If you have been waiting for the perfect time to sell your home, now may be that time! The market has shifted from a buyers market to a sellers market. This means there is a higher demand for homes to buy than the number of homes on the market. Maricopa Properties is happy to discuss the value of your home in this shifting market. If you owe more than your current home is worth, Maricopa Properties can also help you understand the differences between a short sale and foreclosure.

Zona: What are your favorite sports to play? Joey: Basketball is my all time favorite! Because I am good at it and it’s a fun way to run around with friends. Zona: What are your favorite sports to watch? Joey: Football. Zona: What are your favorite teams? Joey: The Packers! I got to go see them at the Super Bowl in Texas in 2011. It was so cool!!! Zona: What are your favorite video games? What are the highest levels you have gotten to in those video games? Joey: New Super Mario Bros. 2 and Lego Batman 2. I beat both of the games! I got them the day they came out and played them all day. Zona: You play the drums. What is your favorite song to play? Joey: I am just learning now. I have not played a full song yet. Zona: Do you want to be in a band? Who is your favorite drummer? Joey: Maybe, but not full time. I want to be a video game creator/designer. Hard to say, I like anyone who plays the drums. Everyone has such different styles. It’s fun to watch. ZONA: You like Harry Potter. What is your favorite movie? Joey: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. It’s the best because thats when Harry gets to fight Voldemort. And he wins!! From the 1st movie you are waiting for that to happen and it finally does. It’s the best! It was a long movie but the time goes by so fast you don’t even realize it because it’s so good and so much is happening. ZONA: You recently went to Universal Studios and Disneyworld. What was your fave ride at Universal? Fave at Disneyworld? Joey: The Forbidden Journey Harry Potter Ride. Thunder Mountain! I rode it 4 times! ZONA: Which one is betterUniversal or Disneyworld? Why? Joey: Universal. The rides are more exciting at Universal. Much bigger and faster roller coasters for older kids. Lots of the rides are about movies, so if you haven’t seen the movie it is not as fun. But if you saw the movie, it feels like you are there in it.

Juliet: Bars are most fun because I get to be up very high and swing all around. I also like doing backwards flips. ZONA: Who is your favorite gymnast? Why? Juliet: Mrs. K. She is my gymnastics teacher and a lot of fun! She teaches me how to do everything. ZONA: You love animals. What kinds of pets do you have and what are their names? ZONA: What is your favorite animal? If you could be any animal, what would you want to be? Juliet: Dogs. I would want to be a dog. I think dogs are very cute and loved by most people. They get to play and run around lots too. I like to give my dogs lots of treats and if I were a dog I would get lots of treats. ZONA: Your mom calls you a “Dare Devil”. What makes you a “Dare Devil”? When you get scared, what gives you confidence? Juliet: I like to do things that are high or fast. Roller coasters, go-carts and rock climbing. I believe in myself. What do you love about dance? What is your favorite type of dance? Alyssa: I love dance! The reason I love dance is because you can let all your energy out in dance and you will always have a rhythm. My favorite kind of dance is Hip Hop. I have actually dance at the Arizona Diamondbacks on the field. Zona: What is your favorite movie? Alyssa: My favorite movie is Freaky Friday. Zona: What is your favorite book? Alyssa: My favorite book would probably be The Kid in the Red Jacket. ZONA: What are your top 4 favorite songs right now? Alyssa: When I grow up I kinda want to be a firefighter because I had a house fire and I don’t want other people having the same thing that happened to my house. Zona: If you could meet any famous person, who would you want to meet? What would you want to do with that person for the day? ALyssa: If I could meet anybody famous, I would want to meet Katy Perry because I love all of her music. I watched her movie and I’d like to see how her life is.
Trey Watkins • 2nd Grader Liberty Arts Academy Zona: What is your teachers name and what is your favorite thing about her? Trey: Mrs. C. She is nice, fun and a happy person. What was your favorite thing about the exhibit? Trey: It was so cool! There were a lot of different fish. I got to see and touch a sting ray. Zona: What is the coolest thing that you learned about sharks? Trey: We need great white sharks because they eat smaller fish and without them smaller fish would grow too big and mess up the fish population. ZONA: If you could be any type of shark for a day, which shark would you want to be? Why? Trey: Great White, because I could rule the whole ocean for one day. ZONA: What is your fave movie? Fave X Box game? Fave restaurant? Trey: Transformers Dark of the Moon. Mine Craft and Transformers. China City.
TJ Vernam • 1st Grader Liberty Arts Academy Zona: What grade are you in? Who is your teacher? What do you love about attending Liberty? TJ: I am in 1st grade. My teacher is Ms. Doering. Tj: My favorite Monster Truck is Grave Digger because he is awesome. Zona: Have you ever been to Monster Jam? What was it like? Tj: Yes, it is loud, fast, crazy, the drivers make noise, donuts, and you get to scream. Zona: Would you ever want to drive a Monster Truck? Which one would you want to drive? Do you think it would be hard to drive one? Why? How many cars do you think you could jump if you were driving a Monster Truck? Tj: I would love to drive a Monster Truck, I would drive Grave Digger, Maximum Destruction, and Blue Thunder, I think it would be crazy to drive one because they are awesome and huge, I think I could jump 15 cars and win the race. ZONA: If you could create your own Monster Truck what would it look like? What would its name be? TJ: My Monster Truck would have green and black flames against a red truck with flashing lights underneath the truck, it would have huge wheels with gold rims, I would name it The Flamer.

Xavier Spiritline Brings Hope for
Breast Cancer
Zona: How did you become involved with City of Hope? Megan: The Xavier Spiritline Cheer coaches Monica Gaspar, Heather Carder, and Stephanie Walsh, are all graduates of Xavier College Prep and also former Spiritline members. The coaches, together with the Xavier administration, strongly encourage each team to serve the community. Both the coaches and girls unanimously agreed to join the search for a treatment and a cure for breast cancer. We all felt so passionate about the cause – all having had personal experience with friends and mothers who have fought their own battle with breast cancer. City of Hope gives us a direct and meaningful way to make a difference in searching for treatments and a cure for breast cancer. Zona: What types of fundraising events have you and the Xavier cheer squad held for City of Hope? Megan: Xavier Spiritline supports the City of Hope organization by walking in the annual Walk for Hope fundraiser. Our team reaches out to private and public sponsors in the community to increase awareness and raise money for the cause. Zona: How much money have you raised for City of Hope? Megan: Xavier Spiritline raises thousands of dollars for City of Hope. This year, with the help of my family, I secured a contribution of $2,500 from BHHS Legacy Foundation. I’d like to personally thank BHHS Legacy CEO Gerald L. Wissink for his and the Board’s support for City of Hope. Zona: What makes you continue to work so hard for this charity? What does it mean to you to help City of Hope? Megan: I have felt the pain of watching someone that I care about suffer with breast cancer. We can accomplish more as a team than we can as a set of individuals. Xavier Spiritline competes as a team and has won as a team. As a Spiritline member, I’ve been part of State and National championship teams, and I have seen first hand how much a team can accomplish when they work together. Zona: If you could tell Zona readers one thing that they could do to help City ofHope, what would it be? Megan: If each reader could go to www.CityOfHope.org and make a donation, no matter what they can afford, then we can really make a difference in the lives of real people. Zona: How long have you been cheering for? Megan: I started cheering for a team when I was in the 6th grade. ZONA: What do you love about your cheer squad? What makes you the best team? Megan: I love the bonding between the team members. When I started Xavier College Prep most of the students that I already knew were other cheerleaders. Being part of a team helped me feel like I was part of the Xavier community, even before I took my first class at Xavier. Our team is the best because we have many highly-talented cheerleaders and gymnasts from around the valley. Our coaches support us to be all that we can be through our intense practice schedules. When these pieces of our team are put together, it produces amazing results. ZONA: What are your goals for City of Hope for this year? What are your goals for your cheer squad for this year? Megan: Our team hopes to surpass our goal of raising $5,000 this year for City of Hope. Our cheer goals include repeating as Arizona State Champions and then National Champions in California. We are also cheering on the Brophy College Prep Football team in hopes they will once again win the state championship title for high school football.

Mesa Prep Students Dish About Sports, School Work & Their Personal Inspirations! Ana Aragon • Junior at Mesa Preparatory Academy zona: What type of awards, if any, have you ever received for volleyball? ana: As a freshman and sophomore I won the Iron Athlete Award which athletes get when they play three or more sports while maintaining a 3.0+ GPA. I have also earned the Iron Athlete Award Earned Class 1A 1st Team Volleyball Award, All CAA 2nd Team Volleyball Award, and 1A East Conference 1st Team Volleyball Libero Award. zona: How long have you been playing Volleyball? How many hours do you spend playing Volleyball? ana: I have been playing volleyball since I was a freshman. I loved the sport right off the bat but I never started to dedicate lots of time to it until sophomore year when we won the CAA State Championship. Over the summer, I went to three volleyball camps at ASU, Red Mountain, and Mesa Prep. The ASU camp went from 8am8pm for three days, the Red Mountain camp was 8am-12pm for a week, and the Mesa Prep camp was for two and a half hours for a week. And that all doesn’t include the time I spent practicing and playing with friends. Now that the season has started we practice two hours, Monday- Friday, except on game days. It’s such a blast! I love my team! zona: What position do you play? Do you prefer a certain position to another? ana: I play libero which is an all-time back row player. I enjoy being libero because I am always on court and it is one of my strengths. I have always been a better defensive player than I have been offensive and I love how it feels when I pass an incredible hit that everyone thought would be a kill. Everyone on my side of the court is just like “Oh yeahhhh” and our opponents looking at us like “Oh no you didn’t” and I’m just chillin’ there looking like “Oh yeah I did”. It’s great! zona: What do you think it takes to be a great volleyball player? ana: To be a great volleyball player you have to be loud, confident, and smart. Volleyball is “a game of runs” as my coach says. It’s easy to get ahead and to be left behind so you constantly have to try hard to stay on top. It is also hard to remember that sometimes and it is easy to get discouraged when you look at the score. That’s when loudness and confidence kick in. Also, volleyball is a great sport where a strategically placed tip can be just as effective as a power spike. zona: Would you rather serve the ball or spike the ball? ana: I would rather serve the ball then spike it because I love that feeling you get when you serve the ball and as soon as you hit it you know it’s an ace. Also, you aren’t dependent on the setter because you get to toss your own ball. zona: Besides volleyball, what do you like to do
10
In the Zona!
in your spare time? ana: I read a lot when I’m home and am a sucker for good ol’ chick flicks. The rollercoaster ride you experience when watching one is the best! One second you’re blubbering like a whale and the next you feel like you have a six pack from all the laughing. I also love hanging out with friends and being active. We always end up going to the recreational center, walking to the park, swimming, hiking, hula hooping, dancing or playing basketball. But to tell the truth, anything I do with my friends is fun. We can seriously just be lying down in my room and be having the time of our lives. That’s why I love them! zona: What is your favorite TV show? Your favorite type of food? Favorite ride at Disneyland/world? ana: My favorite TV show is Modern Family. The father figure in it reminds me so much of my father who is a complete goof and same with the younger brother whose manipulative skills are identical to my younger sibling’s. My favorite ride at Disneyland is by far Splash Mountain! It can never seem to get old! Like honestly, I’ve been on that ride at least a hundred times and I always have as much fun as I did the first time. Plus, the picture that gets taken on the way down is always hilarious. Man, do people make the weirdest faces! My favorite food… That is, by far, the hardest question yet. I just love food in general. Other than volleyball, eating is my second official past time. Haha! I have to say though that my favorite food that I never get sick of is carne asada tacos with tomato juice and guacamole. Typical Mexican dish, yeah I know but that doesn’t make it any less delish! zona: What things do you do at home or outside of school? Do you have brothers and/or sisters? ana: Outside of school, I volunteer at my church with the Catechism for junior high students every week. They are always so crazy and odd… So I fit in perfectly! Haha! Just kidding! With my friends, we started a Bible study group so that is always something I look forward to. It’s like a mini seminar except that I don’t get in trouble for forgetting to call someone Mr. or Ms. Blank. I have two brothers – Jorge, who just graduated, and Alex, who just started attending Mesa Prep. They are both super funny but in different ways. Jorge has a very subtle sense of humor whereas Alex is just that kid that you can’t help laughing at because he just trips over thin air or his pants rip while he bends over. zona: As a junior are you thinking about college yet? Any ideas as to where you want to go? Would you want to play Volleyball in college?
ana: I have to say that “thinking” is an understatement. I’m flipping out over here! Haha! I am not sure about where I want to go yet but I definitely know what I’m looking for. I want a small school with morals and a strong family feeling, similar to Mesa Prep. It’s going to be a challenge finding a school that encompasses that but I’m not willing to settle for less. Absolutely, yes, I will play volleyball in college! Probably not on Varsity because I will be focusing on studies but I’ll join the intramural league. It would be a great way to stay in shape during school and meet people while doing what I love. It’s a win-win! zona: What makes Mesa Prep an awesome school? Do you have anything that you would like our readers to know about you or any shout-outs that you want to give? ana: School work can be a challenge sometimes and feel overwhelming but it is always worth the hard work in the long run. Assignments that I thought were pointless before seem to have greater meaning as time goes on. As I’ve gotten older and wiser – or so I like to think I have – I’ve realized that everything in Mesa Prep has a purpose and that everything I have been taught actually ties in together. They all encompass a greater truth. I know it may sound silly but you’ll understand later, I promise! Just stick to your studies and keep your priorities straight. I know it can be hard but that is why it is also helpful to have close friends who can point you in the right direction. I want to thank my four best friends who have always been there for me – Madison, Hannah, Alex, and Kelcie – and my family in Mesa Prep who has aided me in my quest for Truth, Beauty, and Goodness.
Cameron Labban • Junior at Mesa Preparatory Academy Zona: What makes Mesa Prep such a great school? cameron: Mesa Prep is such a great school because within its halls is a learning environment unparalleled to any school I’ve ever been to. It’s a place where knowledge is enjoyable, where the students are eager to challenge themselves, and where the teachers are so enthusiastic about what they teach. It’s hard to find places like this nowadays which is why I’m grateful to have the opportunity to attend this school. Zona: You’re a football player, what position do you play? cameron: I play wherever the team needs me to be, which right now is on defense and special teams. I start at Linebacker/Safety, Kick Returner, Punt Returner and Long Snapper. As for my favorite position I would choose Safety because it’s a great feeling to sit back and read the quarterback’s eyes, see where he’s throwing it, and then pick the ball off. Zona: Who is your favorite NFL team? NFL Player? What NFL team would you want to play for? cameron: My favorite NFL team would be the Cardinals; you have to root for the hometown team. My favorite NFL player is Ray Rice who plays Running Back for the Baltimore Ravens. He’s my favorite player because of his humble
attitude and his active stance in his community to stop bullying. If I could play for any team I would play for the Cardinals.. Zona: What is your jersey number? Any meaning in your jersey number? cameron: I wear #23, I chose this number after Brian Leonard who wore it when he played college ball at Rutgers, and he now plays in the NFL for the Cincinnati Bengals. He sacrificed his opportunity for the Heisman trophy when he elected to change positions from running back to fullback to block for Ray Rice. He made this decision for the betterment of the team and it paid off as they went 11-2 in one of the most successful seasons in school history. Every time I wear my jersey I remind myself of his selfless decision and do my best to represent what the game of football is about: Teamwork. Zona: If you could hang out with one person on a Saturday, dead or alive, make believe or real, who would it be and what would you guys do? cameron: I would choose my mom’s dad, (my grandfather) who I never got to know. He was an NYPD detective and seemed like a wonderful individual who would be great to become acquainted with and spend time with. Zona: You’re a Junior this year, are you thinking about college
“Every time I wear my jersey, I remind myself of Brian Leonard’s selfless decision, and do my best to represent what the game of football is about: Teamwork.” yet? Who is your dream college of attending? cameron: Yeah, I’ve been thinking about it for a while now, my dream college would be my father’s alma mater, Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Zona: Would you like to give a ZONA “shout out?” Go ahead and say anything you want for over 16,000 people to read. cameron: I would like to thank my parents for educating me and teaching me the values of hard work, being there when I need them and for supporting me. I would also like to thank my football coach, Amy Arnold, for helping to shape me into who I am today. I would not be where I am currently without these people and I am so thankful to have them be a part of my life.
Ben Dight • Senior at Mesa Preparatory Academy zona: What are your goals for your senior year? Where do you see yourself in 5 years? ben: I really want to finish my MPA experience at the top of my game. I also want to enjoy every second of senior year. I love my teachers, my friends, and the school in general and I’m going to miss it immensely when I leave. zona: Was there ever a time in your life when you thought about doing something else and quitting cross country, or is it what you were born to do? ben: There have been times when I have thought about doing other sports, for example when I was younger I used to play soccer. On the other hand I have always had really good friends running with me in cross country. Ever since my first year at MPA I have run cross country and I always thought it would be fun to be able to say that I ran cross country for 6 years through temperatures greater than 117. zona: You are a mentor, tell us about that? What is your favorite part about being a mentor? How did you get this role? ben: I really enjoy being a mentor. I get to make the new students’ transition to MPA as smooth and enjoyable as possible. I share my almost 6 years of experience at MPA with the new students to help them avoid the mistakes I made and to help them get through any new ones that they might encounter. It is really fun to watch them grow from an uncomfortable
new student to a well established “Mesa Prepian” (one who attends MPA) by the end of the year. I volunteered to be a mentor in 9th grade and have been one ever since. zona: You enjoy to travel, where have you traveled to? What has been your favorite place so far? ben: Traveling is in my blood and one can definitely see this in my Dad’s side of the family. My father was born in England and is one of 5 brothers; each of those brothers now lives in a different part of the world! I have one uncle who lives in Ireland, one who lives in Virginia, one who stayed in England, and finally one in Australia. I was born in England also and moved to Arizona when I was 4. I have gone to visit my uncle in Virginia in the past and recently just went to London. I hope at some point I can take a year and just travel. In my lifetime so far I have been all over England, to France, Canada, and to a fair amount of states with in the US. I love the idea of exploring new areas and diving into foreign cultures. I think it is a great idea for everyone to travel because it can, not only greatly broaden your idea of the world and those who live in it, but also help you yourself become a more, well rounded person. zona: Tell me about your love for music? Have you played in any bands? What instruments of you play? ben: I like to talk to people about this because I used to not really like music at all.
This continued a little into junior high when I was taking a music class in 7th grade. I was frustrated that I had to take the class because I felt like I would never use the skills I was learning in real life. Very shortly after, my friend and I began to take guitar lessons. This was the point at which my view of music completely changed from not really interested to completely obsessed. I immediately started to absorb everything I was taught and loved every second of it. I then started to create a small collection of guitars and began writing my own music. I have been in 3 musical groups. One of the groups I was in was a classic rock band where I played rhythm guitar and sang lead vocals. Then I joined a heavier rock band for a little while. Most recently I was part of a duo and we played all types of music from Classic rock to pop even some reggae.

ZONA: What is your favorite type of medium? GEORGIA: I’m always trying new types of art, so that’s a hard question! Probably photography though! ZONA: How many different types of art do you practice? GEORGIA: Well, I have my photography business, so that’s pretty constant, but over the years I’ve done pottery on the wheel, a lot of portrait work in charcoals and pastels, sewing, painting, and a lot of mixed media pieces. ZONA: How long have you been practicing art, is this something that you are going to be doing for a long time? GEORGIA: I’ve always loved art! One of my favorite things to do as a kid was to go to the art museum with my sketch pad and try to recreate famous pieces. I hope to be able to call myself an artist my whole life! No matter what career I decide to go into, art will always be my passion. ZONA: If you could spend one day with any artist dead or alive, who would it be? What would be one thing that you would want to talk about with him/her? GEORGIA: Steve McCurry the photojournalist. He’s famous for his photograph, “Afghan Girl.” He does an amazing job capturing people’s souls and experiences in his photos. I would just love to follow him around for a day! It would be really cool to watch him work. To be a photographer that captures the natural elements of people so well, you have to have great communication skills. He’s so talented. I’d love to learn by watching him. ZONA: What are your favorite types of things to photograph? GEORGIA: People, definitely. My favorite photos are from some of my mission trips down to Mexico. The kids that I work with while I’m there live in so much poverty. Their eyes have seen a lot, and their faces hold a lot of feelings. I also have met really amazing people while there, and it’s cool to photograph people who tell stories. The photos I take bring back emotion and memories for me, and I like when they can do that for someone else as well. ZONA: Which do you prefer art or photography? GEORGIA: I would say that photography is a form of art.

With Their New MS iPad Program, Tesseract School, Is Quickly Becoming The Most Innovative School in the Valley For this interview, ZONA sat down with four fifth grade students–Mary Jane, Sophia, Nick and Will–who are quickly becoming more immersed in the MS iPad Program, which is highly integrated into the 5th grade curriculum. Tesseract is all about being an innovative school, so a program like the MS iPad Program really hits home with young students. Tesseract is a student-centered school, meaning that their educators turn the class back to students for their input. They are not just a lecture school, which data shows is yesterday’s way of teaching, and their students retain more being in a student-centric learning environment.
Left: Maddie A. & Hannah I. work on school work on the iPad. Middle: Fifth graders Hannah I., Mary Jane M., Maddie A., Lauren B., Mikabella P. and Sophia P. learn and discuss on their iPad. Right: Sophia P. works on her “digital classroom” before discussing her answers with fellow classmates and educators.
Zona: How do you use the iPad in your classes? Mary Jane: We use our iPad for typing reports or when we have questions during warm-ups or ways; we also use them to discuss questions that our educators ask. Sophia: With our iPads, we pull info down from Fronter, our digital classroom, and then work on our answers together or individually before discussing our answers with our educators. It’s really an interesting way to work. Will: We are also using our iPads as our class organizer, which is our planner; we put our assignments and our schedules on the iPads. Nick: In music and band class we use our iPads to learn to play our instruments and hear what they sound like. Zona: Do you use you iPad to share files with your classmates and teachers? Sophia: Yes, we share files and our papers using Google Apps. Nick: We also share lots of interesting work like if we draw something on Comic Life, we can share it with our friends. Will: We also use them in music or dance class as a digital instrument.Mary Jane: Sharing fun projects and our work with classmates. Zona: Do you think the iPad is helping you to learn better than you would without one? Mary Jane: We’re still learning similar materials, but now it’s easier to keep track of our work and develop really good habits. Nick: I also like that we don’t waste as much paper. We are more enviornmentally friendly by using our iPads. Zona: Do you think your iPad makes school more interesting? Will: Everybody really likes using the iPad. It makes our lessons more interesting and different. The classes are the same, but we are able to work individually or collaboratively with our classmates. Sophia: Plus, our lockers are cleaner now since we started using the iPads. Everybody is more organized and we don’t ned to have several notebooks for each class. ZONA: How much of your school work is done on the iPad? Group: Between 85-95%. Zona: What is your favorite app to use on your iPad? Will: Garageband and Homerun. Mary Jane: Docs AS is really cool for presentations. Sophia: I like Comic Life for designing comics. Nick: Gravulous is an interesting science app using planets. I also like strategy games combined with learning. ZONA: Have you ever used an iPad before coming to Tesseract Middle School? Group: Yes. Mary Jane: But we are learning in another way, and it makes school even more interesting. We have lots of fun using our iPads, but we now incorporate that learning into fun using awesome technology.

Did You Know? Statistics show that 4.5 million (+) people are injured annually by dog attacks, and children make up 60% of these attacks, 30% of which are perpetrated by the family dog. Too often it is the lack of educating our children on dog safety and how to interact and treat our pets that lead to these misfortunate incidents. It is our goal to teach students to become actively involved and engaged in changing these statistics through education. We discuss and demonstrate common mistakes that are made when encountering strange dogs, which include maintaining proper spacing, keeping emotionally calm, as well as how to react and protect oneself if they are ever attacked. Our program is 30 to 45 minutes in length and is designed to be presented in small class settings. It has been adapted to meet the Common Core Standards for Life Science for K-4 students.
