Holiday Home Safety Tips H

appy Holidays! It’s the most wonderful time of the year, which sometimes makes us forget about the safety hazards that come along with decorating and festivities. The following are a few tips to remember this holiday season:

Keep breakable items out of the reach of children. Poinsettias are known to be poisonous to humans and animals, so keep them well out of reach or avoid having them at all. Also watch your children and pets around tinsel, ribbon and ornaments, all of which can be choking hazards.

1. Always turn off holiday lights when you leave the house or when going to bed. The lights could short out and start a fire. Test your smoke alarms monthly to make sure they work. Consider investing in an alarm system if you will be traveling during the holidays. 2. Inspect holiday light strings each year and discard any with frayed cords or loose connections. When replacing bulbs, unplug the light string and be sure to match voltage and wattage to the original bulb.

6. Do not use your gas fireplace if the glass panel is removed, cracked, or broken. Only allow a qualified technician to replace these parts. Check to see if the flue is open before burning a wood fire and do not burn wrapping paper in your fireplace.

3. When purchasing lights, check labels to see which ones are certified for indoor and outdoor use. Plug all outdoor electric decorations into circuits with ground-fault circuit interrupters. When hanging outdoor lights, use insulated tape or plastic clips to hold them in place. Never connect more than one extension cord together. Use a single cord that is long enough to reach the outlet without stretching, but not so long that it can get easily tangled.

7. To help prevent carbon monoxide hazards in your home, have a qualified heating contractor perform a yearly maintenance check of your furnace and venting system, and clean or replace your furnace filter frequently during the heating seasons. Hopefully, these tips will help you and your family be a litter safer this holiday season! We wish you an enjoyable holiday season in your new home!
