Women’s Art Project

Chocolate Seasons 2016

Curator: Georgiy Brailovskiy Museum of Sculpture and Decorative-Applied Art Wing of Kyiv National Museum of Russian Art

Georgiy Brailovskiy curator of Women’s Art Project, collector, founder of In-Art For a long time, museum curators and collectors hardly paid attention to female artists. Nowadays women with major exhibitions and record prices play centre stage on the art scene, which previously was dominated by only men. “A fantastic result”, says Philip Duke von Württemberg (Philipp Herzog von Wurttemberg), the head of the European branch of Sotheby`s auction house about the sale of picture of Rosemarie Trockel for over $5 million. “This reflects the increasing tendency for more and more female artists to come out of the shadow of men”. The history of women’s art counts a hundred years or so – a tiny period of time when compared with the general history of humanity. Art is not something exclusive at the struggle of women for equal rights with men. Women were not admitted to higher education institutions, were not permitted to practice medicine, did not participate in political life: their fate was homemaking, in the best case, literary readings in the salons and dances at balls. Soviet avant-garde radically decided women’s issues; ‘Amazons of avant-garde’ ceased to be simply muses and became active participants in the art process. Then there was a prolonged period of socialist realism, in which the feminine trend in art diminished. A strong stance was taken by the men, though they used the image of the amazons that has already been established: their paintings depict great women with a spatula, in headscarves and trousers caked in plaster. At the same time in the Western feminist art, a new formulation of the question about the role of women in art and society appears. Feminists did a lot for the restoration of historical justice. Thanks to their efforts, the work of female artists who had held relatively marginal positions in the 40s and 50s are now at the center of critical art discourse. In the 50s and 60s the names of women in the history of art practically did not figure. In 1962 there was a “History of Art” American critic Janson (H.W. Janson), in which there was no mention of any women artists. The situation changed dramatically in the 70 years with the emergence of the West course of radical feminism. We can only add to this the fact that in the famous Uffizi Gallery in Florence, where 1700 self-portraits of artists reside in, only 7% of them are women. One of the important phenomena that have appeared because of the feminist art was a new ornamentality and decorativeness movement. In the late 70s and early 80s with the efforts of some artists of both genders, decorative art, which was considered marginal in the context of the first modernist minimalist movement, began being recognised as a ‘fine art’, i.e. high art. The processes in Ukraine are similar to those faced by almost all post-Soviet republics. On the one hand, the only academics of the Academy of Arts of the USSR were two persons in Ukraine – Sergiy Grigoriev and Tetyana Yablonska. Formal equality, if not to take into account that all the artists at that time were forced to carry out the social order of the country and we can talk quite conditionally about purely women’s view in art or feminist issues. In the years of independence the situation in the country has changed quite strongly. The first program works of Marina Skugareva back in the 80s initially identified a number of issues that the artist set himself. And here again we can recall the women’s view, women’s rendering, their vision of aesthetics and the pursuance of decorative effect. For the first time ever Marina has used embroidery on her paintings. Today, this technique is frequently used in the works of other artists. Trends of recent years show that the new generation of Ukrainian female artists actively seize their place in the history of modern art from men. In autumn of 2015 the performance of Mariya Kulikovska became a notable event in London Saatсhi Gallery at the exhibition, where it was nominated by Ukraine in the category of sculpture. Nina Murashkina represented our country in China in the international Biennale in Shanghai in 2015. Graphic artist Olesya Dzhurayeva has already in 2016 won the prestigious international competition of graphic painters in Brussels. All of it testifies the fact that in our country female artists are perceived on par with their male counterparts and that creativity of each female artist is evaluated primarily through their creative work rather than on gender.

Iurii Vakulenko General Director of Kyiv National Museum of Russian Art Ladies and gentlemen, Obviously, the division between men and women in the art world is quite conditional. However, the art created by women often features a special vision of the world - a more subtle, aesthetic view with soulful intonation of expression. In my opinion, a “women’s line” in Ukrainian art is defined extremely brightly and powerfully. Mariya Bashkyrtseva, Mariya Pryimachenko, Catherine Bilokur, Tetyana Yablonska, Alla Horska – this is not a complete list of names of prominent compatriots who created boundless universes on their canvases – nationalistic and at the same time, immense, universal, deep. The “Women’s Art Project” in the Chocolate House that brought in prominent Ukrainian women painters, sculptors and graphic artists, is interesting, above all, as an attempt to gather in one space the most interesting contemporary female artists. First of all, those who are looking for answers to today’s challenges speak the modern language and implement themselves actively in various spheres of culture. This is a synthetic project that unites in the artistic dialogue different names and different genres of art under one roof. By means of this project we are launching a series of art events – “Chocolate seasons”, that are intended to present Ukrainian contemporary art in all its various manifestations

The Women’s Art Project was conceived so that the viewer could get acquainted with the works of our wellknown female artists, while appreciating the high level of their professional skills and the uniqueness of each of them as a creative person. Almost the entire history of art is connected with the names of outstanding male artists; now we show that this inequality was artificial, and that it was due solely to the fact that women in society were not allowed either in education, politics or art. By creating such a project, we were clearly aware that we touch on a very interesting topic that is sometimes ambiguously perceived, sometimes one-sidedly interpreted. And if the number of questions that are raised by our exhibition does not frighten us, then we definitely want to avoid the biased perception of art from female artists. Therefore, several well-known male artists have appeared in the project. If we say that the woman in her way looks at the world, then how does a man look at the same picture? People in different locations and at different times always vary in their statements. And what if they are always next to each other? Therefore, it seemed very interesting to us to include two creative couples in the project: Marina Skugareva and Oleg Tistol; and Emma and Ruslan Tremba. Always together, always next to each other and always recognizable in their creative work, the artists of different generations will present their works. It remains to the viewer to appreciate how differently each of these artists in the creative unions formulate their vision of the world around us, whether the woman is always emotional and sensual, and a man is pragmatic and rational. We consider similarly interesting the participation in the project of an art photographer Ihor Babii (VarrIng) with selected photos from the collection Fire Embodied. The uniqueness of his project lies in the fact that by using special techniques of reportage photography, he reveals the character of a woman as the creator of material images from fire. The images, which appear out of nowhere and disappear in a moment, reflect the emotional state of a female juggler who turns into a goddess in a fiery dance. This work is created only by means of the camera and is visible in the photos. The male art photographer perceives the fire element and the woman in his own way, through the prism of his own sensations. Therefore, we found it very interesting to show these photos in the general Women’s project. In the process of creating a ‘fire project’, we saw at one point and at the same time the art of man and woman; when a woman creates, the man perceives and records.

Collection FIRE EMBODIED (2012) - 02/44 Photo project FIRE EMBODIED is a collection of photos, taken in 2012 at the Center of culture and history of Ancient Rus during international festivals: “Bylyny (epic) of Ancient Kyiv of IX-XI century “and” Guests of Ancient Kiev of the XV century”. Since the appearance of man on earth, the fire has a mystical value. Living in Ancient Rus in the first millennium AD, the Baltic and Eastern Slavs (ancestors of Ukrainians and some European peoples) worshiped the God named Svarozich, personified in fire. For thousands years fire symbolizes good and evil at the same time Fire-show, which was the culmination of the international festivals, was a historical and mystical event for visitors. The photos display moments of transformation of man into the god, lord of fire. Flame signs and figures on the photographs symbolize the victory of good over evil. Looking at the photos, the audience can participate in this victory, touch it and feel the power of positive energy boost from the depth of the centuries. 98

Special Project Self-knowledge 113

In about 1930s during his trip to Paris Francis Bacon saw a book about the mouth cavity deseases - and ever since those times the pharynx as an organ personifying and substituting a human, his pains and pleasures at the same time, has hypnotised his forever... Mouth in the history of modern art has been playing a role by no means the least important - it is an undisputable sexual fetish and an existentual symbol at a time. One may have a short guided tour of “mouthmania” from symbolists, Moonk’s “Yell” via flared out bottomless jaws of Picasso, portrait of May West by Dali up to pop-art in classical - Wesselman, Rosenquist - and neo-version. Here we see soft red silicon everywhere - it embodies total sexualisation of pop culture and dispersing of lust, selling it in consumer society - in direct and indirect sense. Advertising -by whose guileless strategies of deception pop-art is aspired - indeed offers us possessing not products, but desires, fantasms... Rapacious, bleeding with red lipstick and saliva pop-art feminine ‘Mouths’ in Lina Kondes’ works are capable of produsing an impression on anybody - that’s a bit of a fantasms generator. Having seen it once you can hardly forget it - the artist frankly provokes the viewer. Scarlet lip stick is the most sexual of all cosmetic inventions, and it influences equally irresistably both - bulls and men. It is one of the brightest signs of sex and seduction. There also exist in Kondes ‘ works gothic, black lips - those are for seekers of thrills. The artist allows herelf irony and mockery at this means of manipulating the stronger sex - crossing the line of “too much” - too much of agressive

114

colour, too much of passion. An undisputable object of men’s desires is “separated” from a woman and becomes a certain, functioning independently ,lustful organism, , associated with the main hero of the film “Alien” - due to the amount of slime. It is by no means a secret, that from the psychological point of view mouth and lips are a substitute of female genital organs. It’s just that it’s not appropriate to speak out loud about it. Hence this odd сraving of women to enlarge their volume, enlarging by this one’s own “price”. The artist is determined to speak about these odd stereotypes of consumering sex and sexual consumering ironically and absolutely without any offence meant. In her bronze sculpture between woman’s legs one can see a widely opened mouth... In Kondes’ works there is quite a lot of mockery over the things men consider of prime importance for themselves - functioning of their genitalia and conneced with that power over women. A mouth between legs is an adequate answer to men’s sexism, which is , by the way, also an instrument of power and domineering. On Kondes’s canvases we may see, on the background of scarlet lips, striving to devour somebody, we see fussily copulating little men, reminding us of Keith Hurring’s pictograms or funny sex- itstructions from the toilet design. Return to the pictographic language of the primitive communal art is by no means accidental. Like scarlet lip stick, it depersonalises a person, makes it part of a crowd, of a general mass of consumers of pop-art, living exclusively by basic instincts. So the circle closes up, scarlet lips find their “ particular audience”. Victoria Burlaka 115

Zinaїda Lihacheva Bborn in 1975, Kyiv, Ukraine Education National Academy of Arts of Ukraine (Theory and History of Art), 2012-Present National University of Taras Shevchenko (Postgraduate Diploma in Psychology), 2007-2009 National University of Trade and Economics (BA in Banking), 1993-2002

As part of the framework of the Women’s Art Project Zinaïda Lihacheva presents a video work, which carries radical research the taboo theme of feminine frailty and dependence. Using a video-portrait allows the artist to talk about issues such as addiction and self-destruction. Thanks to the versatility of the medium, the viewers attention focuses on the untold story of women’s drug use and despair. The work was developed from looking into survey data, according to which about 10 000 women took drugs in Kiev in 2012. At present out of the 1 500 0000 drug addicts in Ukraine, every fifth is a woman (95% under the age of 16-30). The artist turns to the reasons that push women to use narcotic substances and the consequences of this. As a result they may be capable of a multitude of actions and deeds that lead to destruction, hopelessness and despair. These experiences, as well as the underlying causes, the artist leaves unsaid, thus creating a silent portrait that appeals to the viewer’s face. 116
