10 Green Tips For a Healthier, Safer and Greener Lifestyle Eat organic and locally grown foods.

Bring Your Own Bag.

On a typical day spent doing errands, you probably come home with more than 10 plastic bags and either throw them in the trash or use them to hold trash. Plastic bags pile up in landfills, cover the streets, clog drains and gutters, and are even linked to disease. Using reusable bags is the smartest way to shop. Many stores offer rewards for bringing in your own bags (money off your purchase, store gift cards, etc.). You can find cute, stylish reusable totes at most stores at a cheap price!

Reduce Your Speed.

Want to save money and fuel? According to FuelEconomy.gov, “each 5 mph you drive over 60 mph is like paying an additional $0.24 per gallon for gas.” Slowing down on the road also allows you to plan ahead for a safer and smarter commute.

Go For A Ride.

Cut down greenhouse gas emissions as well as your gas bills by using your bike for transportation. Many cities provide bike lanes and trails to make bike riding safe and easy. You can also save money on a gym membership with the added exercise! 2 III Bel Bambini Going Green in Spring

Their quality food uses less processing and shipping, which means you reduce your carbon footprint. The added benefits? Not only do you get fresher and tastier food than found in supermakets, but it’s also good for your local economy by helping family farmers stay in business. To find your local farmer’s market visit: www.localharvest.org

Eco-Friendly Eats.

Looking for a way to dine green? Try someplace new for dinner and visit dinegreen.com to browse more than 300 restaurants certified by the Green Restaurant Association (GRA), a national non-profit organization that requires them to meet environmental guidelines including implementing a full-scale recycling program and remaining Styrofoam free. In order to stay certified, they must also make four eco-conscious improvements each year, such as buying more locally grown foods or switching to nontoxic cleaners. Find a Green Restaurant in your area, make a reservation and help the environment!

Air-Dry Laundry.

The clothes dryer is the second biggest energy user after the refrigerator. Over-drying clothes can end up being costly. An electric drying operating an extra 15 minutes a load can cost you up to $34 a year in wasted energy. The most energy-efficient way to dry clothes is hanging them either outside or inside to dry. You can use a folding indoor rack all year long. When using the dryer, clear the lint filter after each load and dry only full loads of clothes.

Use Aluminum Water Bottles.

Did you know it takes 26 bottles of water to produce the plastic container for a one-liter bottle of water, a process that pollutes 25 liters of groundwater? Cancel those plastic water bottle deliveries, save money and stop buying bottled water for reusable water bottles made from materials that are not likely to degrade over time like stainless steel or aluminum. If you choose a plastic water bottle, check the number on the bottom first: Plastics numbered 3, 6 and 7 could pose a health threat to you, so look for plastics numbered 1, 2, 4 or 5.

Lower the Temp. in Your Fridge.

The refrigerator is the biggest energyguzzling appliance in the kitchen, making up more than 10 to 15 percent of the average home energy bill each month. Save money and energy by setting the refrigerator thermostat to maintain a temperature between 38 and 42 degrees (F). Your food will stay fresh while saving electricity.

Unplug Those Chargers.

When not in use, don’t leave anything plugged into the outlets. Not only will this save electricity, it will reduce your electricity bill too.

Go Outdoors!

Gather your family and hold a picnic in the park. Add a nice twist by taking an hour to pick up garbage and make the park cleaner for all to enjoy.

Mommy Corner Cloth Versus Disposable diapers. It’s the old argument that has ecoconscious mothers everywhere debating which is the more environmentally friendly option. Disposable diapers do make up a huge part of the garbage we dump in our nation’s landfills every year. On the other hand, washing cloth diapers raises concerns about using excess amounts of energy, water and harsh detergents that pollutes the nation’s waters. This environmental debate is not so clear-cut, but we love The Honest Company’s premium plant-based disposable diapers that are naturally biodegradable and 100 percent non-toxic. Finally, there’s a disposable diaper that “green” moms everywhere will love! Learn more about their Honest Diapers Bundle other eco-friendly baby products at www.honest.com. Found at www.honest.com

HOME: GREEN NURSERY DESIGN III By Anjali Talim, Bel Bambini Design Director

GIVE YOUR BABY THE BEST …An eco-friendly safe haven! Considering that babies

spend the first several months of their life sleeping an average of 16 to 17 hours per day in their nursery, the choice of furnishings is of utmost importance to their health. Babies are especially vulnerable to harmful toxins as their lungs are still developing after they are born. Incorporate these useful green tips to limit your baby’s exposure and create a green nursery. Your baby gratefully requests the following:

BEAUTIFUL FORMALDEHYDEFREE FURNITURE Shop for non-toxic furniture made from solid wood, preferably sustainable wood. Avoid furniture made from plywood, particleboard and fiberboard because they contain adhesives with formaldehyde, which can cause serious health problems…especially in newborns. If you choose to refinish a piece of furniture yourself, be sure to use healthy non-toxic laminates or non-toxic paints as pointed out in our next tip.

ZERO-VOC PAINT PLEASE VOC (volatile organic compounds) are chemical compounds that actually vaporize into the air and then we end up breathing them in. They can cause a variety of health and environmental problems. It is best to use non-toxic paints…there are many brands today that carry low and even zero-VOC paints!

NATURAL MATERIALS FOR MY FLOORING Hard flooring is always best in baby nurseries as it will not trap as much dirt, dust and allergens as wall to wall carpet. Synthetic carpets contain the same harmful VOC’s found in paint, so it is best to use carpets and area rugs made from natural fibers, such as wool, organic cotton, sisal, etc.

MY COZY & CHEMICAL FREE MATTRESS Traditional mattresses have vinyl covers made from PVC, which is considered one of the most toxic plastics. Look for breathable mattresses that have natural and organic materials. There are even non-toxic mattresses on the market that are waterproof!

ONLY SAFE TOYS FOR ME Old fashioned wooden toys and organic cotton plush toys are the way to go. Babies put everything in their mouths, so when it comes to toys…go as natural as possible. One great homemade tip for a teething toy is an organic cotton wash cloth that you just dampen, twist and toss in the freezer. Your baby will love the texture and the cold temperature will soothe swollen gums. Bel Bambini Going Green in Spring III 5

HOME: GREEN NURSERY DESIGN III

PURIFY MY AIR This is an essential item that is often forgotten when planning for a nursery. Air purifiers capture 99% of microscopic airborne allergens from the air including household dust, pollen, mold spores, cooking smoke, pet dander, etc. You will thank your lucky stars that you put this in your nursery!

LIGHT IT UP RIGHT Be sure to install energy saving lights and light bulbs. You can even get night lights with energy saving bulbs now. Also, setting up lighting on a timer or sensor is a great idea as a night light on a sensor can save a ton of energy! Now that you have all of the tips and information‌Do what is best for the health of your baby and the planet by creating your dream nursery in an environmentally friendly manner!
