KHMER VILLA

Residential Building

Participant(s) Duration

16 Weeks (March 1st to June 20th 2021)

SITE ANALYSIS PART TWO

DESIGN CONCEPT

Objective Students are expected to design, draft, and physically model the house which fit the given requirements. Requirement(s) • The client is a local family of 7 (both grandparents, both parents, a daughter, and two sons) plus two maids and a chauffeur • The location is to be decided with the total land area of approximately 2400sqm; the total housing area must not exceed 600sqm • The house is set to be two stories high with a moderate number of rooms and size

With three teams members, we have divided the project into a few smaller one as seen on the right. Start with site analysis, we need to find a suitable location for the client. We then can start looking around for inspirations and ideas for the overall concept. Drafting plans come next on the list, which consists of floor plans, elevation plans, master plan, section plans, and detail plans. Finally, the model can be built using the plans and virtual model. PART ONE

SITE ANALYSIS Our final location is set in Sangkat Chak Angre Krom, Khan Mean Chey, Phnom Penh. It is located 11km away from the capital, such that the traffic and noise level is at a moderate state, yet easy access to the inner part of the city. We then can collect the hard data and various information about the region that is relevant to the project. I was tasked with a graphical presentation creation of the data we’ve collected. With limited tools, I used OpenStreetMap to ease the map visualization process a bit. For the hard data to be easily presentable, I use CAD Mapper to extract the map of the area into SketchUp. It also comes with the contour data, but the deviation is so tiny that it is negligible. For the graph, World Weather Online provides its images in SVG format, which is easy to format and modify.

PART TWO

DESIGN CONCEPT

We want to create a design that is fitted to the overall theme of the project, a Khmer villa for the family. Since our location does lack historical and cultural context, we only need to create a design with a certain Khmer aesthetic. We’ve noticed that the Khmer script, which evolves numerous times and periods, is still has a resemblance to its prior shape, so it’s must have a certain characteristic that is Khmer. I was, once again, tasked with a graphical presentation creation of the concept we’ve formed. I mostly used SketchUp for the concept development of the house and master plan since its style builder is great help for visualizing without sacrifice times and computing resources. The diagrams for various connections of the area are made in PowerPoint.

PART THREE

2D DRAFTING The drafting step is important since it solidified the concepts into functional products. This step has taken the most of time for the project and it is rightfully so. The design concept is sometimes incompatible with real-world design, so we need more time for any solutions and workaround ideas. I used AutoCAD for drafting the plans. The visual format and symbols used are based on United States National CAD standard and 30x40 Design Workshop.

PART FOUR

VILLA MODEL

Making it into a physical model is the final part of this project. It’s to showcase the design of the house with real-world lighting and materials, plus a look into the problem which we could overlook beforehand. Even though I having had much input in this part, I was able to direct the team for the house and roof construction so that the 2d drafting earlier could accurately display in 3d form.

KOEUNG HOUSE

Housing Documentation

Participant(s)

Duration 12 Weeks (November 23th 2020 to February 13th 2021) Objective Students are expected to survey on various ancient and traditional Khmer house, then compile the data in form of a research book and drafting plans. The type of house for the survey and research are selected by lucky draw. Our team got to work on Koeung house, a similar yet different house from a more commonly known Khmer house. We can only find these houses in the northwest region of the country, in Battambang province. We planed a short trip to Battambang to do just that. the owner of the house was kind enough to tour around the house, explaining and answer questions. Although the time was short, we had a great time and come to appreciate the history of our timber house and the stories it held. With the data collected, the plans and various isometrical drafts were made in AutoCAD. Software(s)

“THE ONLY ONE” SKETCH Pointillism Sketch

Duration

1 Week (November 2nd to 9th 2020)

Objective Students are expected to create an original sketch that is “only one“, only exist in their sketch and nowhere else, using only points.

The form is a direct inspiration from the hand; each finger combined to create a new lifeform that the world has never seen before. Using my hand as a reference, I started a rough sketch on how the form would be like in the final version, adding various parts of other animals to make it more “lifelike“. Only then I would start to recreate them from a collection of points.

ANOMALOCARIS CANADENSIS The Stylization of Bionic Form

Duration

1 Week (June 15th to 21th 2021)

Objective

Students are expected to make a transformation of any living creatures into the elements of the architecture by draw/sketch the original form, then develop the concept with any kind of technique.

For this project, instead of going at common lifeforms that are currently living on earth, I want to try something different. For a while, I was fascinating with the concept of “Cambrian explosion“, a period in time in which it is the time when most of the animals suddenly appear in the fossil record. I choose Anomalocaris Canadensis, “Abnormal Shrimp”, a shrimp-like animal that lived around half a billion years ago. The paint was done roughly in Photoshop.

CROISQUE ET COLEURS Sketches and Colors Class

Duration 16 Weeks (October 12th 2020 to January 31st 2021) Objective

Students are expected to learn about the basic of sketch and color theories, including perspective sketch and watercolor paintings.

I like the idea of sketching and coloring; it was something I thought I could do it well right away. I was wrong, some of the time. This class taught me some lessons that I can apply for myself, the idea of imperfection. I learned to not punish me for making mistakes and instead, learning from such mistakes, or even improvise that said mistakes as well.

Duration 16 Weeks (October 12th 2020 to January 31st 2021) Objective

Students are expected to learn about the basic of sketch and color theories, including perspective sketch and watercolor paintings.

Learning these shapes and ornaments has been a fun experience for me. Even though I haven’t spent much time, I’ve learned to has much respect toward anyone who persues it. I love how every curve has an explanation for how it comes to be and will be.

THE TWISTED FRUSTUM Paper Form Sculpture

Duration

1 Week (June 8th 14th 2021)

Objective

Students are expected to create a form mostly from paper (80%), then taking a fine image for submission.

For this assessment, I want to explore something that is visually simplistic, yet deformed into an abstract abyss that defies its prior form. Frustum is a Latin word that means piece cut off. It is normally the portion of a cone or pyramid between one or two parallel planes cutting it. The form is geometrically simple and stable, thus I begin with it. I start with the pyramidal frustum and twist them 180 degrees. I then finish it off with the unusual sitting position, which should provoke an eerie visual and a sense of unease.”

THE STACKING BOXES Habitat 67’s Poster

Duration

1 Week (March 16th to 22th 2021)

Objective

Students are expected to create a poster for the A3 size paper about interesting architectural structures/buildings.

This is an A3 size poster of Habitat 67, a housing complex in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. It was one of the most recognizable modular buildings, an architectural experiment on the urban living system since 1967. I want to create a poster that stays true to the buildings’ unique characteristics. Instead of generic infographic poster, I aimed for more. The poster consists of 3 columns of “stacking boxes”, a rounded rectangle to make the blocks feel more grounded. Each section is rounded by a similar dash stroke, a grouping tool. All photographs are misaligned and have a frame to indicate that it’s real and set on top of the design. All theme and color scheme is inspired by expo 67 advertisement, a world fair held in Montreal, 1967.

MEET THE ARCHITECT Moshe Safdie’s Poster

Duration

1 Week (March 23st to 29th 2021)

Objective

Students are expected to create a poster for A4 size paper surrounding their favorite architect.

This is a A4 size poster about Moshe Safdie, one of the most influential and inspiring architect of the last 20th and early 21st century. A follow-up poster from the last one, most of the design elements are taken from there, while shrinking down to fit a new dimension.

KONCHAB UI MOCKUP

Idea Pitching Competition

Duration

for November 13th to 22th 2020

Objective All participants are expected to pitch ideas as product or service that uses technology to solve problems, and create a poster that showcases that idea. I observed that young Cambodians knowledge about sex education is still lacking because of the limited curriculums, teachers, and parents couldn’t explaining the factors of sexual risk, thus it has become one of the major obstacle for youth development. Mainstreaming young people‘s awareness of sexual health issues openly is necessary to be able to solve the problem. KonChab is a program designed to fit what young people want to use and share. I want KonChab to raise young people’s awareness and improve attitudes related to sexual and reproductive health issues.
