1. Panda Exhibit OVERVIEW: The National Zoo, in its affiliation with the Smithsonian Institution, is renowned for its research on animals, their habitats, and how well they respond to environmental stresses. In addition to housing a great variety of animals, the zoo strives to educate visitors about the need to preserve habitat that is crucial to sustaining populations in the wild. Recently the zoo embarked on a project to spotlight a different endangered species each summer for the next five years. The first animal to be highlighted is the giant panda, which is native to a small area in the mountains of west-central China. The zoo believes increased public understanding will lead to greater influence and funding being applied to secure solutions.
CHALLENGE: To make the public aware of the zoo’s upcoming panda exhibit and just curious enough to pay a visit. Pandas have such universal appeal and recognition that they really advertise themselves.
SOLUTION: Design a simple poster that conveys the personality of this shy animal and thus entices the readers to come to the zoo. Placement could be in the subway trains and stations, and on buses. Also it could be a full page ad in regional editions of magazines like National Geographic.

2. Martin Luther King OVERVIEW: The defining event in Dr. Martin Luther King’s life was his “I Have a Dream” speech delivered in Washington, D.C., in August 1963. This speech summarized every idea that Dr. King labored for. It challenged the nation to assess its conscience, to take the higher path of striving to end racism. The speech was the precursor to the passage of numerous pieces of legislation designed to stop racist practices. In celebration of Black History Month, the National History Museum hosted an exhibit celebrating Dr. King and his famous speech.

CHALLENGE: To design a poster and an exhibit leaflet that convey Dr. King’s enduring legacy as reflected by the continuing relevance of the principles and goals set forth in this speech.
SOLUTION: To convey the man and the speech as a unified image, in which the text of the speech is overprinted on the profile of Dr. King.

Five Score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand today, signed the Emancipation Proclamation. This momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of Negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice. It came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of their captivity. But one hundred years later, the Negro still is not free. One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination. One hundred years later, the Negro lives a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity. One hundred years later, the Negro is still languished in the corners of American society and finds himself an exile in his own land. And so we’ve come here today to dramatize a shameful condition. In a sense we’ve come to our nation’s capital to cash a check. When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir. This note was a promise that all men, yes, black men as well as white men, would be guaranteed the “unalienable Rights” of “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” It is obvious today that America has defaulted on this promissory note insofar as her citizens of color are concerned. Instead of honoring this sacred obligation, America has given the Negro people a bad check, a check which has come back marked “insufficient funds.” But we refuse to believe that the bank of justice is bankrupt. We refuse to believe that there are insufficient funds in the great vaults of opportunity of this nation. And so, we’ve come to cash this check, a check that will give us upon demand the riches of freedom and the security of justice. We have also come to this hallowed spot to remind America of the fierce urgency of Now. This

3. Edibles Incredible OVERVIEW: Edibles Incredible, a small, family-run business in Virginia, sells homemade gourmet desserts. Its stores are located in affluent, densely populate, planned suburban “town centers” that feature office buildings, hotels, restaurants, shops and movie theaters. Business traffic is generally steady throughout the day but peaks with lunchtime office workers and evening theatergoers.

CHALLENGE: A twofold challenge: first, to expand sales by creating advertisements that appeal to an upscale clientele; second, to win customer loyalty.
SOLUTION: Use of understatement and refined, elegant graphics in the advertising is designed to appeal to the affluent, thoughtful, deliberate person who considers his dessert purchase an “event” to be savored. The variety of products featured on the three advertisements sends a message that says this company has expertise in a wide range of desserts, is established, and is trustworthy.

4. Lush OVERVIEW: Lush is an organic soap company based in the United Kingdom. Many of its products are geared toward both genders from early teens to mid-thirties. Each product has a delightful and unique name to describe it. The company’s newest fragrance is Pumpkin Delight, set for introduction in the fall 2012.

CHALLENGE: To design the packaging and package graphics for Lush’s new fragrance, Pumpkin Delight. These design elements need to win the customer.
SOLUTION: Use of greens and oranges to capture the feel of fall. The gift set is packaged in a lunch box to complete the overall feel of Pumpkin Delight’s retro ambience.

5. Safari Station OVERVIEW: Safari Station is an educational website for children designed to take them on an “eco-tour� safari through Africa and teach them all about the animals living there. Parents are encouraged to sit with their children, and to join in on games and making crafts as directed by the website.

CHALLENGE: To create a promotional mailer and company stationery that people will take note of and remember, which will not be discarded at first glance as another piece of junk mail.
SOLUTION: To design stationery and promotional mailer so that the brown roof and yellow Safari Station sign are a uniform theme. It is calculated that the additional up-front cost of specially cut paper and envelopes will be offset by the benefits of greater response and enhanced name recognition.

6. The Inn At Biltmore Estate OVERVIEW: Biltmore House and Gardens are the centerpiece of a magnificent 8,000-acre estate in Asheville, North Carolina. Biltmore was conceived in the early 1890’s by George W. Vanderbilt, grandson of the famous industrial tycoon Cornelius “Commodore” Vanderbilt. In keeping with his vast fortune and according to the custom of the wealthy of his day, the younger Vanderbilt wanted a family home that also could be used for lavish entertaining and hosting of guests from his many business and social connections. Vanderbilt intended for the property to be a working estate, with dairy, farming and hunting operations on the ground providing much of the food consumed at the house. Today the House and Gardens are open to the public. The Inn at Biltmore Estate, situated four miles by road from Biltmore House, offers luxury accommodations on the property of the Biltmore Estate. Visitors can take in the beauty that surrounds them when they wake up. The Blue Ridge Mountains frame the estate as a majestic backdrop.

CHALLENGE: To create a memorable leaflet that describes the amenities of the Inn at Biltmore Estate, all in the context of its unique proximity to the House and Gardens, Antler Hill Village and Winery, and River Bend Farm.
SOLUTION: To design the leaflet so that the Inn is clearly identified with the Biltmore Estate by elegantly introducing the reader to the Inn through “opening” the wrought iron gate to the Biltmore House grounds. Inside pages of the leaflet describe the Inn, the House and Gardens, other amenities on the Estate, and highlights of Asheville.

7. Judy Garland Greatest Hits OVERVIEW: As a movie actress and singer, Judy Garland enjoyed enormous acclaim and popularity during her career. She was a prolific performer. Her life remains a subject of fascination today, in part because many of her films and songs have become classics, and in part because under the glamorous exterior she struggled with gnawing insecurity and relentless personal problems.

To design a CD cover that stands apart from the rest, that portrays its subject to be powerfully recognizable, and that conveys some characteristic feature of the subject.
Having a velvety black background keeps all attention fixed on the large red letters with embedded images. Judy Garland’s love of red characterized her personality. Only her first name is used, to allow the letters to be shown large enough to contain the toned images of Judy’s face that enhance recognition.

8. Mary Poppins OVERVIEW: “Mary Poppins” by P. L. Travers is a story that continues to draw readers of all ages because of its wonderful appeal to the imagination and its gentle lessons about giving, love, and everyone’s need for security and acceptance.

CHALLENGE: To design a book cover and spine that is both eye-catching and appealing in its simplicity, yet economical in the use of printing inks.
SOLUTION: The art on the cover and spine consist of images all made from pieces of text taken from the bird woman chapter. The avid reader will be drawn to this right away and even the casual reader will be made curious. Mary Poppins’ trademark umbrella and the fluttering birds both are readily recognizable themes made popular by the 1964 movie.

9. Humane Society OVERVIEW: Pet overpopulation in the United States is a major problem. Every year hundreds of thousands of unwanted cats and dogs are brought to animal shelters or rescue leagues, and the large majority that is not adopted must be euthanized. Unwanted cats and dogs invariably are hungry and in poor health, and often carriers of disease. They suffer miserable lives of fear and want. Spaying and neutering, if widely pursued by animal owners, would greatly reduce this problem.

CHALLENGE: To encourage people to understand that they can personally contribute to reducing the number of unwanted cats and dogs by having their own pets spayed and neutered.
SOLUTION: To capture the reader’s attention by illustrating a world overrun with cats and dogs. Using simple imagery and themes that are humorous, nostalgic and highly relatable, the message could be spread by means of billboards or posters in public places.

The Summer 2012 edition is on the shelf now and features articles on Romantic Gardens, A Victorian Wedding as well as an inside look at George W. Vanderbilt’s library at the Biltmore Estate.
