StyleReport DOUBLE TAKE CITY BRUNCH TO COUNTRY BBQ STYLE By Mindy Gura and Paula Orlan

We’ve all heard the story about The City Mouse and The Country Mouse, two totally different characters with two very unique lifestyles. Well, that can be you too when going from a chic brunch in the city to a casual, summertime barbecue out in the country. You can wear the same maxi dress but accessorize it in different ways for two completely distinct vibes. Whether you are more of an uptown city girl or a down-to-earth country gal at heart, it’s time for you to embrace them both. A versatile piece like this flowy dress by Tolani makes it super easy.

Online Resources to Help You Create an Iconic Look By Dawn Allcot

Ten years ago, you might not have imagined ordering designer brand fashion essentials online. Today, not only can you buy top brands online— you can borrow and sell them, too. And if you’re overwhelmed by the options, an online fashion consultant can help. Before you can create an iconic look, it helps to define what that means for you. “An icon is someone who stands out. It is someone who combines a fashionforward look with an element of classicism,” says P.J. Gach, a New York-based fashion expert and reporter/ editor. “It’s about being true to your body type and having confidence in what you wear.” Fortunately, online resources make it easier than ever to be confident about your purchases. Here are BELLA’s top online fashion stops (in no particular order) as you put together an iconic look all your own.

26 THE SUMMER ISSUE

StitchFix.com One of the first online stylists of its kind, Stitch Fix makes finding fashionforward styles virtually a no-brainer. Answer a few questions, and the online stylist (combined with data supplied by a trusted algorithm) chooses five items that are most likely to meet your needs. If you don’t like them, you send them back. (Shipping is free both ways.) Bonus: In Spring 2017, Stitch Fix will also carry plus sizes bigger than 16 (XXL). TrunkClub.com If you like the idea of having someone else pick out all your outfits, but want to preview the choices before they ship, consider Trunk Club. “I love the convenience!” says Theresa DePiettoRoesler of Babylon, New York. “I have my personal shopper at Nordstrom, but I love that I don’t have to leave my house to try on the clothes. Their stylists are young and hip, so they know what I should be wearing.” Bonus: If you use your Nordstrom Card for a Trunk Club purchase, you’ll earn Nordstrom Notes. Poshmark.com & Tradesy.com Are you the type who buys an outfit, wears it a few times, and tires of it? Or does your size fluctuate faster than the stock market? If so, online consignment stores like Poshmark and Tradesy could save you thousands of dollars a year. List your new or gently worn designer fashions and accessories on the site for others to buy. When you’re looking to shop, the site connects you with sellers who share your sense of style. Bonus: You’ll find style suggestions in the listings. “Someone may list a Chanel bag, and then photograph it with three or four different outfits for ideas of how to wear it,” says Gach. Polyvore.com Think of this fun fashion find as “Pinterest or Houzz for clothing, shoes, and accessories.” And beware, the site can be just as addicting. Browse by categories, such as sandals or sunglasses. Or follow fellow fashionistas with similar taste. To attract your own followers, get creative by making collages of your favorite fashion finds. “It’s a great way to waste a lot of time,” says Gach, laughing. “But it’s also a great way to educate yourself about fashion and have a lot of fun doing it.” Bonus: When you find something you like, simply click to buy it and it’s yours!

Quick Tips for Online Shopping Success Before you try to buy online, says Gach, “you’ve got to know your body type.” Try on different styles and think about what’s in your closet: Which clothes do you keep going back to? Which items make you feel like a goddess when you wear them? Yes, size matters. Visit brick-andmortar stores to get an idea of sizes from various designers and decide which cuts flatter your shape. Ask away. When you’re ready to shop, ask the online stylist lots of questions. “Find out if the sizes run large, small, or are true to size,” advises Gach. “Ask about the materials as well as the detail work you may not be able to see, such as how the cuffs are made.” When it comes to shopping for fashion online, a little knowledge goes a long way.

RentTheRunway.com Need a dress for a special event but don’t want to spend hundreds—or thousands—of dollars on an item you’ll use only once? If you’ve been in this situation (haven’t we all?), you’ll understand why Rent the Runway is a runaway hit. The “Unlimited” subscription ($139/ month) entitles you to three items at a time; keep them as long as you like or return them right away. The other plans permit you to rent items at a flat rate and keep them for four or eight days. “It was super-easy,” says West Babylonbased shopper Jennifer Herrera, who needed a gown for a gala in Mexico. “If you’re not sure of the fit, you can order the item in two different sizes.” Bonus: With the company’s 150,000-square-foot fulfillment center based right in New Jersey, shipping is especially fast for New Yorkers. Modaoperandi.com Gach describes this curated collection of top-name fashions as “cutting edge,” and “on trend.” Best of all? Clearance clothing, shoes, accessories, jewelry, and bags may be up to 80 percent off. But if you’re willing to spend a little more, you can preorder next season’s hottest looks. Bonus: New York-based shoppers can book an in-home fashion consultation with one of the site’s stylists. Yoox.com Similar in concept to Moda Operandi with brand name fashions at substantial savings, YOOX offers a more laidback feel. They even have kids’ clothing, plus a Disney line for grown-ups. “They also have amazing sales and great designers,” says Gach. Bonus: For fashion inspiration, click the “Icon” tab, where you’ll find fabulous photoshoots and new looks from up-and-coming designers. ModCloth.com Known for fashion designer-inspired clothing and classic styles, ModCloth’s online reviews are some of the most informative, which is important to alleviate fear of buying clothing online. “Customers will show how they took a dress and styled it to make it their own,” says Gach. “And when you see someone with your body type wearing a dress you’re thinking about buying and you see how it fits them, it makes you feel much more confident about purchasing that item.” B

Summer Paradise at Four Seasons Oahu Since it’s just a five-hour flight from LAX, Hawaii is a destination favorite with many Angelenos. And now with new routes from Virgin America to Maui and Oahu, it’s easier than ever to travel to paradise. The luxurious Four Seasons Oahu at Ko Olina is the premiere place to stay on the island and the perfect five-star sanctuary to relax, rejuvenate, and enjoy Hawaiian hospitality at its finest. With more than 371 rooms and suites, many with amazing views of the

ocean, accommodations at Four Seasons Oahu include breathtaking sunsets, beautiful airy rooms and a large, modern luxury bathroom with all the amenities. The resort also offers a handful of custom Oahu experiences, including chartering a private yacht, an incredible night dreaming under the stars in a specialty Sky Terrace suite, and amazing helicopter tours. Honolulu and the famous Waikiki Beach are just short drives away, and the Lanikuhonua

nature preserve sits north of the resort. Take a visit and you’re sure to agree that its meaning— where heaven meets the earth—is rather apt. One of the highlights of Four Season Oahu is the incredible Naupaka Spa. If traveling with a partner, indulge in the couples massage, No Ka ‘Oi (The Best), which is performed in an outdoor cabana where you can hear the soothing sounds of the ocean and be kissed by the warm Hawaii breeze as you enjoy your experience. The treatment

starts with a phenomenal body scrub, which you rinse off together in the outdoor shower. Return back to the table for a relaxing massage that will lift you away from all of your woes. If you’re traveling with family, the phenomenal children’s club, called Kids For All Seasons, provides complimentary full days of activities for kids ages 5-12. There’s even a young adult center for guests 12+. These services—fun for the kids—are also perfect for adults who want some alone time or to go off on

their own adventures. Another fun experience to include in your itinerary is a luau at Paradise Cove, which is just a short walk away from Four Seasons Oahu. It’s a magical treat of entertainment, amazing food, and activities for the whole family, all set against a spectacular beach backdrop and the most beautiful sunset. Four Seasons Oahu truly has something for every traveler, combining quintessential luxury with Hawaii tradition and charm. Aloha! FourSeasons.com/Oahu

Park Hyatt Aviara Resort, Golf Club & Spa Park Hyatt Aviara is one of the best hotels in the thriving seaside town of Carlsbad and the perfect place to plan your next weekend getaway. This Forbes Five-Star resort, located on 200 acres of rolling valleys, is filled with sophisticated guest rooms, bustling restaurants, a delightful spa, and a world-class golf course, all within a Spanish colonial-style property. Perched on the shore of Batiquitos Lagoon and just a stone’s throw from the Pacific Coast, Park Hyatt Aviara is the perfect setting for a relaxing escape or business retreat. And they certainly know how to feed you well at The Argyle Steakhouse, one of

many dining options at the hotel. Close to the golf course with views of the 18th green, the restaurant shows off SoCal’s quality local and organic ingredients with an exquisite preparation of the finest cuts of meat. The effortless style and charm of the eatery, combined with first-class food and on-the-money cocktails is heaven. They are also accommodating with a healthy variety of gluten-free and vegan options. The Baja Striped Sea Bass and Japanese Wagyu are just a few of the highlights of this scrumptious menu. Aviara.Park.Hyatt.com

Ocean Pearl Spa Peltzer Farm & Winery We’re spoiled for choice with wineries in Southern California, but do not pass up the wonderful option of Temecula as a place to visit for wine tasting, a girls’ trip, or a romantic weekend away. Peltzer Family Cellars may be new to the mix of established haunts in the serene and beautiful town, but it’s doing everything right. Set on an amazing farm with gorgeous views, Peltzer boasts an interesting history. The original

Peltzer citrus grove was sold to Walt Disney in the early 1950s, and that land is now the entrance to and parking lot at Disneyland! While at Peltzer, try out The Crush House, a unique tasting room where you can sample delicious wines paired with gourmet breads. (No dry crackers here). Peltzer is also a working pumpkin farm so be sure to return in the fall too! PeltzerWinery.com

An environmentally mindful sanctuary nestled in Sheraton Carlsbad Resort & Spa. Ocean Pearl Spa draws inspiration from the healing powers of the sea using many organic and naturally sourced products. A guest favorite is the Hibiscus Scrub and Massage treatment, which exfoliates and moisturizes your skin leaving it feeling brand new. Using a mixture of ingredients pulled from the hibiscus plant, essential oils, organic raw

sugar, and dead sea salt are added to this magical blend that draws out impurities and removes dead skin cells. A hydrating massage follows, leaving you with noticeably healthier-feeling skin. Ocean Pearl Spa has a catalogue of alluring body and facial therapies, performed by knowledgeable and skillful therapists with great amenities, making for a memorable spa experience. From the colors and the shade names to the packaging, everything in the UD JeanMichel Basquiat special edition collaboration evolved from the work of this groundbreaking artist. Like Urban Decay, Basquiat was an outsider who challenged the status quo and used color in nontraditional ways. From his informal graffiti work and the way he mixed mediums and colors to the way he spoke out against social injustice, it’s hard to imagine a more perfect fit for the brand.

Plastic Surgery Procedures By Janene Mascarella

Lips

One great way to give your face an instant upgrade without going under the knife—lip injections. To get a plumper pout, facial fillers like Restylane and JUVÉDERM are often used. Filler results are soft, subtle, and natural looking, and their effects can last up to a year. Facial fillers are injected into the lips using a fine needle. Though slight swelling is normal for the first 48 hours, ice and over-the-counter pain relievers will help. Afraid of the dreaded duck lips look? Not on Dr. Romanelli’s watch, as his results are perfection. “My philosophy is to not to give too much–because you can always get more.”

We’re all into health and fitness, looking great, and taking care of ourselves—but sometimes we can use a little help to enhance the areas that diet and exercise just can’t fix. What are the hottest procedures right now? We asked top doc James N. Romanelli, MD, FACS, founder of Romanelli Cosmetic Surgery, to zero in on the specific areas of the body women are seeking for some fine-tuning–both surgical and non-surgical.

Breasts

It’s all about perky and sometimes that requires implants, says Dr. Romanelli. “The implants that people are looking for aren’t crazy big. They’re really very reasonable.” According to Dr. Romanelli, many women are now seeking breast reductions to achieve the small and perky look. It’s really all about proportion, he says. If your breasts are too big, there’s not a whole lot you can do about that on your own, so a reduction is the way to go.

Buttocks

If, no matter how many squats you do, you just can’t get the derriere of your dreams, you may want to go for a Brazilian butt lift, says Dr. Romanelli. That’s where fat from other areas of the body (such as the hips) is removed and injected into the buttocks, he explains. Anesthesia is required for this one. Dr. Romanelli recommends taking two or three days off of work and about two weeks rest before resuming exercise and normal activity.

James N. Romanelli, MD is the founder of Romanelli Cosmetic Surgery, a plastic surgery practice located in Huntington, New York. Dr. Romanelli has practiced in Long Island since 1990. He completed board certification in both surgery and plastic surgery, and is a member of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS). Less than one-half of 1 percent of doctors in the United States are qualified and accepted as members of the ASAPS, which is dedicated to the highest standards of cosmetic surgery. 631-424-3600 • JRCS.com

It’s Electric! How to Tune into the Neon Trend By Rachel Paul

Shine as bright as the sun this summer by diving in head first to the neon makeup trend. Seen on eyes and lips, this trend has lit up Instagram, and it’s hard to look away! Neon not only refers to the electric shades used, but mostly to the application technique and placement of colors. It is a true art form, designed to replicate the illuminated tubular signs popularized by Georges Claude at the Paris Motor Show in 1910. Since then, these eye-catching lights have been used in lounges and storefronts everywhere.

What you need:

Grab a mirror, two lip shades (one neon and one a bit darker), and a white pigment to give this trend a try. (It’s easier than you think!)

Use your brightest colored lip liner or matte lipstick to line and fill in the lips, creating a base shade.

Beauty Director Janene Mascarella recommends Infallible Paints Eyeliner in ‘White Party” $9.99, LorealParisUSA.com

46 THE SUMMER ISSUE

Diffuse the color outside the natural lip line with a blending eyeshadow brush. Only soften and diffuse the perimeter to keep the pigment strong on the rest of the lip.

Tap the darker shade in the center of the lip and ombre into your base shade.

With an opaque white pigment, trace your lip’s natural shape. I like to use a fine eyeliner brush to keep these lines clean and defined. Be sure not to make the line too thick. You want a significant amount of your base shade to show above and below this white line.

Many people know her as the beautiful wife of actor Matthew McConaughey, but Camila Alves is so much more. She is a mother, businesswoman, entrepreneur, and above all, a passionate woman who is dedicated to helping others experience a better quality of life. Growing up in Brazil, Alves took a gamble at the age of 15 when she left behind everything she knew to follow her dream. A trip to the United States to visit her aunt turned into a more permanent stay. “When I got on the plane with my mom, I looked at her and said, ‘I don’t think I’m coming back,’” says Alves. It is that kind of intuition that has led Alves to follow her passions. In addition to finding success as a model, she has involved herself in multiple projects that tap into her creative nature. “I watched my mother go to work and create; it’s in my blood to do the same,” she says. For over 10 years, mother and daughter collaborated on MUXO, a line of fashionable yet functional handbags. “We basically started in our apartment and grew our business to where we were selling on QVC and in various department stores,” says Alves. This was one of Alves’ first entrepreneurial endeavors in the U.S., however, after the birth of her third child, she took a step back from the business to

not only become a more present parent, but also to discover what it was that “Camila loved to do.” She did some soul-searching and realized that when it came to lifestyle—health, wellness, cooking, decorating—what she most enjoyed was sharing these ideas with other women. Her website, WomenofToday. com, was born from these ideas in 2016. In addition, she has taken her other passion—providing a healthy nutritional foundation for her children—and parlayed that into a business collaboration with “Yummy Spoonfuls,” a frozen organic baby food company providing the freshest ingredients right from the farm. Together with her husband, Alves is also dedicated to empowering high school students by providing them with the tools to lead active and successful lives through the Just Keep Livin Foundation. BELLA sat down with Alves to learn more about the mother of three, and all of the ways in which she’s working to put out a positive message through helping others have a better quality of life.

Dress: Victoria Beckham Ring: Jennifer Fisher

You came to America at a young age, not knowing the language, and leaving behind the only life you knew. Did you ever consider returning home? When I was 19, I moved to New York to pursue my modeling career. After months of going on casting calls and not getting a job, I thought, “Well, maybe I’m not supposed to do this.” I considered going back to Brazil; when you leave everything and everybody you know and things don’t work out, you wonder if it was the right move. The owner of the modeling agency [Major Models] I was signed with convinced me not to give up. I thought about returning to LA, where at least I had been working and knew a few people. She gave me a small allowance to help get me through the winter and eventually work started coming in. My first job was a billboard in Times Square, and from there things progressed. I was extremely blessed to work and live for months at a time in different places, including Greece, Paris, Milan, Africa, and Asia. Those experiences were priceless. What led you to transition from modeling to handbag design? I always wanted to start a business. Years ago, I thought about selling coconut water before it became popular. I found a way to bring it to the States and went to every single friend I knew to try and get funding, but all I kept hearing was, “Americans won’t drink coconut water.” Then it became a big hit here. I look at things and think, “How can that work from a business perspective?” My mom was here with me and I asked her what she wanted to do; she suggested handbags, so that’s how we got started. I’m no longer part of that business, but she has continued with it. Tell me about your website, WomenofToday.com. I started the site as a way to share with other women what I have learned. Whether it’s taking care of your skin, learning how to cook, decorating, or kids activities, I wanted to create a hub… a community where we could all share tips and ideas. I don’t have all the answers—together we can learn from one another.

You recently celebrated the one-year anniversary launch of “Yummy Spoonfuls.” How did the collaboration with founder Agatha Achindu come about? After having my third child, Livingston, we were on location, living in a trailer, and I would be up in the middle of the night making all of these purees and vegetables and trying to pack them so I could freeze and keep them fresh. I thought to myself, “Why is it so hard to find fresh, organic baby food in the store just like you make at home?” I started to research the idea and to my surprise there weren’t any companies making frozen, organic baby food on a mass scale. While there were some smaller ones, they weren’t very practical for a few reasons. I travel all over the world, especially within the United States, to places that are small and in the middle of nowhere, where certain things aren’t always accessible. My goal in life is to try and make things accessible to everyone. Through a mutual friend, I was introduced to Agatha who had started a similar business nine years earlier, and we clicked right away. We have similar backgrounds; we both come from a family of farmers and understand the importance of “real” food. It’s important to have the purest form of food and it shouldn’t be just certain people who have access to it. Our goal is to continue working to make it accessible to as many parents as possible. [Yummy Spoonfuls is sold in 1,500 stores, such as Whole Foods and Target, and is currently available in 31 flavors.] Your foundation, Just Keep Livin, is based on the doctrine that part of life is about giving back. How does j.k. livin accomplish this? The goal of our foundation is to help high school kids who are still in the developing stage…to help shape and impact them in a way that will change their lives. We want to build great men and women. Through afterschool programs that focus on physical fitness and wellness, we are teaching them how to take care of themselves while also providing a safe place to go. We bring in guest speakers from all walks of life to share their stories; you never know what will inspire kids. The more they are exposed to, the more possibilities they will have.

62 THE SUMMER ISSUE

Small gestures of kindness can change how people go about their lives…” Another part of the program is community service; it’s important for kids to learn how to help others. They do things like cleaning up a beach and preparing packages for the troops in Afghanistan; whatever it is, we always have 100% attendance. What we are doing is helping them to see their own potential. Our program is inspiring them to do the right thing and they realize that what they have to give back is so special. Are your children involved in the charitable work of both you and your husband? Absolutely! They see the work we do and from an early age are learning to give back. Any time we visit schools or orphanages, they’re with me. Together we go to the store, pick out what to buy, and deliver it to the various places. They also have their own version of things they try and do—they save money, and at Christmas we buy gifts to send to children in orphanages in Brazil. Small gestures of kindness can change how people go about their lives. In every location, we try to find ways to help the people of that community. I’m constantly doing these types of things; I just don’t talk much about it. It is how I go about my life—if I see someone who needs help, I try doing what I can. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given? When I was having a hard time with one of my pregnancies, a family friend said to me, “This too shall pass.” It’s such a simple line, one that’s in the Bible, but up until then I had never really thought of it. Those words helped me, and any time I am going through something, I say to myself, “This too shall pass, so Camila, how are you going to handle it?” It helps me keep a good, positive attitude toward handling problems and situations instead of letting them take over. Go Natural this Summer Seven Safe and Effective Summer Beauty Solutions Did you know you can treat your skin and hair, protecting it from the summer elements, with all-natural beauty products? Many people prefer to know exactly what they’re putting on their hair, face and body. Others appreciate the cost savings. Whatever your reason, summer is a great time to go natural! “You can use essential oils combined with everyday household ingredients to make many natural skin care and beauty products,” says Melissa Morton, a West Babylon, NYbased essential oils distributor for Young Living. “Because essential oils are highly concentrated and very powerful, a little goes a long way. People often find they save money over store-bought beauty products.” “Whenever you go to the source and don’t pollute organic products with additives, and you use them topically, the skin—our biggest organ— rewards you for it,” says Gonen Yohananof, founder and CEO of Mary Tylor Naturals, a maker of high-end beauty products. Try these do-it-yourself products to help your skin and hair stay beautiful all summer.

Shea Butter

If you want to start simple, our experts recommend turning to shea butter as a replacement for conventional lotions and moisturizers. This all-natural, multi-purpose skin care product can be used alone in a bar form or combined with other ingredients to help create smooth, soft skin all summer. “Shea butter moisturizes the skin and also creates a moisture barrier than can help treat skin irritations,” says Yohananof. “When you use pure, organic shea butter you enable your skin to work for you.” You can buy shea butter online, in natural/whole foods stores, many vitamin stores, and other mass market retailers. It comes in bars, creams, or as refined shea butter sold by the pound.

Body Butter

Shea butter happens to be a key ingredient in one of Morton’s favorite all-natural homemade beauty products. “I combine half a cup each of shea butter, food-grade coconut oil, and jojoba oil, then add about 10 drops of whatever essential oils I’m in the mood for,” she says. Morton lists Frankincense as her “go-to” oil for skin health.

Sugar Scrub

Before you pack up the kids and head to the water, Morton promises glowing, beach-worthy skin by using a homemade sugar scrub, which helps exfoliate and moisturize. She combines ¼-cup fractionated coconut oil and 1 cup sugar with eight to 10 drops each of essential oils. “I would probably use lavender and Roman chamomile if I wanted a relaxing scrub,” she says. “But for a refreshing, summery scent, I’d choose my favorite citrus oils.” Tip: Fractionated coconut oil is often used to dilute essential oils, is a liquid at room temperature, and is not safe to eat. You can buy it online, at pharmacies and vitamin shops, at health food stores, and sometimes even in craft stores if they sell soap-making supplies. It is often used in massage oils, serums, and scrubs. Food-grade coconut oil, a solid at room temperature, is also used in a variety of beauty treatments. You’ll find that in any grocery store, either in the natural foods section or the baking aisle. The sugar scrub can use either kind.

Coconut Hot Oil Hair Treatment

Mysti Linne, author of “The Pantry Cleaner: Chemical Free Cleaning” and natural living advocate, recommends foodgrade coconut oil to help strengthen and protect the hair. “It’s fantastic as a hot oil treatment!” she says. “It’s a low-heat oil, so the warmth of the shower water turns it liquid. Just make sure to shampoo it out after a few minutes.” Use a dime or quarter-sized amount, depending on the length of your hair, a few times a week for smooth, shiny tresses.

Tea Tree Oil Shampoo

For clean and healthy hair without all the additives, Long Island, NY-based office manager Maria Cavalluzzo relies on tea tree oil shampoo with peppermint and lavender. “It helps prevent dandruff and it feels good! I love how it makes my scalp tingle and I love the scent,” she says. She only washes her hair once a week to eliminate shampoo build-up and let the hair’s natural oils do their job. Make your own by combining 1/8-cup coconut milk, 2/3-cup baking soda, ½-teaspoon olive oil, ¼-cup filtered water, 20 drops of tea tree oil, plus about 10 drops each of lavender oil and peppermint oil until you’ve created a scent to your liking. Shake it all together and store in a sealed, dark container to use. (You can even reuse an old shampoo bottle.) If you don’t feel as if your hair is clean unless you see suds, substitute liquid castile soap and water for the coconut milk, baking soda, and olive oil.

If you want to start simple, our experts recommend turning to shea butter as a replacement for conventional lotions and moisturizers.” Apple Cider Vinegar Cleanser / Makeup Remover To cleanse your face, use a combination of olive oil (1/2 cup), apple cider vinegar (1/4 cup), and water (1/4 cup) on a cotton ball or sponge. “Apply a second round after your skin is clean, and leave it on overnight to lighten dark spots, eliminate bacteria, and moisturize your skin,” recommends Linne.

All-Natural Lip Balm

Summer’s heat and sun can wreak havoc on the lips, but conventional lip balms can further dry them out, requiring you to use even more of the product. “For summer, the most important challenges to tackle include dryness from the sun and exposure to the elements,” says Yohananof. Make your own hydrating lip balm using 2 tablespoons each of beeswax pellets, shea butter, and coconut oil. Melt the ingredients in a double boiler, and then remove the boiler from the stove. Keep the bowl in the hot water so ingredients don’t harden immediately, and add 10 to 20 drops of peppermint essential oil, until it has the scent you desire. Use a dropper to fill empty lip balm tubes or scoop the lip balm into small jars and apply with your finger. Beeswax pellets, you ask? They aren’t as exotic as you might think. Find them online or at nearly any craft store or big box retailer—they’re a common ingredient for candle-making.

Beautiful Means Clean and Healthy

As many of us look to lighten our beauty routine as the days get brighter, these all-natural solutions can help you look beautiful with minimal makeup. After all, what’s more beautiful than clean and healthy? B

You probably know Emilia Bechrakis Serhant from “Million Dollar Listing New York” and the spin-off show, “Million Dollar Listing New York: Ryan’s Wedding.” But did you also know she holds three law degrees and is a selfproclaimed gym rat? Serhant was born in New York, raised in Greece, then attended college in the United Kingdom. Her career goal was to become an international lawyer in the United States, United Kingdom, and Greece. With a specialty in maritime law, Serhant had a dream job waiting for her in Geneva, running North America for the largest container line in the world at their global headquarters. She stayed in New York instead, pursuing a career in Land Title Insurance after meeting her husband, Ryan Serhant, star of Bravo’s “Million Dollar Listing.”

“I Loved His Arrogance and Wit”

When Serhant first met Ryan, she was intrigued by his confidence and charisma. She found him to be one of the most striking men she had ever seen, pointing out that she also appreciated his sense of humor and confidence. She knew it was the real deal when she felt nervous around him, but then found herself letting down her guard slowly but surely. “I am a very guarded person and it takes a long time to break down my walls,” Serhant explains. “It took him a while, but he did that.” When Ryan proposed to her in Times Square in 2015, the whole experience was overwhelming, she admits—and amazing! “No one had ever gone to such lengths to make me feel special.”

Her Favorite NYC Workouts

• Serhant works out religiously with a trainer at The Dogpound, doing circuit and weight training. (Solo workouts at the gym aren’t her thing.) • She tries every class she can on the weekends. Her latest favorite: New York Pilates. • She also loves spin classes and taking really long walks.

Make Exercise a Part of Your Daily Routine

• You don’t have to be a member of a fancy gym. • Give yourself a month to form fitness as one of your habits. • Don’t just talk about working out, do it! Plan mini workouts at home or in the office, then devote three times a week doing something you love. • Take the time to figure out what you love. “There’s no reason to hate your workout!”

Serhant’s background has a profound impact on her eating habits. She only uses Greek olive oil at home, and avoids excessive sugar. “After eating fresh food in Greece, I had trouble eating meat and dairy in the United States,” she says, which is why she is slowly becoming vegan—although she still loves fish, she says. And while she rarely eats dairy, when she does, it’s—surprise, surprise— Greek yogurt. “My guilty pleasure—which is actually healthy, so it’s not even a real guilty pleasure—is Greek frozen yogurt from Mike and Dave’s.” (We are all in luck because they have shops opening up in New York City and the Hamptons soon!)

The Science to Living Forever Dr. Didier Demesmin, MD

On record, the oldest person to have ever lived was 122 years old. When she was asked about the secret to longevity, she replied, “Red wine and lots of chocolate.” She rode a bicycle until she was 100 years old. Scientists are still puzzled by why some people outlive others, but we do know the life expectancy in

74 THE SUMMER ISSUE

America is increasing overall. Our bodies are built to repair and restore themselves. There is a science to prolonging your life—doing things that are harmonious with the body’s ability to heal itself. To live a long, healthy, and vital life, it is just as important to be in good mental shape as it is in prime physical shape.

Nutrition

Nutrition plays one of the most important roles in ensuring longevity. Reducing calorie intake by about 25 percent has been shown to slow down one’s metabolism; according to experts, people with a slower metabolism live longer. When reducing caloric intake, one must remove the least nutritional items from the grocery list, and keep the ones with most nutrients. It is vital that the body is properly nourished, but not “full.” When the body is in a state of slight hunger, it becomes stronger and will resist the aging process. This also begins a process of autophagy, or regeneration, in which cells remove damaged parts and recycle materials into new parts. Healthy consumption of wine has been linked to improved cardiovascular health, protection of cells from free radical damage, and promotion of healthy blood sugar levels, all resulting from a natural ingredient found in red and white wine called resveratrol. Organic dark chocolate is a great source of flavonoids, antioxidants that reduce cell damage caused by free radicals. The consumption of dark chocolate has also been shown to slow down the aging process and helping prevent age-related disease. Of course, everything must be consumed in moderation, and a balanced nutritional diet is crucial to good health and longevity.

Mindset

A positive mindset is imperative to living a long and healthy life. The mind should always be actively working and growing. Factors negatively affecting the mind—such as stress—need to be removed. Chronic psychological stress causes damage deep within human cells by shortening telomeres (tiny pieces of DNA). Short telomeres have been linked to heart disease, diabetes, and early death. Studies show that exercise keeps stress from unraveling telomeres. Not all stress is bad, however. Findings from additional studies indicate that good stress actually prolongs longevity. Good stress can be induced by performing challenging, yet fulfilling work, and participating in competitive sports.

Exercise

You need to keep your body active to keep it working. However, you do not need to do lengthy amounts of strenuous exercise to stay healthy. Studies show that as little as 10 to 15 minutes of mildvigorous exercise a day helps prevent the shortening of telomeres, reducing the effect of aging on cells. Daily walks outside are great for both your mind and body, even if you do it for only a few minutes a day (after you get outside, you will likely want to stay out longer).

Healthy consumption of wine has been linked to improved cardiovascular health, protection of cells from free radical damage, and promotion of healthy blood sugar levels." The Science

Science is evolving quickly, and what we are now able to do with the help of medical research and technology is astounding. Regenerative medicine is a field that uses the latest technology to replace the body’s injured cells with its own healthy, regenerative cells, which then repair and restore the injury. For example, someone with a sports injury can use a therapy called Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP), in which the patient’s own blood is drawn, and then spun using a device that separates the cells. Then, the cells that heal and restore are isolated and injected into the injured area. It is safe because the patient is using his or her own blood and cells, so it is natural and there are minimal chances of rejection or infection. Regenerative medicine is also used for cosmetic purposes, and this field is growing in popularity rapidly. Many say that regenerative medicine is the “fountain of youth”—it allows the body to repair and heal itself, alleviating pain and restoring functionality. Our bodies really do have the ability to heal and restore, but we are responsible for helping them do so. By exercising regularly, getting enough sleep, staying positive, and getting proper nutrition, we help our body repair itself faster. The science behind living forever is taking care of yourself and your body every day as if you were really going to live forever.

Battle of the Workouts: LISS vs. HIIT By Luis Loya

It’s summer 2017 and you’re looking your best. Congratulations—you deserve it! Of course, staying committed to your fitness journey never ends, it only gets better. And even if you haven’t started yet, it’s never too late to get that body you’ve always dreamed of…zero excuses! The key to succeeding in health and wellness is to work out smarter, not harder. Let me show you how by sharing the stories of two of my clients…

76 THE SUMMER ISSUE

The LISS Low-Down

Client #1 Julia

Julia is a single mother of two who works full time and attends night school while also taking care of her kids. She trains with me three times a week, is a very strong woman, and loves to lift heavy. I feel like she lets a lot of aggression out by doing so. Although Julia is active and works out hard and has a great physique, she carries a few extra pounds of fat around her midsection (can you relate?). We all know those love handles are hard to say goodbye to, so I recommended she do a LISS cardio session after our weight training to help burn down that last inch of flab covering her strong abs while keeping her hard-earned muscle.

LISS stands for Low Intensity Steady State cardio, and requires you maintain the same pace for a set period of time. (This is completely the opposite of HIIT, which stands for High Intensity Interval Training.) Although the benefits may not be the same as HIIT, LISS is a worthwhile addition to your workout routine. These Low Intensity Steady State workouts are as simple as they come; you perform your workout at 60 to 70 percent of your maximum heart rate for 20 minutes or more, aiming for a heart rate of 120 to 150 beats per minute. LISS is an aerobic type of training that can target stored fat, plus it requires a lot of oxygen. Keep in mind our body will always want to use muscle for everything, which is why we need to keep that heart rate at a mid- to low steady and focused rate so you can hit the target heart rate and train your body to use stored fat for energy instead of muscle.

Client #2 Roxy

Roxy, a 22-year-old from Malibu, California, has never stepped a foot in a gym. She recently gained a few pounds and needs help working it off, but she’s not one who takes direction easily—especially at an age in which she feels she knows it all. When she reached out to me, she basically begged me to snap my fingers and magically make her bikini-ready for a few pool parties coming up this summer. After our consultation, I suggested a weightlifting regimen workout for her so she could start building solid muscle and tighten things up. One way Roxy will see fast fat-burning benefits with weights is by focusing on a HIIT workout, which requires you give all-out effort through quick, intense bursts of exercise followed by short, sometimes-active recovery periods. This type of training gets and keeps your heart rate up and burns more fat in less time.

Why and When You Should HITT It

Luis’ Advice to Ladies:

“Lifting weights will not make you look like a man. Don’t be scared to lift heavy, and remember to squat deep and low!” @HandsomeLuis

HIIT workouts are a bit more difficult because you need to perform your workout at 90 to 100 percent of your maximum heart rate for two minutes or less, and then back off for a preset rest time interval of two minutes or less. By repeating this cycle six times or more—two minutes on, two minutes off—this “anaerobic” type of training won’t rely on oxygen only because it’s fueled mainly by carbohydrates. This makes you breath harder and burns more fat than LISS training. Roxy will benefit from this type of workout more than Julia because she doesn’t have solid muscle to burn; instead, this will build her stamina, pump more oxygen in her body, and introduce her muscles to working out. If you do HITT training correctly, not only will you burn fat while in the moment, but hours later. Your heart rate will keep beating at a higher rate, which could burn a few extra calories even when you’re at rest. If you’re training hard in an attempt to gain muscle, adding HIIT workouts might not be the best idea. That’s when LISS is ideal as it’s a low-impact workout that can actually help increase blood flow to damaged muscles and reduce any post-workout stiffness you may feel from weight training or other heavy workouts. Working out is all about choice, but no matter what you choose, it will require hard work. Now, have at it!

Up Close & Personal

For fans of “The Real Housewives of Dallas,” another popular show in Bravo’s “Real Housewives” franchise, cast member Stephanie Hollman brings to the screen each week not only a bit of comic relief, but a wholesome, girlnext-door persona. A wife, mother, philanthropist, fashion blogger, and former social worker, Hollman’s keeping it real by being herself and never losing sight of who that is. “You’re always going to get that love/hate feeling from people,” she says. “You just have to be honest about your life and who you are–the audience can tell when you’re not being authentic.” Hailing from a small town in Oklahoma, Hollman’s move to Texas 10 years ago came as a big adjustment. After getting engaged to her husband Travis, she picked up roots and settled in an even larger city, admitting it wasn’t easy at first. “It was hard,” says the country girl at heart. “Dallas is a fast-paced city and everyone seemed so put together and more glamorous than what I was used to. Where I’m from is very relaxed, but I made some good friends and they helped make the transition feel a bit more like home.”

Giving Back

Fast forward a few years and Hollman is happily raising two young boys while juggling her time on the hit Bravo show. She and her husband are also deeply committed to giving back to their community. “Most of our efforts are focused on women and children,” says Hollman. “It goes back to my days as a social worker, before we were married.” BELLA NYC had the opportunity to talk with Hollman, whose girl-nextdoor charm won us over at “Hello…” What about Dallas do you love most? That fast pace that scared me at first turned out to be one of the things I love about Dallas—there are abundant options for dining out and so many things to do like the museums, parks, and aquariums. I’ve realized it’s a great place to raise a family and has become even better since having kids. I also love the southern hospitality—the people here go out of their way to help you. Plus, I’m only four hours away from my hometown; I take my children there so they get the best of both worlds.

Gown: La Petite Robe di Chiara Boni (Inset) Dress: Self Portrait

How did the whole experience with the show transpire? I’ve always been a fan of the “Housewives”

franchise, and when one of my girlfriends was asked to be a part of it, she also suggested me and Brandi (Redmond) to the casting agent. At first we thought it was a joke, that nothing would come of it, so we went into it just being goofy, and maybe a little “too much” ourselves. But ultimately I think that’s what they liked, that we weren’t trying to be something we weren’t; we were authentic. What was your husband Travis’ reaction when you told him? He was extremely supportive! He’s done some projects in the industry as well so he knows the good and the bad. His advice to me was, “If you don’t give it a shot, you’ll never know, and if you wind up not enjoying it, we can always back away.” You’ve said that this show has been one of the best things to happen to your marriage—why is that? If you do any type of show like this one, you get a glimpse into what other people are seeing–your marriage, your friendships, how you parent—and you can learn a lot. At first I was scared it would hurt our marriage, but we were in therapy the entire time we were filming, and still are. I think it’s important to work on things before they develop into something bigger, and for us, it made our marriage stronger. It can be easy to lose focus on what’s important, but in reality these shows are just a small facet of your life. How has your life changed since the show first began? The biggest adjustment for me was learning how to balance my family and social media. There was a point in the first season where I felt

This year I’m hoping to be more authentic, stand up for myself more, and have a thicker skin. I think it’s important to say how you feel.”

Before marriage and kids, you worked as a social worker. How have you parlayed that experience into the work you do today? I worked at Head Start, an organization that promotes school readiness to children under 5 years old from lowincome families. It is a wonderful organization, and I loved working with both the kids and their parents. At night I worked at Madonna House, a pregnancy shelter for unwed and homeless mothers. It was another amazing experience and I loved both places for different reasons.

like it was starting to take over my life. You have to be present on social media and it seemed like I was connecting more with my fans than my family. I felt like I had to respond to everyone who wrote me and I had to make sure not to choose that over spending time with my husband and children.

I started to miss my work after we got married, and I asked my husband if we could do something through his company, Hollman, Inc. Now I have a budget and allocate where our funds and our time will be focused. We work with organizations such as The Family Place, the largest domestic violence agency in Texas, as well as Big Brothers Big Sisters. I’ve been a Big Sister to the same little girl for almost 10 years–she was just accepted to college. These two organizations are my babies.

Before joining RHOD you’ve said you never experienced this type of drama; do you have any regrets about joining the show? I don’t have any regrets; it’s been a blessing in my life. I’ve learned about myself, and am doing something for me that is fun. In looking back at season one, I do wish I had a stronger voice–I was such a people-pleaser and I didn’t say things I needed to in fear of hurting someone else’s feelings. This year I’m hoping to be more authentic, stand up for myself more, and have a thicker skin. I think it’s important to say how you feel.

At BELLA our tagline is “Beauty Defined By You.” How do you define beauty? For me, beauty is being authentic to who you are. Seeing my children play, helping others, concentrating on my marriage, being happy with who I am, and not expecting this idea of perfection… that, to me, is beauty. In a society where we are judged by the way we look, I want my children to know that it’s alright not to be perfect, because that idea so many people have of perfection just doesn’t exist. B

The LA Life

As an entrepreneur with a variety of careers under her belt, Nikki Haskell has paved the way for many women after her. Of course, that doesn’t mean the Queen of New York nightlife has any immediate plans to slow down. Unafraid to take chances, Haskell defies the odds, does not apologize for her beliefs, and plays by her own set of rules, all while keeping her sense of humor. “I never conformed to what people thought I should do,” she explains. “There will always be someone telling you you can’t do something. For me, I just rolled up my Chanel sleeves, went to work, and did it.” Raised in Los Angeles, the woman of many talents made her way to New York City in the early 1960s with her then-husband. Although the marriage lasted only a short period of time [the couple would remarry two years later, only to divorce again in another

In fact, it shaped the direction of her future. “There’s a reason for everything; if I hadn’t married, I would have never ended up in New York.” BELLA sat down with the fascinating socialite for an indepth conversation about her life and her career, and why even now—at the age of 75—she’ll never stop dancing.

Before your life in front of the camera as a TV host you were a stockbroker on Wall Street. What was it like being one of the first female brokers? I loved it! It never entered my mind that there weren’t any women on Wall Street. My ex-husband was the one who suggested I get a job. During the two years we were divorced I had turned $18,000 into $2.5 million, so I thought, Why not do this for a living? I worked in the business for 10 years and it was an interesting time. Women were not permitted in a lot of the restaurants—they were for men only. I paid no attention though because I didn’t feel that meant me; I walked right in to all of the hot spots the guys went to for lunch. But it was also a challenging time. When I first started, everyone thought it was a cute idea, but then I created a successful business, and they started to resent me. One day I had enough and quit. Then I thought, now what am I going to do?

Luckily, you found another outlet in the entertainment business. How did “The Nikki Haskell Show” come to fruition?

A friend of mine, Prince Egon Von Furstenberg, approached me about doing a TV show. At that time there were no other entertainment talk shows around; we really paved the way for future programs like “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous” and “Entertainment Tonight.” At the time I knew absolutely nothing about what I was doing, nor did anybody else. We were on cable, which was like the new kid in town—nobody had heard of it— and the celebrities and big names didn’t want to be on it. To bring in talent, I made a deal with the clubs I attended; they paid me to throw parties on Friday nights. Whether it was for a celebrity, a movie premiere, or a record launch, there was a highpowered party every week that I’d shoot for the show.

BellaLAMag.com 87

The LA Life I am a party girl, but a party girl with a purpose. I do my best thinking on the dance floor; it’s where I’ve come up with some of my best ideas. Nikki Haskell @NikkiHaskell bignikbh

As the show gained notoriety, you interviewed some of the biggest names in the industry and traveled all over the world doing so. How would you describe that time in your life? The

show was all about fashion, fun parties, and lots of interviews—around 3,000 people! Some of the people I interviewed were Donald Trump, Joan Collins, Andy Warhol, and Tony Bennett. I traveled to the most amazing locations to cover events like the Cannes Film Festival, Carnivale in Rio de Janeiro, even the Philippines Film Festival, where I became very friendly with Ferdinand and Imelda Marcos. Essentially, the show was my view of how I lived my life, and it was great! I was also the first person to put fashion on television. In the 80s, fashion in the United States became very important; prior to that it all came from Europe. I covered fashion shows like Carolina Herrera, Bill Blass, Oscar de la Renta, Halston, and Calvin Klein, and featured them on the program. We shot about 300 shows over a period of six years.

You filmed at one of your favorite places, the legendary nightclub Studio 54. What was that like? I loved going to discotheques and was totally addicted to Studio 54. I went opening night with Donald and Ivana [Trump], who were good friends of mine. When people asked me where I lived I told them, “Studio 54, but I keep an apartment on 68th Street.” Because I went there all the time I thought, I better come up with a clever idea as to why I have to go dancing every night otherwise they’re going to start ‘Disco Anonymous’ for me.

You’ve said the club changed your life; in what way would you say that’s true? Before Studio 54 I would never go

out at night by myself; I’d go on dates, have dinner, and then go home. The men I dated were successful businessmen who didn’t want to stay out late dancing, so when they dropped me off, I’d get out of the cab, go right through the revolving door, [get] back into a cab, and head to Studio 54. There was something that came over you when you walked in; the energy from the place was miraculous. Because I was always out, people had the impression I was just a “party girl.” Well, I am a party girl, but a party girl with a purpose. I do my best thinking on the dance floor; it’s where I’ve come up with some of my best ideas.

What projects are you currently working on? I’m always doing something because you never know what’s going to work. I wrote a screenplay called,

88 THE SUMMER ISSUE

“Overdressed When Naked,” which is autobiographical. It’s a chunk of my life that runs from 1962 to 1977. I also co-wrote an urban musical comedy, “The American Dream,” and just finished a pilot for a new TV show currently titled, “Flashback to the Future,” where I re-interview the same people I interviewed 30 years ago with the original interviews incorporated into the show. This is going to be a big year for me; I have a bunch of projects that are going to come to fruition. I have a new invention coming out just in time for the holidays– the STARZ SHOOTERZ. It's a phone case that lights up, stands up, and turns into a selfie stick. I also own the rights to “The Nikki Haskell Show.” We currently have 27 episodes up on Amazon Prime and plan to add another 40; hopefully by the end of this year there will be close to 100 shows available.

Over the past year you’ve been vocal in your support of Donald Trump, who has been a friend for many years. As a result, you’ve received backlash, especially from close friends. Do you ever secondguess speaking up in support of him?

I’m never going to change the courage of my convictions. I’m an American and proud to be one, and will do everything in my power to be supportive of whomever our President is because a country divided is dangerous. I was always under the impression that win, lose, or draw—whoever wins—you go with the flow. I am still shocked that some of my friends aren’t speaking to me because of the way I voted. I live in two places (New York and Los Angeles) that are mostly all liberal, but I’m not someone who is “in your face” with my political views.

What do you love about NY and LA? NYC

is fabulous—it exudes a certain energy you don’t find elsewhere. I lived there during the most amazing time and I enjoy going to some of my old haunts like Polo Bar, Cipriani, Elio’s, and Amaranth when I’m in town. As for LA, I love Soho House, The Beverly Hills Hotel (my home away from home), and Polo Lounge, where I love to go to the pool—it’s absolutely beautiful and charming. The hot spot these days is The Tower Bar, which has an elegant charm. Then there’s Craig’s for its excellent food and great people-watching. When it comes to dancing, I enjoy going to Giorgio’s in the Standard Hotel. I love that I get to live and work in both places. You can’t hit a moving target, so if you’re in different places, people won’t know where you are. I like that! B

Giving Back, Changing Lives Every day our world becomes more tightly interconnected. And it’s true that what you put out, you get back. These inspiring women prove it is possible to connect with others and make a positive difference in their lives. By Vanessa Coppes

Michelle Longo | Autism Advocate Ever since Michelle Longo was 18 years old, her dream was to open a salon. But Longo had to leave the workforce when her son was diagnosed with Autism, and immediately became his advocate and the advocate for other families because she didn’t want them to feel lost as she once had. Through the years, Longo continued to speak at schools and City Hall steps; she’s even been to Albany to change laws affecting families like hers. “I was voted to be on the school board and have won awards for helping others,” she recalls, but through it all, Longo kept her cosmetology license up to date while using whatever “extra” money she could to make her son happy. Today, her son Frankie is 21 years old, attends college, drives, and can also balance his own checkbook. Once everyone in her family was set, Longo jumped on the opportunity to open her dream salon. She continues to advocate for autism through local fundraising events for this cause. SwankSalonNJ.com

Emma Watson | Actress, UN Women Goodwill Ambassador

Theodora Sergiou | Saint Barbara Greek Orthodox Church

On the heels of a stellar performance in Disney’s remake of the epic story “Beauty and The Beast,” is the illustrious actress Emma Watson, who we love as Hermione Granger in the globally successful “Harry Potter” films. Watson also serves as an advocate for UN Women’s HeForShe campaign, which focuses on promoting gender equality. At just 26 years of age, Watson has been involved in the promotion of girls’ education for several years and has visited Bangladesh and Zambia as part of her humanitarian efforts. Nicholas Pools is a second generation family-owned and operated company with more than 40 years of experience providing custom in-ground pools and spas. Founder Nicholas Christofi has been building pools since 1969, and transferred that knowledge to his daughter and sonin-law, Theodora and Sotiris Sergiou, who run the family business today. Fully committed to her community, faith, and church, Theodora was recognized by His Eminence Metropolitan Evangelos of New Jersey for her volunteer work and dedication to Saint Barbara Greek Orthodox Church (SBGOC) in 2013. The SBGOC’s vision is to inspire in all persons a love of Christ, a passion for righteousness, and a consciousness of their duties to God and their fellow man. This recognition prompted Theodora to launch the Sergiou Foundation, which organizes events to raise funds for various NJ non-profits. STBarbaraNJ.org

trade and organic clothing, and served as an ambassador for Camfed International, a movement to educate girls in rural Africa. Serving as UN Women’s Goodwill Ambassador has been truly humbling for Watson. She’s said that the chance to make a real difference is not an opportunity everyone is given and is one she has no intention of taking lightly. Women’s rights are something so inextricably linked with who she is–and so deeply personal and rooted in her life that she can’t imagine an endeavor more exciting. She recognizes she still has much to learn, but as she progresses, she hopes to bring more of her individual knowledge, experience, and awareness to this role. UNWomen.org

A Novel Idea

“Ten Dead Comedians” Fred Van Lente (Quirk)

What happens when show business mixes with an Agatha Christie mystery? You get Van Lente’s satirical debut. Nine comics of various levels of celebrity convene at the island retreat of Hollywood legend Dustin Walker. Upon arrival, they find that the island is abandoned—and there’s no cell phone signal. One by one, the nine unfortunate guests are killed—but who’s the murderer? This dark yet humorous version of “And Then There Were None” will have you glued to your beach chair this summer.

“The Life She Was Given”

Ellen Marie Wiseman (Kensington)

On a summer night in 1931, young Lilly Blackwood is allowed out of her attic room at Blackwood Manor by her mother for the very first time—only to be sold to the circus. She quickly goes from sideshow spectacle to star, but then tragedy strikes. Two decades later, Julia Blackwood inherits Blackwood Manor from her parents, and along with it unhappy memories of a strict childhood. Julia hopes that a return to her family’s home might give her a fresh start, but she is soon swept up into secrets involving a forbidden attic room and mysterious circus photos. The novel weaves together the stories of both women to produce a tale of family betrayal that is both hopeful as it is heartbreaking.

“Of Mess and Moxie: Wrangling Delight Out of This Wild and Glorious Life” Jen Hatmaker (Thomas Nelson)

Women are beautiful and strong. They are also confused, make mistakes, and are otherwise less than perfect. Hatmaker—aka Big Sister Emeritus and Chief BFF—is here to remind us that there is no “right” way of doing things. In fact, if it feels like whatever you’re doing is hard, it means that you’re living life. With her trademark hilarity and honesty, this book dishes up a whole lot of hope for women who need a refill on their moxie.

Lucy Ives (Penguin Press)

It’s been a heck of a week for Stella Krakus, a museum curator in Manhattan. She’s being stalked by her ex-husband, her budding workplace romance is about to fizzle out, and she is the reluctant star of a viral video. Then Paul, one of her favorite colleagues, goes missing. Could his disappearance have anything to do with the sponsor of the current museum exhibit, a Belgian multinational whose love of the arts is eclipsed only by a desire to take control of the world’s water supply? As Stella searches to uncover secrets about the missing Paul, she slowly attempts to make sense of her own crazed life.

“The Identicals”

Elin Hilderbrand (Little, Brown & Company)

Harper Frost and her twin sister Tabitha might look alike, but they are polar opposites in just about everything. On Martha’s Vineyard, Harper’s life is in shambles: She’s living in a rundown house inherited from her father, she lost yet another job, and her romantic life is fodder for gossip. On Nantucket, Tabitha isn’t having a much easier time: She’s struggling to raise a rebellious teen daughter, and her fashion boutique is about to be a bust. For one summer, the sisters decide to put aside their sibling rivalry and swap locations in an attempt to rebuild their lives. There’s only one thing for sure with their plan–it won’t be a drama-free summer.

THE INSIDE SCOOP ON “BLIND ITEM”

“Blind Item”

Kevin Dickson & Jack Ketsoyan (Imprint)

Nicola is an assistant publicist on the rise in Hollywood. But she’s broken one of her cardinal rules: Never mix work with pleasure. So when she starts dating a movie star, Nicola finds that she is about to be on the wrong side of the scoop. Her best friend Billy is looking out for her as he lurks around La La Land for the latest gossip to sell to tabloids, and her stylist roommate Kara is there to lend support, even though she has her eyes on reality TV stardom. Can Ohio native Nicola survive Hollywood, where salacious scandals are always afoot and secrets always have a price tag?

Hollywood is known for glitz, glamour, and gossip. No one knows that better than entertainment journalist Kevin Dickson and celebrity publicist Jack Ketsoyan. Their careers, which have collectively spanned decades of red carpet shenanigans, A-list scandals, and social media meltdowns, led them to write the highly anticipated novel, “Blind Item.” There was never a lack of inspiration for their work in celebrity media. According to Dickson, “We had so much stuff we were talking about that we could never print. But we wouldn’t want to print it,” he says. “Ultimately, you don’t want to just destroy someone’s life.” So the authors kicked around the idea of a novel as a way to do something with all the juicy stories they had, and “Blind Item” was born. Ketsoyan’s celebrity clients would approve. “All my clients know I wrote the book, and 90 percent of them have read it,” he says. As for the other 10 percent, “I assured them that they are not in the book,” Ketsoyan explains.

THE LAST GUNSLINGER VS. THE MAN IN BLACK At long last, the film version of Stephen King’s “The Dark Tower” is set to arrive in theaters this August. The last gunslinger Roland Deschain (Idris Elba) must outwit Walter O’Dim (Matthew McConaughey), known as the Man in Black, who is intent on destroying the Dark Tower—and the universe along with it. No one writes a better tale of good vs. evil than King, and we can’t wait to see how this one plays out on the big screen. B

Simple-YetProfound Takeaways From Tony Robbins’ “Unleash The Power Within” Seminar By Chad Schubert

There were 9,000 people from 62 countries all screaming the same thing: YES! YES! YES! Yes to pushing past the fear that holds us back. Yes to releasing the stories that keep us stuck. Yes to annihilating the limiting beliefs that prevent us from living the life of our deepest dreams. I was one of them. So were Carmen Electra, Kim Kardashian, and Kanye West.

Humans are all looking for the same thing: Liberation from suffering.

For four days, a stadium was filled with thousands of hopeful humans–strike that, determined humans–moving in perfect sync together, screaming and dancing to the beat of the super power drum that is Tony Robbins. Held at the Galen Center in Downtown LA this past March, Robbins’ Unleash The Power Within seminar was designed to help individuals unlock and unleash the forces inside that can help break through any barrier or obstacle and create the quality of life they desire. People came from all over the world with

100 THE SUMMER ISSUE

their inner baggage in tow, ready to jump into the fire and burn that crap. I mean that fire part quite literally, too–attendees walked barefoot across burning hot coal while screaming, “YES! YES! YES!” all in the name of facing any fear that threatens to keep us small, hold us back, or limit our lives. Out of 50 action-packed hours of transformational insights and epiphanies, Robbins shared five simple, yet extremely helpful lessons to remember for those moments when we’re in a funk or feeling totally stuck. Read on, and find out how to check yourself so you can re-direct yourself…

1. Whatever you focus on, you feel. At the root of all suffering and depression is a thought. At the root of all happiness and joy is a thought. Whatever you picture in your mind, you will feel. The mind is a muscle, and the more you “exercise” to redirect its focus, the stronger you get at controlling it. Change your focus, change your life.

To learn more about Tony Robbins and Unleash The Power Within, or his upcoming Date With Destiny seminars, visit TonyRobbins.com.

2. Destiny is decided decision-by-decision.

Every decision you make—or don’t make— creates your destiny. Where you end up is a result of your choices. Deciding to stay in an unhappy marriage or job will result in a destiny you settle for, not one you want. As Robbins explains, “It’s our decisions, not our conditions, that control our whole life.”

3. Distractions are the destroyer of dreams.

There will always be a hundred things around to steal your attention whenever you sit down to focus on a project–Facebook, text messages, the dusty bookshelf, you name it. If you’re not careful, distractions will consume all of your time, all of your life. Every time you allow your focus to be swayed by distractions, you pinch off the flow of productive momentum. You slow down the dream. Before you know it, time will fly by and you’ll never accomplish anything.

4. Turn “should” into “must.”

I really should get into better shape. I really should spend more time with my parents. I really should take that dream vacation. If we’re not careful, we will “should” all over ourselves and nothing we want will ever come to fruition. Filling your life with “should” will only lead to regret. If there’s something you really want or know you need to do, turn your “should” into a “must.” You never find time, you make time. Make it a must!

5. Progress equals happiness.

Any time you’re actively moving toward something you want, you feel a positive charge of euphoria. It could be getting into better shape and eating healthier, making progress on remodeling your home, or getting better at watching your temper. When you take real steps toward achieving what you want, you feel empowered. Progress fuels personal satisfaction. When you feel good about yourself, you feel good about life. There are only two options: Make progress, or make excuses. When you start to apply these basic principles–you check your focus, become conscious of your decisions, avoid distractions, make it a “must,” and feed your progress– you begin to take control of your time and your mind. You begin to unleash the power within. Can you do it? YES! YES! YES! B

Now entering her fourth season as the host of “Marriage Boot Camp: Reality Stars,” Dr. V first appeared on Bravo’s “LA Shrinks” in 2013. Since then, she’s been featured on “Real Housewives of New Jersey,” and “Millionaire Matchmaker,” and appeared as a recurring guest on “Watch What Happens Live,” “The Dr. Oz Show,” “The Real,” and “Rachael Ray Show.” Currently, Dr. V is hosting WeTV’s spinoff, “Marriage Boot Camp: Family Edition.” BELLA sat down with this super smart (and hilarious) LA native who breaks down her top picks for living the LA Life…

most about LA is the deliciousness of differences. In just about any part of town you can look around and see a sampling of people from nearly every corner of the world. It’s invigorating to live in such a diverse place. Also, everyone clears out at Christmas, so parking’s easier then.

2. Favorite LA restaurant? If I want to go

fancy and have a five-hour dinner, I’d have to say Providence. If I want to brush up on my Italian while I pee, I’d head over to Terroni in West Hollywood (they have “Learn to Speak Italian” records playing in the loo!).

3. Favorite neighborhood? I love downtown

LA. The energy there is awesome, and it seems like the rest of LA is finally realizing what a hidden gem sits nestled between the 110 and the 101.

4. The best part about my job is… Being

able to time travel—when someone talks to me in a vulnerable, authentic way about his or her past, present, and future self, I feel transported. And in what other city could I wear this many professional hats: Relationship Expert, Reality Show Host, YouTube Philosopher, etc. and still be perceived as legitimate? Only in LA!

5. A visit to LA isn’t complete until you… Have an uncomfortable encounter with a costumed weirdo in front of the Chinese Theater, get yelled at for bringing a peanut butter sandwich too close to a playground, or attend a dog’s birthday party.

6. Favorite beach? El Matador State

Beach in Malibu is my absolute favorite. And yes, I’m sacrificing the secret of my favorite beach so your readers might enjoy it, too.

7. Best advice you’ve ever received?

Wisdom has a habit of arriving with unexpected messengers. Everyone expects an instant response to everything. But remember, you are living your lifetime. Your time belongs to you, you’re allowed to slow things down. You can decide the tempo of conversations, the making of decisions, the pace that you respond to things—all of it.

8. Your one “must-have” beauty or fashion item? I’m a lip person. My Chanel

Rouge Coco Shine No. 54 Boy lipstick is heavenly. I wish I could say it’s like sex on your lips without it sounding weird. I slather it on even though I know I should try to make it last. I go through them like candy. Help!

9. Definition of beauty? Everyone’s greatest

ally and worst potential foe can be found in the same place: the mirror. Physical beauty is an always-changing cultural construct, but internal beauty is eternal. What is truly beautiful always surpasses the physical. Imperfection is a vital component of beauty. Reflecting the best in others can highlight what is beautiful in you. Reflecting the best around you reveals the best within you.

10. Favorite hiking spot? The escalator at the Grove when it’s broken.

11. Favorite weekend getaway? If my

passport isn’t expired, we head down to Las Ventanas in Cabo. If I’m feeling more casual, we’ll head out to Ojai Valley Spa & Inn. I’m also a big fan of doing nothing in my own backyard with the fam’, which seems harder to get to than Cabo at times. B Photo: Sophie Jacobson
