Greetings,
It is my honor to serve as the 2018 – 2022 Basileus of the Gamma Mu Omega Chapter. In 1941, our chartering members laid a foundation for my predecessors -- some of the most dynamic women in our community -- whom I respect and admire. I am proud to join this group of outstanding women in continuing to build upon GMO's legacy of service in the Greater Daytona Beach Area. Our theme, “A Legacy Destined for Greatness through Exemplifying Excellence through Sustainable Service,” is a clear indication that we are committed to service in the Greater Daytona Beach Area and Volusia County. With God’s blessing and your commitment to our chartering members' vision, we too will continue serving families, young women, and children for another 80 years. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.’s International Program theme, “Exemplifying Excellence through Sustainable Service,” Program Targets include: Target 1 - HBCU For Life: A Call to Action, Target 2 - Women’s Healthcare and Wellness, Target 3 - Building Your Economic Legacy, Target 4 - The Arts! and Target 5 – Global Impact. As stated by our International President, Dr. Glenda Glover, this is more than a theme. It is our call to Action. It is our call to Service. Little did we know that in 2020, COVID-19 would bring our theme to life. The time is now, the needs are great, and the opportunities are plentiful. Being the great chapter that we are, Gamma Mu Omega has accepted the challenge and was able to pivot and implement impactful programming activities under the guidance of our Outstanding Program and Target Chairs. My team’s priority is to add value to your membership by responding to your interests, goals, and aspirations as we continue the legacy that was established 80 years ago. In order to ensure that we meet your expectations, in July 2022, we will begin reviewing and dissecting our Strategic Plan. I highly encourage you to get engaged with your committees and share your ideas to ensure that we have your input in shaping the future of our chapter. We will continue to collaborate with our external partners to guarantee that the needs of our communities are heard, understood, and met. Together, we speak with a strong voice and pledge to be of Service to ALL Mankind! Again, thank you for this opportunity to serve as your Basileus for 2018-2022. With Sisterly Love,
Ida Wright Soror Ida Wright, Basileus 3

Target I: HBCU for Life: A Call to Action Alpha Kappa Alpha will continue its focus on education with an emphasis on historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). Chapters will promote and market historically black colleges and universities and encourage students to attend HBCUs as a sustainability measure. Activities will include researching and publishing information regarding prominent Alpha Kappa Alpha women and other notable individuals who attended HBCUs. Recognizing that HBCU funding is one of the primary obstacles that threaten the long-term growth and survival of HBCUs, members will be encouraged to financially support HBCUs. Alpha Kappa Alpha will implement an AKA HBCU Endowment Initiative in partnership with EAF, in which an endowed scholarship will be established at each accredited four-year HBCU. The goal is to stamp the Alpha Kappa Alpha brand of financial support on each HBCU campus to help students remain in school, complete their course of study, and receive their college degrees.
Signature Program: #CAPSM Alpha Kappa Alpha will assist students as they seek admission to college by providing guidance and support in completing the application and enrollment process through the 2018-2022 Signature Program, #CAPSM, which is short for College Admissions Process. Too many African American high school students lack the basic support needed to navigate through the college admission process. Through #CAPSM , chapters will partner with local high schools and youth groups to bridge the gap between high school and college by demystifying the college application and enrollment process. This educational initiative will extend to all colleges and universities, both HBCUs and non-HBCUs.
#CAPSM is a step-by-step approach to facilitate college admissions from researching various institutions and submitting applications through completion of the enrollment process. Chapters will assist students in completing college applications, preparing for the ACT and SAT, writing compelling personal statements, identifying scholarships and other financial aid, and compiling a portfolio to track college admissions results. Through #CAPSM , Alpha Kappa Alpha will improve the trajectory of the lives of talented young people by increasing their potential for success and laying the foundation for positive, productive and fulfilling lives.

Target II: Women's Healthcare and Wellness Alpha Kappa Alpha will continue to raise community awareness of critical health issues impacting African American women. The primary focuses will be breast cancer awareness and prevention, heart health, nutrition and wellness, and care for the caregivers. Breast Cancer Awareness and Prevention will focus specifically on early detection through mammograms to improve the survival rate of women diagnosed with breast cancer. Alpha Kappa Alpha will own a digital AKA Mobile Breast Cancer Screening Unit that will travel to various locations and provide mammogram screening. Chapters will partner with local clinics, rural health centers, and hospitals to emphasize the need for African American women to receive regular mammograms.
Heart Health remains a focus as the sorority enhances its commitment to healthy hearts through fitness activities and walking. Chapters will be encouraged to form walking clubs and to invite the community to join the walking initiatives. Nutrition and Wellness will emphasize healthy lifestyles including prenatal, childhood, adult, and senior nutrition programs. The focus will be on structured nutrition initiatives, and chapters will partner with local nutritionists and dietitians to design healthy eating plans and safe diets for longer, healthier living. Care for the Caregivers places emphasis on taking care of those who take care of others. Chapters will emphasize the need for caregivers to practice preventive healthcare as well as selfcare behavior to eliminate the vulnerabilities and risks associated with the stress of caregiving.
Target III: Building Your Economic Legacy Alpha Kappa Alpha will emphasize financial planning, asset accumulation, and wealth building including savings and investment, managing debt, and improving credit. Personal Financial Planning and Asset Accumulation. Financial Freedom Legacy Workshops will be conducted in partnership with local certified financial planners who will share information on saving, investing, and retirement planning. Chapters will train community residents on ways to perform financial assessments to achieve their financial goals. Credit Repair and Monitoring. This initiative will focus on ways to repair credit and improve credit scores; including how to check for inaccurate or outdated information, and how to protect against both identity theft and unauthorized credit history use. Entrepreneurship and The Black Dollar 365. This initiative will highlight and promote successful African-American owned businesses with an aim toward spawning new entrepreneurial ventures in our communities by encouraging intentional support and leveraging the power of the black dollar 365 days a year. Operation AKA Assist. This initiative will focus on implementing programs to assist those in need in various communities by directing attention to the plight of the homeless, including homeless children and homeless veterans. Chapters will partner with or adopt a shelter, transitional home, or organization that provides assistance to these needy populations. 25
Target IV: The Arts! Alpha Kappa Alpha will expose students to arts enrichment and culture by focusing on visual and performing arts and by showcasing talent through the exploration of writers, entertainers and various other artists.
Salute to the Harlem Renaissance will be launched to celebrate the contributions of African American artists during the Harlem Renaissance through student research and chapter sponsorship of student talent showcases. This initiative will be correlated with HBCUs and African American culture and will include colleges with art collections. The Salute to the Black Arts Movement will be unveiled and will focus on student research and celebration of African American artists during the Black Arts Movement. Chapters will champion activities that express the movement's message and highlight members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority who served as leaders and participants. Activities will include art events, poetry slams, dancing, painting and performing arts.
Target V: Global Impact Alpha Kappa Alpha will engage in programming designed to enhance the international footprint of the sorority. National Global Impact Day. Chapters will engage in a community service project that has an international impact and will partner with organizations that make a difference worldwide.
Global Assistance Activities. Chapters will engage in global partnerships that provide assistance to the underserved in international areas populated with people of color. These partnerships include the following: •
•
•
Soles 4 Souls. Chapters will collect gently-worn shoes and transport the shoes to specified locations. Soles 4 Souls, a non-profit organization, will process and ship the shoes to destinations around the world that are populated with people of color. Lions Club International. Chapters will participate in an eyeglass initiative designed to prevent blindness, help restore eyesight, and improve eye health and eye care for millions of people around the world by donating used eyeglasses in partnership with local Lions Clubs. Pillowcase Project. Chapters will continue to use pillowcases to make dresses for little girls and will expand the sorority's efforts to include shirts for little boys. The pillowcase dresses and shirts will be sent to Haiti to provide clothing for children in need.
Refugees in America Assistance Program (RAAP). Chapters will focus on refugees of color in the United States by partnering with organizations engaged in support activities that assist refugees and their families to integrate into American life. This includes literacy classes, educational training, and other necessary transitional support.
26
Community Impact Days Alpha Kappa Alpha members will implement International Community Service Days annually to highlight the organization's collective impact in program target areas:
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service (January)
Pink Goes Red for Heart Health Day (February)
AKA Global Impact Day (April)
AKA International Day of Prayer (August)
AKA HBCU Day (September)

HISTORY OF
ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA SORORITY, INCORPORATED® Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority was founded on January 15, 1908 at Howard University, Washington, D.C. when nine women exchanged ideas and pooled suggestions to form a sorority. These women included: Beulah Burke, Lillie Burke, Ethel Hedgeman, Margaret Flagg Holmes, Marjorie Hill, Lucy Stowe, Marie Woolfolk Taylor, Anna Easter Brown and Lavinia Norman. The first president of the group was Lucy Stowe. In the fall semester of 1908, Ethel Hedgeman was elected president of the group. In order to continue the organization, seven sophomore women were invited to join without being initiated. They were: Joanna Berry, Norma Boyd, Ethel Jones, Sarah Merriweather, Alice Murray, Carrie Snowden and Harriet Terry. In later years, all sixteen women were recognized as "founders". In the fall of 1912, some members wanted to change the name, motto, colors and symbols of the sorority. Through Nellie Quander's efforts, this was not done. The dissatisfied members withdrew to form another organization. In an effort to protect and preserve the sorority, plans were made for Alpha Kappa Alpha to become a national body. So, on January 29, 1913, Alpha Kappa Alpha was incorporated. Thus, Alpha Kappa Alpha became not only the first sorority organized in America by Black women, but the first to be incorporated. The first national meeting, or Boule, was held in December 1918 at Howard University. Nellie Quander was elected the first Supreme Basileus of Alpha Kappa Alpha. At first, the Boule was held each year. Since 1962, the Boule is held every other year during the summer.
The classes of Alpha Kappa Alpha members are undergraduate, graduate, general, associate, life and honorary. Members are affiliated with chapters which reflect their college experience. The oldest undergraduate chapter is Alpha, located at Howard University and established in 1908. The oldest graduate chapter is Alpha Omega, located in Cleveland, Ohio, which was established in 1913. Early programs were cultural in nature. As time passed, Alpha Kappa Alpha experienced a gradual but significant widening of its program activities. Program goals for Alpha Kappa Alpha have continued to study the changing needs of minority women and tries to improve them. Presently, the National Office (housed in a sorority-owned building) is located in Chicago, Illinois. So, you see, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® is a repository for richer friendships, a bond of love, and a force of goodwill which assists women who are seeking a better life.

ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA SORORITY INCORPORATED ®,
GAMMA MU OMEGA CHAPTER History
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® in 1908, became America’s first Greek-letter organization established by Black women, with roots dating back to Howard University, Washington, D.C., where the idea for formation was visualized by Ethel Hedgemon Lyle of St. Louis, Missouri. ,
As a result of this incorporation, 33 years later, on December 14, 1941, six distinguished women, including Mildred Peterson, Joyce Engram, Phannye Huger, Marion Lancaster, Nadine Ferrell, and Angie Douglas, chartered the first graduate chapter among AfricanAmerican Greek-lettered organizations established in Volusia County, specifically in Daytona Beach, Florida. Throughout the last 80 years, thirty-one (31) professional, committed and zealous women have served as Presidents of Gamma Mu Omega Chapter, all trailblazers in their own right. Presidents of Gamma Mu Omega Chapter, listed in succession, are as follows: Mildred Peterson, Charlotte F. Clark, Larzette G. Hale, Dufferin Harris, Florence L. Roane, LeRosa H. Smith, Joyce Engram, Edith Starke, Nadine Ferrell, Isabelle Ambrose, Clarice Biggins, Theresa Gainous, Gladys M. Green, Buford Moore, Ann Dismuke Taylor Green, Jessie Jackson Childs, Julia Griggs, Myra Miiddleton Valentine, Joneva Loper, Jennifer Thomas, Mae Frances Davis, Sandra Williams Anderson, Shelia Davis Jackson, Belinda Williams-Collins and Tracia Culver. Some have served subsequent terms. Ida Duncan Wright currently serves as the 31st President. Gamma Mu Omega Chapter established Gamma Tau Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® an undergraduate chapter located on the campus of Bethune-Cookman University, on April 30, 1949, and was also instrumental in the chartering of two Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® graduate chapters, Tau Chi Omega Chapter, located in DeLand, Florida and Chi Delta Omega Chapter, located in Palm Coast, Florida. ,
Gamma Mu Omega Chapter, for the past 80 years, has demonstrated its sensitivity and commitment to community needs through the involvement of its members in a multiplicity of projects and programs including, but not limited to, the following: Junior Artists’ Recitals, Fashionetta, Ebony Fashion Fair, Men of Tomorrow Program, Debutante Cotillion Program, Accent on Youth Program, Adopt A-Child Program and Take the Elderly to Lunch Program. Gamma Mu Omega Chapter has undertaken other projects that include providing coats, food and socks to the homeless through Halifax Urban Ministries and providing coats and toys to young children through the Breakfast with Santa Program. The Chapter has partnered with other agencies such as the Council On Aging (COA), volunteering in the Meals on Wheels Program; and has made contributions to the Rose Marie Bryon Children’s Center for the delivery of Thanksgiving Baskets to local residents, to the United Way, Incorporated for stocking the Second Harvest Food Bank shelves with peanut butter and jelly, and various other community agencies to sponsor financial wellness clinics.
36
Gamma Mu Omega Chapter has participated in Alzheimer’s Walks, donated personal hygiene supplies, seasonal wraps and toiletries to victims of domestic violence, recognized “Unsung Heroes” (seniors who have made significant contributions to the community), and partnered with Campbell Middle School, Bonner Elementary School, Palm Terrace Elementary School and Bethune-Cookman University in many student-centered activities. The Chapter has also donated hundreds of dresses to the Little Dresses for Africa Project, an AKA International Program. Gamma Mu Omega Chapter’s target programs were greatly impacted by the COVID-19 Pandemic, prohibiting face to face contact. As a result, the Chapter has diligently used innovative strategies designed to advance the mission of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®. Programs held through virtual technology, social media and other public awareness tools include the 2020 Virtual Debutante Cotillion Program; #CAP (College Admissions Process) for high school juniors and seniors; “Wear A Mask” campaign with the message, “Wear A Mask for Community Health” which stressed the importance of wearing a mask to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19 and that message was displayed on a billboard located on International Speedway Boulevard; “EntrepreneuHERship” 102, a virtual event featuring local women entrepreneurs who shared their experiences in establishing their own businesses; and a public meeting for candidates vying for local, county and state offices. Other activities included Soles4Souls (donation of new and slightly used shoes for women, men and children); financial contribution to God’s Bathhouse of Volusia County for basic hygiene items and clothing for the needy; support of the Summer Reading Program for students in grades K-5 by collecting books spotlighting the Harlem Renaissance and the Arts; provided hundreds of backpacks to middle school students in Volusia County Public Schools; breast cancer awareness; and other initiatives too numerous to mention. Gamma Mu Omega Chapter has awarded thousands in dollars in scholarships to deserving high school students, and has made numerous financial contributions to other national and community programs, which include the United Negro College Fund, BethuneCookman University, Rose Marie Children’s Center, Dickerson Library, American Cancer Society, Sickle Cell Association, Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Committee, Mary McLeod Bethune Foundation and Statue Project, Juneteenth Committee, and the Children’s Home Society. Over its 80-year history, Gamma Mu Omega Chapter has diligently answered the call of the motto of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, which strongly emphasizes and concomitantly demonstrates “In Service to All Mankind” through its devoted members.
