The item was found floating in high sea by a boat out fishing and brought to the harbour of Lampedusa island.
Device aimed at functioning as a floating device in absence of lifevests. The materials and shape suggest the tweaking of a tra ditional fishing net, easily available on the Lybian coasts due to the prevalent use of old fishing boats as migrant vessels.

A
wicker frame
hand woven structure, reminds of traditional fishing nets used in the Mediterranean sea.
B
plastic bladder
A clear plastic bag has been reshaped to fit inside the frame. It is supposed to have been designed to turn old fish ing nets, commonly found on Lybian coasts, into emergency floating devices. Use of lifevests is in fact very rare on clandestine migrants vessels
C
wooden cap
A cap has been fixed to seal the bladder and make it easily inflatable.

DESCRIPTION
Tiny island in the middle of the Mediterranean sea, thanks to its geographical position (it is the souther point of Europe) it has become famous at the “gateaway to Europe”. Migrant boats leaving Tunisia and Lybia target either Lampedusa or Malta to get access to the EU.

DESCRIPTION
Illegal migration has in the Mediterranean sea a very popular route. Either leaving Morocco to Spain, Lybia to Italy or Turkey to Greece, the system remains the same. Old fishing boats are usually the preferred mean of transportation, being coastal cities all traditionally devoted to the fishing industry. Migrants pay thousands of euros/dollars to embark on crumbling overcrowded vessels, often bnot fitted with enough oil to complete the journey. They expect to be intercepted by another vessel being a private one or a patrol boat belonging to a Europian state - before getting lost, drifting or even sinking.

DESCRIPTION
Typology of “cage” net traditionally made of natural fibres woven by hand. The kind of fibre, size and shape can change according to the area of provenance, together with the size of the mesh created and the kind of fish which is expected to be caught. Despite not being the most efficient fishing technique - as a cage it is left in the sea at night and collected in the morning - it is still pretty popular for small scale artisanal fishing fleets.
