven that is very popular with local and visiting lesbians too. The pool occupies a lovely location overlooking beautiful Cogee Bay and is accessible to all women for a small entrance fee.

Queensland Mardi Gras Recovery Week

March 1st to 7th 2010 Party in Sydney, Recover in Paradise! If you’re heading Down Under to the world’s hottest gay soiree, Sydney ‘s Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras (27th February 2010) don’t miss the festival’s hottest ticket – your place in the sun at Queensland’s Mardi Gras Recovery Week. An hour‘s flight north of Sydney lands you in paradise for seven days and nights of surf, sun and fun. Queensland Mardi Gras Recovery Week organiser Rod Stringer says the event is a must on anyone’s calendar. “Any serious party goer knows the most important ingredient is the recovery –you’ve partied hard – and the reward is taking it easy, restoring body and soul so you can do it all again! “

He said the event offered the perfect mix of relaxation, adventure and socialising. “We’ve carefully balanced the program to include a fully escorted wilderness day trip to World-Heritage Fraser Island, a day snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef, a gala dinner at the beachside resort enclave of Noosa, pool parties, time for shopping and lazy days at the beach before the finale, Brisbane’s Big Gay Day – a fabulous street party featuring guest DJ’s, live bands and plenty of local color. “It’s the idyllic way to recover – warm tropical waters, clean beaches as far as the eye can see, and an opportunity to meet and mingle,“ he said.

After partying hard at Sydney’s Mardi Gras, Queensland is simply the best place to chill under the sun: the perfect mix of surf, sun and socialising. Imagine a week at Noosa working on your tan, exploring the wilderness of world heritage Fraser Island and meeting the locals at the gala dinner and then off to Brisbane for the Big Gay Day Street party.

Northern Territory A

ustralia is perhaps the ideal country in which to take a 2 centre holiday. Internal flights can often be booked at little or no extra cost when planning your holiday and will allow you to explore Australia’s iconic landscapes all the way from the red centre to the pristine coastline. We

decided to explore the Northern Territory as an optional extra to Sydney and New South Wales for a couple of very good reasons. Firstly taking a flight into, or returning from Darwin in the very north of the Northern Territory knocks a hefty 4 hours off flying times to or from Sydney, making this a great gateway to enter or leave the country from.

beigeaustralia Secondly, following the success of the excellent musical version of Priscilla Queen of the Desert in London’s West End, (if you haven’t seen it, go now) it seemed like the perfect opportunity to retrace the route of that famous pink bus from Sydney to the heart of Australia and the very gay friendly Red Centre town of Alice Springs. Although those intrepid drag divas stopped once they reached Alice, we continue further north through some amazing outback landscapes, (think ‘Crocodile Dundee’ and ‘Australia the movie’) to finally arrive on the tropical northern coast of Australia at Darwin. ‘Where the fuck are we?” who could forget the immortal line which was uttered by Bernadette as she staggered from the door of the bus into deepest outback Australia. Where she found herself in fact was the mining town of Coober Pedy, the opal capital of the world which is located at the northern end of South Australia. Of course Bernadette, Mitzi and Felicia may just as well have landed on the moon as this is not a place renowned for its cabaret, sequins and stiletto thigh length boots. That of course was the whole point though. If you had to pick one place in the world where a drag queen wouldn’t fit it would be Coober Pedy. Life here is harsh and decades of mining have left mounds of white debris piled across the yellow desert which contains a quarter of a million mine shafts. You couldn’t invent a more desolate place if you tried, which is why this landscape has been used as the backdrop for dozens of apocalyptic movies, most famously in Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. The town has a population of just 3,500 made up of 45 nationalities, half of whom live underground to escape summer temperatures that can reach in excess of 50c, all of them however are here for one reason, mining opals. You can experience ‘dugout’ living for yourself as the Desert Cave Hotel, Coober Pedy (desertcave.com.au) doubles from AU$218 per night. The Stuart Highway offers the only way in, or out of from Coober Pedy. Starting in Adelaide on the south coast it runs for 1,761 miles right through the centre of Australia until it reaches Darwin in the north. Drive north from Coober Pedy, 425 miles north to be exact and you eventually arrive in Alice Springs. This drive gives you a sense of the vastness of this country but this is no place for a drag, or any other sort of queen to get stranded. Miles and miles of scrub and bright red desert earth stretches as far as the eye can see on either side of a road that disappears north over the horizon into the Northern Territory. The low rise town of Alice Springs itself eventually appears from the desert without any fuss or fanfare, a tiny dot that blends into this vast desert landscape. Alice ‘appears’ once you come through the MacDonnell Ranges, once as high as the Himalayas, this land is over 1.3 million years old! Alice began life as a pioneering town and is proud of its frontier heritage but has reinvented itself as a relaxed resort town with all of the 21st century amenities. Thankfully this oasis in the heart of Australian outback can also be reached by air from Sydney in just 3 hours for those who would rather arrive by airbus than pink bus. Gay and lesbian tourists travelling to Australia can find information on accommodation, tours and events on the Gay & Lesbian Tourism Australia website (www.galta.com.au). There are 21 GALTA members in the Northern Territory offering a range of services products and information on Alice Springs and Northern Territory attractions. Alice Springs is at the heart of the Red Centre region which also encompasses the East and West MacDonnell Ranges, Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park and Kings Canyon. Kings Canyon in the Watarrka National Park is our last stop on our Priscilla tour, it was here that the spectacular finale was filmed with Mitzi scaling the cliffs in that sequined gown with peacock feathers. The scene was originally due to be shot on Uluru, but the idea of a drag queen traipsing up this sacred Aboriginal site was unsurprisingly rejected. Although less famous than Uluru, Kings Canyon is spectacular in its own right, a beautiful sandstone gorge with walls 300metres high and spectacular views of the surrounding outback country.

The MacDonnell Ranges straddle Alice Springs and their spectacular gorges and chasms set the scene for adventure activities such as bush walking, swimming and camping. If you thought there was no water in the desert, think again! A wallow in the cool waters of Ellery Creek, Big Hole or Ormiston Gorge is one of the best ways to spend the day in this land of perpetual sunshine, in the midst of towering red cliffs and ancient geological marvels. The MacDonnell Ranges can be discovered on a day tour from Alice Springs, or self drivers can spend longer and explore the area further. Several camping sites are available throughout the region offering the opportunity to spend an unforgettable night under the desert sky. South west of Alice Springs is World Heritage listed Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, home to the iconic Uluru (Ayers Rock) and Kata Tjuta (The Olgas). The resort of Yulara close to Uluru is home to a range of hotels from the prestigious Longitude 131, a five star resort through to self catering accommodation and also a campground. Watarrka National Park is located north east of Uluru and features Kings Canyon, a mighty chasm with sandstone cliffs, walking trails, palm filled crevices and stunning desert views. There is also a resort just outside of Wattarka National Park which also has a range of accommodation from campsites, to luxury properties. Joining an organised tour, many of which depart from Alice Springs is probably the best way to see all of the great landmarks of the Red Centre. It’s worth remembering though that the distances are vast and you could find yourself travelling more than 1,000kms if you decide to take a day trip to Uluru for example. Joining a tour over several nights to one week is the best way to immerse oneself in the natural and cultural splendour and make the most of this unique desert destination.

As beautiful this part of Australia is, the Northern Territory is not just about the Red Centre. Departing Alice Springs travelling north and you leave the rusty reds of the Outback and enter the fertile greens of the Northern Territory’s Top End. Flights from Alice to Darwin take approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes but it is also possible to travel between the 2 towns on the Ghan railroad which is one of the world’s great train journeys. The Ghan originally linked Adelaide and Alice Springs, since 2004 however it has been possible to take the train all the way through to Darwin which takes roughly 24 hours from Alice Springs. The Northern Territory’s Top End can be roughly divided into the wet and dry seasons with most of the rain falling in the tropical summer (December to March) with temperatures consistently remaining around 32 degrees year round. It is warm and sunny from May to September with ideal weather conditions, from October to April the humidity rises and rainfall increases which can be intense with spectacular thunder storms. Most of the rain generally falls in the Northern Territory from January to March although this time of year the weather can be unpredictable. This can still be a fantastic time to visit Darwin if you are prepared to be a little adventurous and slightly flexible. Waterfalls and rivers are swollen with rain and the flora and fauna come alive during the wet season which is the greenest and most attractive time of year in NT. Taking a scenic flight over the wetlands at this time of the year is an amazing experience definitely not to be missed.

Darwin is the Northern Territory’s capital and this lively harbour city of just 100,000 people is the gateway to this region’s natural treasure trove of experiences, but the city itself has plenty to keep visitors occupied. Exceptional outdoor markets such as the Mindil Beach Market that takes place every Thursday and Sunday and includes over 60 sublime food stalls as well as local arts and crafts is well worth a visit. Darwin is also a centre for Aboriginal art and there are some exceptional galleries and artist’s cooperatives in the town too. The Northern Territory Supreme Court Art Collection, Maningrida Arts and Culture and the Mbantua Gallery feature the work of some of Australia’s finest Aboriginal artists. Darwin’s climate is similar to nearby Bali and Singapore and the local cuisine has not only been influenced by the climate, which produces fine exotic ingredients, but also by the proximity to its Asian neighbours too. Foodies should head for the numerous restaurants on Mitchell and Knuckley Streets and also Cullen Bay, the newly developed waterfront development offering a barrage of excellent seafood eateries. Whilst in Darwin do not miss seeing one of the area’s most famous residents, the awesome salt water crocodile. Crocodylus Park and Crocosaurus Cove let you get up close and personal with these powerful reptiles, you can even come face to face with one if you brave the cage of death, definitely not for the faint hearted. A river boat cruise on the Adelaide River will allow you to see beigetravel | issue 2 | 59

beigeaustralia these magnificent animals in their natural habitat. Litchfield National Park is the closest of several spectacular wilderness areas to Darwin and being just 100kms south west of Darwin is easily reached during a day trip from the city. The park is an excellent example of the Top End’s unique habitat and is accessible year round and without the need for a 4x4 thanks to some sealed tarmac roads in the park. Highlights in the park include numerous impressive waterfalls which cascade from a sandstone plateau called the Tabletop Range. The double waterfall at Florence Falls cascades into a deep plunge pool surrounded by tropical rainforest, the perfect place to cool off after climbing the 160 steps to the pool itself. The pool at the bottom of the Tolmer cascade is also another favourite beauty spot where you can cool off with a relaxing dip. Wangi falls is possibly the most popular attraction in the park; swimming is not always permitted here after heavy rains though. The World Heritage-listed Kakadu National Park is Australia’s largest

national park and is situated 170kms south east of Darwin. Nature abounds in this area of towering rock escarpments, lush wetlands, tropical forests and one of the highest concentrations of Aboriginal rock art in Australia. The landscapes of Kakadu and Arnhem Land represent the chance to experience an authentic outback adventure travel experience. Kakadu covers a vast area off over 20,000 square kilometres and to be fully appreciated a few days should be spent here. Self drivers are well catered for with sealed roads to most major attractions, although a 4 wheel drive vehicle or organised tour will get you to more remote areas of the park. Kakadu is home to Aboriginal people, many of whom operate their own tourism enterprises. Visitors looking for a true indigenous experience and a greater understanding of the local aboriginal culture can do so by using a local operator such as Animal Tracks Tours, Hawk Dreaming Safari Camp, The Murdudjuri Art Centre and Tours and the Kakadu Culture Camp.

We know that you, our readers are a well travelled, sophisticated bunch who know a thing or two about trotting around the globe and the best places to stay already. Keeping abreast of what’s hot in the fast paced world of the hotel industry can be tough though, but fret not, for help is close at hand. We have scoured the planet to find the hippest, hottest and freshest places to stay where impeccable service, uncompromising style and bags of kudos are just part of the furniture.

Hotel Omm - Barcelona In a city which is filled with superb design and brilliant, contemporary architecture it’s easy to fall within the category of ‘ordinary’ in Barcelona. This is especially true for the city’s hotels, the number of which has mushroomed in the last decade thanks to Barcelona’s seemingly incessant appeal for both leisure and corporate travellers. With such fierce competition the only trouble can be deciding which one of literally hundreds of hotels to choose from. If sleek lines, modern interiors, a Michelin star or two and some avant-garde architecture are what you are looking for, then look no further than the Hotel Omm. Ok we admit that the name does sound rather like a line Patsy would utter, (post yogi audience) in Ab Fab, but that is the only thing even slightly pseudo cool about this boutique gem. Situated just off Paseo de Grácia in the heart of Barcelona’s Art Deco district the Omm stands amongst some of the city’s most illustrious architecture, but the hotels modern facade has already become quite the landmark in the city. Hotel Omm continues the Barcelona tradition of sleek modern design by architect Juli Capella and interior designers Sandra Tarruella and Isabel López. With just 59 rooms the Omm is wildly successful restaurateur Rosa María Esteva’s first foray into the hotel world (at which she also excels). Opening in 2003 the main aim of this exclusive boutique property was the organisation of space, design, aesthetic comfort and warmth. The minimalist interior uses ample natural daylight to create a friendly but sleek atmosphere and the hotel has become a popular meeting place for Barcelona’s it crowd. The hotel’s restaurant, Moo is run by the Roca brothers whose 2 Michelin stars courtesy of their Girona restaurant are evident in a menu that includes saffron-spiced scorpion fish with garlic, and veal with anchovies. The bedrooms are equally streamlined and stylish providing tranquil havens of relaxation. Head for the rooftop pool area and you are rewarded with some of the finest views of Gaudi’s rooftops on Paseo de Grácia just around the corner.

The Santa Teresa’s is also closer than any other five-star hotel to Rio’s major tourist site including Sugarloaf Mountain, the historical centre and the Tijuca Forest. Sympathetically renovated the Santa Teresa hotel manages to preserve the buildings unique colonial heritage, including the beautiful facade while incorporating elegant natural materials with modern design and the latest technology. Tropical woods, black limestone clad bathrooms, burnt cement floors and Portuguese tiles compliments the furniture and art from famous local artists and designers that complete the unique and original decor. This innovative South American design runs throughout all of the Hotel’s 44 rooms and suites, the restaurant, lounge, spa and pool areas to create a wonderful mosaic that showcases the diversity and multi-cultural influences of Brazil. Venture outside at the Santa Teresa on to the patios for a cool cocktail and some amazing views of Rio de Janeiro Bay. The tropical gardens are filled with palm trees, jasmine and century old Mangos which you will probably be sharing with visiting toucans, parrots and monkeys. Lazing the day away by the green slate swimming pool is hard to resist, the Spa by Natura though may just be tempting enough to lure sun worshippers away for more relaxing treatments and therapeutic remedies. When you have finished revitalising the soul, the body can be nourished at the excellent Térèze Restaurant. This stylish yet relaxed venue serves sumptuous international cuisine bought to Brazil by Executive Chef Damien Montecer who previously gained experience in New York, London and Cannes before returning to Brazil. His inspiring mix of Asian and Mediterranean influences on exceptional local produce provides a wonderful array of colours, textures, aromas and tastes from across the world. Those looking for a sophisticated and charming hotel that has its guests total well-being in mind need look no further than the hotel Santa Teresa. www.santateresahotel.com

LONDON THEATRELAND

The West End stage in the early part of 2010 looks set to be dominated by three very distinctly different musicals. Andrew Lloyd Webber returns with his long awaited follow-up to The Phantom Of the Opera called Love Never Dies and the Broadway productions of Legally Blonde and Hair transfer in, the latter featuring the entire Broadway cast. Love Never Dies was announced recently with a fanfare in London witht he world media being gathered to meet the two leads Ramin Karimloo (London’s current Phantom) and Sierra Boggess, hot from playing The Little Mermaid on Broadway. Set ten years after the conclusion of Phantom, Love Never Dies sees the Phantom ensconsed in New York’s Coney Island. This looks like being another lush romantic score from Lloyd Webber in a production directed by award winning Hairspray director Jack O’Brien. For theatre lovers the temptation to take in a Phantom double bill on a weekend in London will

be enormous and ticket sales for both are sure to be heavy so make sure you book ahead. Karimloo looks set to be a knockout Phantom so don’t leave it to the last minute. About to start previews is the musical based on the film Legally Blonde. As perky and frothy as you can get this fun night out is headed by former pop heart throb Duncan James. There are very few changes to the film at all as this young talented cast sing and dance their way through this bouncy score. Sheridan Smith looks set to be a great Elle and is joined by former timelord Peter Davison as Callahan. April 2010, sees the season start of the complete Broadway transfer of Hair. Cameron Mackintosh is bringing the multi award winning production to London. Expect everything you remember about Hair and more. The length of run hasn’t yet been confirmed so make sure you get tickets for this one well in advance. Apart from these three newcomers,

there are plenty of shows still packing them in here. Beige recommends Sister Act, Priscilla, Jersey Boys and the current incarnation of Blood Brothers which sees Spice Girl Mel C in the lead role. Enjoy!!

The world’s finest and most prestigious resorts are now battling it out to attract gay winter sports fans with ever more elaborate and entertaining line ups of clubs, parties, events and après ski extravaganzas. We guide you down the slippery slope and take a look at just some of the best ski weeks that are taking place in Europe and North America this winter.

One of the beauties of joining a ski week is that no matter what your level of skiing or snowboarding, there will always be people of the same level that you can ski with. Complete beginners have the luxury of joining a group and making friends while learning in a fun and friendly environment. Intermediates and advanced skiers can join people of similar abilities for guided ski tours or just heading out together to explore the mountains with new found friends. So whether you have never been before, or you are a seasoned pro, there is a week to suit your taste and budget. We certainly think that a winter week spent in the mountains is an experience that once you try, you will certainly be back for more.

The Skiing

The Saalbach-Hinterglemm ski area is one of the biggest lift-linked resorts in Austria with 200km of runs that cater for all abilities. As with many other Austrian ski resorts the town is an attractive Alpine village with bags of charm, but it also combines the convenience of having excellent lift system and great piste maintenance of the larger French resorts too. The skiing in the resort is particularly suited to better intermediates although around 10% of the ski terrain is graded as advanced, most notably the area around the challenging Glemm Valley. The ski school in Saalbach-Hinterglemm provides excellent tuition for all abilities and beginners will also appreciate the fact that there are excellent nursery slopes. Other runs in the resort are perfect for those on their second or third weeks, or perhaps even those who progress quickly. Boarders are also well catered for in the resort with 2 snow parks, a half pipe and 13kms of runs marked for boarders only. The children’s facilities are centred in the neighbouring village of Hinterglemm which is geared much more towards families than adult orientated Saalbach. The ski area in Saalbaach-Hinterglemm covers both sides of the valley with an excellent mix of sunny south facing slopes and shady north facing runs to choose from. Five main peaks are serviced from the base of the valley rising to over 2,000 metres which means over 1km of vertical drop from almost everywhere in the ski area. 61 marked pistes served by a modern system of 55 lifts provides access to this impressive ski area where the longest run stretches for 7kms. There is also a massive network of 384 snow cannons ensuring that conditions for skiing in the resort are always maintained at an optimum. A high-speed six-seat chairlift links Hinterglemm to Saalbach, which runs parallel to the valley where the village of Leogang is set in a natural basin.

The Resort

Saalbach-Hinterglemm is well known for the variety and the fun of its après-ski and nightlife, so much so that the resort is well known as a party destination for people from all over Europe including Dutch, Brits, Scandinavians and Germans who flock here. Saalbach is the epicentre of the resort’s après ski activity and the considerable Alpine charm of the village is added to by the fact that the village is completely car free. The traditional village buildings are overshadowed by the church’s custardyellow steeple and the beautiful mountain backdrop makes this a very picturesque resort. The village itself is home to a large number of bars and clubs and of all the villages in the ski area is by far the liveliest. There are also a large number of traditional mountain lodges on the slopes where long lunches and soaking up the sun are, if not compulsory, pretty hard to resist for all but the most avid skiers. Overall, Saalbach-Hinterglemm blends Alpine charm, great skiing and fun après-ski in what is one of Austria’s top ski destinations. At just 60 miles from Salzburg airport resort transfer times can be less than an hour and a half from the airport too. 74 | beigetravel | issue 2

For 7 days and nights in March 2010 the resort of Saalbach is ready to host the first ever Euro Ski Pride, and thanks to unprecedented support from the Austrian tourist board this is gearing up to be one of the must do events of 2010. Euro Ski Pride has been given a huge amount of access to the resort of Saalbach from the Austrian Tourist Board which will enable the event to almost take over the village for the week. During the week of parties there is also permission for 3 large scale outside dance sessions/ parties at the Mid-station and Top-station of the main resort mountain. Permission has also been granted for an outside ‘Main Stage’ event which will also double as both an après dance session and for the pool parties. Amongst the acts, artists, DJ’s and performers already confirmed include Boy George - experience live! who will be performing a special ‘An Audience With’ evening. There’s also DJ Phil Romano (Italy) - (Rapido Holland / Brussels / Tel Aviv / Rome Italy / Amsterdam). Joining Phil is DJ Rick Parker resident and favourite on Canal Street Manchester. Further artists are yet to be confirmed.

Tuesday it’s the turn of Amour après ski party to sooth you into another night’s entertainment. This time it is the turn of local hotel and bar Eva who will be hosting a pool party. Wednesday and the après ski action takes place at altitude as Up Rise is hosted at the top-Station of the main Schattberg Mountain in Saalbach. This is the second and largest of the outside après ski dance extravaganzas. The evening will see the Boy George experience performing some of the most iconic tracks from the 80s supported by DJ Rick Parker. Thursday’s après ski event will be the second beach party of the week, this time the venue is the nursery slopes of Saalbach which will be followed by some high octane fun, the toboggan run for those that feel up to it that is. Friday and the main stage will be the centre of the last nights activities. Live DJs and performers will be the main attractions for the finale along with fireworks and a very special headline act to top off what a ski week to remember.

On arrival mingle and meet other guests at the welcome cocktails where information about the whole week can be found. It’s a great excuse to have a drink on the house and get into the mood for the official opening party, Snowballs and Snowgirls. Canal Street resident Rick Parker will be kicking off the proceedings with his very own special blend of Funky Vocal and Electric Dirty House mixes to get everyone in the mood. For those that arrive too late for the first night’s opening soirees welcome cocktails will also precede the second night’s Sinful Sunday party. Monday 22nd March sees the first of the weeks outside parties which takes place at the Mid-Station of the main Shattburg Mountain in Saalbach. Djs Phil Romano and Rick Parker will be providing the sounds as the sun sets over the Valley Of Dreams, an unforgettable après ski experience. AROSA GAY SKI WEEK

Switzerland. 9-16 January 2010. The pretty ski resort of Arosa is situated at the top of the beautiful Schanfigg Valley in the Swiss Alps, Arosa is a winter resort that caters for everyone rather than just skiers and boarders. This pretty little town is popular with a wealthy yet unpretentious crowd who come here to enjoy this charming village that packs in loads of Alpine charm and a traditional Swiss atmosphere. Sitting at an altitude of 1,800 metres the snow record of the resort is generally very good, particularly in January when Arosa’s gay ski week takes place. There is a small but efficient lift system in the resort serving 70kms of pistes up to a very respectable altitude of 2,653 metres. The variety of runs in the resort favours mainly beginners and intermediates with experts having to make do with a handful of black runs and limited off-piste when the snow conditions are right. There are several hotels to choose from although most people choose to stay at the Eden Hotel which hosts many of the events including welcome cocktails. The fun continues throughout the week on and off the slopes including guided mountain skiing, après ski entertainment and the official closing party to end proceedings. www.arosa-gayskiweek.com

ASPEN GAY SKI WEEK

Aspen, Colorado, USA. 17-24 January 2010 Aspen is home to the original gay and lesbian ski week which has now been running in this great American ski resort for 33 years in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. The resort has a reputation as being one of the most upmarket ski resorts in the world which is true at peak times attracting both the wealthy and the famous to its slopes. This doesn’t mean that people on a lower budget cannot enjoy the charms of this beautifully restored Victorian town which has a superb snow record. Aspen includes 4 mountains in its pass, Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands, Buttermilk and Snowmass which combine for over 200kms of runs to suit just about all abilities. The 4 areas are separate but linked by a very efficient bus system which runs the 12 miles between Aspen (boarders are banned here but extremely well catered for in other areas) and Snowmass, which has the largest vertical drop in the US at 1,342m. As well as world class ski facilities and 4 excellent resorts Aspen’s ski week hosts one of the best programmes for everyone to enjoy. As well as guided ski and snowboarding in that famous champagne powder, superb instruction and fun on mountain events there’s also a great range of après ski, parties, entertainment, comedy and music laid on too. www.gayskiweek.com

WINTER PRIDE

WHISTLER, CANADA. 1-8 MARCH 2010 With over 81,00 skiable acres of terrain Whistler-Blackcomb is the largest ski area in North America and has consistently been voted quite rightly as one of the best too. As well as having one of the most efficient ski lift systems in the world and superb resort facilities Whistler-Blackcomb has also benefitted from upgraded facilities thanks to the 2010 winter Olympics which will be hosted in nearby Vancouver. Whistler will itself host all of the Nordic, Sliding and Downhill events. The 2 mountains of Whistler and Blackcomb provide one of the most varied winter playgrounds in the world with challenging off-piste areas, perfectly groomed motorway pistes and plenty of parks and half pipes to keep boarders and free style skiers in their elements. This year Winter Pride comes of age and celebrates its 18 birthday returning with a packed programme of events and entertainment to enjoy both on and off of the slopes which will run between the Olympic and Paralympic winter games. The resort of Whistler also has one of the most enviable selection of accommodation too, with top class hotels, lodges and self catering apartments for you to get the most out of your big mountain get away. www.gaywhistler.com 76 | beigetravel | issue 2

Telluride Gay Ski Week

Telluride, Colorado, USA. 20-27 February 2010. Telluride started life as a mining town and with prospectors flocking to this remote valley in search of gold and silver and it was also here that Butch Cassidy embarked on his celebrated career as a bank robber. Over one hundred years later Telluride has reinvented itself as a purpose built upscale ski resort yet still retains all of the Victorian charm of a frontier outpost. Telluride’s location has never been an easy place to get to but the majestic scenery, excellent snow conditions and phenomenal terrain make this one of the world’s most sought-after ski locations. The skiing here is well known as favouring experts with large areas of open bowl skiing and a vertical drop of nearly 1,000 metres. Intermediates will also find a good variety of well groomed pistes to keep them occupied and for beginners the tamer slopes of Mountain Village are the place to head for. In keeping with the exclusive atmosphere of the resort Telluride’s gay and lesbian ski week focuses more on upmarket events and entertainment. The excellent restaurants and shopping in the resort are showcased with fine dining and a fundraising fashion show, there’s a Ball in the resorts newest hotel ball as well as some chic après ski entertainment. www.telluridegayskiweek.com

European Gay Ski Week

Tignes, France. 20-27 March 2010. Once again the European Gay Ski week returns to the French resort of Tignes set high in the Savoie region of France. As with many French ski resorts built during the 1960s Tignes is severely lacking in Alpine charm, however it does make up for this with the huge variety of skiing available. Linked with Val D’Isere these two resorts combine to make up the Espace Killy with 300kms of marked piste spread over the two resorts. In Tignes itself the highest lift serves the top of the impressive Grande Motte glacier and at 3,400 metres high this represents some of the most snow sure conditions in Europe. There is a huge variety of skiing in Tignes and although the vast majority caters for intermediates there is also plenty of scope for beginners and some runs that will challenge even the most advanced skiers. Once again there is a variety of accommodation available for the event from self catering apartments to 4 star hotels. The European gay ski week will also be hosting plenty of parties and après ski events from some of the biggest club names from across Europe including Trade and La Demence. For discounted access to all parties and events, plus other discounts and special offers the event pass can be purchased before the event which guarantees access to all paid parties and happenings throughout the week. www.manmountain.co.uk

Gay Snow Happening

Solden, Austria, 20-27 March 2010. Celebrating an impressive 11th successive year in 2010 the beautiful Tyrolean town of Solden once again welcomes back over 400 ski aficionados from all over Europe to enjoy one of Austria’s finest Alpine resorts. Solden has a reputation as having one off the most lively bar scenes in the Alps, and when we were there for last year’s Gay Snow Happening, there certainly wasn’t any holding back on the après ski entertainment. The local tourist office has been extremely supportive of Solden’s gay snow happening in recent years and the many bars, clubs and restaurants in the town fully participate in making this a great event for everyone concerned. As good as the après ski is in Solden it isn’t overshadowed by the skiing available in the resort, which covers a large area and is extremely varied. Starting at 1,300 metres in the town the lift system takes skiers to an altitude of 3,250 skiers and with nearly 2kms of vertical drop in the resort this is a great ski area to explore. Most of the skiing takes place however above 2,000 metres, ensuring good quality snow well into the season. Add to this the extensive skiing on the Rettenbach and Tiefenbach Glaciers and Solden makes not only a great resort for skiing, but also for a great ski week experience. beigetravel | issue 2 | 77
